I think "teachers" is a wring term for them. They teach, but there is a big difference between a teacher and someone who wants to teach sometime to others without a degree. Or experiences teaching in schools or colleges.

I have never been in English speaking country but I always talk with native speakers to test my English understanding. When I realize that I don't understand them % 100 percent I focus on listening different accents , different speeds , I listen again and again.
Even I just improved my listening skill not only in English, also whatever I hear it I directly never forget ever. Like for once I joined a Russian class as a host student with my friend, all students were struggling remembering words but I was answering before them while it was their 3rd time in Thé class.

I identify with Marina's account : I moved to Canada when I was 36 years old. I was able to speak some English when I first set foot in Montreal yet it's definitely a plus when one is surrounded by English speakers.
And yeah - there's the fact that Montreal is actually a bilingual city : I did have to learn French as well (as if mastering English was not enough).
    Kudos to you both.

Talking to native speakers works actually pretty cool! I remember taking up english about 4 years ago but when I headed off to America someone asked me something and I was like I don’t get this and I was gonna give up. However from now on I started talking to Americans especially white people because I think they speak way better. Since I did this I took away my accent and I began having American accent. Nowadays I talk to tons of American guys because I’m 19 and I like talking and partying with them a lot and they always say dude I thought you were American you don’t even have Mexican accent. But that’s because I always use tons of slang and idioms. Plus my teacher is American so he has taught me how to talk like a native speaker. I’m really looking forward to being exchange student in an American college.

What a motivating example! I totally agree that things get much easier when you master a language and you need that to succeed. My experience is that the continuous effort is what counts.
The point that I would like to address on Marina's talk is that she experienced a strong progress while travelling abroad for weeks and not months. The quality of the experience counts much more than the long it takes. My wife lived in California for one year, from 2015 to 2016. I had the opportunity to go there for five times, for a couple of weeks each time. It is a short experience, but it was a period of time that I experienced a big progress in comprehension and accent improvement mostly. The trick? No trick. I got involved to the maximum extent to American Life, interacted as much as I could: Had my cell phone repaired, while talked to the man of the store about his business, gave hints to my wife's landlady on her orchyd cultivation, calculated her energy balance and discussed about politics, had the computer repaired by phone assistance, discussed pros/cons of my current cell plans with carrier store staff many times, and an endless list of various subjects and conversations . If course one should have to start from a certain level to benefit, but yes, this interaction is what makes the difference.
Reading something everyday and having a vocabulary list right on the cell phone is also a tool for progress. It has a 'news feed' that brings you reports based on your interests and it comes in the language your cell phone is set to, so I text less and read and search for words more.
The other point is about a 'propper age to learn'. No doubt fresh memory is favorable for learning, but the learning process is also a function of the belief of the capacity that one has, fueled by motivation

    • @TheEnglishCoach
      @TheEnglishCoach  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey, I loved your FAQs.
And by the way, to all those who think that you speak too fast, there's the settings button where one can click and slow down the video's speed.
Me, I would suggest viewers to actually speed up the video (set speed to 1.25 or even 1.50). That helps a lot when it comes to listening practice. Not there yet? Need to slow it down a bit? No problem yet just keep it in mind as a personal goal.
Setting personal goals can be really helpful.

I learned something new from your video and I think learn some languages will make me get more friends, get more opportunities, and even get a lot of families if I able to speak in some languages. Actually Indonesian is my 1st, English is 2nd ,and Arabic is 3rd. But I need to change English as my 1st language start from today 🙏🇺🇸✊.
    Anyway, Terima kasih/ Thanks a lot/ شكراً جزيلا for the video 🇺🇸🙏✈✊

That's interesting that how passionate Marina has been thorough these years about learning language. When I was a child my goal was to watch undubbed English movies without subtitles but that goal wasn't big enough! because I still have struggle with speaking fluently.
I think so few people have the fortune and money to visit English speaking countries while studying English. So there must be some strategies to cover that up, which Stephanie has shared them in earlier videos. THUMBS UP ;)
But to be honest I find it difficult to speak with people on Apps. First, It's hard to find someone that would share the same interests with me. Secondly, I usually get off topic when I literally reach the threshold of my English vocabulary and start to repeat my sentences. That happens exactly at the same time that my heart beat rises, my mouth dries and all of sudden I start to judge myself and you know start stuttering. And Guess what, the guy says maybe some other time we will share more, I should go!!! :\
