Up until a couple years ago I’d never even heard about Vortex. I bought a rifle used and it had a vortex scope, missing the elevation cap. I e-mailed y’all, trying to order a replacement cap that I was willing to purchase. Vortex sent me replacement caps and a hat for free, I didn’t purchase the scope but because the way I was treated, I’ve bought 3 vortex optics since then.
Love the podcast. Have several vortex scopes. You never talk about light transmission. Zeiss 92%. Swarovski 93%. Vortex unknown. To me anyway. Thanks gents.
Man, that was one of the best podcasts you guys have made. I always enjoy Ryan and Mark bouncing off of one another. I must say that i have to side with Mark, on using the 3-15. I live in Saskatchewan where long shot opportunities are quite common, and that extra magnification helps. Keep up the good work guys.
What we REALLY need more conversations about are scopes for long range precision and ELR shooting.. best budget options for newbies just getting into long range precision shooting.. MOA or MRAD.. reticle types and understanding "christmas tree" type reticles and using all of the info they can prrovide you with.. FFP vs SFP.. using your magnification correctly.. holdover vs dialing the turrets.. scope height over bore.. illuminated or non illuminated reticle.. BDC reticles and truing your rifle to your reticle drop points.. using your reticle for sizing and ranging targetss.. Ballistic calculators and Apps.. reading and calculating windage without a Kestrel.. knowing your G1 and G7 BC.. Look guys.. I know you have already touched on ALL of these things in other videos.. but some of us would really appreciate MORE indepth discussions on a few of these topics.
Like you said, they covered most of these in previous episodes and honestly if you can't cover it an an hour and a half long 10 minute talk, probably should look at a class or a book instead.
Thanks for a great podcast guys.. this confirms what I preached to friends and co- hunters all the time... they struggle along with big, heavy, too high magnification optics and end up paying the price when they have to make a quicker shot.
Hey guys, love the talks! I have aot of rifles and various scope types. Living in the low lands of the Appalachian mountains I certainly fall into that 25 yards on out to pasture fields nearing 300 yards. I keep falling back into purchasing BDC scopes in the 2x12x44. The old guy in me was brought up using straight power scopes and practicing hold over so the BDC feels comfortable. As an avid reloader I like to tune my reloads to the rifle for max accuracy. Then back off to hunting mode in lower magnification. Love the Vortex scopes!
Got my new 3-15 on a new T3X and ordered another for my Weatherby mark v .270 wby mag. Great glass! Great podcast. I absolutely love this podcast. You guys have such useful insight and info.
I have a vortex diamondback 3.5-10x50 it is amazing. Nothing too powerful and it’s a crystal clear scope that’s easy to use. It is an excellent scope for deer hunting where I live.

I will be completely honest Ive owned 2 Vortex scopes in the past....one was back in 2016 Viper HS 4-16....had to be sent back because debris in the reticle and later a 1.5-8 Razor and it was OK but but I quickly sold it. So obviously not the biggest fan until this new Viper HD line....have been shooting a 2-10x42 on my custom 30/06 and it is literally the best whitetail hunting scope I have ever used. The glass is a huge upgrade from the model it replaces, FOV is 20ft better, illumination push button is way better than the Razor line, and the reticle with daylight bright DOT is absolutely fantastic. The difference in the Viper HD glass and the Razor LHT, the difference is so slight to my eye its not even worth talking about. A very sincere thank you for whoever on the Vortex team that was responsible for the Viper HD line, especially the 2-10x42, 400 yards and in.....perfection.
When I started hunting in Missouri a few years ago I grabbed a TC compass in 30’06 and put a Crossfire II 3-9 on top. I have yet to encounter a deer I couldn’t hit with that setup and am so pleased with the optical quality. I’ve seen better and a lot of worse so find myself content with the opening statement, but have learned a lot when looking at a rig for my son and daughter and my future western state hunts

For most people $500 is a ton of money for a scope. I love the quality of Vortex scopes. Even the lower price scopes feel like good quality. Thanks for remembering us po folks when creating new products.
I love vortex don’t get me wrong I have 5 of them but my newest scope isn’t tried out the new light weight hunting line from Arken I got the 4-16x44 with titanium rings and was 330 shipped can’t beat the price for all you get with it I much recommend Arken or vortex to anyone interested
I still get great use of my Strike Eagle 1-6. I’m a poor working man so I have to get best bang for my buck. I love the BDC options, set it and forget it. The strike eagle 2 , 1-6 works great for .223 and 308. Man I still got a Crossfire 2, 3-9/ 40 on a 308 of mine and it’s never given me a reason to change it. A hunting rifle in 308 zeroed at 200 does everything I need. Everyone does things differently.
I have the Diamondback 3.5-10 on three of my rifles. Love this scope. The amount of light it allows in at 3X is amazing. Took a 150 lb hog at absolutely last light at 90 yards on 3X. Saw it clearly with no issues, one shot kill.

I really enjoyed this podcast, I think it may be because it validated many of my past purchases. I generally hunt hogs at night, with a light from a blind. At my lease everything is very close so I use a 300 blk SBR topped with a PST Gen 2 1-6. When I head to Texas some are close while others reach out to 200 yards and I generally use either a 223 or a 300blk with HS 2.5-10 or my 308 with a LHT 3-15. The LHT is overkill for where I hunt, but it helps when I'm doing load development. Big believer in matching the tool to the task.
WOW, was that an excellent watch. Interesting w/o Jimmy. I have been enjoying the "Vortex Nation podcast" for many years now, along w/ the "Vortex Edge" Training Series, or anything that comes out of Vortex. My favorites still have be the shows w/ Jerry Miculec, The PSR/ELR show and the "Get to Know The Hosts Show". I am still LMAO at the beginning watching Ryan look at Jimmy and Mark argue like a married couple. Hilarious. I have owned Vortex products now, for about 6 years (transitioning from German glass) and upon my first purchase (a Red Dot) I had to deal with Customer Service. After a few minutes on the phone, w/ one return call from Vortex later, I was COMPLETEY FLOORED. Many a company claim "Customer Service" but when it comes time to deliver... ouch! That CAN NOT be said of Vortex. I found them to be courteous, friendly, kind (not that false corp disney kindness), VERY knowledgeable and "Over The Top" Professional. I had a new Red Dot in my hands in matter of days. Due to this professionalism, and kindness, I am now on my 11th Vortex product, w/ 2 more items on the Wish List. The actual reason for writing this long diatribe is due to my recent (6 May '24) phone call to Vortex Customer Service. After several months of trying to find an answer to a perceived problem, I gave up and decided to call. While the guys always state "give a call or email us", I am usually reticent to do so. Now I know the guys also state that they work the phones, and that I have no doubt, but I figured it is usually done by other pros in the shop and Mark, Ryan and Jimmy "help out". So you can imagine my utter shock and surprise when I dial the number and get "Hallo.... Ryan here, how can I help...?" I was dumbfounded and took a second to get my bearings, perhaps a little "star struck". Ryan and I had a good laugh at my silliness and then proceeded on to matter at hand. Well it took Ryan all of 1 - 2 mins to solve my problem. So I asked if he would mind offering his opinion on some 'glass' that would work on a PRS in .22LR. I have Vortex mounted on my PRS 6.5 creed and my .338 lap. We chatted for several minutes, and in the end he gave me 3 scopes/options to look at. Then early this wk, this podcast shows up in my inbox, and so I had to give it a watch and then started howling when they got into the subject of .22LR Long Range and PRS. I would LOVE to go w/ the "Vortex Strike Eagle" 3x18 alas the cost is up there, so I went w/ the other option Mr. Muckenhirn suggested, a Vortex Venom. Now trying to decide 3x15 or 5x25. Good old Fix 4 or 6 power scopes, simple light sturdy reliable(my Leupolds are anyway! And bright enough for my uses) and plenty of magnification from 50 to 400m
I have two 3-18 Strike Eagle scopes and they are my favorite scope in that price range. Perfect magnification range, and I love the RevStop Zero System turrets.
I have one tailored to the .300 BKLOut. I has never fail when shooting to a 100, 200 and 300 yds. And the illuminated reticle is a big plus. Just that.
I really enjoyed this episode. I just bought a 7mm-08 for Texas Axis or other exotics and Mule Deer in the Panhandle. My hunting distances are anywhere from 50 to 300 yards so I'm leaning towards the new Viper HD in 3-15 with the MRAD reticle since I'm also interested in trying some distance shooting at the range from time to time. I'm leaning more towards the Second Focal Plane just because I'm not really going to need to use the reticle to hold over a target at 300 yards and would rather the reticle be a constant size and adjust by magnification than trying to find a balance between reticle size and magnification.
Recently outfitted my mini 14 with the crossfire scout scope and I'm really impressed how much you can get done with a 2-7, hopefully it can help me take some coyotes this fall
Great video guys, I’ve always been a 3-9 or 4-12 kinda guy. After watching this podcast, I’ve gotta get my hands on the 2-10 Viper HD and give it a try on my 30-06 Virginia/Pennsylvania deer rifle!
I really like the idea of the 2-10x but I see no reason to have such a steep weight penalty for a hunting scope. This isn’t unique to Vortex. A long, heavy 30mm scope is the norm for hunters and scope makers now. Gross. I remember the last generation Leupold 2-7x weighed like 8-9 ounces. Now, double that figure is considered lightweight.
I am a big fan of Vortex and have a couple scopes a Crossfire II and a Viper. I initially bought the Crossfire II 6-24x50 for an air rifle used for pidgeon hunting (overkill I know) and was really impressed by it, so when I was buying my Sabatti TLD in 6.5 Creedmoor, for long range shooting, I knew I wanted another Vortex. The salesman said the Crossfire II might not be as good at 1,000 yards and put me on to the Viper, I was sure I wouldnt notice the difference, but I was wrong, what an amazing scope! I've just bought the Viper 5-25x56. But, even the Crossfire II range is better than some much more expensive scopes!
How about the Vortex Legacy Series? High gloss black to add to your older blued classic rifles, something that goes with your beautiful wood stock blued steel rifle.
I find the 2x7 power scopes to be the best power range for medium game like deer and elk. 16x power is the most magnification for hunting conditions for small varmints like prairie dogs. Folks do not understand how much more refinement and optical qualities is needed for high scope magnification especially with all variables power scopes. That is why an inexpensive fixed 4x scope can equal the optical quality of a more expensive 3x9 variables.
I own 2 venom, an eagle, and a diamond back on various rifles. I am also a Iowa revolver hunter. Recommended me a vortex product for my 460 smith and wesson.
I really appreciate your guys take on hunting shots- 600 yards and in, would like to hear how much practice it takes to get confident at that range and how you did it. I think too many of us shoot out to 1-200 yards get some nice groupings and then extrapolate out to 3-500 yards with our ballistic charts and kestrels thinking they are a replacement for repetitions when they are really supplemental tools to fine tune our performance.
I'm a big game hunter in Colorado and run a Vortex Strike Eagle 5-25x56. I don't mind the weight on my Bergara B-14 Crest as it helps tame the 7 PRC recoil. I want a balance of overall gun weight. Light enough to hike around, but heavy enough to shoot accurately. With the extra zoomies, I don't need to carry a spotting scope to identify if a bull is legal.

This question is for Ryan. I have numerous Diamondback 4x16x42 scopes and a few Diamondback 3x10x50. I hu t pretty much all open coutry in eastern Nebrasks. In your opinion, which one would you choose?? Also have Crossfires. In total, over 30 Vortex scopes and a couple Leupold. But I bounce around on scope power and objective bell size. What are your thoughts
Will we ever see something with lower magnification from the razor lht ffp??? Maybe a 2.5-12.5 or 3-15 or 3.5-18??? I know the reticle would need some tuning to optimize it for use at lower power, but my God that would be the ticket for me for a do all with primary focuses being split evenly between western predator-big game hunting and flat range combo gun.
Edit, I love in San Diego, our Mule deer are small but generally moderate ranges with our rolling hills, but Arizona Cous deer and northern California and Utah Idaho Colorado Oregon and even Texas and New Mexico are hunts I rotate through I have family in Wisconsin and also in Georgia and want to be able to use the same gun. Just one or maybe 2 rifles for all my predator through elk and bears. Like a 6.5 creed and a 7prc or ought 6 or 284ai or 6.8western.
@@chipsterb4946 objective bell anywhere between 42-50 would be fine with me, more compact and mounted lower is a plus, but so is better low light performance, so that wouldn't be a deal breaker for me either way, but first focal plane medium power lightweight hunting tactical is something that doesn't really exist rn. Athlon Helos BTR gen II is the only thing in that realm, but it's over 25oz so not exactly lightweight, and I'm not in love with how fine the reticle is on the low end.
At what distance/magnification does adjustable parallax become really beneficial? Your discussions of first vs. second focal plane and illuminated reticles were useful.
I already had a viper HSLR 4-16x50 laying around when I got my Sig Cross for Christmas so I threw it on there. Love the scope but been looking for a lighter and more compact option as well as less magnification to take advantage of the lightweight and handiness of the rifle. I’ve been waiting on the new Eotech vudu x 2-12x40 but this new viper 2-10x42 has caught my eye. Love having options
4-12 power is OK 4-16 is a sweet spot in power. 44 mm objective is OK. 50 mm is a good choice too. Anything beyond you need to know what you are up to and won't be asking for help.
I’ve personally struggled a bit with a big game hunting scope with a 4x bottom end (too high) and a 12x top end (also too high). 2-3x to 7-10x is more than enough for me, and I suspect it’s more than enough for a lot of other people too. 1” tube provides more than enough adjustment for a big game hunting scope also. I know, nobody asked :)
What scope do you recommend for a 7mm PRC/300 PRC 600 yards and in ? What do you recommend for a 300 wsm 400 yards and in ? What do you recommend for a 7mm-08 at 300 yards and in ? I hunt extremely tight bush within 50 yards and longer range shots to 600 yards. So i want a do all low light scope that must be clear.
Here is a role play for you. Savage 110 switchback, 20 moa rail, heavy barrel in .308. Looking to shoot 150 to 165 grain around 2600 to 2700 fps. Range out to 300 yds. With a max of 500 yards. Hunting southeastern deer at field/timbers edge. The budget bakery idea holds true. $200 to $400 roughly. The scopes that have caught my eye, crossfire ii or diamondback tactical, 4-12x40 or 4-16x40. Your thoughts??

Been asking for a SFP with higher mag and objectives in the Razor LHT. The Viper 5x25x50 is a nice start. Still think there's a market for better glass and light weight in Razor line but excited to get my hands on the new Vipers!
I have an MRAD Razor LHT 3-15X50. I find choosing the perfect scope seems tougher than the perfect rifle. By that, I mean after hours of cartridge and rifle selection, figuring out which scope can be frustrating! In the past, I have chosen flat shooting cartridges, like the 300 RUM, and go with 300-yard Bull. Then knowing approximate holds at 400 and 500. I've decided to give smaller cartridges a whirl, and figure dial up if needed, might be a good idea? I purchased a Weatherby 307 Range in 7 PRC and a Savage Klym in 6.5 Prc. I want to be able to hunt deer, bear, elk, come what may, from black timber to big cuts. If I mount the MRAD LHT on the 7 PRC, which should I get/mount on the 6.5 PRC? The same 3-15X50 LHT, or the MOA 3-15X42 version? Would I be better served keeping both MIL, which, by the way, am liking MIL very much. On the other hand, the smaller objective scope might fit the lighter Savage Klym better? As a Newbie to dialing, I wonder if the 2 different systems might cause confusion in the field? Anyone?
In my personal opinion, the only reason to choose second focal plane over first is for cost. But I would rather just save a little longer and get FFP. But I also know that some people simply don't need it. It could be argued that no one does. It is a luxury. But worth it for me.
So after months of agonising over scopes for my new Tikka T3X Hunter stainless in 30-06... Ive settled on the Strike Eagle 3-18. I've watched so many videos, especially yours. Please don't tell me I'm wrong in this video. I'm in Australia, hunt Western Queensland and Northern New South Wales. It's just for longer shots, mainly on pigs. I run around with two different 30-30s for anything inside 200... I'll probably use the Tikka for deer ar some point, maybe a Cape bull or a water buffalo, maybe. They might be anexcuse to get a 45-70. But please, God, I hope this doesn't tell me I'm wrong about the strike eagle😂
My whitetail rig for thick woods of NY is rem model 7 with a bosh and lomb 1.5x5x20 rifle and scope vintage 1980s it's about due for a new scope am going to look into the viper pst ..thanks 👍
I would LOVE for y'all to do an expanded talk on the Crossfire & Diamondback line. When I was younger and didn't have the financial freedom to spend more than $200 on an optic I was lost. I bought cheap, no name garbage off Amazon because at least for $120 I could get a high magnification scope with all the bells and whistles right? It didn't take long to realize those scopes were complete garbage and I would've been better off with a Crossfire 2 with lower magnification and no features. I still have my "entry level" Crossfire's and I still use them occasionally.......but once you've been spoiled by the Viper line it's hard to go back.
I do have a question on the scopes with the locking exposed elevation turrets. Can i still get a custom turret made for my gun and that scope that can still use the locking features?

I think the viper HS 2.5-10 would be a beautiful fit for that rifle. I love mine. I have a .270 with a Diamondback HP 3-12 on it and it works nice, but it’s not as pretty as I bet that browning is.
I'm sold on the Viper HD 2-10 and 3-15. I have rifles that I'd mount those on. I'm also very excited with and sold on the Strike Eagle 3-18×44 FFP, though I will have to purchase a new or new to me rifle and chambering. Also considering the weight of that 3-18. I'm not a competition shooter, only a hunter. Any ideas from anyone?
Inherited my dads late 60's early 70's Rem 700 in 270 with an old redfield illuminator 3x9 looking to put that scope on my 22 lr and put something more modern for shooting 400 yards and in at the high end realistic is 300 yards (for Elk sized and smaller) unless I shoot alot more perhaps. I just noticed that old redfield which was peak for it's time im struggling at dawn and dusk looking at deer in the woods with open lanes cut in them(identifying rack size not trying to shoot anything but a nice buck). at 140 yards and in some what. Crosshair is option is not much of a concern as I think a simple one with a proper sight in should be point and shoot out to the 300 mark roughly.
I was unable to identify a deer at 1st shooting light in heavy timber this past November with a LPVO at 1x. Not enough light gathering. That was the only shot I got last year and I couldn't take it.
I am building a SPR/Recce style AR15 and looking for what is the best type of scope to go with. I have LPVO on 2 other AR's but not sure if a scope would be a better option
38:01 Ryan, Mark, can y'all simplify for anyone whose uncertain about how much magnification they want, at a given range? Using the Viper examples... Using the 2-10 vs the 3-15 examples... At max 10 power, do we simply divide the range by 10, for an estimate of what the field of view should approximate? For magnification alone, before considering light quality, at range, etc... So a 200 yard target, at 10 power magnification, would look similar to the target 20 yards away on 1 power (naked eye) Whereas a 750 yard target, at 10 power, would look similar to 75 yards at 1 power... But the 3-15, at 15 power magnification, would bring that image of the target 'visually closer', appearing as if it were only 50 yards, instead of 75... Not accounting for light, parallax, ballistic trajectories and performance, any other variables, Is that fairly accurate if oversimplified?
If it is fairly accurate as an approximation, Then considering my effective range with a 2-10 power optic, I could get a fairly decent understanding of what range I want to use the optic within...
I would be interested in seeing a 10 minute talk on the Hornady Superformance line. I hunt with a Rem 700 Classic from 1988 chambered in 35 Whelen. I believe it has a 22 inch barrel and I’m wondering if there is an advantage to shooting superformance ammo? Are they able to produce faster speeds by using slower burning powder that peaks longer compared to Nosler, Remington, and Barnes?
I’m not sure what their recipe is, but they most definitely have an increase in velocity with no obvious increase in pressure. I chrono’d the 308 150 grain sst in my 16” sig cross and I was getting around 2730fps. Which to me, is screaming out of a 16” barrel and also isn’t bad when the box posted velocity is 3000fps which is most likely in a 24” test barrel

Part of the ocean clan and family. I just started hunting rifle, had a bow the last three years. i rock a strike eagle ontop of a remington 783. this isnt my choice set up. it was the only things left after the covid lockdowns in our small town shop. i told myself no weapons till 10 past of getting out. was stationed in falujah so i never wanted weapons after. anyway ten years past and i went in and that was available. Hawaii has shit gun laws and it affects the shops here and what we can buy and sell. i decided i would use my social platforms to help promote hunting and better a2 policies in hawaii. started shooting content every day and planning to call my channel kipu. I love the gear. all my glass is vortex. hoping one day to work with you guys and get a sponsorship or on the team some how. i was looking at the army new tech scope and i know forsure the sniper scopes interface and screen will be really amazing and im super interested in that. out side of that looking to upgrade my set up and was wondering if anyone is willing to trade a strike eagle for a more longr range hunting scope. these all have amazing lifetime warranty so you can always get a new one at trade in. if you ever in Hawaii lmk... aloha
I sell a lot of scopes. Mostly Vortex. Eye relief was mentioned. The entire Diamondback line, less one scope has terrible eye relief. The eye box in general isn't very forgiving. The new Viper HD line is a huge improvement. What I call "Viper milk"(stray light) seems to be mostly gone. The 2.5-10 HS was always a home run. The Venom line has taken over the budget friendly FFP from the DB line. The Crossfire II line has the budget end squared away. What I'm getting at is why. I can't speak for the rest of the world, but in my sample size, that whole lineup needs to go. Replace them with a couple of fixed power offerings, including a scout scope. PLEASE. I will sell the heck out of them.
Man, the new Viper HD series is almost too good to be true... I mean doesn't this threaten the Razor LHT? It's almost half the price, and what, weighs a couple ounces more? Comparing the two side-by-side, I would be hard pressed to spend the extra for seemingly very little gain. Very nice run down of the lineup. Thanks!

I need a scope I can drop on the ground, drop in the mud, drop in the snow, submerge in water, wack against a tree, and that can go from a 74F house to a 5F field and it just works. Because if I can trip, drop, walk into or otherwise stumble I will. Plus its gotta work beautifully at very first and very last light.
Up until a couple years ago I’d never even heard about Vortex. I bought a rifle used and it had a vortex scope, missing the elevation cap. I e-mailed y’all, trying to order a replacement cap that I was willing to purchase. Vortex sent me replacement caps and a hat for free, I didn’t purchase the scope but because the way I was treated, I’ve bought 3 vortex optics since then.

I live in Saskatchewan where long shot opportunities are quite common, and that extra magnification helps. Keep up the good work guys.

What we REALLY need more conversations about are scopes for long range precision and ELR shooting.. best budget options for newbies just getting into long range precision shooting.. MOA or MRAD.. reticle types and understanding "christmas tree" type reticles and using all of the info they can prrovide you with.. FFP vs SFP.. using your magnification correctly.. holdover vs dialing the turrets.. scope height over bore.. illuminated or non illuminated reticle.. BDC reticles and truing your rifle to your reticle drop points.. using your reticle for sizing and ranging targetss.. Ballistic calculators and Apps.. reading and calculating windage without a Kestrel.. knowing your G1 and G7 BC..
Look guys.. I know you have already touched on ALL of these things in other videos.. but some of us would really appreciate MORE indepth discussions on a few of these topics.
Like you said, they covered most of these in previous episodes and honestly if you can't cover it an an hour and a half long 10 minute talk, probably should look at a class or a book instead.
Thanks for a great podcast guys.. this confirms what I preached to friends and co- hunters all the time... they struggle along with big, heavy, too high magnification optics and end up paying the price when they have to make a quicker shot.

Hey guys, love the talks! I have aot of rifles and various scope types. Living in the low lands of the Appalachian mountains I certainly fall into that 25 yards on out to pasture fields nearing 300 yards. I keep falling back into purchasing BDC scopes in the 2x12x44. The old guy in me was brought up using straight power scopes and practicing hold over so the BDC feels comfortable. As an avid reloader I like to tune my reloads to the rifle for max accuracy. Then back off to hunting mode in lower magnification. Love the Vortex scopes!

I have a vortex diamondback 3.5-10x50 it is amazing. Nothing too powerful and it’s a crystal clear scope that’s easy to use. It is an excellent scope for deer hunting where I live.

I will be completely honest Ive owned 2 Vortex scopes in the past....one was back in 2016 Viper HS 4-16....had to be sent back because debris in the reticle and later a 1.5-8 Razor and it was OK but but I quickly sold it. So obviously not the biggest fan until this new Viper HD line....have been shooting a 2-10x42 on my custom 30/06 and it is literally the best whitetail hunting scope I have ever used. The glass is a huge upgrade from the model it replaces, FOV is 20ft better, illumination push button is way better than the Razor line, and the reticle with daylight bright DOT is absolutely fantastic. The difference in the Viper HD glass and the Razor LHT, the difference is so slight to my eye its not even worth talking about. A very sincere thank you for whoever on the Vortex team that was responsible for the Viper HD line, especially the 2-10x42, 400 yards and in.....perfection.

When I started hunting in Missouri a few years ago I grabbed a TC compass in 30’06 and put a Crossfire II 3-9 on top. I have yet to encounter a deer I couldn’t hit with that setup and am so pleased with the optical quality. I’ve seen better and a lot of worse so find myself content with the opening statement, but have learned a lot when looking at a rig for my son and daughter and my future western state hunts

For most people $500 is a ton of money for a scope. I love the quality of Vortex scopes. Even the lower price scopes feel like good quality. Thanks for remembering us po folks when creating new products.
I love vortex don’t get me wrong I have 5 of them but my newest scope isn’t tried out the new light weight hunting line from Arken I got the 4-16x44 with titanium rings and was 330 shipped can’t beat the price for all you get with it I much recommend Arken or vortex to anyone interested

I still get great use of my Strike Eagle 1-6. I’m a poor working man so I have to get best bang for my buck. I love the BDC options, set it and forget it. The strike eagle 2 , 1-6 works great for .223 and 308. Man I still got a Crossfire 2, 3-9/ 40 on a 308 of mine and it’s never given me a reason to change it. A hunting rifle in 308 zeroed at 200 does everything I need. Everyone does things differently.
I went with 6-18x44 Vortex!
I have the Diamondback 3.5-10 on three of my rifles. Love this scope. The amount of light it allows in at 3X is amazing. Took a 150 lb hog at absolutely last light at 90 yards on 3X. Saw it clearly with no issues, one shot kill.

I have the vortex viper gen 1 and I love it.
I really enjoyed this podcast, I think it may be because it validated many of my past purchases. I generally hunt hogs at night, with a light from a blind. At my lease everything is very close so I use a 300 blk SBR topped with a PST Gen 2 1-6. When I head to Texas some are close while others reach out to 200 yards and I generally use either a 223 or a 300blk with HS 2.5-10 or my 308 with a LHT 3-15. The LHT is overkill for where I hunt, but it helps when I'm doing load development. Big believer in matching the tool to the task.

I have been enjoying the "Vortex Nation podcast" for many years now, along w/ the "Vortex Edge" Training Series, or anything that comes out of Vortex. My favorites still have be the shows w/ Jerry Miculec, The PSR/ELR show and the "Get to Know The Hosts Show". I am still LMAO at the beginning watching Ryan look at Jimmy and Mark argue like a married couple. Hilarious.
I have owned Vortex products now, for about 6 years (transitioning from German glass) and upon my first purchase (a Red Dot) I had to deal with Customer Service. After a few minutes on the phone, w/ one return call from Vortex later, I was COMPLETEY FLOORED. Many a company claim "Customer Service" but when it comes time to deliver... ouch!
That CAN NOT be said of Vortex. I found them to be courteous, friendly, kind (not that false corp disney kindness), VERY knowledgeable and "Over The Top" Professional. I had a new Red Dot in my hands in matter of days. Due to this professionalism, and kindness, I am now on my 11th Vortex product, w/ 2 more items on the Wish List.
The actual reason for writing this long diatribe is due to my recent (6 May '24) phone call to Vortex Customer Service. After several months of trying to find an answer to a perceived problem, I gave up and decided to call. While the guys always state "give a call or email us", I am usually reticent to do so. Now I know the guys also state that they work the phones, and that I have no doubt, but I figured it is usually done by other pros in the shop and Mark, Ryan and Jimmy "help out".
So you can imagine my utter shock and surprise when I dial the number and get "Hallo.... Ryan here, how can I help...?"
I was dumbfounded and took a second to get my bearings, perhaps a little "star struck". Ryan and I had a good laugh at my silliness and then proceeded on to matter at hand.
Well it took Ryan all of 1 - 2 mins to solve my problem. So I asked if he would mind offering his opinion on some 'glass' that would work on a PRS in .22LR. I have Vortex mounted on my PRS 6.5 creed and my .338 lap.
We chatted for several minutes, and in the end he gave me 3 scopes/options to look at. Then early this wk, this podcast shows up in my inbox, and so I had to give it a watch and then started howling when they got into the subject of .22LR Long Range and PRS.
I would LOVE to go w/ the "Vortex Strike Eagle" 3x18 alas the cost is up there, so I went w/ the other option Mr. Muckenhirn suggested, a Vortex Venom. Now trying to decide 3x15 or 5x25. MOA or MRAD (My entire world is MOA).

I really enjoyed this episode. I just bought a 7mm-08 for Texas Axis or other exotics and Mule Deer in the Panhandle. My hunting distances are anywhere from 50 to 300 yards so I'm leaning towards the new Viper HD in 3-15 with the MRAD reticle since I'm also interested in trying some distance shooting at the range from time to time. I'm leaning more towards the Second Focal Plane just because I'm not really going to need to use the reticle to hold over a target at 300 yards and would rather the reticle be a constant size and adjust by magnification than trying to find a balance between reticle size and magnification.

Great video guys, I’ve always been a 3-9 or 4-12 kinda guy. After watching this podcast, I’ve gotta get my hands on the 2-10 Viper HD and give it a try on my 30-06 Virginia/Pennsylvania deer rifle!
I really like the idea of the 2-10x but I see no reason to have such a steep weight penalty for a hunting scope. This isn’t unique to Vortex. A long, heavy 30mm scope is the norm for hunters and scope makers now. Gross. I remember the last generation Leupold 2-7x weighed like 8-9 ounces. Now, double that figure is considered lightweight.
I am a big fan of Vortex and have a couple scopes a Crossfire II and a Viper.
I initially bought the Crossfire II 6-24x50 for an air rifle used for pidgeon hunting (overkill I know) and was really impressed by it, so when I was buying my Sabatti TLD in 6.5 Creedmoor, for long range shooting, I knew I wanted another Vortex. The salesman said the Crossfire II might not be as good at 1,000 yards and put me on to the Viper, I was sure I wouldnt notice the difference, but I was wrong, what an amazing scope! I've just bought the Viper 5-25x56. But, even the Crossfire II range is better than some much more expensive scopes!
How about the Vortex Legacy Series? High gloss black to add to your older blued classic rifles, something that goes with your beautiful wood stock blued steel rifle.

I find the 2x7 power scopes to be the best power range for medium game like deer and elk. 16x power is the most magnification for hunting conditions for small varmints like prairie dogs. Folks do not understand how much more refinement and optical qualities is needed for high scope magnification especially with all variables power scopes. That is why an inexpensive fixed 4x scope can equal the optical quality of a more expensive 3x9 variables.
I use the 4-12x 40 mm Diamondback on my deer rifle. It is a great scope and has never failed me in my 10 years of using it in the field.
I own 2 venom, an eagle, and a diamond back on various rifles. I am also a Iowa revolver hunter. Recommended me a vortex product for my 460 smith and wesson.
I really appreciate your guys take on hunting shots- 600 yards and in, would like to hear how much practice it takes to get confident at that range and how you did it. I think too many of us shoot out to 1-200 yards get some nice groupings and then extrapolate out to 3-500 yards with our ballistic charts and kestrels thinking they are a replacement for repetitions when they are really supplemental tools to fine tune our performance.
My 7mm08 for all other larger game!
I'm a big game hunter in Colorado and run a Vortex Strike Eagle 5-25x56. I don't mind the weight on my Bergara B-14 Crest as it helps tame the 7 PRC recoil. I want a balance of overall gun weight. Light enough to hike around, but heavy enough to shoot accurately. With the extra zoomies, I don't need to carry a spotting scope to identify if a bull is legal.

I bought the 3-18 Strike Eagle for exactly the reasons listed. A hybrid scope is exactly what it is, even if ir wasn't intended as such.
This question is for Ryan. I have numerous Diamondback 4x16x42 scopes and a few Diamondback 3x10x50. I hu t pretty much all open coutry in eastern Nebrasks. In your opinion, which one would you choose?? Also have Crossfires. In total, over 30 Vortex scopes and a couple Leupold. But I bounce around on scope power and objective bell size. What are your thoughts

Will we ever see something with lower magnification from the razor lht ffp??? Maybe a 2.5-12.5 or 3-15 or 3.5-18??? I know the reticle would need some tuning to optimize it for use at lower power, but my God that would be the ticket for me for a do all with primary focuses being split evenly between western predator-big game hunting and flat range combo gun.
Edit, I love in San Diego, our Mule deer are small but generally moderate ranges with our rolling hills, but Arizona Cous deer and northern California and Utah Idaho Colorado Oregon and even Texas and New Mexico are hunts I rotate through I have family in Wisconsin and also in Georgia and want to be able to use the same gun. Just one or maybe 2 rifles for all my predator through elk and bears. Like a 6.5 creed and a 7prc or ought 6 or 284ai or 6.8western.
2.5-12.5x sounds like a fantastic magnification range for many applications. Maybe a 46mm objective? And adjustable parallax please.
@@chipsterb4946 objective bell anywhere between 42-50 would be fine with me, more compact and mounted lower is a plus, but so is better low light performance, so that wouldn't be a deal breaker for me either way, but first focal plane medium power lightweight hunting tactical is something that doesn't really exist rn. Athlon Helos BTR gen II is the only thing in that realm, but it's over 25oz so not exactly lightweight, and I'm not in love with how fine the reticle is on the low end.

Love the scope but been looking for a lighter and more compact option as well as less magnification to take advantage of the lightweight and handiness of the rifle. I’ve been waiting on the new Eotech vudu x 2-12x40 but this new viper 2-10x42 has caught my eye. Love having options
Won't beat a Leupold vx3 2-7x32. Super light. Super clear, awesome reticles for hunting. Lifetime transferable warranty. Yea I'm a Leupold guy 💯
4-12 power is OK 4-16 is a sweet spot in power. 44 mm objective is OK. 50 mm is a good choice too. Anything beyond you need to know what you are up to and won't be asking for help.
I’ve personally struggled a bit with a big game hunting scope with a 4x bottom end (too high) and a 12x top end (also too high). 2-3x to 7-10x is more than enough for me, and I suspect it’s more than enough for a lot of other people too. 1” tube provides more than enough adjustment for a big game hunting scope also. I know, nobody asked :)

Been asking for a SFP with higher mag and objectives in the Razor LHT. The Viper 5x25x50 is a nice start. Still think there's a market for better glass and light weight in Razor line but excited to get my hands on the new Vipers!
I have an MRAD Razor LHT 3-15X50. I find choosing the perfect scope seems tougher than the perfect rifle. By that, I mean after hours of cartridge and rifle selection, figuring out which scope can be frustrating! In the past, I have chosen flat shooting cartridges, like the 300 RUM, and go with 300-yard Bull. Then knowing approximate holds at 400 and 500. I've decided to give smaller cartridges a whirl, and figure dial up if needed, might be a good idea? I purchased a Weatherby 307 Range in 7 PRC and a Savage Klym in 6.5 Prc. I want to be able to hunt deer, bear, elk, come what may, from black timber to big cuts. If I mount the MRAD LHT on the 7 PRC, which should I get/mount on the 6.5 PRC? The same 3-15X50 LHT, or the MOA 3-15X42 version? Would I be better served keeping both MIL, which, by the way, am liking MIL very much. On the other hand, the smaller objective scope might fit the lighter Savage Klym better? As a Newbie to dialing, I wonder if the 2 different systems might cause confusion in the field? Anyone?
In my personal opinion, the only reason to choose second focal plane over first is for cost. But I would rather just save a little longer and get FFP. But I also know that some people simply don't need it. It could be argued that no one does. It is a luxury. But worth it for me.

2-7x Crossfire 2 has been very pleasant on my 357x Henry.
I am still patiently waiting for a Viper PST Gen III 2-10 with an updated reticle and locking turrets.
So after months of agonising over scopes for my new Tikka T3X Hunter stainless in 30-06... Ive settled on the Strike Eagle 3-18. I've watched so many videos, especially yours. Please don't tell me I'm wrong in this video. I'm in Australia, hunt Western Queensland and Northern New South Wales. It's just for longer shots, mainly on pigs. I run around with two different 30-30s for anything inside 200... I'll probably use the Tikka for deer ar some point, maybe a Cape bull or a water buffalo, maybe. They might be anexcuse to get a 45-70. But please, God, I hope this doesn't tell me I'm wrong about the strike eagle😂
My whitetail rig for thick woods of NY is rem model 7 with a bosh and lomb 1.5x5x20 rifle and scope vintage 1980s it's about due for a new scope am going to look into the viper pst ..thanks 👍
I would LOVE for y'all to do an expanded talk on the Crossfire & Diamondback line. When I was younger and didn't have the financial freedom to spend more than $200 on an optic I was lost.
I bought cheap, no name garbage off Amazon because at least for $120 I could get a high magnification scope with all the bells and whistles right? It didn't take long to realize those scopes were complete garbage and I would've been better off with a Crossfire 2 with lower magnification and no features.
I still have my "entry level" Crossfire's and I still use them occasionally.......but once you've been spoiled by the Viper line it's hard to go back.
I do have a question on the scopes with the locking exposed elevation turrets. Can i still get a custom turret made for my gun and that scope that can still use the locking features?

I think the viper HS 2.5-10 would be a beautiful fit for that rifle. I love mine. I have a .270 with a Diamondback HP 3-12 on it and it works nice, but it’s not as pretty as I bet that browning is.
I'm sold on the Viper HD 2-10 and 3-15. I have rifles that I'd mount those on. I'm also very excited with and sold on the Strike Eagle 3-18×44 FFP, though I will have to purchase a new or new to me rifle and chambering. Also considering the weight of that 3-18. I'm not a competition shooter, only a hunter. Any ideas from anyone?
Inherited my dads late 60's early 70's Rem 700 in 270 with an old redfield illuminator 3x9 looking to put that scope on my 22 lr and put something more modern for shooting 400 yards and in at the high end realistic is 300 yards (for Elk sized and smaller) unless I shoot alot more perhaps. I just noticed that old redfield which was peak for it's time im struggling at dawn and dusk looking at deer in the woods with open lanes cut in them(identifying rack size not trying to shoot anything but a nice buck). at 140 yards and in some what. Crosshair is option is not much of a concern as I think a simple one with a proper sight in should be point and shoot out to the 300 mark roughly.

Ryan, Mark, can y'all simplify for anyone whose uncertain about how much magnification they want, at a given range?
Using the Viper examples... Using the 2-10 vs the 3-15 examples...
At max 10 power, do we simply divide the range by 10, for an estimate of what the field of view should approximate?
For magnification alone, before considering light quality, at range, etc...
So a 200 yard target, at 10 power magnification, would look similar to the target 20 yards away on 1 power (naked eye)
Whereas a 750 yard target, at 10 power, would look similar to 75 yards at 1 power...
But the 3-15, at 15 power magnification, would bring that image of the target 'visually closer', appearing as if it were only 50 yards, instead of 75...
Not accounting for light, parallax, ballistic trajectories and performance, any other variables,
Is that fairly accurate if oversimplified?

I would be interested in seeing a 10 minute talk on the Hornady Superformance line. I hunt with a Rem 700 Classic from 1988 chambered in 35 Whelen. I believe it has a 22 inch barrel and I’m wondering if there is an advantage to shooting superformance ammo? Are they able to produce faster speeds by using slower burning powder that peaks longer compared to Nosler, Remington, and Barnes?
I’m not sure what their recipe is, but they most definitely have an increase in velocity with no obvious increase in pressure. I chrono’d the 308 150 grain sst in my 16” sig cross and I was getting around 2730fps. Which to me, is screaming out of a 16” barrel and also isn’t bad when the box posted velocity is 3000fps which is most likely in a 24” test barrel

Aloha from the big Island. Love the podcast, i watched all the videos. love learning about everything. Im leomana native hawaiian from mauna kea marine veteran infantry with force recon. Part of the ocean clan and family. I just started hunting rifle, had a bow the last three years. i rock a strike eagle ontop of a remington 783. this isnt my choice set up. it was the only things left after the covid lockdowns in our small town shop. i told myself no weapons till 10 past of getting out. was stationed in falujah so i never wanted weapons after. anyway ten years past and i went in and that was available. Hawaii has shit gun laws and it affects the shops here and what we can buy and sell. i decided i would use my social platforms to help promote hunting and better a2 policies in hawaii. started shooting content every day and planning to call my channel kipu. I love the gear. all my glass is vortex. hoping one day to work with you guys and get a sponsorship or on the team some how. i was looking at the army new tech scope and i know forsure the sniper scopes interface and screen will be really amazing and im super interested in that. out side of that looking to upgrade my set up and was wondering if anyone is willing to trade a strike eagle for a more longr range hunting scope. these all have amazing lifetime warranty so you can always get a new one at trade in. if you ever in Hawaii lmk... aloha

I sell a lot of scopes. Mostly Vortex. Eye relief was mentioned. The entire Diamondback line, less one scope has terrible eye relief. The eye box in general isn't very forgiving.
The new Viper HD line is a huge improvement. What I call "Viper milk"(stray light) seems to be mostly gone. The 2.5-10 HS was always a home run.
The Venom line has taken over the budget friendly FFP from the DB line.
The Crossfire II line has the budget end squared away.
What I'm getting at is why. I can't speak for the rest of the world, but in my sample size, that whole lineup needs to go. Replace them with a couple of fixed power offerings, including a scout scope. PLEASE. I will sell the heck out of them.

Man, the new Viper HD series is almost too good to be true... I mean doesn't this threaten the Razor LHT? It's almost half the price, and what, weighs a couple ounces more? Comparing the two side-by-side, I would be hard pressed to spend the extra for seemingly very little gain. Very nice run down of the lineup. Thanks!

I wish more would make 4 power scopes. 3-12x44 would be great.
You know what matters to me? I need a scope I can drop on the ground, drop in the mud, drop in the snow, submerge in water, wack against a tree, and that can go from a 74F house to a 5F field and it just works. Because if I can trip, drop, walk into or otherwise stumble I will. Plus its gotta work beautifully at very first and very last light.
I'd like to see a video on scopes and mounting options on ARs for precision shooting, DMR, and hunting applications. Bur I'm an AR noob.
