Thanks for the reply, I followed the videos and I got through, no leaks, no check engine light and runs beautiful. Thanks again for taking time in doing this videos, beacuse the fix its veeeeeerryyy time consuming and have to pay attention to all the small details.
Brother its 11 pm here in Cali. I couldnt get the timing chain off my Infinity G35. I thought I removed all the bolts. It just wouldnt come off. I decided to go check out a video and BAM the two bolts in the oil pan. Thanks a million going back downstairs with a new attitude!!!!!
Thanx for this video man... I will soon be changing my timing chain just hope it's not my engine that's messed up, I don't wanna do all that work for nothing
Great video. I think its the longest. I wish you would have videoed how you put the timing chain on and the sprokets. Also, glad you admitted to cracking the case. Many people would have omitted that. We can prevent that from happening to us. Thanks for making the video.
I thought you were going to show the part that I needed to see was taking that motor mount out unfortunately I've done it more than once on my car and I can't remember how to get those stupidOut and of course you skip that part LOL
You're not following the directions in the manual and you are not familiar with the car either..... There is very clear, precise timing instruction in the manual that if followed eliminates any doubt about the proper timing. Also, when the manual tells you to remove the lower & upper oil pan, remove them! You certainly don't know better than the people who designed that whole engine! Overall, was a helpful video! Thanks!
I have a 2004 Nissan Maxima SE 3.5 V6 it keeps running hot I replaced the thermostat and I need to replace the antifreeze reservoir hose....as soon as I fill it, the coolant drips right out. It doesn't pour out though..can you do a video for this? The leak is behind the passenger wheel and it's a hard hose.
All your videos are awesome!!! And thanks for taking your time for do this videos, I have a ?, Did you remove the valve covers to remove/ tightnen the the sprockers or you use air? i dont want to bend my valves.
I don't have my own shop, but I am a shop foreman. That's an interesting question that could be talked about for hours. In my experience it seems that engineers don't have really have to work on the products they build in an everyday setting, so they don't focus on the repairs side of what they are building. They do have to design a product to me certain needs and I'm sure that is a difficult job in itself. But it sure would be nice if they thought about the people that have to fix them.
Best video out there! I learned so much from this video! I'm just wondering why you didn't use your impact on the crank case bolt? Your video is so good that I keep watching it over and over again. Thanks for the video! I know as a professional video person how hard it is to make an instructional video! Using a head mounted video cam will really make it easy. Also using a headlight will help. Just trying to help! You did a fantastic job on this video!!!
I keep saying this over and over to Nissan owners with the 3.5 engine...STOP KILLING YOUR ENGINES WITH CONVENTIONAL, GROUP 3 (Valvoline syn, castrol, pennzoil etc) AND GROUP 4 (Amsoil, Mobil 1, Royal Purple) ENGINE OILS. The VQ engines produce high forces and loads internally and breaks down these oils very quickly. If you use a GROUP 5 POLYOLESTER ENGINE OIL (Redline 10w40) WITH A QUALITY HIGH FLOW OIL FILTER WITH ADBV (Fram Ultra synthetic, Wix, Amsoil, RP), you'll NEVER get this timing chain/guide/tensioner problem ever for the life of the engine. Polyolester oil is the best type of oil you'll you'll ever use because it protects down to the molecular level on any material (plastic, steel, alloy etc), something that other oils don't do. . My 2004 Maxima has over 290,000 miles and STILL has all it's factory original timing chain parts because I always use the ester oil. It starts and runs smoother than butter and very quiet just as day one and pulls like a bat out of hell, and it's heading close to 300,000 miles.
The 5.5 gen Maxima(the 02, the first year of the VQ35DE) there was a problem with the time chain tensioners, and I believe ran all the way up to the 2008 or 9. Specifically the plastic tensioner guide shoes(Nissan has a TSB out on this which also effects the VQ40 engine as well). I've seen people use every type of motor oil imaginable and it still makes the noise, its just a bad tensioner guide. I'm sure using a better oil helps, but a faulty part is a faulty part. And these motors burn oil, I've owned 5 Maximas, a 97, 2000, 2002 and two 2003's, all bought used, but all burnt some level of oil all made the noise at some level. This of course does not help the engine noise as my girlfriend found out the hard way that when the car starts to tick, it needs some oil, lol.
Bob Bigglesworth Read my comment above again..I've tested the Polyol ester oil in my Maxima since I had it new under 10,000 miles. It now has 298,000 miles(
Very true, but on the flip side of that coin, just because it worked on 2 cars, doesnt mean it works on every car. And if people have to use a special kind if motor oil for a piece not to break. I'd say thats a problem.
And not for nothing, but the service manual for my car says "Nissan recommends the use of low friction oil in order to improve fuel economy and conserve enegry. Only those engine oils with the American Petroleum Institute (API) certification mark on the front of the container should be used.". No where in the service manual does it mention group 5 ester oil. Now, not that i dont agree with you, its always better to use better oil. But what i'm saying is if you dont know much about cars, and you went out and bought a new 2003 maxima, and looked in the service manual to see what to use. You would more than likely buy something other than Group 5 ester oil.
It wasn't until 2009 that Nissan started recommending "Nissan ester engine oil" in the cars. It was the first year it was in the service manual. The VQ35DE was first used in 2002. So for 7 years the engine was in production, people were just shit outta luck?
Check out my Video's I have one in there on timing this engine. Haven't watched it in awhile, so I'm not sure how much detail I went into. Hopefully there is enough info to get you squared away.
Can i get some help? My DOHC on left bank jumped 3-4 teath. i have my chain off, Im trying to put the cam lobes to there respective marks...the crank was fine, the right lobs were fine but the left lobes wont align. Every time i try to turn it to alignment, it pulls one way or the other...i even tried back the crank off in case i'm hitting valves and cylinders. any ideas???
Hi!, this is a comment and asking advice, I just did the timing chain job, because my Altima 3.5 developed a horrible noise, and was 200,000 miles, not sure how was the maintenance in the first 80,000 miles, anyway , after replace the timing chain, tensor, etc, the noise still there!, now is a tapping, I already checked the compression and is 185 in all cylinders, At idle the cars seems fine, not really noisy, but after 2000 rpm, the tapping is really loud, no smoke , do you think I have to do the head job?and great videos man! You really help me a lot, thank you!, and I hope heard from you.
Hi I am preparing to do this job and I know you mentioned upgraded chains and guides could you tell me what brand you used? Nissan wants over a $1000.00 for the parts. I found a set on ebay for 250.00 but they won't grantee the chains or guides,
Phil, this is from my phone so I hope you get this. I would definitely get the parts from Nissan! I know it's expensive, but after you do it you will understand why you don't want to go back in there! It's not a pleasant job and if I have to do another one I'll probably pull the engine. If you get the aftermarket parts and they fail, you have no warranty and will have to do it all over again. In my opinion it's just not worth it. HTH
Sorry it's been awhile, but hopefully this will get to you in time. I pretty sure you can get it out from the top. I'm almost certain that's the way I would have taken it out. Just go slow and if you can have a couple other people there to keep an eye on things while your pulling it out, it would probably help. I removed the hood while working on this one also, so don't be afraid to remove it if you need the room. They are pretty easy to get off/on and not to bad to line back up. Maybe trace around the bolts with a little paint or white out so when you go back on with it, you will know where to line it back up. HTH
Izzy, you can purchase a subscription from alldata for just a single make and model. Google alldata DIY and you should get their site for individuals that you can get just the info for the car you are interested in working on and not have to spend the money for their full subscription. That would be your best bet. HTH
u said u have a shop so im guessing your an experienced mechanic. Having seen lots of cars why do u think the Japanese choose to do certain things differently in their cars? Some things are just a pain in the neck.. it this just to be different or are their specific reasons why?
Hey dude you wanna date my sister for awhile? I need this shit done on my Maxima - it's annoying the fuck out of me... So if you did this again would you pull the engine? Thank you so much for the video - i'm sure it will save a life or two!!!

Travis, those pages were either from alldata or Mitchell. Can't remember which one I used.
thank you so much for the effort to record this!
Awesome! I'm glad they helped you. This is exactly why I do them.

Thanks! I think I used air. It's been a while since I did this one. But the correct way to do it would be to remove the valve covers and hold the cam.
I did this and got it all back together without touching chain yet my car is out of timing! Do you have a video setting timing ?
Check out my Video's I have one in there on timing this engine. Haven't watched it in awhile, so I'm not sure how much detail I went into. Hopefully there is enough info to get you squared away.
Yes they can. I just hope these video's help some people out.

do you have to remove upper oil pan
yes... and mid oil pan, as well as the back and lateral pans.
Yep, it's easier to just swap the motor. And now it's really beneficial if you use 07+ altima VQ.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching.
Thanks for all the info. You the man bro
OMG bro... Thanks so much for uploading this video... and putting in the hard work. :)

Do you know if I can get the engine out from the top because I don't have a lift?

Can anyone tell me where I can get a step by step instruction on a motor swap. Videos or book that I can order. 2003 Maxima SE

google is your friend
You could make some marks on the chains and sprockets before you remove them, but it would much easier and safer if you do put it at No1 TDC. HTH
Getting dizzy from all the camera movement! Get a tripod next time.
Hello, so where did you get the VQ35 page(s) for the timing chain?
Right now I am not doing any side jobs as I have a baby due soon and I am getting ready for him. Sorry.
u said u have a shop so im guessing your an experienced mechanic. Having seen lots of cars why do u think the Japanese choose to do certain things differently in their cars? Some things are just a pain in the neck.. it this just to be different or are their specific reasons why?
These post-Renault nissans become money pits real fast.
Now i can see why most tech ,just take the whole engine out when working on nissan.
thanks for the vedio
Dude go to Home Depot get some $8 flood floor lights the video would of been perfect now it looks too ways too dark
Hey dude you wanna date my sister for awhile?
I need this shit done on my Maxima - it's annoying the fuck out of me...
So if you did this again would you pull the engine?
Thank you so much for the video - i'm sure it will save a life or two!!!
Great vid.. Thanks,
