Sorry buddy but we Ethiopian men and women are mostly a very dishonest people of big thieves and big crooks or scammers. So like any foreigner in Ethiopia, take good care of yourself and especially your properties in Ethiopia.
Damn bro, I am sorry to hear this happened to you. Pickpocketing is one of the most common crime in Addis Ababa and other countries as well. I was in Ethiopia back in September and I have heard so many stories about it and it’s amazing how they can get to your phone or wallet. Here are my two cents on how to navigate through Addis. DO NOT GIVE OR RECEIVE A HUG OR GET TOO CLOSE TO THE PEOPLE THAT YOU DO NOT KNOW. I know you are trying to be nice and friendly but it’s not the same for everyone. You are giving them an opportunity to use the situation for their own advantage and you will never see it coming. Also, even-though most of the people are very genuine and helpful, try to get all your information/directions from hotel concierges, don’t ask information from everyone you meet on street, everybody’s intentions are not always for the right reason. Be safe and I am sure you will have a better experience in my homeland.
when you always come to Africa, you are looking for something to destroy our name and tarnish our image. Don't come to us, we don't need you. Don't pollute Africa with your dirty manners and practices. You are not welcome here.
I 100% feel your pain, the same thing happened to me when I visited Ethiopia for the first time in my life back in December 2019 / January 2020 in the Bole area inside a bathroom at the Ethiopian Skylight Hotel… Also, you gave some pristine advice => 1) Wear zipper-pocket shorts/pants; 2) Don’t bring many valuables with you; 3) Be aware

Sorry to hear that you lost your phone 😢. Lots of respect 🫡 and love from Oakland California 🇪🇹 you always present my country good face. I wish the pickpocket know who you are and return your phone. 🙏
Sorry to hear about your iPhone Myer! Similar thing happened to me in Addis in Markato. Someone spit peanuts on my shirt and while wiping it off and being very apologetic they snatched my iPhone. It happened to me twice and I also had cash stolen twice. It’s not the safe city it once was you always have to be on guard. One of the reasons I haven’t been back for awhile is a few bad experiences the last two trips😢
Wow..I was not expecting to see you at this time in Addis..just to give you heads up, things are getting very tensive now due to the conflict outstretched in close ranges from the city..so, please look after yourself and try to stay close to the people you can count on.. Will look forward to new rounds of adventure🔔and sorry about your phone, my dad (Rest in Peace) used to have the same experience every time he had a smart phone..so, welcome to the club 😎 I liked your quick adjustment back to calm state of mind 👍
Hey Myer I feel sorry about what happened to your iPhone 12 while you were making that awesome vlog. I can imagine how frustrating and disappointing it must be to lose such an important tool for your creativity. Remember, setbacks are temporary, but your talent and determination are everlasting. Don't let this discourage you from continuing to create amazing content. Keep your spirits up, and I'm sure you'll bounce back stronger than ever. Sending you lots of positive vibes and support during this time. You've got this!
The guy in mobile shop said he don’t want to be filmed and you still put him on TH-cam?! Why y’all bloggers don’t respect people’s request? Pretty much asking for trouble smh.
I am very sorry, dear. This kind of crime is getting worse at present. Due to certain circumstances, things are not the same as before. Even during the day, the city is becoming quite dangerous. Be safe out there!

Sorry for what happened to you mayer , but welcome to the club , i was pickpocketed about three times , i phone, Samsung phones and some money , last time this happened to me may be 10 years ago , then i changed my way during walking at street by first no smart phone at the street only and only a simple nokia phone the one with flash light which worth $20 at maximum , second , no wallet in my pockt because fatty pocket is attractive for them like sugar to the ant, i just put a maximum of 500 bir in my three pockets and slide/save the big amount of money in my long socks for big expenses , since i used this approach i never got pickpockted alhamdlelah, always i keep my smart phone at the hotel
Uuuufff Dear i put my self in your shoes just when you notice you lost your phone that moment i thought it how you feel i m so sorry brother ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Sorry to hear that. How disappointing. Maybe you should buy one of those tiny bags you wrap around your waist under your shirt ( forgot what it's called). You can keep phone and money in it and it's discreet. Stay safe. In your previous video you mentioned about going to Eritrea. Looking forward to that because we don't see/hear a lot about that country. I hope it's safe to travel there.
Hey men selam new, Im sorry b/c of your phone. Pls take care from now on. I know it's hard a a content creator you have to keep rolling even if you're walking around. But bro it's expensive and also it's not worth it. Enjoy my beautiful country my guy
Don't have any open pockets put it somewhere inside your chest or in a zipper. I always carry a chest bag. Invest in one, it is a small bag wrapped on your front chest. They cannot get it no matter what this way. Also don't carry your phone or money openly on the street. If you want to take it out go inside a building, mall, cafe etc. Don't openly greet every stranger. Its not safe they will know you are foreign and maybe look for you to rob. I didn't even talk to too many people in my trip but if you are foreign, even from a different city, they will openly tell each other. Culturally people talk a lot. If you talk to one person then they will go tell another 10 people a new person is in the area, then those 10 will tell another 20, and so on and so on. Even one dukana store employee, a child, when I was buying something he openly yelled on the street to people "SHE IS FOREIGN!!!" 😐 At one point I became afraid someone will target me in my home because I lived alone as a woman. So I moved neighborhoods quickly. Try to be discreet instead. You will stand out even more as a non-Ethiopian. And if anyone tries to stand or walk close to you move away or come to a complete stop and let them pass you. This is what I did often. I caught a child trying to pickpocket my purse when I did this. I looked at his face and we both laughed like Aha! I caught you😅

They know each other & as everyone rushes to get in to the bus these thieves get busy doing their busness searching your pockets. Hey Myer sorry to hear that...that is a pretty old technique as it seems once long time ago around Merkato area, busy market district of Addis, someone spited on the trouser of my friend and immediately pulled out a napkin as if he regretted it and wanted to clean his mess. But my friend is very aware of all kinds of such stealing techniques and all he did was to ask the guy not to touch him at all and pass the napkin to clean his trouser by himself. That way we get out of that situation. Next time such a situation happens don`t allow people to touch or come closer to you.
You know that scale thing. I dont know how much you paid but one time me and my friend were drunk and just walking around and he accidentally stepped one foot on the scale and the guy tried make us pay 50 cents but my buddy was so stingy he argued with him for 5 minutes and finally settled on paying 25 cents. By the way the reason that guy at the phone shop didn't want to be recorded is because usually after a phone is robbed, it goes straight to shops like that. Sometimes they are traced by Find My Iphone and people come looking to ask questions. When you were recording him and you mentioned you wanted to buy a phone because your phone was stolen, he probably thought you suspected him and were recording to gather evidence for the police. He probably has loads of other stolen phones in there.
Addis looks like a very nice place to visit. I am trying to go there this year. I guess I have to be more careful with my cell phone & materials things.
For the next time just don't say to everyone "hello", you bring unwanted attention to u. This will make you more vulnerable to be robbed. Bcz some people will notice that u are new around and will approach u.
I also got my i phone stolen in Addis during my holiday. It was stolen by taxi driver. I didn’t got it back. Never trust anyone. Be one step a head of the thief. They are very smart.

For the next time just don't say to everyone "hello", you bring unwanted attention to u. This will make you more vulnerable to be robbed. Bcz some people will notice that u are new around and will approach u.
Yes exactly.

You need to have a small bag to keep all your stuff safe, not putting things in your back pocket. Unless zipped. Sorry to hear that.
I also got my i phone stolen in Addis during my holiday. It was stolen by taxi driver. I didn’t got it back. Never trust anyone. Be one step a head of the thief. They are very smart.
