    “I would rather eat healthy than have dessert.”
    vs.
    “I would rather eat healthy, then have dessert.”
    Both are sensible, but their meanings are noticeably different.

Good on you! Considering that you started from nothing (e.g. printed piano) , you are phenomenal. You really have the stamina to be a successful person! The 'than' and 'then' confusion really got underway after the internet came into being and people got lazy in their public spelling. Before that you rarely noticed such a thing. Then it started creeping backwards into speech.

    • @Spudinja
      @Spudinja 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In American English, "then" and "than" are pronounced differently in isolation, but are often reduced to homophones in natural speech. It's easy for speakers of American English to mix them up in writing when they're not paying attention, I'd wager that plays a big role.

    The which/that explanation is... "kind of" wrong.
    Commas make the difference! In the example sentences, 'which' is used with commas, while 'that' is not.
    When 'which' is used without the commas, it can function the same way as 'that.'
    + I'm a big fan of you Marina. Don't get me wrong. As an English teacher, I just had to point this out. Love your videos!

    Congrats, new apartment looks fresh, and great job with these videos. I stumbled on your videos while beginning to study German. Funny how you often learn and recognize so much more about your mother tongue.
    One minor note regarding the use of "i.e. versus "e.g." I believe the issue among natives here is really more about meaning confusion than the a distinction between informal and formal , as speakers generally mix up "that is" and "for example" when using these handy Latin abbreviations. You should be aware that it is perfectly acceptable to use these formally. In fact, I think I've seen the language evolve where people are using "i.e." and/or "e.g." in speech, which is informally and less common (if common at all) in the past. A correct but funny example, (in the voice of a valley girl): "I, like, was totally like, no way!! Like "i.e." I'm not stupid."
    Separately, I have some more common errors I think might be worth being aware of :). One thing that might be interesting for you to do sometime, is hone in on mistakes that are common to specific non-anglophonic mother tongues. I'm sure there's gotta be some trends. Anywhere, here are a couple I thought of off the top of my head.
    1. Mixing up the order of "I" and "me." This is particularly common in photos (ever see a caption that reads "Mom and I" - totally wrong). A good test is to see if the pronoun "I" or "me" stands alone in the same sentence (e.g. A picture of "I" doesn't make sense, but a picture of "me" does).
    2. The use of the non-word "irregardless." Remember, "regardless" already indicates without regard, and doubling it up doesn't emphasize that - lol.
    3. Overuse of the word "like," although I think this has been dying off a little. Who knows, anecdotal...
    4. You don't take something "personal," you take something "personally."
    Keep up the good work.

    Hey Marina. Thank you for the video. Even though I speak fluent English, I still have some mistakes in these languages. And we also learn although we think we are “perfect”. Nobody ever reaches perfection in a language. What you reach is fluency, not perfection. We are not even perfect in our native languages, which is so funny. So, whenever I listen to someone say “I speak perfect English”. No way! But it’s ok. Anyway, I’ve never wrote you any comment in any video, Marina. And I love them. I’m a good fan of yours. :) Thank you once again for the videos. Спасибо дорогая Марина. Я - твой фанат и мне нравится твои видеос. У тебя видеос на русском? So I'm a native English speaker and enjoy watching videos like this one to be able to better help my foreign friends learning our language. This was a very good video covering important content, but I have one minor issue; why do you say that the abbreviations i.e. and e.g. can only be used informally?
    I mean, I haven't really considered the topic before, but to my mind e.g. and i.e. are actually much closer to formal language than informal. They would not look out of place at all on a resume or official document. I could be wrong, but that's my view anyway. Anyone willing to shed some light?

    • @nelson-al4663
      @nelson-al4663 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Same here. I thought e.g and i.e. were used in a formal way because they are Latin expressions indeed.

    • @coachshawnmichael
      @coachshawnmichael 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I believe many native speakers are not clear on these two abbreviations and I think Marina is correct when she says that they should not be used on a very formal document and it will possibly give a lower score if included on a T.O.E.F.L. essay.
      The Gregg Reference Manual, suggests:
      “Use the abbreviated forms e.g. and i.e. only in informal, technical, or ‘expedient’ documents (such as business forms, catalogs, and routine e-mail messages, memos, and letters between business offices).”
