Disqualified - Fresh from Court and Chat with Nice Cabbie V2UFU

  • Is me or is this numberplate super rude? V to you, F you? This was filmed on the day before the law change in March 2022, and in this case the Bentley driver was clearly engaged in interactive communication, whilst the cabbie was not, at least not whilst I filmed him. The Bentley driver was given a 6 month disqualification, and was told by the magistrate that he would have to apply for a new licence to the DVLA at the end of the six months, and that he could not drive until he had the licence in his hands.

      He'll just hire a driver (if he's really a rich lawyer) and get his accountant to somehow tax deduct it.
      I remember about 30 years ago there was a guy who lost his licence (drink driving / excessive points etc) and he was actually hiring a local to drive him around (on call). By using his own car he would only be paying the other guy basic minimum wage or maybe even an agreed cash in hand by the hour.

      They have the means to investigate, but that doesn't mean they employ those means. They would have to schedule the sentencing for another day to get a pre-sentence report. They would much rather just get it over with. The disqualification is the important thing, anyway.

  • @JustSomeVideos0

    Good work Mikey!!!!! It turns out my sudden drop in NIPs a couple of months back was due to changing from an editor that used a x264 codec to one that uses x265 which apparently can't be viewed by MPS!!! So if anyone else finds no action is taken on a submission in which it likely should have worth checking which codec is used in the editor (eg by viewing video in VLC and checking codec information). If it's x265 it's unlikely it'll be acted on. Normal service has now resumed since reverting to x264......

    • @CyclingMikey

    • @JohnDuffell

      @dedistaulapanodki6293 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CyclingMikey What's lazy of them (or of their IT people) is to not be able to handle the codecs used by all mainstream video capturing devices. It's not rocket science. And they normally prefer unedited, original footage. The moment you process it in some way, it's no longer "original".

    • @combat246
      @combat246 ปีที่แล้ว

      I also noticed a drop in NIPs lately. Checking my GoPro footage, it says it's using an H.265 codec, but oddly a report I made on 3rd November 2022 (NIP issued 11th November) was using an H.265 codec so perhaps they've resolved the issue?

    According to the DVLA website today ( 30 Nov2022 ) the MOT on that Bentley expired on 16 Sept 22. So perhaps he has mothballed the car whilst he’s disqualified.
    And on another issue, the DVLA ought to withdraw his entitlement to have that private number plate as you are not allowed to misrepresent the numbers and letters by spacing the digits incorrectly.

    A few years ago a good friend of mine was killed while cycling home in Central London and a car went straight over him. The driver didn't initially stop so witnesses stopped the car. The police didn't even check the driver's phone. Not all the witnesses details were taken either. I stopped cycling after a couple of near misses and didn't let my children cycle because cycling has become so dangerous during my lifetime. I know far more drivers than cyclists but no drivers I know have been killed in RTAs but four friends have been killed while cycling, three in London and one on a country lane. I applaud what you are doing, Mikey, I think you're saving lives.

      Who is sad? You're sad. You're crying salty tears because bad driving is being caught and punished. You're salty because you identify with criminal drivers.
      Most of all I'm happy that your reaction shows how much traction this idea of good citizens videoing and reporting road crime has gotten in your head.
      Tens of thousands of cyclists run video cameras and will report bad driving around them. From now on you'll remember this conversation every time you see cyclists on the road, and you'll think about some of us filming you. Some of our cameras are very easy to see, like GoPros, and some are nearly impossible to spot. Have fun looking for cyclists' cameras on the road.
      I'm not even in the top ten most prolific reporters in London.
      I suggest you drive properly around us all. Feel paranoid. Google your own number plates. Regularly.

    What? I’ve watched your videos for months. Although I think you’re a tad obsessive… overall my opinion has been that you’re doing this for the greater good - the safety of other road users. That will always be a good thing. However I cannot believe you’ve just let one guy off because “he’s a cabbie” and “you don’t approve with Uber”. You’ve thrown everything you stand for out the window and now made this entire channel null and void in my opinion.
    Also, I know you will likely just mark me as a “troll” but as aforementioned - I have binged this channel previously on a number of occasions in favour of what you do. I’ve even mentioned you positively on my podcast which gets 500k listens per episode. But letting off a cabbie because you like them is mental, you may as well let off the next woman you find attractive; or somebody wearing your favourite sports jersey.
    Redundant now.

    • @CyclingMikey
      @CyclingMikey  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, as I said on twitter, you couldn't be more wrong. This is because this happened when the previous mobile phone law was in effect. That required us to prove that the phone was not only being used, but specifically being used for the purposes of interactive communication, being texting, talking to someone, etc . The Bentley driver was involved in interactive communication on his mobile, a clear phone call. The taxi driver, I had no proof of any interactive communication, so there was absolutely no chance he could be convicted. This is why I warned him that the very next day if I caught him with a lit up phone screen, he'd be prosecuted, as the new mobile phone law took effect the day after this. I don't hate the drivers I catch, which is why I'm generally friendly to them. I do dislike their illegal behaviours.
