How Can I Know That It's Actually God's Voice?

  • How can you discern if the voice you're hearing is genuinely God's? How can you be sure it isn't just your own thoughts or even something deceptive?
Fr. Mike offers insight into recognizing God's guidance by asking key questions: Does the voice contradict Scripture or the teachings of the Church? Who does the voice sound like, and what are the characteristics of God's voice?
He explains that divine guidance is often confirmed by its fruitfulness-bringing lasting peace, joy, and alignment with God's will. Fr. Mike encourages us to trust God step by step. He says it does not take blind leaps to see how even the most minor acts of faith can produce meaningful fruit over time.

I was going through a divorce with two small children. I also lost my job and was behind on all my bills. I was crying and had decided that my children would be better off without me and had written notes to all my family members, and was ready to end my life. I then heard a voice that told me, "Don't give up." After the shock, and looking around the house for who said that (my children were at school) realized I was alone, I dropped to my knees and started praying to God, thanking him, for that message. That was 20 years ago.

I’ve been there. My divorce was horrid. My ex was determined to make me lose everything; our house but we bought with my money, any savings, his attorney even wanted me to sell my car and give my ex half. He stopped working to not have to pay child support for our 2 boys more than the CA State min. I was a stay at home mom for 11y and gave up my career. I had no income. I was convinced my kids were better off just getting my life insurance. I prayed and just wanted justice in my divorce. Nothing crazy. Instead my ex succeeded in making me lose everything. The judge just pushed every decision she could make “until the trial.” Trial? We didn’t have assets to warrant a trial. But again, he wanted me to suffer and succeeded. I was raised Catholic, boys were raised Catholic, was sending the boys to Catholic school, prayed and prayed again. Never heard anything back. Never got justice.
Had to rebuild my life from scratch. The only light at the end of the tunnel was a got a job back in my former career 🎥 🎞️ with the worst shifts available (night and far away locations) but I didn’t care. I needed my union job back to pay for the 2 boys I was now supporting myself. That was 14 years ago and I am still struggling financially as a result of that divorce.
I am glad you didn’t go thru with your thoughts and are here for your kids and that you’ve been here another 20 years. 🩵🩵🩵

Thank you for sharing your story ❤️ I'll bring you and your family to Mass with me tomorrow and offer you all up for it so that He may bless and heal you all 🙏 I had a similar experience, I wasn't contemplating ending things, but my mind was hurting with anxiety and I didn't believe in God - up until I got down on my knees and said "if You exist, I need help". 8 months later, I'm now a devout Catholic and I'm so thankful to God for it all ❤️💙🙏

When I went through my divorce I couldn’t sleep or eat. One night in bed I was incredibly sad and crying and I asked God for some peace. I heard a very pleasant and strong voice say”S--, go to sleep. You will have your peace.” I immediately felt a warm comforting calm envelope me and I slept deeply. And I’m deaf. I hear nothing when I take my aid out at night.

I recently got my Mass times mixed up after a fairly long absence. I was sitting in front of the Adoration, not knowing what time anything started and a clear message to start the Rosary came to me several times. I took out my Rosary and after nearly a decade, Mass began in the small room of the Chaplaincy. I was convinced I had turned up late and this was some kind of 'test' - I was half an hour early and God's presence helped me to wait and come back into the fold of the Church.

The first time I ever tried fasting was coincidentally the same day I attended a wake. This person committed suicide.
While reading about this person in his obituary and his faith in God, I started praying “Lord, Lord, I don’t care about any benefits of this fast, I just want him to be saved.” I repeated this three times. Halfway through the forth time a voice interrupted me and told me “It had been done!” It was loud and quiet, commanding but gentle, it was everything good. My hairs on my arm stood up and I got a chill down my spine and heard something like wind chimes after he said it. A wave of intense emotions ran over me but yet I felt incredibly at peace.
This was the first time I had ever heard the voice of our Holy God. God is good everyone.

Years ago, I read the verse in Isaiah where God says “My thoughts are not your thoughts nor are your ways My ways.” I started thinking about all of the divisive topics in America. I, like most everyone else, had strong opinions about pretty much everything. And, I realized, when forming my opinions, I never once prayed about any of them. What if His thoughts were different than mine? So, one by one, I started taking each topic to God in prayer. I’d say “This is how I feel about (insert topic), but, expand my view and broaden my perspective and help me to see it the way You do and make my heart like yours.” I was surprised and amazed at how quickly God answered those prayers. When I prayed about abortion, I was so humbled and surprised at the insight He gave me…to the point where He showed me that even I had blood on my hands. It wasn’t the insight I expected - but I was so grateful to know how my own actions unknowingly contributed to this horrible act. I knew it was God’s voice because it wasn’t accusing. Just merely opening my mind to something I was unaware of. And, that’s how it went with every topic. Not accusing at all - but very informative. I pray like this all the time now! He never disappoints! Thanks Father Mike for a great video!

I think it’s just important for all of us to remember to take everything to God in prayer. To ask Him to give us insight no matter how sure we feel about our positions. And also to ask Him to show us the areas our lives that He might not be pleased with so we can grow. His answers will be different and personal for all of us. It-- was consuming me. Well, I finally said (in my head talking to God) "why did i have to go through all that?" And just like that I'm my mind the words "to get to the other side" came to me and from that night on, I've been released from all of that. So it wasn't a voice, but God ANSWERED my cry! He is Amazing! God Blessn all of you!!

I find that the voice of the enemy always brings up the mistakes of others whenever things go wrong. It makes me feel like the victim while causing me to cry. Unlike God's voice that soothes me and calms me. He makes me better and more understanding. God reminds me of the forgiveness people have shown me and how I should do the same to others.

I'm a deaf man and have gone through periods of being separated from God and not going to Mass or Adoration. One day, while praying, I heard a voice inside saying "Go to Adoration tonight" and so I did. While in the pew, I picked up the Missal to go over the Mass readings I missed the day before. And lo and behold, the Gospel reading was Mark 7:31...When Christ cured a deaf man! As they say, "God doesn't arrive when you want him to, but He always arrives on time."

I work with children with special needs in schools, my agency had no shift since our British school holidays were starting. Monday 2nd September to cover at St Anne C of E primary school from 3rd, so I agreed thinking it was way too far from my area. At the end of my 1st day of work I felt the burning need to look up from a sign out iPad and there in front of me was a statue of St Anne with Mother Mary staring at me which shocked and took my breath away, yet made me feel at peace…and I remembered the novena and that God will lead you to where He wants you.

When I heard the voice of Jesus while praying before the crucifix at Mass, it was internal but very different than my own thought. I knew right away that it was Him. He doesn’t mince words but gets right to the point. I was praying for the recovery of my son who was paralyzed while active duty from an auto immune disorder caused by vaccinations at boot camp. I was worried that he might not fully recover and be discharged, which would have crushed him because all he wanted to do was serve our Country as a Navy Corpsman. He had barely started and now things didn’t look good at all. Jesus simply said to me “I am writing his story.” Those words say so much in such a short statement! Indeed, He is writing all our stories and He was letting me know He knew what He was doing! I was surprised at this answer to my prayer as it was unexpected, I had never ‘heard’ Jesus speak to me so directly. My son did eventually recover and served for 5 years. Jesus is still writing his story and mine too.

If I'm going to Church and come across a person who is hit by a car/bike then I would first take them to the hospital, instead of going to Church †

When you say "voice" do you mean Audibly? If that is not what he means, can someone please tell me what is meant by "voice"? I have never heard any sounds during prayer. My mind comes up with a lot of potential scenarios, but there is no voice. Is he talking about mind ideas? If so, why do people keep saying "voice" or "hear God"? This has been bothering me for years, and I am not getting any clarification

    • @whatasdf
      @whatasdf 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +15

I do not hear a voice audibly but often an idea/concept/answer pops into my mind during prayer or, more commonly, during post-prayer contemplative silence. It's like I've received a piece of information, colloquially I'd call that a 'voice'.
Often it's hard to discern the source of said 'voice' (internal vs external) but when I get lucky I have a clear feeling that it is coming from outside of my mind. From my experience, such times are the times it seems like God is speaking to me because those times have lined up with love, compassion, and wisdom in hindsight. That said, I always try to test such a 'voice' in a similar way Fr. Mike prescribes.
In my experience, submerging oneself in silence and attempting to 'listen to the silence' (within your mind, not literally thru your ears) has brought me closer to God. The "Unity Prayer" received as a private revelation of Elizabeth Kindelmann (allegedly composed by Jesus) contains the line "May our ears listen to the silence together."

    • @elizabethl6187
      @elizabethl6187 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      In my experience:
The Holy Spirit engages most frequently, but not in words. Can be images, impressions or feelings and most of them are gentle “course corrections” to my train of thought. Even in long seasons when I don’t “hear” from Abba Father or Jesus, the Holy Spirit is still near. I thank the Lord for sending the Spirit at Pentecost and can’t imagine Christian life without Him.
However, especially when I was a brand-new believer, the Lord’s words would cut through my train of thought like a PA system. Not audible; but not my own thoughts. The single phrase (like words cut into stone, all caps!) was usually repeated once, because I was so startled the first time.
Most rare, the words of my Lord Jesus. He doesn’t speak in all-caps, but He is still “gently firm.”
The thing is, if you are praying and studying the Scriptures and so forth, you won’t need as much counterintuitive, new perspective correction like that. It’s special, but usually as an experienced Christian your conscience is formed to the point where you only need a nudge from the Spirit.

@@whatasdf Thank you for your reply. So its not an actual voice, but rather an idea... I get so many ideas. I usually brush them all off, because I believe they come from my brain, and are not God talking, since I am not hearing anything. I will try this "listen to the silence" with my mind. That sounds very confusing. Would I be trying to not think of anything, or should I imagine my thoughts as noise, and then imagine cutting through the noise?

How are you hearing words that are not sounds or thoughts? Or am I mistaken, and they are thoughts, but you don't believe they are YOUR thoughts? When you say images, impressions, or feelings, are these like as if you were to imagine an image, or feeling? Or are you actually seeing and feeling the thing? I've been trying my whole life to hear God (whatever that means) and it frustrates me

@@bryantenorio368 Hello, Bryan. I want to provide as much helpful information as I can. I can understand your lifelong desire to hear from God!
I can hardly imagine a more perfect desire, and I am sure it pleases God, who also longs to hear from us.
The path to salvation doesn’t require personal messages, and we who do “hear” them would likely go astray if it were not for the primary means of Scripture and good teaching.
I am an adult convert, so I had to process the first messages to satisfy myself that I was not hallucinating. But these messages always had a surprising wisdom outside myself, and even commands were issued with a “take it or leave it” approach, so not really pestering me with intrusive thoughts. Remember that the prophets of old were usually misfits who were called far out of their comfort zone. They were ones who heard and obeyed (eventually), no matter what. It didn’t always feel special to hear from God!
As for your specific questions about what exactly is experienced, the important thing is that faith is a gift, and when we hear from God, somehow we just know it’s really God.
We have different gifts and missions. It’s a challenge sometimes, not to envy someone else’s path. Some day, you will see Jesus and speak to Him. When you get there, it will be enough.
God bless you, and I hope that I didn’t sound patronizing.

I find that even when the thing I'm being urged to do isn't something I particularly want to do, (like for example forgiving somebody who doesn't appear to be in the least bit sorry, or doing something that is really out of my comfort zone etc) once I hear it and accept it, I get such an overwhelming sense of peace and that's how I know it is of God.
(When I remember to...) I pray for discernment; I also pray 'Sacred Heart of Jesus I place all my trust in thee'. I pray that the Holy Spirit removes all things from me that are not of Him.

She was coming up to receive the Sacraments of first confession and first communion. I asked her what she heard Mary say. My daughter said that Mary told her to "Stop doing that!" I asked her if she would agree to stop doing whatever it was Mary told her to stop doing. I believe that she had a real interaction with Mary. She went to confession and she has had a pretty solid relationship with Mary ever since. For that, I am grateful. When I "hear" God. It's more of a gut feeling. He just sent me to Denver to a concert with my best friend on a whim and the experience was amazing ! But honestly it was like a calling to go and although the idea was ridiculous and not too prudent I took the chance and by God's grace I was blessed with his spirit ... Praise be to God 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

That home depot story was amazing and goes to show that even something we might consider an absolutely mundane thought, God will accept it and guide us in!

Nothing in his story indicates god even heard this question.
Had he gone to the other store, he may have saved the lives of 5 souls.
You don't think god should focus some attention to the situation in the middle east and Ukraine?

If listened to the "voice" that contradicts scripture numerous times and it has lead me to some of the most positive, cherished and important experiences of my life.
