Buttons sent me some video of him surfing back doors just before he got real sick and went to California. The footage is of him by himself surfing with a GoPro mounted to the front of his board. The footage is absolutely priceless. I will post it as soon as I get it out of storage.
A legend. Surfing on the clouds of Heaven. #Buttons #Kaluhiokalani (March 30, 1959 - November 2, 2013) +surfermag #legend #surfer #surfinglegend #montgomery #Ernest #Thomas #hawaii
Buttons was a regular at the Kaiser Bowls in his teenage years...many a morning it was just him and I and a few others out there at the crack of dawn catching waves... very humble ..cool guy...RIP
I remember Buttons and his possie hanging out at the Hilton hele-port at Little Beach Waikiki he was always so nice to me, I had an awful crush on Michael Ho, who had no idea I was alive but Buttons always had a hi and a hug for me, I was just a teen ager growing up in the Alawai Harbor 1969-1979. He had such a sweet Spirit.
Why hasn't/didn't this surfing style become standard,.... that is some of the most entertaining surfing I've ever seen. Buttons should've been huge as a style influence,... but instead we only prominently hear of Bertlemann and Curren from that era. MR? kinda, he was a just a carver. Curren was just a carver, but upped the style and radical factors. But Buttons knocks them both out, KO. Buttons was even doing backside 360's in 1978. MR? Curren? Not at all during their entire careers.
It was 1970 something, we were working Hawaii Kai condo framing for brada Walta (the Walta) naff said. I had brought a 6' twin fin from South Bay. Drag a paw and spin. The kathunks in town told me don't let the local on the North Shore see the funny board. Butts get in his face and said, " Hay brada G lives at Sunset Point.
Today I watched the Buttons episode of Dog The Bounty Hunter . It was sad how far he went down hill . R.I.P Buttuns.
