I mean, sometimes people do talk regardless and that can't always be helped. When I was in college I was a member of a club that was about Korean Culture and sharing it among non-Koreans and Koreans and I had just joined the club. At the end of the semester all the E-board were graduating and if no one chose to be executives the club was going to die. I had a lot of new friends and I studied Criminology, a branch of sociology. I've always been a big fan of just learning about cultures in general (I had interest in Japan, Italy, Greek and various Balkan groups) and had joined the club to learn about Korea beyond the stereotypes in Kpop. And so the club was going to die and I got nominated to be an executive. And none of the E-board from that point had been Korean and from that point all the Korean members left and formed their own club because they were upset that "Koreaboos" would now be leading the club. Now for reference, one of our execs was a friend of a past exec and literally wasn't even interested in Korea as much as she was in Latin America; she just didn't want the club to die because her friend who was graduating was distraught, as were members of the club. For the next two years the E-board (myself included) were called Koreaboos, given dirty looks by the six-members who formed an all Korean unofficial club not regulated by the school. We were berated behind our backs because they only saw us as Kpop wannabees. Now, I like Kpop but it's not everything I listen to or even the majority of what I listen to. I just wanted to learn about Korean outside of Kpop and didn't want the club where I could get unbiased information firsthand from dying. I'm Latina and that's the only culture I will ever claim. I only claim Puerto Rican and Cuban, because that's what I am and what I can say I've experienced. Japan, Italy and the other cultures I learned about are cool and beautiful but I would never try and claim something I'm not (nor would I claim to ever be the expert; I've been studying a branch of sociology and also taken interest in cultural anthropology, as the Natives to my islands have more Eastern cultures and the Spaniards and Africans are Western) we were berated, ostracized and they would even sabotage our events and meetings where we would have actual Koreans who were our friends host so as to not be misinformed and so as to not have everything catered to the members who are Koreaboos becuause our e-board were mostly from groups who are also having their cultures fetishized. This went on for two years despite us trying to get people away from just fetishizing Korean culture and it didn't let up despite this. I've had friends from other clubs who were Korean and visted our office to hang out say that the other group was saying we were just Koreaboos and convincing Koreans not to join our club and she went to one of our meetings and was shocked when, instead of talking about Kpop or Kdramas we were talking about schooling, beauty standards, social issues (Criminal Justice school btw) and non-Kpop things which were hosted and fact checked by our friends and one exec who were born and raised in Korea. And she apologized for going off the assumptions of the other unofficial club. Tldr; People probably might talk regardless especially when they don't know you and like that's on them.

Since the foreigners are not well aware of this they don't put Indians in the race. So basically when someone talks about asian they refers to the race not the geographical one

I don't think it's okay to deny your own culture and lie to your friends but I actually see a lot of people overreacting on that koreaboo topic. Like they already call you a koreaboo just because you're trying to learn korean which obviously isn't a bad thing. okay so I feel like when it comes to calling someone a "Korea boo" there's a bit of Grey area so I wanted to say a few things ( in my opinion) that DONT make you a Korea boo and things that do. things that DONT make you a Korea boo: liking kpop, korean clothing trends, k dramas, k beauty etc. AS WELL AS actually taking the time to learn the language. (not just oppa or unnie or little slang words). things that DO make you a koreaboo(again in my opinion): denouncing your own culture (for example the thai/viet girl mentioned in the video) only taking things on the surface (ex. aegyo,) and calling it "learning korean" and when you try to LOOK korean when you are simply not. and there's nothing wrong with that. all in all all cultures are beautiful and unique no culture is above or below another, you are allowed to like what you like. I'm a half Korean half aussie girl and I felt the pressure to stay at 54 kg at 168cm (14 yrs old at this time) and I passed out at one of my swimming carnivals (after a heckin 200m freestyle) due to low blood sugars. I vomited and stuff and felt super light headed( before i passed out). They ( lifeguard) took me to the first aid room and told me to drink a Gatorade and I refused to drink it and he dead ass scared me into drinking the Gatorade (drink the Gatorade or you're going to the hosptial), they constantly did blood pressure tests and yeah. My moms dad is Japanese. My grandma went to Japan for traveling when they met. My grandma was very interested in asian culture so she traveled in Asia. She met my grandpa there. My mom is half Japanese but she looks more white than asian. But you can see my moms sister is asian. So my mom had me with a mixed man of darker and lighter skin color and had me. So I don’t count myself as asian. I am white. Even tho I’m 25% asian and 25% black. I don’t call myself asian or black because I don’t look like it. I look white so I say white but I am very proud of my asian and African roots! (I live in South Africa)

I had a mild case of Koreaboo syndrome as a teen when I first discovered Kpop. I used to make the fanfics on Wattpad then upload or take Kpop quizzes on Quotev or Quizzazz. I did want to look more Korean (although I didn’t try) and I wanted to learn the language so I could hopefully blend in with the Korean society when I eventually moved there (that was the plan when I was a kid). I just wanted to be accepted if I went there because I knew Korea was not a melting pot of cultures and nationalities like my home country is. Now I look back and cringe because I wouldn’t dare denounce my heritage as a wiser adult. The guy getting plastic surgery to change his eyes is definitely an extreme case of Koreaboo, in my opinion. To alter your identity just to personify a nationality that you weren’t even born into? Now that’s wild! Thanks for the vid!

I really don’t understand koreaboos. Like I love K-Pop/K-dramas and the culture seems fun, plus the food looks delicious but I also love my own ethnicity and culture and I won’t ever change that or myself to something that I’m not.

Every country has a beautiful culture why do people want to skip their own culture and become someone who they are not naturally I think they are mad and actually they need some life and air to survive they need to accept who they are and stop fantasizing unrealistic things.

But yeah some part of Indian people are influenced by western culture as well. Like clothes and food. I don't think it's okay to deny your own culture and lie to your friends but I actually see a lot of people overreacting on that koreaboo topic. Like they already call you a koreaboo just because you're trying to learn korean which obviously isn't a bad thing. okay so I feel like when it comes to calling someone a "Korea boo" there's a bit of Grey area so I wanted to say a few things ( in my opinion) that DONT make you a Korea boo and things that do.
things that DONT make you a Korea boo:
liking kpop, korean clothing trends, k dramas, k beauty etc. AS WELL AS actually taking the time to learn the language. (not just oppa or unnie or little slang words).
things that DO make you a koreaboo(again in my opinion):
denouncing your own culture (for example the thai/viet girl mentioned in the video) only taking things on the surface (ex. aegyo,) and calling it "learning korean" and when you try to LOOK korean when you are simply not. and there's nothing wrong with that.
all in all all cultures are beautiful and unique no culture is above or below another, you are allowed to like what you like. And being into kpop or k culture in general is great and it has so much of an opportunity to have so many OTHER cultures influence in the best way possible. thank you for coming to my Ted talk 💗💗💗😂

I'm a half Korean half aussie girl and I felt the pressure to stay at 54 kg at 168cm (14 yrs old at this time) and I passed out at one of my swimming carnivals (after a heckin 200m freestyle) due to low blood sugars. I vomited and stuff and felt super light headed( before i passed out). They ( lifeguard) took me to the first aid room and told me to drink a Gatorade and I refused to drink it and he dead ass scared me into drinking the Gatorade (drink the Gatorade or you're going to the hosptial), they constantly did blood pressure tests and yeah. My moms dad is Japanese. My grandma went to Japan for traveling when they met. My grandma was very interested in asian culture so she traveled in Asia. She met my grandpa there. My mom is half Japanese but she looks more white than asian. But you can see my moms sister is asian. So my mom had me with a mixed man of darker and lighter skin color and had me. So I don’t count myself as asian. I am white. Even tho I’m 25% asian and 25% black. I don’t call myself asian or black because I don’t look like it. I look white so I say white but I am very proud of my asian and African roots! (I live in South Africa)

I had a mild case of Koreaboo syndrome as a teen when I first discovered Kpop. I used to make the fanfics on Wattpad then upload or take Kpop quizzes on Quotev or Quizzazz. I did want to look more Korean (although I didn’t try) and I wanted to learn the language so I could hopefully blend in with the Korean society when I eventually moved there (that was the plan when I was a kid). I just wanted to be accepted if I went there because I knew Korea was not a melting pot of cultures and nationalities like my home country is. Now I look back and cringe because I wouldn’t dare denounce my heritage as a wiser adult. The guy getting plastic surgery to change his eyes is definitely an extreme case of Koreaboo, in my opinion. To alter your identity just to personify a nationality that you weren’t even born into? Now that’s wild! Thanks for the vid!

Well I know it’s super late but here’s my story, so there was this girl in this class that loved Red Velvet and started to “speak Korean” to me and said you like Kpop so I’ll teach you Korean, I already knew Korean at that time so I wanted to know if she actually knew too, BUT the next day she started saying things that weren’t Korean, just gibberish 😂😂😂 and she tried to teach me how to do aigoo or whatever it’s called, and she also told me to call her unnie what’s worse is that she started doing aigoo to a bunch of our schoolmates 🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️

I like Koreans in general and love everything about Korean culture from food to language. Whenever I meet Korean people and they figure out that I am learning Korean and I say something they say I have a perfect accent. I as a joke use Unnie and Oops, or for my bf I say oops sometimes cause he's Korean and I do it for fun. But I know I'm not Asian, lol
