Ronnie Sax -, Dick Pearce, Flugel-Martin Drew, drums, -Ron Mathewson, Bass- John Critchenson, Piano. Dick is the only one still with us! (even Ted Rogers has gone!) To those expressing amazment that this ever occurred, (me too, I don't remember it at the time) Ted Rogers was a great Jazz fan and I suspect he had a lot to do with getting the band on, probably with quite a resistance. Kudos for Ronnie et al to play so uncompromisingly!
LOVE the sound the bassist is getting, sort of a hybrid sound between a fretless electric and a double bass! Great player too. Extremely originally unmistakable style.
Funny that for a Saturday evening TV programme they chose a pretty heavy duty bop number and played it as such as well. Happy days watching all those guys live many, many times.
Well kind of. Its basically an altered blues. Great to see the band again though. Like you I spent many happy hours at Ronnie's listening to fantastic music and Ronnies repetitive terrible jokes :))
Was this on 3-2-1? Or similar can you imagine this on the Ant and Dec show? No me neither. Every space on tv is now taken up by some chart act and yet we’re supposed to be ‘inclusive’
Incredibly, Ron never seemed to value his own playing as much as the rest of us did. He worshipped the great American players but he was the equal of most of them. After all he played with the amazing Tubby Hayes abdxwas not overshadowed by him imo. And I still re-tell his jokes to people who are too young to have heard them live! Eg. " My parents ran the only jewish pub in the East End, The kosher horses". You had to be there.
andrea22213 Late Martin Drew on drums....I would often see him live at Maida Vale back in 1972 - 1975 recording for the BBC's "Sounds of Jazz". He was a regular and a great drummer too. RIP to both him and Ronnie.
On a game show? What a waste ! John Chritchinson still going strong. Saw him with Simon Spilletts 'Standard Miles' band recently at the Lighthouse, Poole.
You should have gone to Ronnie Scott's club and heard the 10 minute version back in the day. This 3 minute job is for the benefit of the masses on a Saturday night game show and not catering especially for the jazz lover.
The one and only Ronnie Scott. Magnificent!!
Fantastic group. Ronnie was a beautiful player

Every time I hear him again I value more and more Ronnie's playing.
Unbeleivable Cool the lead from ronnie solo into Critchinsons solo is sublime
Truly wonderful ❤

Would you see anything like this on light entertainment show today ?
Odd that Ted Rogers would feature jazz on a game show on itv but I take my hat off to him. It was a good move.
The late Martin Drew on drums
Just wonderful! From 3-2-1! Who knew?
This is fabulous!
This is really Hard Bop. Brilliant. It is in the mould of Watermelon man

Written by Herbie Hancock who also penned watermelon man.
@@tellitlikeitis-rg4ny Watermelon-Cantaloupe? Think about it.

Love it! Is it just me, or does the trumpet player makes that fluglehorn sound like a standard trumpet?
With great music like this, why do people listen to rock?
Masterpiece
Arbennig, Ronnie - sain gwych! Pawb yn gwrando ar ei gilydd ac yn cyfathrebu'n dda. Bravo!!!
Far too few vowels.

@@TheChoccyTube It was Ron Mathewson
Great band but amazing playing from Ron Mathewson!
Slick & fast & brief. I guess they tailored it to the gig. Would've liked to hear them stretch it out a bit...

Wow Chuck Norris on the bass??
On 3-2-1??? Crazy....these guys deserved their OWN programme on TV. Typical UK broadcasters who know nothing about jazz.
Martin Platt A gig is a gig.
andrea22213 Very true Andrea.

And John Critchinson. Is Ron Matthewson still around?
it's quintet and the clip was taken fr a game show fr england i suspect
On a game show? What a waste !
John Chritchinson still going strong. Saw him with Simon Spilletts 'Standard Miles' band recently at the Lighthouse, Poole.
Not now. Think Ron is still about and dick pierce
What you mean ? hes on prime time TV, seen by millions !
Martin Drew on kit not good time keeping
No ! I'm afraid it's not the same, without Tubby.
Oh ! What a big let down, I was expecting something on the fabulous Tubby Hayes style, but all we get is long notes and trllls. Rubbish.
Perhaps you could ask them to come back and do it again for you.

Few realize that Ronnie Scott was the sax player on the original recording of the Beatles Lady Madonna.
