For those curious, it is now understood how the kinetochore microtubules "pull" the sister chromatids: the kinetochores depolymerize the microtubules, which results in the breakdown of the microtubule into tubulin subunits. This effectively shrinks the microtubule, resulting in the chromatids moving towards the centrosome.
Incredible! This should be pinned. It's amazing how almost everything at that level operates by this sort of electromagnetic gravity from the molecular bonds. It blows my mind how many complex processes such a simple force can perform.
An easy why to remember the name of the stages is the acronym IPMAT, which stands for, "I Pull Me A Twin." And it actually makes sense... to a certain extent (Interphase, Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase and finally Telophase). Hopes this helps! Aleksi.
This guy is such a blessing and has a gift! I'm studying for my ATI nursing exam and I know of several nurses and read a lot of reviews from other nurses and nursing students to watch his videos. I don't know why my brain doesn't want to retain this stuff when I read it, but the way he explains everything and draws it out, my brain understands and retains the information. Thank you so much sir for making these amazing videos, I could just hug you.
Im a Medicine student, and I think that you explain things way better then my proffesor. You give the students a intuition about what is happening, and whats going to happen, and thats the art of teaching. Thank you Sal.
We need teachers like this guy in schools, not just people who stand still and lecture the entire period. A good combination of visuals and verbal explanations!
4:27 THANK YOU for specifying "chromatids" instead of referring to everything as a chromosome. It makes it sooo much more complicated when chromatids are all referred to as chromosomes, especially when figuring out how many chromosomes are present. YOU ARE A GODSEND.
These are the best biology videos I can find on TH-cam. I don't even look for videos by anyone else because yours are so clear and organized. I have a test on this today and I feel great about it thanks to these videos. I was very confused about the usage of "chromosome" at different phases (referring to single or double strands) and now I get it. I can't thank you enough.
Sal...Sal...Sal...I rise with you... You accompany me throughout my day, my lecturers will never understand my obsession, my fixation with you...you have me hooked to your videos At nights, I watch them before I go to bed...I use them for exam prep I am a university biochemistry major, biology and criminology double minor Thank you for making my life a tad bit easier
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THESE!! YOU ARE A LIFESAVER! I took my last exam, and for the first time I wasn't paranoid the whole time & knew the material! I've noticed in biology, you can memorize the terms, but if you just use flash cards, etc it's not the same as actually UNDERSTANDING the material and how everything works together. If you don't, tests will always get you with a technicality. Example: Centromere, centriole, centrosome. I learned all this material in 20 minutes! Thank you so much!!
i have a biology exam tomorrow and you have taught me more in 20 minutes than what my biology teacher has taught in 1-2 hours worth of lessons.... seriously if i get an A or A* i shall appreciate your videos for the rest of my life :D
I'm taking Biology online and this guy explains things way better than my teacher and actually sounds like he is enjoying it unlike my professor who just sounds bored. Thank you for making this video!
your a god man you make it so easy to understand none of my college professors do it as well as you do and I am paying for them and while I get better quality from a free youtube video thanks alot !!
I wish my teacher explained things as clearly and as well as you do. Your vast knowledge is inspiring. Thanks for all the help and clarification on any subject I seem to encounter!
these videos are magic! i swear i didnt understand a single sentence in my textbook but now after hearing you explain it my textbook suddenly makes sense. THANK YOU!
See all of these people coming together to help eachother, this is the good side of youtube, the side without the trolls, a place where people can learn
I just want to say, what you are doing for the online community is a true act of philanthropy that has helped me (and thousands of others) unlock my true potential as a student and possibly contribute to society one day.
WOW! Khan you did it again! Thank you! My online instructor just has said read the book since the class began and I cannot learn by reading page after page after page! Godbless!
This is an amazing video I didn't understand anything about mitosis before this video. My teacher has been teaching it to us for 2 weeks and I don't know what she is doing. Thank you so much
great job .Keep up the good work . my prof teaches this subject in class for about 2 weeks and learn nothing from her. After watching this for 20 min I am confident that I will do well in final :) Thx again...
@CrystalSundrop They're using "I passed my algebra test" as an acronym for the phases of mitosis. Interphase (I) Prophase (passed) Metaphase (my) Anaphase (algebra) Telophase (test)
Question, at the 5 minute mark when you drew the replication during the S phase, should there be more chromosomes than you drew? 2 copies of green creates 2 more copies of green rather than 1 and 1 because the cell is diploid? Just learning Thanks
I LOVE THIS CHANNEL, THANK YOU SAL!!! I'M A SIXTH GRADER LEARNING THIS (not trying to brag at all :)) AND I CAN UNDERSTAND VERY EASILY BECAUSE OF YOUR EXPLANATION! GOOD WORK!!
thank u very much sir...infact i couldnt understand mitosis and meiosis... earlier but now i understood clearly ..thanks a lot.. i love listening these vedios...your way is just like encouraging students towards science by making this
thank you very much... I did not knew that, now its clear, thanks!!! are you a teacher? u seems like u know a lot about this stuff!!! I am just prepairing myself for the lpn program.....
oh my. thank you so much. seriously im sure i speak for everyone when i say you pretty much saved my ass in biology. my teacher doesnt explain anything and after each day i just review whatever lesson we learned on this account. You are the best!
Thank you ,Thank you Soo much for making this concept crystal clear for me . I was having a little trouble getting the point from textbook but now I get it 🙂🙂
Wow, I seriously wish I have a teacher like you!! My End of Course for Biology is tomorrow, and I'm watching all of your videos for it! Thanks SO MUCH for uploading these.
This helped so much! I have an honors biology test tomorrow and I needed a quick over view but got lazy x] and the pretty colors really help keep me concentrated oh! and you sound just like my friend :o
I found the video really helpful, thanks for sharing this content. I have one suggestion, or rather one question to pose; is the plural of nucleus nuclei or nucleuses? 0:501:35
mid term coming up trying to learn all i can and guys i have a cool way of remembering the phases its called Pmat -prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telaphase.
Amazing. I'm finishing up my last couple of weeks of Bio then I can move onto my upper div. classes. So no more science for me hopefully for the rest of my life. Thanks for making it happen! You're genius.
I have a DNA quiz tomorrow and didn't get mitosis that well. Now after watching this I am wondering why I didn't get it. Sal makes it so easy. THANKS KHAN ACADEMY!!! YOU'RE THE BEST!!!
How can the guy be so well rounded and basically expert in every single subject ?!?! Great video, thanks!
He's got like 3 master degrees so yeah
Michael Gee so that explains the stuttering...
Ernesto Henyo I reckon you're perfect, then...
Zi Gyllenhaal Typical Bengali!
Zi Gyllenhaal He has staff members/tutors who make this video. He doesn't make every single of them!
99% people have a test tomorrow...(me included)
I do :(
I do... I got a low score today sooo yeah... ●︿●
Mock GCSEs?
I HAVE E X A M S ! ! ! ! ! ! !

Great,
Im also curious about how does the kinetochore attach to a specific centromere
@@whathey3113 kinetochores are disk like structures along the sides of the centromeres
Hero! thanks!

hey thanks for this
I'm a Bio Major and these videos are very helpful to me when I need to review some basic concepts. Thanks.

Being a mix between an auditory and kinaesthetic learner this is so unbelievably helpful
around 9:56 the prophase stage looked like a person eating butterflies lmao
i love you, we thought the exact same thing
Ahhh it works!! Thank goodness!!! I might actually do well on my test on Monday thanks to you!!

At around 9:25, you made a mistake. You said centromeres but you were supposed to say centrosomes.
I perceived it too.
^ Why so serious? Why so serious?
HHAHAAAHAH
Also on 18:31, suppose to be centrosomes instead of centromeres
Thank you ,Thank you Soo much for making this concept crystal clear for me . I was having a little trouble getting the point from textbook but now I get it 🙂🙂

Are you still alive after 11 years
I understood your explanation better then the one my teacher gave me in my own language..
watching Khan Aca has restored my faith in Bio:D thank you Sal!
I think he meant centrosome not centromere in telophase. Nobody's perfect. What a great teacher!
Wow I’m here after this posted more than 11 years ago and it’s still beneficial.. thank you sir so much . I feel like I could teach this myself now 😂
I think you got centrosomes and centromeres mixed up sometimes. However, great effort! Thanks for the video, it helped me alot!
