Mike just gave him respect , of course he had and more then one . Actually i think he would have won in a more competetive fight , but i like Larry's chances in a longer fight also .
Not sure anyone beats mid-late eighties Iron Mike other than possibly Ali in mid 60s before his expulsion, lennox lewis at his best or maybe Sonny Liston at the real age of 28-32.

Anyone else notice what a great job Davey Pearl does as a referee at only 5 feet 4 inches tall? As a bit of trivia, he was at one time the manager of Sunny Liston. The fighters were better back then and so were the referees.

Sparring with Ali was a boon for Larry. The Bonecrusher was a tough boxer. Holmes’ reputation precedes him. Larry was in great shape here. Moved spryly.
Both fighters had cuts over their eye but Smith’s was worse. Unfortunately that cost him the fight. Smith was not afraid of Holmes at all and fought him to a standstill. Holmes was fortunate to get away with this one. The outcome could have been different but for the bleeding injury on Smith.
Holmes was winning a decision when the fight was stopped. Bonecrusher was a big puncher who stopped Tim Witherspoon and Frank Bruno. Holmes had to be careful.
So this was Bonecrusher's 16th pro fight?... for the world title against the great Larry Holmes? I just think Smith could have had a greater career if his team slowed things down more, as he clearly had a ton of talent to even get to this level and do this well on his 16th pro fight.. amazing really

People have to realize the two fight on the day for the day not what they where ten or so years ago or what could have happened.
The outcome would have been the same Larry Holmes would have been knocked out by Iron Mike Tyson eather way.
