Both Men just gave there all and it could have went either way. I remember watching this fight. People forget that Going into 1978 Larry was 26-0 and He had to fight Earnie Shavers in March of 78. Leon Spinks was getting title shot against Ali in Feb of 78. Ken Norton had defeated Jimmy Young in November of 77 in an elimination match. Leon Spinks only had 7 fights but he was a gold Medalist and a name. Larry had been a top 10 Heavyweight but Ali had no interest in fighting Holmes. Even when Ali regained the WBA Title from Spinks He retired shortly after. He didn't start calling out Holmes until two years later because He needed money. This fight though between Holmes and Norton was between the two best fighters in 1978. Muhammad Ali didn't really want to fight Norton for a fourth time. That's why he took the Spinks fight because he was delaying it as long as he could. This was Norton's last hurrah as he was never the same after this fight. He would only have a couple more wins as he would suffer devastating first round knockout losses to Earnie Shavers and Gerry Cooney. Larry would go on to be recognized as Heavyweight Champion for the next 7 years making 20 successful title defenses before losing a close decision to Michael Spinks in September of1985.

Yes Norton was a truly nice man, personally I think it was his style that made him as good as he was, his unusual style made it very hard for his opponents
Yes your right Kenny fought the best. His style was to come forward in his crab like position. And he would give guys like Ali. And Holmes trouble every night of the week because they were not Big heavy punchers. He couldn't last 2 rounds with the heavy hitters like Foreman. Cooney. And shavers.

Ken Norton symbolizes the great competition of the heavyweights. An exciting fighter he was who I believe got the best of Ali. The third fight could have easily gone his way decision wise. I felt he won.

After more decades than I care to admit being a student and a scholar of boxing, scoring a fight fairly, with the biased commentators on and off (it's amazing what they can sell) if you can count to 8, especially if it only takes you 10 rounds to get there that's all. I admit it was tough but that close, nah. It was a way to give even rounds to the champion, that's all In my opinion, I think Holmes was hard done by, lined up a fight with Young (who should have been the champ, think he squeaked past Norton in a much closer fight) but he lost twice to Occasio, who Holmes beat while waiting to give Norton another chance if he too could beat Shavers, but fought Earnie again instead. Yes these are my opinions, and that's all. Holmes won this by 4 points minimum, 5 if you give round 13 2pts to Holmes. Norton, gave 2 of the greatest heavyweight champions all they could handle. Norton, arguably beat Ali, in all 3 of there fights.Holmes, said Norton was the best he ever fought.
I think Holmes knew he had won on points, and wanted to prove/ demonstrate that he was not just an Olympic boxer like Ali, but could give and take a punch, and was a 'fighter', so he stood toe-to-toe with a 'professional heavyweight'.
Norton (good fighter for sure) has the wrong kind of muscles to be effective over a long fight. They're unstretched, bulky and they fill with blood causing him to tire and slow down...Angelo Dundee gave a lecture on this years ago...boxers should have smoother more elegant muscle tone. Norton lifted weights, was trained at one time by Franco Columbo believing it would give him a strength advantage. Muscular strength is not really critical to be a great boxer...it's leverage and timing.

143-142 for Holmes
Holmes won rounds 1-5, 7, 13, and 15
Norton won rounds 6, 8-12, and 14
8-7 Holmes in rounds
Rly could’ve went either way, but the slight edge to Holmes
Great fight
Holmes didn't win the 15th round.
Norton, gave 2 of the greatest heavyweight champions all they could handle. Norton, arguably beat Ali, in all 3 of there fights.Holmes, said Norton was the best he ever fought.
At least 2 out of the 3 Norton definately won against Ali. The second fight Ali edged him by a whisker
Ali won 2 out of 3//can't split rounds with the champ and expect to take the title////Holmes won almost every round vs Norton/Holmes TOOK the title 💯
@@active.7universal Norton 9-5-1 for me.
Holmes fight like Ali.
I think Holmes knew he had won on points, and wanted to prove/ demonstrate that he was not just an Olympic boxer like Ali, but could give and take a punch, and was a 'fighter', so he stood toe-to-toe with a 'professional heavyweight'.
Norton landed heavier shots all night. Cosell biased toward Holmes. Norton won 9-5-1.
That's a damn lie
