      Mentally I do yes as outdoor there is alot more to focus the mind

      I’d love to hear your thoughts why I can consistently hold better power numbers inside (standard non-erg mode) than outside. This is using same power meter. Outdoor rides are on closed course so I can’t attribute it it traffic or stops etc.

      Sure seems like it, especially on the mental aspect. Wouldn’t proper calibration be important too?

    Indoor training was much harder... Until I got a good fan. I tend to track HR more than power, and I was finding that without a quality fan, 135bpm felt the same as 165bpm on the open road with good air circulation. Since adding the fan to my setup, I'm now finding that indoor/outdoor really aren't too far apart.

      Agreed. I thought I had a good fan setup, 2 fans in fact but I was still sweating buckets and indoor training was really quite unpleasant. Then I bought a Wahoo Headwind and everything changed. I can now do full blown workouts indoors and don’t feel that I’m been hampered by overheating any more, there’s still some sweat but it’s a fraction of the amount that there used to be and I feel I’m getting much more out of my workouts

      I have similar experience for now. 150bpm feels like my 180bpm outdoor. I will try better fan as you are saying and will feedback later if I not forget. Thanks for the advice!

    A nice fan makes a huge difference! I remember not riding with a fan, and those rides were always brutal

    Earlier I used to train really indoor. It was really hard. Now I have my "indoor" training setup in old caravan. I put a heater on before training until there's a few degrees Celsius plus, which is perfect. Of course I have a fan too. Now I don't get overheated and training is almost as fun as outdoors 💪🏻😁

      I also train in my garden shed, it's right around 8-10°C now, add a fan and it's perfect. That being said, i preffer riding outdoors anyway :)

    thanks for that recently recovering from Covid just have to take it easy for awhile and be patient i like that formula 1:2 ratio. Never knew this

    #gtncoachescorner​ I've bought my first running watch as a bit of a Christmas present to self and am wanting to start using heart rate zones to pace my easy & long runs. I've done some basic benchmark tests and found I have a max HR of 189 and threshold heartrate of 167 or thereabouts. Presumeably I should set the top end of zone 3 at that threshold number rather than sticking to 80% of max which would be much lower? If so then how do I set the other zones, especially the boundary between zones 2 & 3? Thanks for all the great content - I've been watching for years but this is my first comment!

    #gtncoachescorner​ Hello, I have registered to my first triathlon this year (olympic distance). I come from a swimming background, i can swimm 1500m under 25mins at a swimming pool. My problem is that I'm not used to swimm in open water (yet) and most importantly i'm a bit anxious about the "mass start" and all the "punches" that might come with it. My only goal for this first triathlon is to enjoy it as much I can. Should I start with the slower swimmers (to avoid the intensity of the race start) or would it be better to dive in with the best swimmers with risking not being at ease ?

    My question is does cycling improve running endurance ?

      It will help with building up your aerobic capacity. I use it as cross-training.

      Hi Paul, Any form of cardio will be advantageous, how ever using the muscle groups used will be the area which might be worth more thought, running and cycling both use predominantly the legs however as cycling is a non impact sport it won't build so much upon those stabilisation muscles to support your body weight when running! We hope this helps :)

      @@gtn Thankyou GTN, I fractured my ankle before Xmas so just been focused on bike and swim at moment slowly getting back into running. Doing my first IM 70.3 in Stafford June 12th this year. Im an ex army 230lb runner

    Many of the knit uppers (Nike Flyknit, Adidas Primeknit, etc.) have enough give that even with conventional laces the shoes can be pulled on. My trainers stay permanently tied these days.

    #GTNCoachesCorner As runners, we know that it is not necessary to cover full distance marathon in training, because you need long time to recover, but how about biking and swimming? Is it necessary to bike 180km and swim 3.8km in training? Thanks!

    #gtncoachescorner I’ve got a Wahoo Kickr and a single sided power meter crank on each of my road bike and TT bike (both Stages). If I put the Kickr on ERG mode and run a ramp test I find the road crank reads c.20% higher watts, whilst the same with the TT crank reads around 5% higher than the Kickr. I’ve done a warm up and spin down/ zero reset on the devices. All the manufacturers think their devices are correct. Is this discrepancy common and how do you plan training, fitness tracking (indoors and out) and race pacing if you have different devices reporting different numbers for the exact same workout?

    Follow-up question re: FTP test uphill (8m30s) - why is doing an FTP test on a hill any less valid than doing an FTP on a level surface? FTP is "max sustained power over 60 minutes", so can you really put out more power over 60 minutes when you're on a hill? Surely it's just as hard, whether going uphill or flat?! #gtncoachescorner​

    #gtncoachcorner notice you use road shoes for most of your videos. What is the benefit of getting a TRI based shoe compared to a ROAD shoe? If you could just get one which would you get and does it make more difference to the distance you're racing?

    #gtncoachescorner I've been looking for my first tri bike but with only 159cm of height it's difficult to find one that fits. Canyon makes great bikes at good price points but they put smaller wheels on the smaller frames. How will smaller wheels affect performance and should I rather just save up a little more for the more expensive options that put regular sized wheels on their smaller bikes?

    #gtncoachescorner I suffer last year of shin splints on both legs. Left food first and most painful and then in the later part of the year the right leg but not as painful. The right leg was with a treadmill and now I do not want to step into one with fear of getting injured again. Been out for 2 months after finishing my first half marathon as off season and I replaced my old shoes that made me suffer the left leg shin splints. I use the foam roller almost 2 or 3 times a week but is there any exercises that one can do to help the shin splint get stronger or preventative exercises?

    #gtncoachescorner I am training for my second open water triathlon. It is a short distance event so transition times are important. I am struggling to get my wet suit off my legs despite using appropriate lube. Someone has mentioned cutting off the legs of my wet suit somewhere about 'mid calf' level. Is this a good idea and if so where should I make the cut? My wetsuit already has what the manufacturer describes as super-stretchy 2mm neoprene on the calves! Advice appreciated.

    #gtncouchescorner Hi GTN, what training paces best predict race pace? How does one calculate a realistic race pace? On my way to shaving 45min off for my goal 2:30 half-marathon time in April, my pace now is at 8:23, 8:40, and 9:06 for fast, slow, and long runs, respectively.

    Regarding changing shoes, I want to enter my first triathlon this summer, it will be short distance, is it really worth using cycling shoes with clipless pedals and changing to my running shoes, or could I use flat pedals with toe clips and my running shoes? would this damage the shoes too much, or would there be power loss due to the cushioning of the shoe (or is there another disadvantage that I have not considered, beyond safety)?

      The biggest benefit of clipless pedals is they are more power-efficient due to the "pulling" effect. I would recommend using them, I think the benefits outweigh the marginal time added from changing shoes. There's a reason all the pros do it!

      @@jamiefuhrman403 I woud fix my feet to the pedals, but maybe with toe clips instead of clipless pedals.
      I find the benefit more in a secure footing and consistent foot placement.

    Outdoors you also have a lot of shorter or longer pauses going downhill. You rarely do this on a trainer.

    Great show as always! My ERG mode on Zwift feels impossible sometimes and I have had to turn it off.. Trainer feels harder..
    What are your thoughts on crossfit while on a 16 week program for half Ironman? I don't want to give up crossfit because I like the weight lifting and HIIT but I don't know the effect it will have on the Ironman training.. I do it about 3 to 4 times a week and 6 days of Ironman training

    i always use elastic laces, it's more a practical side i am not the best in making a knot and it commes loose very easy

    You mentioned elastic laces aren't for everyday use, why is this? I've found them comfy and practical for a lazy person to slip shots on and off!

      They will stretch, and defeat the object of a well-fitting shoe. I ran with them for ages and developed ankle niggles. Race day only for me now!
