    Great video,The info on transmission temps is very important. ITS not if but when it runs hot. Here is a tip ,when you stop for cool down leave the engine running because the transmission oil is cooled by air flow across the radiator an or trans cooler. If you just turn it off ,the heat in the trans has no where to go an will sit there an boil. Thanks Jon keep the videos coming.

    This is one that is on my short list: to climb up to a fishable lake in the Eastern Sierra... my kind of deal. I really want to go up to Funnel Lake!
    This video reminds me I need to finish my "transmission hardening" ( temps are a huge issue and weakness with the auto trans in Isuzu Troopers ) and resolve my issue with sliders ( ain't got none) because I've "cased" the bus a few too many times. In any case, I love this video and you have me chomping at the bit to get up there.

    JonDZ if you had to do it all over again would you stick to the Honda Passport or switch to a Toyota 4Runner?

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have videos about why I chose the Honda Passport. I talk about previously owning a FJ cruiser and how it did not meet my requirements as a daily driver. The 4runner is like the FJ cruiser but with a longer wheel base, so I would never consider the current model 4runner. I’d probably consider a Jeep Wrangler JL though.

    Great video! Looking to go up with my buddy who has a gen 2 tacoma, totally stock. Is the north route easier than the south route in your opinion?

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Nick! The north route drops down into funnel lake, so while the route was a little less rocky, it may be hard to return on that side. The route I ended up scouting down would be the only way up that isn’t too too severe, but it’s kind of a hard trail to find. The north route is less rocky, but there’s tighter turns, so I’d would be harder for a large vehicle, but we did manage to get a power wagon through.

    Are the lift kits you’re talking about at the 16 minute mark suspension lifts or body lifts? I would imagine that they are lifts that allow you to get bigger tires on and don’t actually increase your minimum ground clearance. Is that right?

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're thinking about body on frame vehicles with solid axles, which lifts completely different than a unibody AWD. There's a lot to research and learn if you aren't familiar with these setups. Let's say you try to build a unibody AWD thinking that lift springs might be better, but now wheel articulation is reduced and your AWD is now crossing up axles on a little 8 inch rock.
      You'll need to completely purge your knowledge of how a 4WD lifts. There's basically 3 ways to lift your AWD. The worst way is the spring lift, because you reduce wheel articulation (wheel tuck). The most popular way is with spacers. Because this is a unibody, a spacer just becomes an extension of the subframe. Typically 2 inch strut spacers are used, because anymore and the axles would be at too severe of an angle. I have a 3.5 inch lift on my Honda Passport which uses 2.5" front / 2" rear "strut spacers and a 1 inch subframe drop (lowers the engine, transmission and rear diff). The subframe of unibody AWDs typically sit much lower than the wheels center hub, so lift kits typically don't allow for much larger tires. The Mid-sized Hondas line up 2 inches below the center hub, a 4runner will line up 2 inches above the center line. A Subaru has something called a strut "top hat" which prevents mounting tires taller than 2" from stock. The best type of lift kit for a unibody AWD would be a long travel coil over setup where the spring and strut are both longer than OEM, allowing for increased wheel articulation.

    The trick is to use 4lo to climb. I helps the engine and the transmission as you are doubling the torque, same thing to go down hill 4lo will help to act as engine brake, you wont have to use your brakes to often. People that live in mountain passes with step inclines have been doing this for long time. Back in the days of locking hubs people used to leave them on the free position to use a sort of 2Lo and be able to do switch backs without biding have the extra torque going up and the engine brake on the way down.

    Would a stock 4runner/Tacoma/GX need an aftermarket engine oil or trans fluid cooler?

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So, my friend with current model 4runner had his trans temp hit 230F, so he pulled over to let it cool. He would only know about this because he has a Scangauge 2 to monitor his temps. I’m sure many Toyotas drive up “non-stop”without knowing their transmission fluid lost effectiveness. The older GX470s will be even more susceptible. I always preach, MONITOR 1st before> COOLING.

      My brother has a 99 Land Cruiser 100 series with the same 4.7 v8 thats in some 4Runners and the GX and on several long climbs has noticed the trans temp hit 230+ so pulled over to let it cool. • @mattjohnson7660
      @mattjohnson7660 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Can confirm! I did this in a 4Runner in hot weather. Your added weight will play a big role as well! I had a 100lb dog 210lb friend and myself 200lb plus an RTT full fridge, a bunch of camping gear and 2 7 gallon water tanks. That’s a big factor in the engine pulling all that weight up the initial incline. Pulling over can sometimes just be part of the game especially in super hot weather. I have an app that monitors trans temps and DID NOT wait for the oil temp sensor to come on. Just take it slow and enjoy the views and you’ll get there no prob in a runner. If you don’t have any added weight you might even be able to breeze through it without stopping!

      Thanks Lance, all is well! I was warned by the Subaru community to not attempt this trail, so I never tried. Honda doesn’t advertise their Passport as having “4 LO”, but the Jeep Compass and Renegade Trailhawks have a 4 LO button that basically just locks it in 1st gear. The ZF9 transmission is shared between these vehicles, so in Jeep crossover terminology, I have 4 LO 😃. Hey…. It worked! I really get to do some 4 LO exclusive stuff 😃.

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring

      I don’t have experience with one. All I know is the Scangauge works well, but i understand that it’s not the most aesthetically pleasing thing to look at. What does the ultra gauge do that the Scangauge can’t? I should probably contact them to see if they would send me a test unit. If it works, then they would benefit from free marketing.

      It depends on what you consider offroad. iVTM4 equipped Hondas were tested in Dakar, Death Valley, Hollister Hills, etc. If offroad to you means True Rock Crawling, you are correct. These midsized Hondas make an amazing daily driver. They’re sporty and comfortable, and are still capable of completing a trail like **in this video**.

      @@JonDZ_Adventuring doesn’t the anxiety of always watching your trans temp get old though? I was just talking with me buddy about how we don’t understand how one of biggest players in the off-road game, Honda, has never made a more dedicated off road car/truck.

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@MissouriAdventures I don’t have to constantly watch it. I never had the trans temp warning light come on and I want to keep it that way. So, on this trail, there’s been so many 4WDs that have unknowingly overheated their transmissions (240F+). Everyone should monitor their temps. Just 2 weeks ago during our Mojave road trip, a Jeep JK wrangler overheated his transmission, and the whole Jeep went into limp mode. 1 month ago, a Nissan Xterra hit 240F going up a hill when my temps were at 195F. Sometimes weird things happen, and it’s just a smart idea to monitor things.
