From 1955 till 2014 I truly believed that no one would nor could ever take Elvis' place in my mind nor heart! Then I saw and heard 7 yo Angelina singing 'Gloomy Sunday'! In the nearly 10 years since that night that I heard her she has turned my world and the way I thought about music, and even life, upside down! With every Elvis song she has covered, and every time I hear her singing one of them, I cry. I can't explain it, and it is not from sadness that I cry! I think maybe it is from happiness. I finally realized that between the two of them I now know that his music will never die!
Over the years people suggested she could be Elvis's daughter... For a whole lot of reasons. Physically she looks like she could be related. She has the heart of Elvis, and she's the consummate story teller who loves to step on that stage and perform for us.

Angelina sings a song in the way she feels it should be sung, based mainly on the story the song is trying to tell. Sometimes that means she stays very close to the original, sometimes she makes different artistic choices, usually subtle, sometimes for various reasons she totally reinvents it, like this time, or Bohemian Rhapsody, while remaining respectful to the original artist. She truly is a generational talent.
@@nickforell1 Angelina changes her voice to suit the message of the song. This song is a story of regret and pleading about a tragic emotion, jealousy. So the upbeat, poppy Elvis take is not as congruent with that message. She can sing upbeat too, if it is appropriate to the song.

When Angelina was very young, she sometimes followed or channeled other singers. The best examples were her initial performances on Norway’s Got Talent where (at 7) she channeled her singing muse, Billie Holiday. Later on, even to this day, she often pays homage in her covers to the original singers with her pronunciation, or her tone, or her phrasing. I could hear some vocal nods to Elvis in Suspicious Minds in addition to the visual cues to Elvis and Priscilla. But Angelina’s voice is unique now. One or two words into the lyrics-you know it’s Angelina, even though she gives us so many different genres and vocal styles. And aside from those vocal qualities, there are signature elements to her singing that you don’t hear from any other singers: her runs and riffs, her killer vibrato, her endless vocal textures, and that amazing musicality that flows from her so effortlessly.

This vocal arrangement was all Angelina, I have no doubt in collaboration with a stellar team including Rob Christie & Mery Zamani her Grandmother. She is a Master Storyteller. The video is shot in the same Antique Store that she did 'My Funny Valentine' on Valentine’s Day. I believe it is in LA near her home. I believe the girls in the video represent Angelina's Journey from infancy to present through the classics of music history. Thus the Antique store, She grew up studying and performing these classics. That is Rob Christie on piano. Sister Juliette and a couple of Uncle Michael's Babies. I think that makes them cousins not nieces. Full Black Leather Bodysuit, the guitar from his concert in 68 and the hair a homage to Priscilla Presley. Yeah! She can bring tears to your eyes. I base my interpretation on my knowledge of Angelina's journey from an 18 month old little girl singing a "classic" of music history 'I Will Always Love You' . She has been listening to these classics on repeat on YOU Tube since then under the guidance and inspiration of her Grandmother Mery Zamani. She has been performing these classics since her first time in studio at 6 yrs old.. She has continued this journey through her 1st introduction to the world with her "Classic'" 'Gloomy Sunday’ and following with her many performances at her many Jazz Festivals, TV performances, Concerts, and charity events, studio recordings and practice sessions at home accompanied or not. The location in the Antique store represents these classics (like the furniture) of another era. To me she portrays wonder at all these classics surrounding her. as she has travelled this road. Her tribute to Elvis is at her present age, today, each stage represented by her cousins and sister and ending with Angelina herself on the couch still admiring all this history surrounding her. An other Angel said it first..... Angelina does not cover songs, she uncover songs. What a contrast this is to the upbeat almost happy version by Elvis. I quite liked the Elvis version too, but I never realy listend to and took in the lyrics before Angelinas version.
I think a factor is growth… both physically and emotionally… which is to say she seems to be starting from a peak and what can we do but compare and enjoy the ride!

Her Original Music, she goes by what and how she feels, she has millions of sounds at her disposal. If someone tries to Box her, they soon discover (if they continue to listen to her music) that it’s impossible to box or compare her to anyone. And the greatest gift to all of is the volumes of films of her covers and personal and professional development since she was 18 Months Old. Absolutely what I expected. She made this her own song and she did it beautifully. I noticed Juliet sitting there she is going to be as beautiful as Angelina one day. Elvis' version is great, and it still is one of my favorites. but Angelina's version is equally great and is definitely her own. When I first heard this song I loved it and put it at #3 on my playlist (Angelina Jordan Playlist by Terry M.), about midday I moved it up to #1. The main thing that changed my mind was the power in her voice. I'm not talking about loudness I'm talking about the power she has regardless of how loud or soft she sings. This is a quality that I haven't heard from anyone in my 83 years. This voice has become so unique that it is totally unmatched. Her phrasing in the last bridge is great. And she got Elvis’s ‘Oh Yea’ at the end of the song. The pianist is Rob Christie (3 Grammys), he is the head of the Republic Record department that is responsible for Angelina and other singers. The two small kids are her uncle Mike's kids, and the older girl is Angelina's sister. Pianist Rob Christie wrote the musical arrangement and Angelina created the vocal arrangement. The beginning credits show that Angelina’s grandma, Mery Zamani is the executive producer. The two youngest girls are Angelina’s uncle Michael’s children. Michael is also Angelina’s manager. The middle school aged girl is Angelina’s sister, Juliette. Everything about this production pays homage to Elvis’ 1968 Come Back Special. Angelina’s bee hive hair style is what Priscilla Presley wore back in those days. Angelina’s full length black leather outfit, the red guitar she is using and pianist, Rob Christie’s red overalls are what was used and worn at that time.

I know what you mean, Owen. Angelina did the same thing with Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody. Totally unique. She made them her own. This song was written by Memphis singer-songwriter Mark James, an old friend of Elvis. When he heard the demo, Elvis told Mark he wanted the song and the female background vocalists. Mark's original slower version never took off, which is why he allowed Elvis to record his own version. It went to #1 and relaunched his career. I have a feeling Mark appreciates Angelina's version, a sort of vindication for him. Mind you, I'm sure he also appreciated the royalties that came rolling in thanks to Elvis!

Nick, Angelina clearly has a highly developed intellect, instincts and intuition. Her ability to interpret the correct emotional content of lyrics that the writer intended for them to convey is beyond her chronological age. IMO, it is those attributes and more that make her a bona fide musical genius. Your admiration for all things, Angelina precisely mirrors what makes all of us adoring fans love her so much. She had the innate ability to touch our hearts and souls unlike any other artist we have encountered.

Hi Nick, Hope you had a wonderful day! Sorry I couldn't be here for the premiere but I just watched and like you weren't surprised by Angelina's performance, I wasn't surprised by your reaction. As you may know, she has approximately 200 performances available on TH-cam from the ages of 6 to 17. This is one of my favorites as well, as there is so much going on here. The richness and fullness of her silky voice, the lower register and some of the intonations that gave an Elvis vibe, the symbolism in the set and hair and clothing, And that little bit of jazz ad lib that is her signature. There are some people that don't like the fact that she slowed it down. They are used to the faster paced Elvis version. I certainly love the Elvis version because it is legendary, but I think Angelina had a greater purpose in doing what she did. She is a master storyteller and infuses emotion in everything she does. At the faster pace, most people don't hear the story, they just hear the music. By slowing it down, the music became the background and her voice and the lyrics became forefront. It's probably the first time most people have actually heard what this song is about, and it is brilliant! You are right on point with the fact that Angelina is Angelina and you can't compare her to somebody specific. She is known as the barefoot princess of 1,000 voices and obviously you know the reason. She can embody any of her influences to adjust her tone, style, register for the particular song. But she does not mimic or copy. She remains true to herself. Another trait that you may not have picked up on in your early phases is that Angelina is able to convey the emotion of the original lyrics even though she has not experienced the events that precipitated the song. She did this even as a child. She tends to take what she hears and in her mind adapts it to things she has experienced. For example, when she did Gloomy Sunday on Norway's Got Talent, she was 7 years old, doing a song by Billie Holiday about suicide basically. When the judge asked her what the song was about, she said a sad Sunday. She didn't know about suicide necessarily, but she knew what sad was and she was able to convey that emotion. All I can say is that her emotional maturity has always been off the charts. Don't feel bad about getting emotional as she has done this to most of us on many occasions. Her goal from a young age was to sing for the world to spread love and peace and that is exactly what she does and we feel it. Peace and love to you. By the way, I don't know if you've done Million Miles yet, her original from a couple of years ago after she signed with Republic. I would say it is even more emotional than this one and beautiful. I would probably go back in time to Norway's Got Talent, I put a spell on you, what a difference a day makes, feeling good. Those are pretty much chronological, And then work in her original when you see fit.

For quite some time, many Ångels have come to the realization that Angelina has the uncanny ability transform the lives of those who hear her sing through the emotions conveyed in her voice. Ever since she was little her “mission statement” has been to “spread love ands sing to the whole world.” The kindness towards one another that Angelina explores her audience to share among themselves and others is palpable and in many cases, life changing. Your reaction was much the same as mine. My mother was born the same year as Elvis(made sure people knew that every time he came up in a conversation) and was a huge fan. I would imitate Elvis performances growing up to entertain her. I love Angelina's cover, just amazing.

I was exposed to many types of music growing up, my dad was in a band ( rock, country&western, jazz, classical, blues, disco, rap ect...) I am 68 now & out of thousands of singers I have never heard so unique a voice as Angelina Jordan. She wins the cake & gets to eat it also.

The song was written by Mark James, an American singer/songwriter, who recorded it the year it was written. The best known version, however, was that done by Elvis Presley. It was his last No 1 song. In the Wikipedia entry of the origins of the song, Mark James is said to have remarked "That late one night, he was fooling around on his Fender guitar and using his Hammond organ pedals for a bass line and came up with what he thought was a catchy melody. At the time, he was married to his first wife but still had feelings for his childhood sweetheart, who was married back in Houston. James's wife had suspicions about his feelings. He felt it was a confusing time for him and that all three were "caught in this trap that they could not walk out of." Other singers covering this song invariably base their performance on that of Elvis, in that it is very "upbeat". Angelina took a very different path in that she read and understood the lyrics and what Mark James intended when writing them . To my mind, her rendition is much truer to the emotions of the song. The children appearing in the video were Angelina's cousins Aurora (first) and then Athena - daughters of her uncle Michael Astar, and then her sister Juliette. I would hazard a guess that they were included to emphasise that children are very important to Angelina and her family. Confession! I have never been a great fan of Elvis Presley, although I do like some of his earlier recordings, and I had never heard of the song "Suspicious minds" but knew that Angelina would completely take ownership of it, and she did. It was beautiful. After listening to it several times, I decided to download the lyrics to see whether she kept to the original structure. She didn't, and the song is all the better for it. For me, that she started with the Bridge of the song is very significant and, I feel, very indicative of Angelina's "up front" transparency. She was declaring that it was important that their love did not die, and then carries on to say why she feels as she does. Others first say how they feel and then, almost as an afterthought, assure their love they don't want it to end. For me, it is whether I feel the singer is genuine about the situation and wishes it could be resolved or whether the singer understands the situation but thinks the blame is on her/his partner but feels the need to assure them they don't want it to end (until somebody else comes along).

Chameleon yes massive talent but the best thing is her interpretive flair touching the heart of the song in a way that even Elvis did not and it was his song (still is his) but gosh I so adore her ability to sing about the things that really matter. Because time is ever fleeting. 🙏🏼

You are and will continue to find that Angelina pays homage to artists who she loves and whose songs she covers. The homages in this particular video are clear .. she is wearing a leather outfit as Elvis did and is using the same guitar he used on his last and iconic tour. The place she is in is full of beautiful and expensive things, as Graceland was/is. You can find many other details in this video that are homages and show her love for his ways and his world. Her hair is done the way Priscilla often wore hers. Rob Christie, Grammy award winning musician, wears an outfit like Elvis' band wore on that last tour as he plays the piano here (I believe this particular piano accompaniment was written by Mr. Christie specifically for Angelina's version of the song.). One homage she paid Elvis in another video was very touching ... when she sang How Great Thou Art in the same key Elvis sang it. It is a phenomenal feat that very few artists, let alone a woman artist, could have managed. It is amazing to get to know an artist as humble and loving as Angelina. She never tries to be "better" that anyone she covers, but instead focuses on pointing out iconic details that she loved about them. She is unique and humble and honoring to others. There is actually a video of the both of them doing a song together, but nobody interprets a song and makes it her own like Eva. Her iconic version of Over the Rainbow is now being copied by other artists. Sting called her version of Fields of Gold the version he wished he had done. You owe it to yourself to listen to her.

Angelina’s grandmother produced this video. It takes place in one of her families antique shops. The guitar she plays on is actually one of Elvis’. She also pays tribute by wearing blue suede boots which you can see when she’s laying on the loveseat 🇨🇦♥️🇨🇦

Even though this is a Mark James song, Elvis made it super-famous and she acknowledges that in many ways, including visually. With every Elvis song she has covered, and every time I hear her singing one of them, I cry. I can't explain it, and it is not from sadness that I cry! I think maybe it is from happiness. Sometimes that means she stays very close to the original, sometimes she makes different artistic choices, usually subtle, sometimes for various reasons she totally reinvents it, like this time, or Bohemian Rhapsody, while remaining respectful to the original artist. She truly is a generational talent.

When Angelina was very young, she sometimes followed or channeled other singers. The best examples were her initial performances on Norway’s Got Talent where (at 7) she channeled her singing muse, Billie Holiday. Later on, even to this day, she often pays homage in her covers to the original singers with her pronunciation, or her tone, or her phrasing. I could hear some vocal nods to Elvis in Suspicious Minds in addition to the visual cues to Elvis and Priscilla.

I believe the girls in the video represent Angelina's Journey from infancy to present through the classics of music history. I base my interpretation on my knowledge of Angelina's journey from an 18 month old little girl singing a "classic" of music history 'I Will Always Love You' . She has been listening to these classics on repeat on YOU Tube since then under the guidance and inspiration of her Grandmother Mery Zamani.
She has been performing these classics since her first time in studio at 6 yrs old.. She has continued this journey through her 1st introduction to the world with her "Classic'" 'Gloomy Sunday’ and following with her many performances at her many Jazz Festivals, TV performances, Concerts, and charity events, studio recordings and practice sessions at home accompanied or not. The location in the Antique store represents these classics (like the furniture) of another era. To me she portrays wonder at all these classics surrounding her. as she has travelled this road. Her tribute to Elvis is at her present age, today, each stage represented by her cousins and sister and ending with Angelina herself on the couch still admiring all this history surrounding her. The beautiful rendition of the song, and other tributes are in the leather outfit, Guitar and hair a tribute to Priscilla. Just my interpretation but it makes the most sense to me. ♥👣👸🏻

Great Reaction, now you’re discovering “The Barefoot Angel of 1,000 Voices”. Each cover she introduces another level of her vocal gifts. Her Original Music, she goes by what and how she feels, she has millions of sounds at her disposal. If someone tries to Box her, they soon discover (if they continue to listen to her music) that it’s impossible to box or compare her to anyone. And the greatest gift to all of is the volumes of films of her covers and personal and professional development since she was 18 Months Old. Absolutely what I expected. She made this her own song and she did it beautifully. I noticed Juliet sitting there she is going to be as beautiful as Angelina one day.
Elvis' version is great, and it still is one of my favorites. but Angelina's version is equally great and is definitely her own.
When I first heard this song I loved it and put it at #3 on my playlist (Angelina Jordan Playlist by Terry M.), about midday I moved it up to #1. The main thing that changed my mind was the power in her voice. I'm not talking about loudness I'm talking about the power she has regardless of how loud or soft she sings. This is a quality that I haven't heard from anyone in my 83 years. This voice has become so unique that it is totally unmatched.
Her phrasing in the last bridge is great. And she got Elvis’s ‘Oh Yea’ at the end of the song.

Pianist Rob Christie wrote the musical arrangement and Angelina created the vocal arrangement. The beginning credits show that Angelina’s grandma, Mery Zamani is the executive producer. The two youngest girls are Angelina’s uncle Michael’s children. Michael is also Angelina’s manager. The middle school aged girl is Angelina’s sister, Juliette.
Everything about this production pays homage to Elvis’ 1968 Come Back Special. Angelina’s bee hive hair style is what Priscilla Presley wore back in those days. Angelina’s full length black leather outfit, the red guitar she is using and pianist, Rob Christie’s red overalls are what was used and worn at that time.

I know what you mean, Owen. Angelina did the same thing with Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody. Totally unique. She made them her own. This song was written by Memphis singer-songwriter Mark James, an old friend of Elvis. When he heard the demo, Elvis told Mark he wanted the song and the female background vocalists. Mark's original slower version never took off, which is why he allowed Elvis to record his own version. It went to #1 and relaunched his career. I have a feeling Mark appreciates Angelina's version, a sort of vindication for him. Mind you, I'm sure he also appreciated the royalties that came rolling in thanks to Elvis!

Nick, Angelina clearly has a highly developed intellect, instincts and intuition. Her ability to interpret the correct emotional content of lyrics that the writer intended for them to convey is beyond her chronological age.
IMO, it is those attributes and more that make her a bona fide musical genius. Your admiration for all things, Angelina precisely mirrors what makes all of us adoring fans love her so much. She had the innate ability to touch our hearts and souls unlike any other artist we have encountered.

Hi Nick, Hope you had a wonderful day! Sorry I couldn't be here for the premiere but I just watched and like you weren't surprised by Angelina's performance, I wasn't surprised by your reaction.
As you may know, she has approximately 200 performances available on TH-cam from the ages of 6 to 17. This is one of my favorites as well, as there is so much going on here. The richness and fullness of her silky voice, the lower register and some of the intonations that gave an Elvis vibe, the symbolism in the set and hair and clothing, And that little bit of jazz ad lib that is her signature.
There are some people that don't like the fact that she slowed it down. They are used to the faster paced Elvis version. I certainly love the Elvis version because it is legendary, but I think Angelina had a greater purpose in doing what she did. She is a master storyteller and infuses emotion in everything she does. At the faster pace, most people don't hear the story, they just hear the music. By slowing it down, the music became the background and her voice and the lyrics became forefront. It's probably the first time most people have actually heard what this song is about, and it is brilliant!
You are right on point with the fact that Angelina is Angelina and you can't compare her to somebody specific. She is known as the barefoot princess of 1,000 voices and obviously you know the reason. She can embody any of her influences to adjust her tone, style, register for the particular song. But she does not mimic or copy. She remains true to herself. Another trait that you may not have picked up on in your early phases is that Angelina is able to convey the emotion of the original lyrics even though she has not experienced the events that precipitated the song. She did this even as a child. She tends to take what she hears and in her mind adapts it to things she has experienced. For example, when she did Gloomy Sunday on Norway's Got Talent, she was 7 years old, doing a song by Billie Holiday about suicide basically. When the judge asked her what the song was about, she said a sad Sunday. She didn't know about suicide necessarily, but she knew what sad was and she was able to convey that emotion. All I can say is that her emotional maturity has always been off the charts.
Don't feel bad about getting emotional as she has done this to most of us on many occasions. Her goal from a young age was to sing for the world to spread love and peace and that is exactly what she does and we feel it. Peace and love to you.
By the way, I don't know if you've done Million Miles yet, her original from a couple of years ago after she signed with Republic. I would say it is even more emotional than this one and beautiful. I would probably go back in time to Norway's Got Talent, I put a spell on you, what a difference a day makes, feeling good. Those are pretty much chronological, And then work in her original when you see fit.

For quite some time, many Ångels have come to the realization that Angelina has the uncanny ability transform the lives of those who hear her sing through the emotions conveyed in her voice. It is also a great tribute to Elvis - Angelina's beehive hairdo is reminiscent of Priscilla Presley & her black leather jumpsuit & red Hagstrom guitar are just like Elvis used in his "Comeback Tour". I was exposed to many types of music growing up, my dad was in a band ( rock, country&western, jazz, classical, blues, disco, rap ect...) I am 68 now & out of thousands of singers I have never heard so unique a voice as Angelina Jordan. She wins the cake & gets to eat it also.

The song was written by Mark James, an American singer/songwriter, who recorded it the year it was written. The best known version, however, was that done by Elvis Presley. It was his last No 1 song. In the Wikipedia entry of the origins of the song, Mark James is said to have remarked "That late one night, he was fooling around on his Fender guitar and using his Hammond organ pedals for a bass line and came up with what he thought was a catchy melody. At the time, he was married to his first wife but still had feelings for his childhood sweetheart, who was married back in Houston. James's wife had suspicions about his feelings. He felt it was a confusing time for him and that all three were "caught in this trap that they could not walk out of."
Other singers covering this song invariably base their performance on that of Elvis, in that it is very "upbeat". Angelina took a very different path in that she read and understood the lyrics and what Mark James intended when writing them . To my mind, her rendition is much truer to the emotions of the song.
The children appearing in the video were Angelina's cousins Aurora (first) and then Athena - daughters of her uncle Michael Astar, and then her sister Juliette. I would hazard a guess that they were included to emphasise that children are very important to Angelina and her family.
Confession! I have never been a great fan of Elvis Presley, although I do like some of his earlier recordings, and I had never heard of the song "Suspicious minds" but knew that Angelina would completely take ownership of it, and she did. It was beautiful. After listening to it several times, I decided to download the lyrics to see whether she kept to the original structure. She didn't, and the song is all the better for it. For me, that she started with the Bridge of the song is very significant and, I feel, very indicative of Angelina's "up front" transparency. She was declaring that it was important that their love did not die, and then carries on to say why she feels as she does. Others first say how they feel and then, almost as an afterthought, assure their love they don't want it to end. For me, it is whether I feel the singer is genuine about the situation and wishes it could be resolved or whether the singer understands the situation but thinks the blame is on her/his partner but feels the need to assure them they don't want it to end (until somebody else comes along).

Chameleon yes massive talent but the best thing is her interpretive flair touching the heart of the song in a way that even Elvis did not and it was his song (still is his) but gosh I so adore her ability to sing about the things that really matter. Because time is ever fleeting. 🙏🏼

You are and will continue to find that Angelina pays homage to artists who she loves and whose songs she covers. The homages in this particular video are clear .. she is wearing a leather outfit as Elvis did and is using the same guitar he used on his last and iconic tour. The place she is in is full of beautiful and expensive things, as Graceland was/is. You can find many other details in this video that are homages and show her love for his ways and his world. Her hair is done the way Priscilla often wore hers. Rob Christie, Grammy award winning musician, wears an outfit like Elvis' band wore on that last tour as he plays the piano here (I believe this particular piano accompaniment was written by Mr. Christie specifically for Angelina's version of the song.).
One homage she paid Elvis in another video was very touching ... when she sang How Great Thou Art in the same key Elvis sang it. It is a phenomenal feat that very few artists, let alone a woman artist, could have managed.
It is amazing to get to know an artist as humble and loving as Angelina. She never tries to be "better" that anyone she covers, but instead focuses on pointing out iconic details that she loved about them. She is unique and humble and honoring to others. She blows my mind.

Everything you said about Angelina is also true of what I think is the best cover artist of all time; Eva Cassidy. There is actually a video of the both of them doing a song together, but nobody interprets a song and makes it her own like Eva. Her iconic version of Over the Rainbow is now being copied by other artists. Sting called her version of Fields of Gold the version he wished he had done. You owe it to yourself to listen to her.

I am really enjoying your Angelina reactions. You are more perceptive than the vast majority of reactors and picked up on the more subtle Elvis vocal homages. Even though this is a Mark James song, Elvis made it super-famous and she acknowledges that in many ways, including visually.
