Ladies, I just wanna say something as a paralyzed person. You are more than your beauty! if you are healthy don't torture yourself on whether or not you fit into beauty standards because at the end of the day no matter what country you will probably not fit in. Life is too short to worry about such shallow things. When you are on your deathbed you won't be crying because you didn't slay every day but because you weren't grateful for every day. Give yourselves grace and the love you deserve for yourself and others.
Korean here, I've always found it absolutely bonkers how much emphasis the Korean culture puts on appearance. Not just physical appearance but one's image and reputation. Some go through great lengths to maintain and even exaggerate their public image that they end up drowning in it. Happened to a lot of my father's generation. You're right it will change, but it's gonna take a long time. The hive mentality in Korea is strong lol
I am totally honest: i am glad i am born with a different nationality. The pressure from young age to conform to societal norms must be incredible. No wonder mental health is such a touchy subject in SK. And I think it also depends a lot on how your own parents bring up their children. Are they conservative and stick to the "standards" or are they "up to date". 🤔🧐

FYI, fast developing cultures have to reinforce some qualities in human life that in the overall picture may not be the ideal. But when they do reach parity and maturation, then they can let off the gas and contemplate what it means to live the "good life." Comparing Korea to long developed countries like a France or Germany is not fair. Korea does not have the luxury of basking in generations of inherited wealth and high status. If Korea were low-key like many Latin American or African countries, could they have made the progress they have? No. They'd still be chilling in the sun in their dirty underwear. I wouldn’t care about fitting into Korean beauty standards because maybe only in East Asia or South East Asia those standards are a thing. The rest of the world doesn’t find people who fit these beauty standards attractive. I remember I watched a video of a Korean guy showing pics of Korean celebrities to my fellow people and asked them to say who they found attractive. The results were that they didn’t find any of them attractive but they expressed their opinion in a very polite way without offending anyone. The comment under the video irritated me the most. There were certain comments in Korean being rude to the people interviewed, they were judging their appearance and some of them said that they were racist because they assumed somehow that they don’t like Asian people and that’s why they didn’t find them attractive. 12:15 so true! In my country many people have curly hair and my Korean friend, when she visited me, she kept asking if people with curly hair got a perm. I was explaining her that curly hair are just natural. Btw, you are both gorgeous!

Nahhh as someone from southeast asia, it's nothing like the one in south korea or east asia, we are not that obsessed with beauty standards,of course the standard is still fair skin, but other than that peoole wouldn't really care about the way you look
Before I went to Korea, I heard, like what you said, that you had to be “pale” to be considered “beautiful” in Korea. However, in my own experience after I went to Korea I noticed that you don’t have to be pale. But the more important features for being considered beautiful in Korean people’s eyes are: Small face, big eyes, straight nose, small lips, and of course, slim body. I was super surprised as well that pale skin seems not to be an important component for Korean beauty standards (at least in my own experience). I said that as I’m not, by no means, a pale person. I’m an ordinary South East Asian woman. I’m sad that people are superficial, but that’s life. It’s said that “God looks on the inside, people look on the outside. So, lets make sure the outside is a major reflection of what’s going on inside.”
I have Korean friends and they tell me it’s ok if they tan abroad but need to get white before they go home to Korea. Being white is definitely important to koreans. Also the big eye thing, they all want surgery to be the same and don’t value natural features such as single eyelids that many Koreans naturally have.
Most of the people who talk online about Korean beauty standards are not Korean. it's just a foreigner's perception based on limited experience or formed by misinformation, so misunderstandings are inevitable. the biggest misconception is 'pale skin'. what Koreans actually prefer is 'fairer skin tone' regardless of race. not something that resembles to a caucasian's skin color.

I don't really fit the Korean beauty standards but I don't really care. I'm not going to die trying to impress irrelevant people who will judge me no matter what I say or do. Koreans don't like me for being this way but please many of them don't even bother to respect cultural differences so why should I care about their narrow-minded opinions. If I'm going to be ugly to them then so be it I'm not ugly to me not being "beautiful" is not the end of the world. Not to mention some of these Korean beauty standards are overly toxic. It's hard enough being a foreign woman surviving in Korea we don't need people's two cents on how we should look and act so that it would be more favorable or comfortable for them.
I wouldn't care what the "Korean beauty standard" is either. I don't understand how some foreigners go to Korea and feel "ugly" based on standards that the Koreans don't NATURALLY measure up to. If you have to nip, tuck, stitch and shave down your face to be considered beautiful, is it really worth it?

What I find extremely puzzling is how standards are set that are unattainable without some sort of drastic outside interference such as surgery, aggressive dieting, extreme beauty regimens and the like. If it takes you contorting your body to fit in this standard then what happens when your body cannot take any more of it? How many surgeries, masks, tonics, potions can you take over decades before your body collapses on itself? And the irony is that once you start to look 'ugly' from the very procedures you did to fit this so-called beauty standard...the very same people who called you pretty will turn against you and call you an ugly monster! How can you set a standard that negates features that are natural to your race and people like your eyelids, lips, nose etc? No way. I cannot. Even if you say I am ugly....as we say in Nigeria 'Na ugly, I ugly....I no kill person!' ie...I'm just ugly, I didn't kill anyone.🤷

WOW over 50kg is considered fat? I'm a 5'5" American woman (average height here), and the last time I went to the doctor he told me that anything under 113lbs was medically underweight for my height, and 50kg is only about 110lbs. Imagine being considered "big" or "fat" while being medically underweight! Of course, I think they are shorter than Americans on average, but that obviously doesn't make up for thinking every woman over 110lbs is too big!

Wow I don’t know anything about you, just stumbled upon this video but you guys seem so genuine and honest and like really nice people to hang out and talk with. I loved hearing you talk and I can actually really understand how living in that environment can kinda push you into thinking and acting a certain way.
Korean beauty standards start there and will remain there. Because when they come out of their comfort zone to other countries, they'll realize that there beauty standard is a no no in 90% of the countries in the world. You can't be too skinny,pale skin and call that beauty standard. Go to other countries and you'll realize that a lot of men don't do beauty standard cos they go for what they love and not the necessary skinny and pale skin tone that most Korean people think that it's beauty. To me, Korean standard beauty stuff will forever remain in their Asia countries not other places.
Even a lot of Asians find it suffocating and hard adjusting to K-beauty standards. It is monotonous. There is no diversity. The natural variation is what makes people unique and beautiful.
I would agree with this. Thank goodness their standards will mostly stay over in East Asia. Despite many criticisms of the US there is way more diversity of looks that makes it much more interesting . Korean standards are very boring.
@@Dmoon1234 Korean beauty standards may be similar to other East Asian cultures, but it’s not exactly the same in Japan and China, for example. It seems extreme from what we’ve heard about all three nations.
You girls are gorgeous and this topic was well covered!!!!🤩🤩🤩😍😍😍 As a foreigner that lived in Korea, I have to be honest, you do have to be confident with your looks there because they do have a very distinct beauty standard that can mess up with your self steem. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that they are still pretty much a homogeneous society, although you do see more foreigners now compared to like 10years ago. The standards dont apply to us foreigners thou. I do feel bad for those girls in korea who dont fit and make all these enhancements to fit what people consider "beautiful". Also, we need to keep in mind, in Korea appearance is everything. Like how you look and what you have (achievements, luxury, etc) matters more than your competency and values. This was told to me by 3 korean friends. They themselves say they feel is a curse because you lose job opportunities and you cant join some groups within society if you dont meet these "standards". Its really sad. One mentioned that people start feeling insecure since their birth because even parents say things like "you should lose some weight" , "your cheeks are so fat"...☹️ even its very normal there to give comment to people on their looks needing enhancement. One friend worked at a cafe and a lady came in ordered, started chatting while she was making her coffee and then she told her "if you lose more weight, you will be so pretty" 💀 like I was shocked when she told me that. She says is very common to have random people say stuff like this. The comment bothered her but she kept it to herself. She says that is what most people do here. I do have to say thou I met Koreans who just dont care about none of this beauty nonesense and they do want their country to change specially for younger generations. Stay this awesome and beautiful, aint no beauty standard can top your natural beauty🙌
If I was in Korea I wouldn’t care about what they think of me because people are gonna talk regardless and not just in Korea it happens in other countries too so that’s why I choose not to care about what others say about me because at the end of the day they don’t pay my bills.
problem is when you getting a job is dependant on your looks , this is the case in korea. You could be qualified and polite but if someone else is qualified , polite and also pretty to their standard , that person gets the job , maybe even if they are a little less qualified than you. Photographs are a recquirement on CV/resume in Korea qnq

You guys are so frank and funny! I enjoyed the video. For me, sometime it’s hard to distinguish Korean idols and actresses who had plastic surgeries because they look so much alike. I guess they have certain kind of looks they want and that’s what they request to their doctors. One of my daughter’s Korean friends from high school had a plastic surgery. We visited her before my daughter moved to Tokyo. Her friend’s face was totally different. My daughter was so shocked and cried in the car on way back home. Anyways it was an interesting topic, and thank you.
I currently live in South Korea I feel like the standards definitely do not affect me because I am African and dark skinned so 😂😂 there's no standard for me I do not put any effort into looks

I watch a lot of K-dramas and it's damn distracting when these actors have so much work done that they can't do nuanced, micro-expressions. And yeah in Asia, there is sometimes very little filter. So my son is half Caucasian and I was in a Chinese restaurant where one of the waitresses tells me how good looking he is - and in the same sentence, asked if he took after his father. I did not know how to respond to that LOL (he actually takes after me because he is more Asian than Caucasian looking). Imagine body dysmorphia is epidemic in S Korea.

Its so sad really,im someone who is extremely insecure,i went there once and feld overwhelmed yet somehow comforted,as from where i am from,people think im way to much busy with my looks,always adjusting my hair,my makeup,eating way to light,while there,almost everyone did this. I saw how my friends saw me and it made me more self aware as to how depressing it looks. Im not ugly,but at what cost? I'm Moroccan (north african) and I studied with girls from Subsaharan Africa (Mali, Ivory Coast, Cameroun) and guess what, they used to touch my hair out of curiosity. It was never an issue for me, I know that my natural wavy hair isn't common among their nationals (at least not as natural hair), so it's just a matter of perspective, no need to be upset about it

Why are a lot of brown + black women still going 2 korea when they're known 2 be openly racist? I don't mean 2 offend anyone but I don't understand why anyone non-white would want 2 stay in that country long-term. I used 2 watch black TH-camrs/Vloggers in Korea around 6 or 4 years ago when Whitney Bae + Megan Bowen Megan Moon they were saying the same thing about how they never fit the beauty standard. I'm happy that it's worked out for Megan tho as she's truly settled into Korea + has a wonderful family, I think seeing stuff like that gives others hope. I've visited Japan as a brown woman just for a vacation + definitely encountered the "no foreigners gaijin unwelcoming vibes" and while I enjoyed the country I knew I would never plan a return trip bcuz of the xenophobia certain businesses + japanese ppl have there. As a brown person who has lived in Europe, Latin America, Canada, The US and The Caribbean, Korea, Japan + China def wouldn't ever be on my list in terms of Asia for relocation. Maybe Indonesia, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines. Please for my black ladies watch Stephanie Perry who shares the best countries for black sistas 2 relocate + move too.
I agree with you. Korea and China have never been and never be on my bucket list. Japan is maybe but I really have no desire to waste my hard earned money to experience their stultifying culture that hates Black people yet treat white people, no matter how ugly they are like gods. Everytime I watch a video about Korean beauty standards, one person says it’s worse then in the west, and one will say it’s the same. As an older woman from the US (which means I’ve lived through several reversals and trends of western beauty standards) I can safely say there is one very unique (and crazy) thing about Korean beauty standards. For sure. Math Never have I seen so many specific numbers given about female looks in my life. In the west we say “thin” (most women don’t use BMI. They never have it measured outside a doctor’s office) But Korea will say “this exact amount of KL” or “height divided by this number to get a specific amount of KL” They have numbers for the angles of your shoulders They have numbers for body proportion. For angle of cheekbones. For cm of forehead. It’s the insane exactness and details, the numbers that kill me 😂 In American we are way more general and way too lazy for that.
Totally with you 😂 same here in Germany. I've only had a scale in the house since I was a mom. Especially as a woman, the body changes over the whole month, which does not necessarily always have to do with weight. As long as my dress size fits I have absolutely no reason to weigh or measure myself. I am active in sports and eat a balanced diet, the rest lies in nature and in aging. For me beauty comes from within. ❤

I felt more called out in this one than anything other video 😅 first off, you BOTH are fudging gorgeous (yes Bibi with that real confidence my ROLE MODEL 😂) and when Leslie talked down on herself I almost reached through my device to respectfully beat her up or respectfully bop the forehead 😂😂😂 But as for me, I actually 10,000% relate. I have scars *all* over my body, I look like a teletubby, and when I look in the mirror I usually feel disgusted. I eventually just gave up on myself because I found no point. Barely anything worked. Self care and such felt more like for a special occasion rather than a normal or just-because thing. Even now. Here in America it's really like that too. Snatched waist, big butt, big boobs, thick thighs, good skin, white straight teeth, etc. ESPECIALLY for Black women. If you didn't fit at least a couple then you might feel a bit undesireable. That's when you know you have to REALLY depend on your personality to be accepted, if you're lucky. I never understood why people who looked amazing would say "my skin is horrible" or "ugh I'm so fat I look like a pig" sucker have you SEEN me??? Shut UP 😭 I don't understand at all. Jumping to the Korean standard, I remember asking about this as well, especially for the hair. There were times when I was growing up where I wished I was white, or at least had a perm, because barely anybody could manage my hair, and it was such a pain to do so. I wanted to have it straight, long, able to be curled, etc. It took me so long to just accept that there are some things I just could not do. So to hear about how it is there in a more in-depth discussion, it honestly still scares me, even though I know you both were affected by it (even though it kinda sounds twisted to find comfort in shared pain 😭). Getting kicked out because you are "too big"??? Pressured to change so many things about yourself??? People randomly touching your heair even if their intentions seemed innocuous (racism and CA are an entirely different convo)??? Good lord that country sounds like it's not for the faint of heart. The struggle is real, but I feel you. The nitpicking and obsession over being one type, let alone accepted as beautiful in general, I honestly have to applaud you both for not succumbing to all of it. 개인적으로 요즘 흑인의 스타일과 아름다움에 빠져 있어요. 한국인 흑인 국제커플 채널도 많이 보고 혼혈들도 많이 보는데 흑인 특유의 멋스러움과 아름다움이 있음. 특히 혼혈모델 제니를 좋아해요. 디즈니 캐릭터처럼 이쁘고 사랑스러움 한국인들 옷을 잘입는다지만 스타일은 천편일률적인 편이죠. 헤어스타일도 남자는 답답하게 앞이마 가린 레고 헬멧 머리에 여자는 그냥 앞이마 가리거나 안가린 생머리, 묶은머리 흑인들은 헤어스타일도 다양하고 두건 같은걸로 스타일연출하고... 선명한 원색의 옷을 입으면 특이하게 이쁨 그리고 전세계 kpop random dance도 보는데 흑인들이 춤출때 움직임이 남다름. 정말 리듬을 잘타고 춤을 잘춤. 리듬감이 한국인이랑 잘맞음 ❤
I’m just grateful that their standard will never ever become a global staple, despite their soft power popularity with K dramas and K-pop. And Iam so grateful I look unique and would never fit into such a boring, repetitive standard.

Lilies love lilies and roses love roses. Culture and beauty standards and taste are not wrong, they are just different. They don't need to be criticized for liking the ideal type in their appearance. The opposite is also true. There is no need to criticize people who prefer tan skin, blonde hair, and blue eyes.

I have been as a tourist and felt insecure and unpretty at first as a plus size woman. After a little while, I understood that these standards do not apply on me anyway. In my country I am considered pretty but in Korea I am not.

Im afraid of saying this but in my own two eyes, Blackpink Jennie and the korean beauty standard are not that great. I live in a part of Southern California where there has always been a large Southeast Asian and Latino community. Girls that look a lot like Jennie have always surounded me. I dont find her beauty special. Where I live there is no side eyeing you if you dont fit a mold, but everyone would agree the archetype barbie doll is the most fascinating of beauty molds because it must be crazy to have that kind of male gaze and pretty previlge. However, we let the white girls alone, we dont try to be them. I cannot imagine living in a place where I am an oddity or outcasted because I could never ever fit in. Girls, get out of there. You would rock it in a million other places. You dont owe Koreans anything. You dont have to be in their good grace. Leave them with their Jennie obsession and ps / toxic spiral. The KBS culture cannot survive, it will implode, it is not conducive to the survival of their ethnicity. Sooner or later, they'll figure it out. But in the meantime, get out while you are young.

As a foreigner why should you care about their beauty standards? Understand their standard does not translate to being the best. Be yourselves Ladies and OWN it. Also , remember they can never achieve anything else but their own: A simple example, beautiful curves, totally foreign to that population.

I find it a bit intrusive when non-Koreans feel it’s their duty to promote diversity and change in Korea. Korea doesn’t have to be the US or any major city in Western Europe. Now you live in a South Korea and pay taxes, then that’s a separate conversation. FYI - I’m not Korean but have visited several time and lived in Japan. I just believe true change only comes when the masses of said want it. If not that, indigenous populace movements tend to be the most affect. See the Korean feminist movement for example - these are South Korean women pushing to achieve bette outcomes and experiences for other South Korean women.

Have you seen the Gangnam Style video by Psy? Everything looks so perfect in that video which is so scary. Also are you allowed to comment about the big fuss why the new Disney movie, The Little Mermaid, has tanked in Korea (and China).Maybe the girl who plays the mermaid doesn't fit the beauty standards of Koreans? The Little Mermaid has been ruined not only in Korea and China, but all over the world except the United States. I like Storm the most in X-Men. I don't understand why Disney didn't cast so many attractive black actors. Some service industries are judged by appearance, but most jobs have nothing to do with appearance. The high suicide rate is not because of appearance, but because of fierce competition in studies.

I would like you to back up that comment with some research that you can cite. As for suicide the causes are much more deeper than being subjected to competition. We have some very highly competitive schools here in the US. In New York City at the high school level many of the city's special high school are mostly made up of Asian students (mostly Chinese). We don't see news stories of them committing suicide due to the stress in performing in the schools to maintain a high academic standard.

Do NOT big chop. It took going all natural and just doing it in twist-outs for 2 years, but now my hair is healthy & long. The color also changed from a greyish brown to black. Have hope & keep loving your hair back to health 💛

You are more than your beauty! if you are healthy don't torture yourself on whether or not you fit into beauty standards because at the end of the day no matter what country you will probably not fit in. Life is too short to worry about such shallow things. When you are on your deathbed you won't be crying because you didn't slay every day but because you weren't grateful for every day. Korean here, I've always found it absolutely bonkers how much emphasis the Korean culture puts on appearance. Not just physical appearance but one's image and reputation. Some go through great lengths to maintain and even exaggerate their public image that they end up drowning in it. Happened to a lot of my father's generation. You're right it will change, but it's gonna take a long time. The hive mentality in Korea is strong lol
I am totally honest: i am glad i am born with a different nationality. The pressure from young age to conform to societal norms must be incredible. No wonder mental health is such a touchy subject in SK. And I think it also depends a lot on how your own parents bring up their children. Are they conservative and stick to the "standards" or are they "up to date". 🤔🧐

FYI, fast developing cultures have to reinforce some qualities in human life that in the overall picture may not be the ideal. But without those imbalanced and disproportionate flaws, it's not likely they could have developed and progressed. But when they do reach parity and maturation, then they can let off the gas and contemplate what it means to live the "good life."
Comparing Korea to long developed countries like a France or Germany is not fair. Korea does not have the luxury of basking in generations of inherited wealth and high status.
If Korea were low-key like many Latin American or African countries, could they have made the progress they have? No. They'd still be chilling in the sun in their dirty underwear.
Vanity is not the prettiest thing, but it can often move the needle. It can stoke hard work and ambition.
And by the way, these 2 girls are working as models because they are perceived as above average. So don't believe the hype that they suffer in aesthetic agony.

I wouldn’t care about fitting into Korean beauty standards because maybe only in East Asia or South East Asia those standards are a thing. The rest of the world doesn’t find people who fit these beauty standards attractive. I remember I watched a video of a Korean guy showing pics of Korean celebrities to my fellow people and asked them to say who they found attractive. The results were that they didn’t find any of them attractive but they expressed their opinion in a very polite way without offending anyone. The comment under the video irritated me the most. There were certain comments in Korean being rude to the people interviewed, they were judging their appearance and some of them said that they were racist because they assumed somehow that they don’t like Asian people and that’s why they didn’t find them attractive.
12:15 so true! In my country many people have curly hair and my Korean friend, when she visited me, she kept asking if people with curly hair got a perm. I was explaining her that curly hair are just natural.

Before I went to Korea, I heard, like what you said, that you had to be “pale” to be considered “beautiful” in Korea. However, in my own experience after I went to Korea I noticed that you don’t have to be pale. But the more important features for being considered beautiful in Korean people’s eyes are: Small face, big eyes, straight nose, small lips, and of course, slim body. I was super surprised as well that pale skin seems not to be an important component for Korean beauty standards (at least in my own experience). I said that as I’m not, by no means, a pale person. I’m an ordinary South East Asian woman. I’m sad that people are superficial, but that’s life. It’s said that “God looks on the inside, people look on the outside. So, lets make sure the outside is a major reflection of what’s going on inside.”
I have Korean friends and they tell me it’s ok if they tan abroad but need to get white before they go home to Korea. Being white is definitely important to koreans. Also the big eye thing, they all want surgery to be the same and don’t value natural features such as single eyelids that many Koreans naturally have.
Most of the people who talk online about Korean beauty standards are not Korean. it's just a foreigner's perception based on limited experience or formed by misinformation, so misunderstandings are inevitable. the biggest misconception is 'pale skin'. what Koreans actually prefer is 'fairer skin tone' regardless of race. not something that resembles to a caucasian's skin color.

I don't really fit the Korean beauty standards but I don't really care. I'm not going to die trying to impress irrelevant people who will judge me no matter what I say or do. Koreans don't like me for being this way but please many of them don't even bother to respect cultural differences so why should I care about their narrow-minded opinions. If I'm going to be ugly to them then so be it I'm not ugly to me not being "beautiful" is not the end of the world. Not to mention some of these Korean beauty standards are overly toxic. It's hard enough being a foreign woman surviving in Korea we don't need people's two cents on how we should look and act so that it would be more favorable or comfortable for them.

What I find extremely puzzling is how standards are set that are unattainable without some sort of drastic outside interference such as surgery, aggressive dieting, extreme beauty regimens and the like. If it takes you contorting your body to fit in this standard then what happens when your body cannot take any more of it? How many surgeries, masks, tonics, potions can you take over decades before your body collapses on itself? And the irony is that once you start to look 'ugly' from the very procedures you did to fit this so-called beauty standard...the very same people who called you pretty will turn against you and call you an ugly monster! How can you set a standard that negates features that are natural to your race and people like your eyelids, lips, nose etc? No way. I cannot. WOW over 50kg is considered fat? I'm a 5'5" American woman (average height here), and the last time I went to the doctor he told me that anything under 113lbs was medically underweight for my height, and 50kg is only about 110lbs. Imagine being considered "big" or "fat" while being medically underweight! Of course, I think they are shorter than Americans on average, but that obviously doesn't make up for thinking every woman over 110lbs is too big!

Korean beauty standards start there and will remain there. Because when they come out of their comfort zone to other countries, they'll realize that there beauty standard is a no no in 90% of the countries in the world. You can't be too skinny,pale skin and call that beauty standard. Go to other countries and you'll realize that a lot of men don't do beauty standard cos they go for what they love and not the necessary skinny and pale skin tone that most Korean people think that it's beauty. To me, Korean standard beauty stuff will forever remain in their Asia countries not other places.
Even a lot of Asians find it suffocating and hard adjusting to K-beauty standards. It is monotonous. There is no diversity. The natural variation is what makes people unique and beautiful.
I would agree with this. Thank goodness their standards will mostly stay over in East Asia. Despite many criticisms of the US there is way more diversity of looks that makes it much more interesting . Korean standards are very boring.

As a foreigner that lived in Korea, I have to be honest, you do have to be confident with your looks there because they do have a very distinct beauty standard that can mess up with your self steem.
I think it has a lot to do with the fact that they are still pretty much a homogeneous society, although you do see more foreigners now compared to like 10years ago.
The standards dont apply to us foreigners thou. I do feel bad for those girls in korea who dont fit and make all these enhancements to fit what people consider "beautiful".
Also, we need to keep in mind, in Korea appearance is everything. Like how you look and what you have (achievements, luxury, etc) matters more than your competency and values. This was told to me by 3 korean friends. They themselves say they feel is a curse because you lose job opportunities and you cant join some groups within society if you dont meet these "standards". Its really sad. One mentioned that people start feeling insecure since their birth because even parents say things like "you should lose some weight" , "your cheeks are so fat"...☹️ even its very normal there to give comment to people on their looks needing enhancement. One friend worked at a cafe and a lady came in ordered, started chatting while she was making her coffee and then she told her "if you lose more weight, you will be so pretty" 💀 like I was shocked when she told me that. She says is very common to have random people say stuff like this. The comment bothered her but she kept it to herself. She says that is what most people do here.
I do have to say thou I met Koreans who just dont care about none of this beauty nonesense and they do want their country to change specially for younger generations.

If I was in Korea I wouldn’t care about what they think of me because people are gonna talk regardless and not just in Korea it happens in other countries too so that’s why I choose not to care about what others say about me because at the end of the day they don’t pay my bills.

You could be qualified and polite but if someone else is qualified , polite and also pretty to their standard , that person gets the job , maybe even if they are a little less qualified than you. You guys are so frank and funny! I enjoyed the video. For me, sometime it’s hard to distinguish Korean idols and actresses who had plastic surgeries because they look so much alike. I guess they have certain kind of looks they want and that’s what they request to their doctors. One of my daughter’s Korean friends from high school had a plastic surgery. We visited her before my daughter moved to Tokyo. Her friend’s face was totally different. My daughter was so shocked and cried in the car on way back home. I watch a lot of K-dramas and it's damn distracting when these actors have so much work done that they can't do nuanced, micro-expressions. And yeah in Asia, there is sometimes very little filter. So my son is half Caucasian and I was in a Chinese restaurant where one of the waitresses tells me how good looking he is - and in the same sentence, asked if he took after his father. I did not know how to respond to that LOL (he actually takes after me because he is more Asian than Caucasian looking). Imagine body dysmorphia is epidemic in S Korea.

Its so sad really,im someone who is extremely insecure,i went there once and feld overwhelmed yet somehow comforted,as from where i am from,people think im way to much busy with my looks,always adjusting my hair,my makeup,eating way to light,while there,almost everyone did this. I saw how my friends saw me and it made me more self aware as to how depressing it looks. Im not ugly,but at what cost? I'm Moroccan (north african) and I studied with girls from Subsaharan Africa (Mali, Ivory Coast, Cameroun) and guess what, they used to touch my hair out of curiosity. It was never an issue for me, I know that my natural wavy hair isn't common among their nationals (at least not as natural hair), so it's just a matter of perspective, no need to be upset about it

Why are a lot of brown + black women still going 2 korea when they're known 2 be openly racist? I don't mean 2 offend anyone but I don't understand why anyone non-white would want 2 stay in that country long-term. I used 2 watch black TH-camrs/Vloggers in Korea around 6 or 4 years ago when Whitney Bae + Megan Bowen Megan Moon they were saying the same thing about how they never fit the beauty standard. I'm happy that it's worked out for Megan tho as she's truly settled into Korea + has a wonderful family, I think seeing stuff like that gives others hope. I've visited Japan as a brown woman just for a vacation + definitely encountered the "no foreigners gaijin unwelcoming vibes" and while I enjoyed the country I knew I would never plan a return trip bcuz of the xenophobia certain businesses + japanese ppl have there. As a brown person who has lived in Europe, Latin America, Canada, The US and The Caribbean, Korea, Japan + China def wouldn't ever be on my list in terms of Asia for relocation. Everytime I watch a video about Korean beauty standards, one person says it’s worse then in the west, and one will say it’s the same.
As an older woman from the US (which means I’ve lived through several reversals and trends of western beauty standards) I can safely say there is one very unique (and crazy) thing about Korean beauty standards. For sure.
Math
Never have I seen so many specific numbers given about female looks in my life.
In the west we say “thin” (most women don’t use BMI. They never have it measured outside a doctor’s office)
But Korea will say “this exact amount of KL” or “height divided by this number to get a specific amount of KL”
They have numbers for the angles of your shoulders
They have numbers for body proportion. For angle of cheekbones. For cm of forehead.
It’s the insane exactness and details, the numbers that kill me 😂
In American we are way more general and way too lazy for that.
Totally with you 😂 same here in Germany. I've only had a scale in the house since I was a mom. Especially as a woman, the body changes over the whole month, which does not necessarily always have to do with weight. As long as my dress size fits I have absolutely no reason to weigh or measure myself. I am active in sports and eat a balanced diet, the rest lies in nature and in aging. For me beauty comes from within. ❤

I have scars *all* over my body, I look like a teletubby, and when I look in the mirror I usually feel disgusted. I eventually just gave up on myself because I found no point. Barely anything worked. Self care and such felt more like for a special occasion rather than a normal or just-because thing. Even now. Here in America it's really like that too. Snatched waist, big butt, big boobs, thick thighs, good skin, white straight teeth, etc. ESPECIALLY for Black women. If you didn't fit at least a couple then you might feel a bit undesireable. That's when you know you have to REALLY depend on your personality to be accepted, if you're lucky. I never understood why people who looked amazing would say "my skin is horrible" or "ugh I'm so fat I look like a pig" sucker have you SEEN me??? Shut UP 😭 I don't understand at all. Jumping to the Korean standard, I remember asking about this as well, especially for the hair. There were times when I was growing up where I wished I was white, or at least had a perm, because barely anybody could manage my hair, and it was such a pain to do so. I wanted to have it straight, long, able to be curled, etc. It took me so long to just accept that there are some things I just could not do. So to hear about how it is there in a more in-depth discussion, it honestly still scares me, even though I know you both were affected by it (even though it kinda sounds twisted to find comfort in shared pain 😭). Getting kicked out because you are "too big"??? Pressured to change so many things about yourself??? People randomly touching your heair even if their intentions seemed innocuous (racism and CA are an entirely different convo)??? Good lord that country sounds like it's not for the faint of heart. The struggle is real, but I feel you. The nitpicking and obsession over being one type, let alone accepted as beautiful in general, I honestly have to applaud you both for not succumbing to all of it. Im afraid of saying this but in my own two eyes, Blackpink Jennie and the korean beauty standard are not that great. I live in a part of Southern California where there has always been a large Southeast Asian and Latino community. Girls that look a lot like Jennie have always surounded me. I dont find her beauty special. Where I live there is no side eyeing you if you dont fit a mold, but everyone would agree the archetype barbie doll is the most fascinating of beauty molds because it must be crazy to have that kind of male gaze and pretty previlge. However, we let the white girls alone, we dont try to be them. I cannot imagine living in a place where I am an oddity or outcasted because I could never ever fit in. Girls, get out of there. You would rock it in a million other places. You dont owe Koreans anything. You dont have to be in their good grace. Leave them with their Jennie obsession and ps / toxic spiral. The KBS culture cannot survive, it will implode, it is not conducive to the survival of their ethnicity. Sooner or later, they'll figure it out. But in the meantime, get out while you are young.

As a foreigner why should you care about their beauty standards? Understand their standard does not translate to being the best. Be yourselves Ladies and OWN it. It’s really down to South Korea to push this change. I find it a bit intrusive when non-Koreans feel it’s their duty to promote diversity and change in Korea. Korea doesn’t have to be the US or any major city in Western Europe.

FYI - I’m not Korean but have visited several time and lived in Japan. I just believe true change only comes when the masses of said want it. If not that, indigenous populace movements tend to be the most affect. See the Korean feminist movement for example - these are South Korean women pushing to achieve bette outcomes and experiences for other South Korean women.

Racism against Asians or blacks is common in America and Europe.
However, Asians or blacks who are handsome, big and muscular are rarely discriminated against.
Korean youth commit suicide because of the highly competitive environment. especially for study.

That's a very bold, broad statement to make. I would like you to back up that comment with some research that you can cite.
As for suicide the causes are much more deeper than being subjected to competition. We have some very highly competitive schools here in the US. In New York City at the high school level many of the city's special high school are mostly made up of Asian students (mostly Chinese). We don't see news stories of them committing suicide due to the stress in performing in the schools to maintain a high academic standard.
What I heard is that most ppl there didn't like it because it destroyed "their Image of either Ariel "a white skinned red-haired woman or the image the original fairytale by Hans Christian Andersen produced. It's obviously a European tale. I personally would also not like if Mulan is played by an non-Chinese, even less if she was played by a Caucasian or Black person. I don't consider this as racism.

Do NOT big chop. It took going all natural and just doing it in twist-outs for 2 years, but now my hair is healthy & long. The color also changed from a greyish brown to black. Have hope & keep loving your hair back to health 💛
