My husband was a dry waller and did these California ceilings for years and he was very impressed with your workmanship. Plus the music was perfect. Thank you

This is all good, the only suggestion that I make is that when you knock it down, go the same direction. When you are pulling the partially dry nub, it will expand in a certain direction. To have a clean match you will want to go the same way. And if you ever have to repair, it will be easier to make the new texture match the old.

That some serious technique!! It's fun watching a professional. I have a small bathroom repair job in my home I will be doing this work myself and I think it's going to be fun trying to get it to look professional. Great video. Thanks.

you can save time by folding youtr masking tape in half lengthwise, back to back, apply the tape to the perimeter of the room, then just slide your plastics edge up the wall and it'll stick right to the tape. saves tons of time and its real clean looking.

i normally prime before hanging poly, the poly will hang better when taped to the primed walls, if you dont prime first you may have the poly fall off the walls when you add weight by spraying the compound, i find the orange peel method has an unfinished look about itself but whatever floats your boat i suppose

About 15 years ago, I saw someone texture a ceiling sort of like that, but he also added what looked like a low gloss paint. The ceiling had a fresh coat of light blue paint, and he added an off white paint to the joint compound. The result was that the texture was slightly glossy and it was very striking.

Whats recommended these days is to use a sealer after you have scrapped off all the popcorn because of UV damage. Skim the area with drywall compound twice and then prime and spray or it may turn yellow.

I've heard some things called "California" this or that, like a California Cut roof valley. I've been doing drywall finish since the early 80s and this is the first I've heard knockdown called "California Ceiling". A different DIY method for knockdown-results *are not* the same though.Let the medium-to-heavy orange peel dry fully, then sand lightly to slightly flatten the bumps. The look is different than a dragged version, but,a DIY person doesn't get the dreaded lines from the knife.

My husband has a question for you. He wanted to know your technique on how to repair part of a California ceiling when there is water damage? Do you think he has to scrape the whole ceiling, fix the problem and then spray again or is there way to fix the area only and have it blend in? He also wants to know where did you ever get the knock down tool. We live in Canada and my husband has always used a hand tool, crazy..... Thanks

    • @EncoreServices

@EncoreServices We apply the exact same Texture on the walls, and then of course Paint.
Yes, we Prime the the texture on the ceiling because the color on the ceiling has to go with the walls and trim. and as I am sure you are aware there are over 50 shades of white.
So do yall just leave the walls up north untextured like that?

We're removing popcorn texture in a bedroom today. I'd love to try doing this but wonder if I'll find it's quite difficult for an amateur to get a good result. If I were to make a poor job of it, would it be difficult for a drywall man to correct it? Do you need to sand the surface after it dries or is it finished at the end of the video? thanks so much!

it's also smart to round the edges of your knife to avoid the dreaded lines, those ends have a tendency to get bent, to one side or the other, just a slight roundness , maybe that of a pencil eraser...

I've textured for 10 years and have seen other people try to texture and i assure you the end result is not beautifull. If a person is not experienced and sometimes even if they are the result is uneven, spray lines, some flattened to much others missed or not enough. My advise is if your going to put something that covers 1/3 of your house get a qualified reputable professional. If you get a good 1 you'll be glad that you did.
