CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Chuck (Tom Hanks) is heartbroken when he loses Wilson out at sea.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
An exploration of human survival and the ability of fate to alter even the tidiest of lives with one major event, Cast Away tells the story of Chuck Noland (Tom Hanks), a Federal Express engineer who devotes most of his life to his troubleshooting job. His girlfriend Kelly (Helen Hunt) is often neglected by his dedication to work, and his compulsive personality suggests a conflicted man. But on Christmas Eve, Chuck proposes marriage to Kelly right before embarking on a large assignment. On the assignment, a plane crash strands Chuck on a remote island, and his fast-paced life is slowed to a crawl, as he is miles removed from any human contact. Finding solace only in a volleyball that he befriends, Chuck must now learn to endure the emotional and physical stress of his new life, unsure of when he may return to the civilization he knew before. Cast Away reunites star Hanks with director Robert Zemeckis, their first film together since 1994's Oscar-winning Forrest Gump.

@@hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm6671 i don't think it's the atual volleyball we are crying about but rather the whole situation of not being able to save your only friend albeit a volleyball.
I LOVE THIS MOVIE I THINK TOM IS BRILLIANT AND THIS SCENE REALLY GOT TO ME ITS ALMOST LIKE THE BALL IS HUMAN AND I FOUND IT SO EMOTIONAL WHEN TOM CANT REACH IT I REALLY WANTED TO CRY ITS SUCH A MOVING MOMENT IN THE FILM 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Wilson was not just a volleyball. Wilson meant so much more than that to Tom. Wilson protected Tom for many years from total loneliness and isolation. Being lonely is a killer for most of us humans because we are social beings. Wilson probably prevented Tom from losing his mind and perhaps even to commit suicide. So, we all feel this paramount vital significance Wilson had for Tom. Wilson was Tom's savior, kept him going and alive. This is why many of us cried when watching this scene. Including myself.
I miss Wilson man…
I Wonder why he doesn't tell them about what happened him, I thought they would ask him. He should tell(only his love) that he was so lonely and suddenly found a ball... Changed it little so it had eyes, mouth and hair. And this ball saves him..he talks to the ball, she would understand.
He should tell everyone how much he had to learn... How difficult it was to fix fire, how much pain he had in one tooth and had to take away the pain himself... But I Wonder how he can know how long time he has been there🤔 It's so sad that his wife suddenly 'forgets' him and 'moves on'. Later when they finally meet she doesn't have 'so big' reaction... So sad... It's not until she shows him that she keeps their car... Then he drives away, she calls his name and runs to him... He runs too... Then they kiss very passionately🥺😥😭❤️But sadly their love can't win, he drives away... Wonder why💔
wilson came up with the idea to test the rope right? without him tom would have killed himself for sure
@@toxiclady218 life is fundamentally more sad than not

Brilliant acting...he makes you FEEL for a volleyball
yeah my favorite actor
supastar
ye, that portrayal of Wilson was pretty great!
You don't feel for the volleyball, you feel for the stranded man Tom Hanks is portraying, He says "I can't." because he knows he can't risk his life away for a volleyball, but he also knows that it was his only companion this whole time, maybe his only reason he kept his humanity.
Wilson's no ordinary volleyball
The actor who played Wilson deserves an oscar for his performance.
tom hanks he's amazing actor in Forrest hump too x
+tasha ullah he's talking about wilson..
He was just another one of those thousands of Volleyballs made by the Wilson company but this movie gave him recognition
smol pp TRUE
I can't believe how many people's head this joke went over.
I know people who were just randomly zapping through channels when this scene was playing and they found it absolutely hilarious. I don't blame them, after all, it's just a grown man crying over a volleyball. However, when you sit though the whole movie and you understand the context, the scene becomes one of the saddest in cinema history. Such a brilliant film.

It’s not just about a man crying over a voleyball. It’s about what that ball represents, his hope , his sanity that kept him alive during all those years. Deep down he knows it’s just a ball, but it ignores it so that he can survive, it’s the only thing to whom he could vent and express his joy, grief, anger and vent. The only thing he had with him that reminded him of home, civilasation. Wilson was truly a cling of hope.

Me too :/
I have the feeling that Wilson fulfilled his job which was to prevent Chuck from going insane and prevent his suicide. When it was clear that those things wouldn't happen he left. I think it's also a beautiful metaphor for Chuck leaving the island and his past behind. Like an end to a chapter. I know it sound kinda strange since "he" is a volleyball, but he was human enough to make us and Chuck feel.
This is exactly what I think. I interpret it as Wilson saying "Hey Chuck, it's time for me to go. We've been through a lot and I've always been there for you but I can't be with you when you go back to civilization. I've served my purpose and I'd practically be useless when you go home. Farewell, old friend."

I still can't believe I cried over a volleyball. The music, the acting, the way it's shot...it all combines beautifully to form one of the most emotional scenes I've witnessed in cinema (to this very day). This scene honestly beats out any soppy romantic film I've ever watched. EASILY

Tom Hanks went to the core for that scene. RIP Wilson. Never forget!
Such a powerful scene. Thank you for this movie, Tom Hanks.
Only such an amazing actor can make a losing a volleyball moment that emotional and touching.
The music is probably just as important.
It's an archivement in cinema to make the public feel bad for a inanimate character.
The only other time this was accomplished was in the movie In Bruges by Ralph Fiennes.

I cried
He created wilson. For 4 years that's the only persona that he interacted with , in his head or whatnot. I'd say they became more than just friends, more like a family. Wilson is probably more real to him than any of the people we call friends. If this scene really happened in real life, the human without a doubt will drown trying to save a "volleyball". And for any of you wondering why he didn't swim it's not even that far, you've never spent a day diving in open waters. Pool tides and the open sea are two different beasts. In the latter, you'll only learn that you pushed yourself beyond capacity when it's too late.
Every year, hundreds of wilsons are lost in the mediterranean while trying to illegally get to Europe.
And some of their friends survive to tell their stories
People need to appreciate the power of this film. If your movie can make an audience cry for a volleyball you know you've succeeded.
The saddest scene in the whole movie
Correction. The saddest scene in any movie.
There were a few. When he was looking back at he island, loosing Wilson and when his girlfriend got In the car
Michael Shearer best scene in the whole movie actually xD
I'm sorry wilson, the most touching words ever spoken in the whole film history.
I think the reason why we are so touched by this scene is because we can relate to it when we remind ourselves of the people we lost and had no choice but to say bye even though you wanted them in your life :(
😢😢😢😢😢
I think it's the link between that and the love of an inanimate object like we had when we were a kid. It is a very relatable scene but Tom Hanks delivers it with so much emotion it's almost hard to watch its so good. 😭 RIP wilson
Been through so much made me numb to emotions.

He would still be grieving. Still knowing that Wilson was both: an inanimate object and a friend with a personality.
He felt his loss because he is human. The part of him that creates connections needed to act and did it.
Could he just had got home, bought another volleyball paint a bloody face on it and pretend it was Wilson returned?
I don't think so. At least not if it was me. I wouldn't have "bought" it. Even though the reasonable part of me knows the ball was never really alive to begin with... the other part is not actually that disconnected from reality.
Could he had fabricated a ritual to bring "Wilson's spirit" into the new Volleyball? Maybe. I wouldn't have "believed it" either.
I think that, had it been me, the only solace I could have found is this: Wilson, as an inanimate Volleyball, is pretty much inmortal. He would be adrift at sea, but not dead. And maybe he would land in another island, where he would found crabs to talk to. Or if he found himself lonely, maybe he could fabricate another imaginary friend on his own
Ok
I'd be making his portrait and remembering him. Sometimes talking to him, like people talk to the dead.
I never cry at anything, yet I cried over a ball.
OMG loneliness is a very bad feeling .. especially when we loose a sincere companion

I wish I could tell you that Wilson fought the good fight, and the water let him be. I wish I could tell you that - but the ocean is no fairy-tale world. He never said who did it, but we all knew. Things went on like that for awhile - ocean life consists of routine, and then more routine. Every so often, Wilson would show up covered in saltwater. The water kept at him - sometimes he was able to fight it off, sometimes not. And that's how it went for Wilson - that was his routine. I do believe those first two years were the worst for him, and I also believe that if things had gone on that way, this place would have got the best of him.
