I like that whiles he's talking humourlessly he's not joking, he states that society doesn't care so he's relating something serious but doing it in a light way to educate people to the sexism
A lot of people are ignoring the genius of the comedy. Dave Chappele pretty much dissects the moral & societal issues of male rape, and also societies attititudes towards men who are raped. He's a genius of the art. "Society doesn't give a fuck about make rape- there's no hotline for male rape" pretty much sums up Chappeles point.
+Madz Midz I think you're reading too mych into it...like the art critic that stands in front of a white canvas discussing the sublime only for the artist to go...wait, havent started yet!
+Carlos Parra i don't think I've read too much into it. I've taken a quote, explained it and given my interpretation. Comedy is an art form, and the only reason its also a progressive and genius art form that has been used for centuries for satire and social commentary.
+Madz Midz I get all that and I agree, is just that I dont see Chappelle (and this particular routine) as a modern day genius. He's excellent, no doubt, Chappelle show was a favorite of mine, but for me to call someone a genius....is not that easy. I dont toss that word around that easily. And I also thought your comment was an over-analysis of a simple comedy routine. But that's just an opinion. Cheers.
+Madz Midz The very fact that he knows it's ok to poke fun at men getting raped and can do it points at the problem when if he did that shit about women getting raped the room would be very quiet and tense. Dave's always been great at the political side of comedy.
Anyone else notice how long it took Dave to actually take a sip of that beer? He flirts with the idea of doing so at 0:05, 0:19 and 0:53. He finally does so at 1:15, and then he puts that shit down for good. Fuck beer.
That opening lign... "One of those people thats so smart that im uncomfortable in this world" ... I had to rewind that like 5 times cause its so TRUE. Dave's one of the only smart people that had the golden ticket and turned it down...not because he couldnt do it, not because he wasnt funny...but because he didnt want to be OWNED. Dave is a hero for all free thinkers out there and a great example that money can't buy everyone... A modern day hero as far as I'm concerned.
+Aradim90 I agree, it seemed he proved a point concerning the expectations of men and women's psyches when it comes to sexual assault. The laughter was sort of...odd to me, too. :(
+Aradim90 Yeah man, it's almost like they just laughed about the way he delivered the line "you gotta take that shit to the grave" rather than actually process it

+Psykoged I don't think that's what he's doing at all. What I think he's doing here is using humour to show the crazy double standard between men and women. Feminists are always the ones bitching about how under-represented women are and how they're second class citizens, which is bullshit. I don't see any male rape hotlines, no male rape crisis centres, nothing. If you're a man and you get raped, nobody one cares.
Ryan super One does not have to eclude the other. That was an obvious point in his bit as well of course: "Society don't give a fuck about male rape victims". That part was also very obviously most important to you, so that was all you managed to extrapolate from it. Speaking as a (male) victim myself, the most important part to me was probably the way he tackles the stigma and general dark emotions that come with it. I don't care much for people who make this a huge societal issue on the scale of some sort of matriarchal conspiracy against men. The issue is simply just unusual and/or taboo in our societies now, but there's no need to start making yourself out to be a victimized gender.
+Psykoged 'm sorry to hear of your experience, it happened to my best friend so this is a very poignant issue for me, he was never the same after and eventually committed suicide. But at no point did I say I was a victimised gender so please don't put words in my mouth, im simply stating the case as it is. And the fact is when it comes to the topic of rape there is very little, if any support offered to men, and that's messed up.
Ryan super Alright, fair enough. It seems we're just fighting different battles, us two. I didn't mean to put words in your mouth. I just saw the point you were making and immediately got reminded of a type of person I can't stand. The type that is aggressively anti-feminism. I think you know what I'm talking about. There's probably also the issue that we're from different countries I assume. I'm from Denmark, so the SJW climate is a lot different than in USA for example. There's stereotype here, but it's not like a double standard imposed by women.
+against the wind are you dense, the joke is the fact people don't give a shit about a man being raped, hence we are laughing at societal standards, not the actual rape ffs
hes making fun of the audience. look at him laughing by himself in the beginning hes like they dont get hes making fun of them while actually expressing a seriously disproportionate social issue
***** He says there is an animal inside everyone one of you to the crowd and then he proves it by making them laugh at rape victims .. an interesting point flonga1
i can tell by the way Dave looks at the audience as they laugh, that he is serious in discussing the topic and he is actually shocked and quite disgusted by their laughter. he is making valid points and trying to raise awareness to the crime. he is just required by his job to make it a little bit funny. but he is still trying to spread the word and using his platform of fame to raise awareness about the frequency of such a crime and its aftermath of guilt and shame felt by the person who was raped.
I think you're taking it a bit far because although it is true in some ways, neither women nor men report their rapists enough because they don't feel comfortable enough. I'm positive this was meant to be more of a joke than to raise awareness.
No NO goofydog07 i didn't type that he was disappointed when the audience laughs; you have no comprehension skills. he obviously is trying to make people laugh, but jokes have a seed of truth in them. comedians don't always make jokes about a serious topic FOR NO REASON or JUST FOR A LAUGH. you guys must be quite slow-witted to not realize that he's not "just being funny". smh if i have to explain it to you simpletons. do i also have to explain to you how babies are made?
heartaches27 you said he is shocked and quite disgusted with their laughter. That is stupid because obviously it is a joke. Men and women both do not report rapists enough so his point that it is a bigger deal for men would be wrong anyway. You're taking it too seriously. He is very obviously not trying to make a point.
The point about the joke was serious though and 100% perfectly valid. Namely, that men who get rapped are brutally ignored and nobody gives a fuck about them. He's a comedian, he makes the point bluntly and amusingly. But the message is clear to anyone with a mind.
The real joke is the first 20 seconds or so, where Dave points out that all humans have an animal inside of them, essentially, that they'd laugh at anything.
I’ve seen enough material to know Dave Chappelle is hands down my favourite comedian of all time. The way he can make a serious subject funny, his social commentary, his timing, his content, his stage presence, the use of his voice and facial expression, the list goes on!
This is my all time favourite bit. Dave takes a joke subject like rape, often thought to be punching down, and makes it about men so that the victim in the joke is no different to the attacker . He's a genius.
I know this was recorded years ago, but I’m so happy the Dave Chappelle has the balls to still use jokes that this new generation would get people cancelled over.
To the PC police and SJW on this thread: _“It's now very common to hear people say, 'I'm rather offended by that.' As if that gives them certain rights. It's actually nothing more... than a whine. 'I find that offensive.' It has no meaning; it has no purpose; it has no reason to be respected as a phrase. 'I am offended by that.' Well, so fucking what."_ --Stephen Fry
Jay Bertetto Then you would say "For my lack of a better word.. [ to describe..]". Your lacking, not the lack of words available for your use in a singular instance. The word was available, you simply could not bring it to mind, yes?
Richard Davis YOU'RE (.< "for my lack of a better word" means the exact same thing as "for lack of better words". Maybe I should have said: There are good arguments against the authoritarianism and lack of understanding coming from PC and SJW people. ...in fact, I'mma change it. Couldn't bring it to mind? I guess not quickly enough in that situation to actually care to. xD I just figured what I said would suffice.
Kombatjunky Carlin brought it consistently night in and night out. Dave has even stated being influenced by both these 2. As have many comics. I don't think you can have discussion of greatest without them when they have paved the way for so many of today's top comedians. Eddie Murphy too, but I think he rounds out that top 5. The stuff he did in the 80s not only on stand up but on SNL really changed the way people looked at the way comedians were viewed. Included in my personal list too is Bernie Mac, because in that kings of comedy tour, in the def jam work, there was a reason he always closed the show: Bernie was just a natural. He always could bring it night in and night out. I don't have an official ordering because I think it's quite disrespectful, but here's where I'd put them relatively: 1-2 Carlin/Pryor debate 3-5 Chappelle/Eddie Murphy/Bernie Mac
imo chappelle is better than Pryor just because he is such a natural at it and a lot of his material has a thought provoking premise behind it. Many comedians today or even back then I feel try to be funny. I know that sounds kind of redundant but chappelle seems so damn natural on stage whereas many others have to put in effort to be funny. even those on your list except for Carlin who's work I'm not all that familiar with.
What funny about this joke is that the joke starts when say "there's an animal inside all of you". The point he's making is that we say that you should not joke about rape, but when he says the victims were men it was open season for laughs.
The thing about being raped as guy, especially by another guy, especially being forcibly penetrated, is its the ultimate form of emasculation. I don't doubt victims of other forms of rape are traumatized, but I've never really intuitively understood what they go through.
Going out of your way to anticipate 'political correctness' stereotyped reactions makes you pretty terribly over-sensitive to criticism in ways that are worse than the 'political correctness' strawman puppets you just made up.
this bit is genius in the sense that it shows how difficult it is for men to suffer such things and even goes beyond to express the turmoil men have to endure, by social and intrapersonal standards, when dealing with any type of social defeat.
I honestly hate rape jokes but this one is great, because its not making fun of rape, its making fun of our culture around it.Men aren't treated the same as women when they get raped because theyre supposed to be "tough" and walk it off.Dave makes light of this because it IS ridiculous.
It's cause he knows that they're dumb enough to laugh just because he's a comedian and everything he says just a joke. This man is very smart, hopefully the world sees him more.
I know this is a joke, but if this were the other way around, they would've had a completely different reaction, and Chapelle did a good job exposing that here.
Exactly. This is like Anti-Anti humor. The subject and the way he talks about it shouldn’t be funny but it’s only “funny” because we weren’t conditioned to take a situation like this seriously. It not a comedy routine, it’s a deconstruction of the morality of modern society. It’s brilliant!
+Juan Rivera don't disrespect Tupac like that. Tupac spoke on real shit in rap and made people listen like Dave Chappelle makes people laugh about real shit in comedy. That's the comparison.
Tupac: dear mama, keep ya head up, life goes on, unconditional love, Do For Love...all real shit that you can still play 20 years after his death. And he had party songs like California Love and How do you want it to show he was a complete artist. Rap isn't just about saying multiple syllables and metaphors/double entendres that sound cool. Guys like Eminem or Jay Z might write more clever stuff, but all Tupac needed to do was be real and express how he felt in the moment to relate to people.

There's just something about Chappell he can literally talk about his day and it's hilarious
I just can't believe how funny this dude is! The timing and delivery is years ahead anyone
I'm one of those people that's so smart I'm uncomfortable in this world.... Best quote as of yet XD XD XD
Are you also scared to live?
I thought he said I'm small?!
No it's smart.
Through the humor, comes the truth. The sign of any great comedian
Dave delivers deep commentary with his brilliant comedic talent.
the single best comedian that there ever was.!!!
Just gotta get up. Caught me slippin'!
Is that the guy who wrote the Game of Thrones in the front row?
oh wow lol
OMG! Amazing set! Love Chapelle!
caught me slippin
'You gotta walk that shit off' This maybe the funniest line in any bit ever.
i've watched this so many times and the more i see it the more i realize how perfect his delivery is. so subtle and natural.
Definitely..Dave's mannerisms are perfect to his deliveries
I know this was recorded years ago, but I’m so happy the Dave Chappelle has the balls to still use jokes that this new generation would get people cancelled over.
Dave, drink the fucking beer.
CHIP, NO CHIP DON'T DO IT!
IT WAS TOO LATE
sorry officer, I didn't know I couldn't do that
Avoice inthewilderness WELL NOW YOU KNOW!!
That laugh in the background @ 1:14 . You'll know what i'm talking about.
This is one of the funniest things I've ever heard in my life. H is delivery is so perfect. Dave Chappelle is the GOAT of stand up.
To the PC police and SJW on this thread:
_“It's now very common to hear people say, 'I'm rather offended by that.' As if that gives them certain rights. It's actually nothing more... than a whine. 'I find that offensive.' It has no meaning; it has no purpose; it has no reason to be respected as a phrase. 'I am offended by that.' Well, so fucking what."_ --Stephen Fry
+Trollface Killa The great Stephen Fry, one of the few left to listen to. I dig the guy.
Jay Bertetto
There are better words, you just don't know them.
Richard Davis No shit, that's why I said "for lack of better words"? Because in the moment I couldn't think of those better words...>.
Jay Bertetto
Then you would say "For my lack of a better word.. [ to describe..]". Your lacking, not the lack of words available for your use in a singular instance. The word was available, you simply could not bring it to mind, yes?
Richard Davis YOU'RE (.<
"for my lack of a better word" means the exact same thing as "for lack of better words".
The GOAT.
Pryor or Carlin can be the GOAT, Dave is in the top 5 though
Trollface Killa Nah, gotta disagree. I look at overall cache of material. I believe has been more consistently funny.
I don't have an official ordering because I think it's quite disrespectful, but here's where I'd put them relatively:
1-2 Carlin/Pryor debate
3-5 Chappelle/Eddie Murphy/Bernie Mac
imo chappelle is better than Pryor just because he is such a natural at it and a lot of his material has a thought provoking premise behind it. Many comedians today or even back then I feel try to be funny. I know that sounds kind of redundant but chappelle seems so damn natural on stage whereas many others have to put in effort to be funny. even those on your list except for Carlin who's work I'm not all that familiar with.
deez nuts All I will say is watch some of Carlin's work. It's across TH-cam. He does what Dave does before he died on a whole different level.
What funny about this joke is that the joke starts when say "there's an animal inside all of you". The point he's making is that we say that you should not joke about rape, but when he says the victims were men it was open season for laughs.
The way Dave looks as he pauses before he slams home another statement is perfection
'caught me slippin' got me crackin up
lol caught me slipping lmao love you dave.
The blonde lady in the front row was a real one. She kept her scowl about rape jokes even when it was about men. I can respect that. 👍🏾
Chappelle is such a goat that this 10 min set of it has been cut into 3 videos and each of them are legendary by themselves.
"that's the most gangsta shit" lol
The thing about being raped as guy, especially by another guy, especially being forcibly penetrated, is its the ultimate form of emasculation. I don't doubt victims of other forms of rape are traumatized, but I've never really intuitively understood what they go through.
1:15 he finally takes a sip from his beer
Chappele is the only comedian that can have me cry laughing in 2min & 9secs😂
If he did this same joke today so many people would get butthurt and "outraged" saying rape isn't a joke. Fuck political correctness.
Going out of your way to anticipate 'political correctness' stereotyped reactions makes you pretty terribly over-sensitive to criticism in ways that are worse than the 'political correctness' strawman puppets you just made up.
Dagmar the Bomb
He was making jokes. Not points. You're hella cute though. Blond and with glasses. Imagine the O face on that one.
Dagmar the Bomb Agreed.
spinNspiral If you really can't see that there's a meaning and truth behind a lot of jokes then you seriously lack the ability to think critically.
You welcome baby. umm umm. sweet sugar.
When he said "he must have raped thousands" the guy in the background got a 1000 yard stare, he must have been one of the victims.
This comment was posted 8 years ago and the 1000 yard stare has been a meme even back then? 😂
1:09 The guy in the background looks like one of the thousands that didn't come forward.
this bit is genius in the sense that it shows how difficult it is for men to suffer such things and even goes beyond to express the turmoil men have to endure, by social and intrapersonal standards, when dealing with any type of social defeat.
George R.R. Martin is enjoying the show from the front row.
I honestly hate rape jokes but this one is great, because its not making fun of rape, its making fun of our culture around it.Men aren't treated the same as women when they get raped because theyre supposed to be "tough" and walk it off.Dave makes light of this because it IS ridiculous.
"That's the most gangster shit" lol
"I'm one of those people that's so smart that I'm uncomfortable in this world" words to live by. Love you Chapelle
Didn't he make this joke to prove a point or something like that? 1:45 he seems like he's disgusted at the audience for laughing about it.
He really was. This wasn't really a joke, this was more like a test. He proved his thesis.
It's cause he knows that they're dumb enough to laugh just because he's a comedian and everything he says just a joke. This man is very smart, hopefully the world sees him more.
He's woke and trying to separate the lizardmen hiding in the forest
I know this is a joke, but if this were the other way around, they would've had a completely different reaction, and Chapelle did a good job exposing that here.
Exactly. This is like Anti-Anti humor. The subject and the way he talks about it shouldn’t be funny but it’s only “funny” because we weren’t conditioned to take a situation like this seriously. It not a comedy routine, it’s a deconstruction of the morality of modern society. It’s brilliant!
Dave Chappelle is the Tupac of Comedy...
don't disrespect Dave like that...
+Juan Rivera don't disrespect Tupac like that. Tupac spoke on real shit in rap and made people listen like Dave Chappelle makes people laugh about real shit in comedy. That's the comparison.
Rikishi Sopoaga Tupac And Biggie are the most overrated rappers of all time
Tupac: dear mama, keep ya head up, life goes on, unconditional love, Do For Love...all real shit that you can still play 20 years after his death.
Rikishi Sopoaga it's my opinion bro it's subjective. they're overrated to me
dave has mastered the balance of seriousness and comedy. his level of comedy has always matched the level of seriousness in a given issue.
that guy in the background on the left doesn't look happy... he's thinking too hard about somethin.. loool...
i watch tha LF videos and there are about a third bad ones, half ok ones and then there's Chappelle..
I fell of the bed when he said "hughh ...got raped" 😂😂😂😂😂
0:17 Dave holds his beer like a muppet 😂
he speaks the truth, the world dont care what happens to men
Rape joke about male victim. Funny, all women laughing
Rape joke about female victim. Sad, all women feel offended
yup yup yup
So fucking true
+CivilAviation1 Your point?
Some comedians have made rape jokes about female victims and the crowd still laughed. It just depends on how you do it.
Plain Popcorn These days with political correct speech I'm sure the whole crowd would laugh.
+CivilAviation1 Wait, doesn't that contradict what you said about female rape victim jokes not being funny but sad instead?
... the most gangsta shit... I'M FKIN DEAD
perfect immaculate delivery, so talented
