- This is the ASICS Magic Speed 4. And this year, it’s adding FF Turbo racing foam to a full length carbon fiber plate and an FF Blast + carrier. But is that enough to stand out amongst the fierce competition in the tempo shoe category? It’s time to lace up the Magic Speed 4 and take it for a run.

The Asics lineup explanation at 7:16 is super useful, Asics lineup is quite confusing and Kofuzi has done an excellent job at explaining every major running shoe relative positioning.
I like the new section of where shoes fit in
Superblast 2 will be this years standout!
The FF turbo is softer and the removal of the FF blast (V1) as the carrier foam may compromise the ride. Danger is the “better” foam ironically compromises the ride….
Let’s see!
@@michaelgriffiths305it's replaced with blast eco not much of a difference.
As a bigger, taller friend, I appreciate you remembering us!
Saucony Speed 4 is still my favourite "do it all" shoe. Asics absolutely smashing it, though, some seriously good shoes. 👍
Much awaited review
thanks for your patience!
Great review! I like/appreciate the new wider shot with the ASICS range on the table in front of you. 👌 Really helped illustrate where the Magic Speed 4 fits in.
Others have said it, been waiting for this review ever since the teaser a couple of weeks ago! This sounds like my replacement for the endorphin speed 4 for faster workouts. Great review as always!
I really enjoy running in Magicspeed 3 and can't wait to get a pair of the fourth iteration to hit Indonesian market. Thanks for the most awaited review.
I naturally land in the forefoot and it is nice to not have to adjust how I run to hit the foam in the sweet spots. Can’t wait to try this shoe!
Was waiting for this review!
I’ve been waiting for you to do a review on this!! ❤🎉
Loved the lineup explanation
been waiting for this thanks
Nice seeing you repping my local shop 😊
Thanks! I was looking forward to seeing your take on this shoe. I want to give them a try after I run through my Endorphin Speed 4.
I've been waiting for this MS4, SL2 and DN3 from Kofuzi only, because whatever he says, it applies almost 100% to me. Maybe we're lightweight, same size 9, mid forefoot. Thanks Mike🎉
thanks for the vote of confidence!
I'd put NB SC Trainer in the category with those. I don't have it but think I'd like it the most of shoes of that sort.
I know l can go deeper into your videos then others... One of my favorite loops of all time!! CL Lake Loop! Brings back memories! Have to check out the shoe and a high tempo run at CL Lake Loop this summer!
Great review thanks!
Great videos you do from ireland 🇮🇪. Keep it up
Been waiting for this review!!!
thanks for waiting!
@@kofuzi always worth the wait🙏🏼
can’t wait for your Puma Deviate Nitro 3 review
That will be a blast!! Puma is doing an outstanding job
Need to retire my deviate nitro 2 soon😂
@@eric8188 me too
Great review, I was hoping for your info on the stability.
Feels like Asics is slowly starting to figure this shoe out, solidifying it's place in their lineup
I mean it is called "speed" so maybe they're going for a speed shoe
ASICS Magic Speed 4 imo have lost its identity. I have both 3 and 4 and the 3 is way better!
@@FlekaZzzbut magic speed 3 itself deviate from the 2nd generation. This one is actually getting closer to its real identity
@@oliversianturi1818 the 1 and 2 where quite bad. 3 hits the right spot for me atlest. With this 4 i would just pick up mye superblast insted.
I actually still have V1. Ran in it today. I think it's great even though a lot of people don't. V4 is a different kind of shoe and not really a replacement for V1-3.
So excited this review is out. I can't wait to use this as my half marathon shoe with my Novablast 4 and Nimbus 25 edit: That slow-mo cough is *cinema*
Thank you Mike.
They took the discount Takumi Sen and turned into discount Boston 12. For the short distance races Adidas got the Takumi Sen, Nike got the Streakfly, New Balance got the Pacer, Saucony got the Sinister but Asics have nothing to show for.
Metaspeed racer, Magic Speed tempo, Nimbus would make a nice rotation for higher mileage runners needing a max cushion easy day shoe. I’m currently rotating the nimbus 26, SC Trainer V2 & Endorphin Speed 4 for my fall marathon block.
Very good review
Great review! Surprised to hear the Saucony ES4 may be in your shoe of the year category. I’ve been hearing other mixed reviews, everyone is different.
Excellent shoe. It can do easy runs all the way to full marathons.
Wow think I'll stock up on the 3s. I really love that shoe for faster long runs and intervals.
I use the Magic Speed 3 as a training companion to the Takumi Sens
I have 2 pairs of magic speed3. I love that shoe and use it same as you. Definitely getting another 2-3more of the 3 especially when it will be discounted!
People are saving their coin for the superblast 2
Ko!
Usually follow everything you say on shoes. So thank you for being consistent in your reviews.
What do you think about a midyear rankings for various categories on shoes?
Great review!!! Do you think the upper reminds you of the saucony speed 1/2 haha?
Good job, Kofuzi. Here is my Like. Have a great day.
That loop shirt! 🔥🔥🔥
cant wait for the shoe to drop at the store
Thank you Kofuzi
Always the best reviewer. thanks Ko, will probably buy now
thanks for watching!
I’ve been loving the ASICS toe boxes lately does this feel as roomy as the novablast?
Love the shirt, Ko! 512 vibes 🦇
Excellent Review Mike! what do you mean by harder workout / non race day - does it include like fartlek / intervals where the magic speed comes in?
Bought a Magic Speed 1 for 35€ brand new and i like them. So, this 4 gen must be better 90%
Thanks for the review anyway 🙏🏻
great review as always Mike. Question for you how does this compare to something like the Takumi Sen - just in terms of a workout shoe - clearly the TS would be lighter (more racy) and the MS heavier - but some of the things you said here remind me of the review of the TS - in terms of a bit firmer and useful at up tempo but not as comfortable at slower speeds. Thanks.
If this is what they intend for up-tempo work, where will they place the Superblast 2. I hope they don’t slow it down or dull its speed potential. I love that the SB is comfortable at slower speeds and really great when you squeeze the gas.
I'm so confused. Could you also put the Magic Speed 4 in the slot between the Metaspeed and Novablast 4? Could you explain more about what separates the Magic Speed 4 from the Superblast?
Yes you could. Magic Speed is completely different foam from Superblast. It only has a tiny bit of the same foam as the Superblast. And the plate will make it feel much different.
I use the Endorphin speed 3 for my mile repeats. I am thinking of getting one more pair of these shoes while they are still available in my size.
Hey Ko :) when you talked about the Pumas, were you referring to the Elite version?
My feet now feel tight on 9.5us on the deviate nitro 2 but a 10us is a bit longer. My other shoes still fit as they were roomier than the dn2. might try this out to replace my dn2. My feet have "grown" ever since I started upping my mileage and running 6x in a week while weightlifting 4-5x.
nice one Kofuzi🇿🇦
Feels like the magic speed has gone closer to a do it all trainer with a muted plate, similar to the endorphin speed line. Stack and comfort seem to both have increased.
Another great video. How’s the plate design? Higher up like the Sky series or lower like the Edge series?
it's a bit more difficult to discern due to the FF Blast + foam, but the overall sensation to me is that it must be more akin to the Sky series, which is why I describe the Magic Speed 2 and 3 as Edge training companions and the Magic Speed 4 as a training companion for Sky runners
Cant wait for the release of DN3 and SC Trainer V3 😁 Its great that a lot of choices are coming out. It would just go down to personal preferences. Thanks again!
Would have been more helpful if the review had compared this with Adidas Boston 12. It’s everywhere!
Everywhere?
B12 is quite a shoe! Love mine
I don't come close to doing enough serious training to justify a new tempo shoe but constantly impressed with ASICS at the moment. Do you do all your high speed work in plated shoes?
Great review! I’ve used the magic speed 3’s and Hyperspeeds for faster workouts but not really for longer runs. I’m curious to try something fast with more stack height. I have a $200 gift card to spend so now to decide 😊
what about sizing? Do you wear the same size as the novablast?
Would you say this a budget race day shoe? Can it handle a half or full distance for those looking at PB and not a podium?
God knows I love Asics, excellent review.
Would you recommend this (and/or the Nitro and Speed) for track workouts?
For me magic speed 4 is for daily trainer for faster runner (pace 3 to 5) than average. Might as well replace NB4 in your rotation.
So magic speed/Metaspeed Paris series or Superblast 2/Metaspeed Paris Series if you chose only 2 for marathon/half training and racing?
nicely explained..sub!!!!
thanks for watching!
How was it compared to the old Nike Zoom Fly 5?
Hi Kofuzi! I only average sub 5:30, can I use this for a full marathon just like I've opted previously for the Superblast & Deviate Nitro 2?
I started racing a few months ago. In April, I ran my first half marathon in 2:16, and in May, I ran my second half marathon in under 2 hours. I've been training and running in the Novablast 4. Now that I'm preparing for my next half marathon in August, I'm looking to buy a new pair of shoes. Considering I'm still building up my speed, should I go for the Magic Speed or the MetaSpeed?
I've magic speed 3. Cushion comfort, but speed
When magic speed 4 release, more bulky in foam looks like
hi kofuzi. I normally just do repeated sprints (top speed around 200m max). The nearest track is too far away so i cant really wear track spikes when i sprint on cement. Currently using superblast (no plate and bulky but it is faster than my previous pegasus) but thinking i might need something faster. Would you recommend the magicspeed 4 or deviate nitro 2? Or should i just go all out with a metaspeed sky instead?
Can you say that this is just a plated Superblast? Excited to try this one. 😊
No it's not.
The Superblast is much bulkier or “chonky” as we sometimes call such shoes.
As someone who really liked the lower stack height of the Magic Speed 3 I'm very curious to give this new update a try. Going to be a tough call to find out what my new tempo shoe will be as a I also really like the Endorphin Speed 3 and can't wait to try the new Endorphin Speed 4.
Also, which white Ascics singlet did you wear in this video? Looks really nice and most of all comfortable and breathable.
Probably, you will be able to buy Magic Speed 3 cheaper if you liked it. Another alternative is PUMA Deviate Nitro 2. You might also want to look at TYR Valkrie Speedworks. They seem to have started with Endorphin Speed 2 but with slightly lower drop.
Gonna do my first HM in july and dont know what shoe to get tryna get a sub 2 hour HM, currently using the superblast for daily training. Reckon the magic speed can be used as a race shoe for HM or just go for the paris sky?
My race speeds are 7:45 to 7:15 , is this a good shoe for me? I Currently use Saucony endorphin speed 4
Curious how this compares to the S4. I happened to pick one up in my trip to Japan last year and it seems like there are similarities. It’s pretty firm as well but this has a lot more stack height. If I’m going slower it feels too firm.
I have the s4 and magic speed 3. S4 is firmer, I think, because of the full layer turbo foam combo. If they did the same for the speed4, it would not sell, I think. The speed 4 has a puck of turbo cover with ffblast which is softer. I think if they change the plate material or thickness of turbo it will be better for the s4.
Maybe a little bit of v1 with its rolling over the forefoot.? V1 fit more with edge than with the Sky.
Still waiting on your SL2 review video even though I already got one
Two questions come to my mind: could slower runners use it for 10k racing and how does it compare to the Adidas takumi sen?
Any idea if the firmness is similar to the Noosa Tri 15's?
With ASICS moving to FF Turbo+ in the Metaspeed series and apparently in the upcoming Superblast 2, I was really hoping they’d release a Magic Speed 4 with full FF Turbo and a plate, similar to the S4 they have in Japan. I feel like that’s a missed opportunity here and I don’t understand why they only did a puck of Turbo in the forefoot.
Probably because many people become forefoot strikers when they step on the gas even if they ordinarily aren't.
I think there's a lot of unpack in this comment, but I think the thing I'd recommend for you is to try the Magic Speed 4. It might be exactly what you're looking for.
(and if it's not, you'll know instantly)
Less turbo probably link to cost? S4 has a higher price than magic speed. S4 is firm (turbo+plate) but I think magic speed 4 is softer because of the thick layer of material.
@@laalaa99stlWas thinking that as well.
Could I use this shoes in a Marathon race? I have the metaspeed sky+, but I feel that's not the adequate shoes for a Marathon.
Wider more foam heavier appealing to a broader cohort of consumers. May appeal to bigger runners over the V2-3
Nice! How's the fit in these? and compared to the Metaspeed Edge?
The Edge is really a race shoe and this is more of daily trainer though that's not to say you couldn’t use it as a race shoe.
Could you race the full marathon distance in it? I know it isn’t a racing shoe; but as a definitely not fast guy I feel okay with racing in super trainers. So I bought the Speed 4 for races, and I wonder if this would be a good comparison to it.
You can race in any shoe that provides you enough cushion and comfort for your needs as well as the propulsion or response for your goal time.
Any news on the superblast 2 release date?
I hope it doesn’t get nerfed.
@@jesustsa1 so hope it doesnt get Niked
6th July release
Labeling wise I think it's like this: the shoe is a Magic Speed so we know that those have FF Blast+ foam in them. Plus the FF Turbo wording is written in the orange slash. So then it implies that the midsole is FF Blast+ with FF Turbo where the slash is. Anyone else interpret it like that?
Is it firmer than Saucony Kinvara pro? It’s obviously much lighter
I am looking for a long run shoe that can handle intervals. Right now i have the boston 12, which i love the forefoot feeling but the heel is too harsh. The Speed 4 i love the softer heel But the forefoot lacks the cushion and pop of the boston12. Magicspeed 4 seems not as soft as the speed 4. Sounds like i need to give the puma deviate nitro a try.
Magic speed 4 vs endorphin speed 4 for the marathon? I’ve been having calf issues with carbon plated shoes for the marathon distance. I’m thinking a slightly less rigid shoe will help reduce the load for the calf musculature
I discuss these two shoes specifically towards the end of the video.
I think there are a lot of assumptions built in to your question that I'm not sure I agree with or that I feel need a lot of elaboration, but I'm not sure I need to do all that to answer your question. so I will try to answer your question the best I can.
I think you are asking which shoe is less rigid.
if you are looking for the less rigid option, that would be the endorphin speed 4.
.
please consider that I am not a medical professional. depending on the nature and degree of your calf issues, you may want to consult the advice of someone who has the medical expertise to provide recommendations to help address the source of your calf issues as well as the symptoms of your calf issues
@@kofuzi thanks for the detailed response. It was a loaded question. (Sorry about that) I work in PT, and the calf issues can be multifactorial: Strength, nutrition, training, shoes, etc.
Personally, I’m leaning towards going with a “super trainer” for my next marathon as I believe the stiffness of the carbon plated shoes have been contributing to calf cramps.
A better version of my question would be: Do you think the ES4 and the magic speed 4 could handle the distance at a MP of 6:45-7 min pace.
I’ve done long runs in the ES3 and the shoes feels a little sloppy for a 20 mile run.
Thanks again Kofuzi.
Reminiscent of the Asics S4
Bigger wanting firmer??? First time I am really scratching my head on your insights.
So is the compliment or the pairing Magic Speed/Metaspeed Sky/Edge Paris or Superblast 2/Metaspeed Sky/Edge Paris? I do know Superblast not carbon.
Novablast 4/Magic Speed 4/Edge Paris will be my rotation.
@@Fozzee.1970 yes I forgot to add if only two shoes are picked originally and than edited my original comment thinking I edited it but looks like there are two - thanks!
good looking shoes... especially compared to the toy looking ES4
Would the Takumi Sen 10 be an alternative?
it could be, but I don't like running any easy miles in the Takumi. I use it as a workout-only shoe (and also for 5k/10k racing)
Seconding that response from Ko, I reserve my Takumi Sen for shorter race distances. If I weren’t trying to preserve them for that I’d use them for speed workouts too.
IMO, keep it simple and just get the superblast and use it for everything but races
Asics Tartheredge RP3!
For a refreshing change!
How this one compares to Asics S4 ?
Looks like a New Balance SC trainer
very very different
Let’s go Steve Aoki!
I still have my MS2s hahah, thing is a tank and has around 300 miles on it
What’s the difference between this and meta speed sky Paris?
one is a race shoe and one is a training companion to the race shoe. see the chapter on ASICS lineup blast family starting at 7:14. I discuss this specifically
@@kofuzi I’ll have a look, thanks for the quick response.
So it’s kinda like what the deviate nitro 2 is to the deviate nitro elite 2?
@@kofuzi also, do you think it could be used as an up tempo daily trainer, similar to the DN2 or ES4?
Really don't understand the full length carbon in companion shoes like this, especially from Asics. Their Magic Speed models are so stiff!
