This has that old time, blood n guts shoot out feeling like between Ezzard Charles and Joe Louis, or Jersey Joe and Louis, etc. Some masterful boxing combined with minutes of maniacal slugging
He's no longer with us, but at the time of this bout he was a ref under the Nevada state boxing commission, although he had worked as a ref in other states. Becoming a boxer while serving in the Marines, he won the welterweight championships in both NCAA & All-Far East associations, later compiling a 10-1 record as a pro before hanging up the gloves. After being a referee since 1971, he finally retired from the ring after refereeing the Hearns-Snyder bout in November of 1998 (notably, Lane was the ref when Tyson bit Holyfield in the ear). He went on to be a judge on his own reality court TV show.
The difference wait,wait.....{ Muhammad Ali 🥊}is The*GREATEST OF THEM ALL!!!!!,,, /Larry Holmes did keep the Heavyweight division going and interesting,, His jab was certainly one of a kind....From ......the Moment in Sports desk°
@AllyMakk47 not all will get that Paul Harvey sign out, but Funny! Respectfully disagreeing, & going with the unpopular opinion of Holmes beating Ali regardless of his health. (And for those who thought Ali was making excuses for his health against Larry, you can clearly see in his lost to Berbick that he wasn't the guy who accidentally OD'd off weight loss drugs.) Larry had the Upgraded version of Ali's jab, & wouldn't let him get away with certain things most in Ali's past did, & would cut the ring better, as well as fight in ways that would make Ali come off the bike in order to land. Larry also respected body punching much more. I can't see any Ali past 1973, giving him anything but a hard time but still losing on points. And the Ali who had the Best shot winning against the Holmes is the 60s Ali! The problem is 60s Ali didn't have 70s Ali's chin! But it's 60s Ali's speed and reflexes that had the best chance of beating Larry, IMO.
That is Miles Lane...announcer called him Carlos Padilla...Round Five. Again in Round 7. You would think the Directors would have said something to the announcer by now. Ray Leonard sitting right beside him, he knew the difference. Berbick...they called him AWKWARD, I think he was sloppy. Not much of a boxer, and his brawling tactics played into Larry's hands, for the most part. Holmes seemed bewildered at Berbick's tactics. Sad Ali would fight Berbick and lose. Ali would have made Mincemeat of Berbick at one time. Holmes' Jab was bar none, but his overhand right was also deadly, as was his right uppercut. I often wonder how Berbick even GOT this fight. It reminded me of the "Bum of the Month" phrase.
In 2006, 52 year old Berbick ended up in a deadly fight with his nephew over a land deal, and took a hatchet to the back of the head. Rough way to go. RIP
Larry Holmes was the most Underrated Heavyweight Champion…. He got a lot of flak cause he beat Ali no one forced Ali to fight Holmes, Ali got beat fair and square… if Ali was to old to fight that was his problem not Holmes’ problem
100% and it was Ali and Don King , that pressured Larry to take that fight . King controlled Larry's career , and he had no choice . Ali also knew he was sick and too old . Then blamed Larry for getting beat up .. what the hell did he think would happen ? Larry hold his hand the whole fight , and sing praises to him ? It was a fight not a support meeting .
I agree 100%! I was a kid watching all of Larry's fights in the late 70's & 80's and back then few gave him anywhere near proper respect. The constant claim was that Larry didn't fight any tough opposition, but IMO alot of that was due to just how dominant Larry was in the vast majority of his fights; he made even good opposition look run of the mill. We can look back now and realize that he fought ALOT of past and future Heavyweight Champs in his title run, including Norton, Witherspoon, Berbick, Weaver, Bonecrusher Smith, etc as well as many very good punchers or fighters like Shavers (x2), Carl Williams and Cooney. Larry Holmes is Top 3 Heavyweight to me all time, behind only Joe Louis and Ali.
Holmes in his prime would've given Tyson a very hard time, when Tyson and Holmes fought that time Holmes was 38 years old and rusty from coming off of a two year layoff
@@leighwright3450 I agree prime Holmes would not be an easy fight for any heavyweight ever. I do slightly favor 1987 Tyson over 1981 Holmes only because I think Mike would be able to get in brutal body shots early and thus weaken Larry. Also Holmes was pretty vulnerable to the overhand right. So I think 1987 Tyson would more than likely work Larry's body as much as he can early and eventually get in the killer punches to the head. Getting past the greatest jab in heavyweight history would definitely not be easy of course. It is another one that could go either way but I just think the style of Tyson would be problematic for Holmes. I favor prime Holmes over sever fighters that I think would beat prime Tyson though.
Mike said himself , he didn't fight the real Larry in 1988 . In his prime Larry would have been on the move .. all night . On his toes , and harder for Mike to get at . All while having a fast jab , offsetting him . With his short reach would have been harder . Watch Larry from 1978 , vs Shavers . And tell me that's the same guy Mike fought in 88 . With the same reflexes and speed and movement . No way
RIP Joe Louis, he was watching his final boxing match of his life on ring side
RIP Berbick and Mills Lane.
Holmes beat Berbick in the ring AND in a car park! 🤣
Yo that drop kick from Holmes was HILARIOUS 😂
I loved Holmes back then and I love him now. One great heavyweight!
Very interesting fight. Pound for pound each way. Weldone to both boxers though one is to win.
Larry VS. Trevor
He was calling the ref Mills Lane Carlos Padilla lol
I know I'm saying what the is he talking about

Respect to Berbick for not hitting Holmes while his back was turned. 😎
That was da only way he was gonna beat Holmes

This was a really good... fight (struggle), but I'm sooo sorry Holmes didn't or couldn't knock Berbick out.

Berbick has an ambling gait....always seem off center and appears...clumsy
The was 1 Great referee and fight
Holmes probably has the best jab of any heavyweight past or present.
But Ali have the fastest jab in history of heavyweight.
Holmes jobs mean Ali's...and Ali is the fastest in his prime time.....sorry to say....
Nope, that would be Sonny Linston. Ali was just to fast for him to land it on him but Linston ko'd fighters by jabbing them to death.
Lennox Lewis Was up there Big Time

Holmes fights were so gritty and old school. I hate I disliked him so much back then. Ive matured.
Why gas out your stamina. Holmes fought in his 40s and got a decision over mercer
Berbick the best of all time
I can't believe they'd hire an announcer who doesn't know who Mills Lane is!
