After 24 years in service I retired form the military in 2013. 4 tours in Iraq gave me so many brothers and sisters. You are so right about the bond among soldiers. This song hit home today. Thank you for doing this. :)

This song is honor and tears.... And also forced wars, when they didn't wanna, sometimes we are forced to fight brothers in arms.
I fell in love with this song and what I see as its bigger meaning. I’ve tried to listen to many Reactions to it. I find yours to be the Best of all. You don’t keep stopping it to tear it apart and miss the whole. These various Reactions show how this wonderful vision goes across the nations since it was written for the Falklands War between Britain and Argentina. It becomes universal. I has spent most of my working life serving the US military as both a Civilian and a loving Air Force Wife. I’ve seen veterans torn by the loss of their brotherhood. It is such an intense bond. There are those who worked this out by helping others, other veterans, other people, even other animals, find the common world to fight for these Brothers in Arms.

This 1985 Dire Straights song was about a Falklands war soldiers who is mortally wounded and as he is dying talks about the brotherhood of his comrades and the futility of fighting each other. This was released for Veterans Day 2021.Tim Foust is the bass singer, he has a 5 octave range and can also sing higher tenor ranges. The background vocal harmonies are fantastic and the the last two notes sounded just like a church pipe organ. This to me is one of their signature masterpiece songs. One day the Argentinian soldiers and English soldiers were friends next day they were killing each other in the name of their country
thank you for sharing this. I knew it was about the futility of war, but never knew the back story. Tim Foust is a BEAST..Have you heard his song "snowglobe" ? Home Free is perfection to my ears and soul.
I have a friend, and army officer who was responsible for returning our soldiers who had died in the Falklands. To be able to do your job while retaining the utmost respect for the sacrifice, especially while the deceased's brothers in arms were standing right there. He spoke about it at a Memorial Day presentation at the Antietam Battlefield in Sharpsburg MD where more American's died in a single day battle then any other time in our history. Moving on so many levels!

As a combat veteran I can say that there truly are brothers in arms. I lost many in both of my deployments. I have escorted the coffins home. This song has a lot of truth to it. The thing about the military is the fact that everyone who served and those who are now serving will always be brothers in arms. This song brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it
This wasn't about war.... this was about the men who fight the battles, facing the ultimate sacrifice every day. This describes every soldier who ever fought in any war in history. Each other is all you have.
Hauntingly beautiful yet sends a powerful message. They sound like a pipe organ. Notice there's no beatboxing. I really like how you are able to see things in a very unique perspective. Great analysis.
The bonds of brotherhood are not just in the soldiers. That same bond runs with in the families of those left behind as the spouse father or brother goes into the battle fields. The bases full of those left behind bond ever bit as strongly as the soldier. It's our support that gets us through a sameness.
I have always loved this song by Dire Straits but think Home Free did an excellent version of this song. Tim's natural breathy bass was awesome along with Chance's smooth baritone & loved it when all the guys were doing 5 part harmonies. Who would believe humming could sound so good. They gave it a very solemn feeling. These guys are my favorite a cappella group out there.
This was written by Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits about the war between UK and Argentina over the Falkland Islands. You might also like them singing 'Brother' a funny video but with another message of brotherhood

I lost my Marine grandson 5 years ago. He was 23 years old. I also have to grandsons served in the Air force. My family has always fought in every war! We love this country!
There was mention of "Dire Straits", but the writing genius was Mark Knopfler. Please give him proper bows. His writing is economic and masterful.
Freedom is the ability to respond genuinely without fear of being cancelled. I am so glad you feel free to express your authentic self whether or not it lines up with your listeners' expectations. Some folk struggle to understand that you can enjoy the stuffing out of an artist without necessarily giving them max marks in every facet of performance.
My parents are both big Dire Straits fans, so I played this rendition for them, and they seemed to like it. For myself, I find its minor-key sound chilling and heavy. A serious song about a serious subject that is seriously powerful.
This five part arrangement was first done by the Finnish A Capella Group Club for Five. Tim asked their bass, Tuukka to send the arrangement. Tuukka loved and later praised the echo sequences Home Free added to put their stamp on it.
21 year Vet here, not all the bonds are tight with all, some become a bond for life and the ones that are not as tight you can bet when it becomes tough they are the ones you can count on.

The original with Dire Straits is as beautiful, Marc Knopler makes a heartfelt guitar playing that made me cry first time i heard it. And they are British, not American. And Tim Foust has such a beautiful voice

I just see people. Sometimes hurting people. people that I can ask if it is ok that I say a prayer for them. Or they play forward and buy my groceries like a total stranger did because I forgot my wallet. We didn't care about each others politics. We just cared. Don't let hatred rule us. Original arangement is by acapella band "Club for five" and Tim was contact bass singer Juka to make their own version of this arangement..
Tim mainly added the echo sequences to the arrangement. I have heard the Club of Five song and it is also very good. I recommend that everyone go listen to their version too. I heard that Julia liked what Home Free did with song.
A small correction to your comment: the name of the bass is not Juka, it is Tuukka Haapaniemi. Tim contacted him and told their plans to do the song and Club for Five sent their arrangement to HF.

Rosalie, you pretty much nailed it all. I consider this their top masterpiece (they have 2 others - Helplessly Hoping & How Great thou Art). This is a very very special cover of a Dire Straits song, written by the Straits leadsinger Mark Knopler in honor of those who lost their lives so needlessly during the 1982 Falklands War between Argentina vs the UK....the parts where Home Free is singing just notes & harmonies in the original it was all guitar solos. It's an extraordinary song lyrically. Home Free has used this platform to carry the messe that they think is important be damned what retaliation it brings them. When we had civil unrest in 2020 they produced, to me, one of their more profound videos - its a cover but a powerful one, written by Paul Kauthen, called "Everybody walkin' this Land" I urge you to react to it, and make sure to listen to Tim's message at the end....it's also showing that these guys continued to work & produce music even during the Quarantine times. I also urge you to explore some of their originals, and being the daughter of Cuban exiles, their cover of Brooks & Dunn's amazing song "Only in America" will touch your heart too.
It’s a beautiful song. It is written by Dire Straits about the Falkland War in Argentina in the 80’s. That was guitar driven. This is voice driven. It’s so beautiful. Tim, the bass, is amazing. When you hear him live, his voice goes through you. What is amazing about him is that he has a 5 octave range so he can sing low like this and then sing high with the tenors….no kidding. I am not usually a country fan but have found many songs that are so good. I think it was Shawn Stockman (of Boyz II Men) who said country is just the “white man’s” R & B. He was a judge on the NBC show the Sing Off that Home Free won in 2013. He’s so right. What you said was so spot on. It’s love and compromise that will help us get through to one another. We’ve got to be kind and patient with others. I have military in my family too and this was gut wrenching. Such a good spin on the song. Loved the echoes. Some other songs you might like are What We Ain’t Got, Die a Happy Man. Tim and Austin write a lot of songs and Tim just wrote a sweet one you might like called What’s Left of My Heart. This was a deep reaction to a powerful song. This is what I love about Home Free, they can elicit emotions in every song, be it sadness, silliness, reverence or love. They just released a beautiful love song that is an original written bt Tim Foudt and 2 others. It talks about our brokenness and ability to love. What's Left Of My Heart. It is gorgeous.
The song has lost nothing of its topicality, on the contrary, the message is more current than ever. It is very emotional. The guys did a fantastic job. Tim and Chance's voices are phenomenal! Wow 💥.
I spent 12 years, 4 Enlistments in the Army. War stopped me. I went to college and got a MA in World Religions. Reentered as a Captain becoming a Chaplin. Too many deployments into Afghanistan. Forced retirement in 2020 because of Diabetes. Total time was 22 years 7 months for my Army.
This song floods my mind of all the young men and women that I held their hands over injuries both physically and mentality. When watching that last breath leave the body can never be forgotten.
The Home Free song that most affected me is “Movin’ On” from 6 years ago when Chris Rupp left the group.

Yes, this version of Home Free will send shivers through your entire body! This is so emotional, especially with what is happening in Ukraine. Beautifully sung by Tim and Chance(which is just amazing), but the background and harmony of Adam, Rob and Austin is also so beautiful. It looks like a choir or actually a kind of church organ sounds. And the whole setting of the video is just amazing. It is visually so good. Simple but with so many details that makes it so profound
I am Dutch (or Indisch/Indo as they call us). My father spent 4 years in the Japanese camp. Often in isolation. My father survived because of a fellow prisoner, who sometimes secretly gave him bread and drink. This fellow inmate became his best friend until his death. My father had become a hard man and we were raised that way. He died in 1969 (3 days before my 6th birthday) from the physical effects of the war. His friend watched us until his own death.
Vietnam veteran 1970 - 71 were are brothers for life.

Chance forms a trio with The Hound and The Fox, a husband and wife duo on quite a number of songs. Their version of Hurt is very heartbreaking.
Tim and Chance are dead, singing to their Brothers who survived. As a combat veteran who lost soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan, I can’t get through this version without pausing.

The phrase brothers in arms has been around since the 1480s for fellow soldiers and knights, perhaps modeled on the post-classical Latin frater in armis, a “brother in arms.” In the military, there’s historically been emphasis on the concept of fraternity and camaraderie among soldiers, and brothers in arms represent such a mentality.

You mentioned that you like Chance’s voice. I have a few suggestions: “I Can’t Outrun You “; pure 5 part harmony, Chance directed the video, and it’s hauntingly beautiful; “Cover Me Up “, an emotional song; “Workin’ For a Livin’”, their take on Huey Lewis and the News, with a nod to “Anchorman”. And for another 5 part harmony,”Helplessly Hoping”. Two must do Rob leads are “End of the Road”, which is stunning, and “Blue Ain’t Your Color”.

Home Free's five-part harmony, with its 'church organ' effect, can be heard...and experienced... in a number of their songs. Adding to other recommendations for some Chance, 'Castle on the Hill.' 'One Man Band,' 'Finally Free,' and 'Helplessly Hoping.' Video trivia; when group shot of guys is tighter on Chance, most likely when Tim's huge dog, Satchmo, is sleeping at Chance's feet. ETA: Chance has some amazing solo work (big fan of his cover of Olivia Rodrigo's 'Drivers License'). Check him out when he teams up with The Hound and the Fox.
How Great Thou Art definitely delivers the pipe organ sound near the end.
Their video of Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer has a brief cameo of the Hound and the Fox with their son.as a toddler
Their son actually claps in time with the carollers. Also therr is cameo of Tim's friend who introduced Tim to the future Mrs Foust. Then there is also Darren Rusk, Home Free's producer who plays the unhappy homeowner in the video. All of these various people are interconnected in one vast music community.
The acapella world is a close noncompetitive world. Voice Play has close ties with Home Free even though they were competitors on The Sing Off. Avi Kaplan from Pentatonix performed in a video with Home Free. Home Free, Voice Play, and Pentatonix are considered three of the most outstanding acapella groups.
This is a cover of an arrangement by a Finnish group named Club for Five. Tim got permission from their bass singer to do it. A lot of people don't mention this. I really enjoy and appreciate your reactions and wish you much success in all you do.
Psychology lesson. My family fled Germany In 1939. Changed our surname to not be noticed, hid accents. So, I was raised a stoic. Then, when times got hard, I, as a child was mentored by Japanese internment survivivors.
So, some of that survives today...the stoicism. Yet, I have been identified as an extreme empath. You won't notice it unless you engage me. I'm perceived at face value.

Thanks for the reaction, good to see they did not disappoint, in this for them ' Deep Stuff' when it comes to sending a message but the harmonies on this are unsurpassable.
They are usually a lot more cheerful, at times quite goofy even.
So what next from them to listen to?. There'll be plenty of recommendations no doubt which is inevitable with Home Free being so versatile.
Personally, my recommendation is just to pick a song from their list you know and like to see what they can do with that, they just won't let you down.

The underlying message is told from the viewpoint of a dying soldier regretting the futility of war, of setting one group against another that does not really solve any problems.
All soldiers are "Brothers in Arms" facing the same dangers, the same fear, the same determination to protect their homes and their comrads.
We are of one world, we are living in different places, we are all ultimately human.

First time I've seen you, I subscribed immediately. My late husband, Master Gunnery Sgt Brien H. Holland, USMC, Brien Two Bears, was a Shawnee Shaman and a Scout/Sniper with 114 confirmed kills. War tore his psyche to pieces. But, all in all, he would have rejoined immediately despite being shot 5 times during Desert Storm. He had 3 Purple Hearts, 2 with Clusters, and a Bronze Star. I love this song, we both adored Home Free, and I wish he could have heard this song on Earth. I suspect he's listening in his version of Heaven, with his ancestor, Tecumseh. As a veteran, I can tell you it is stronger than the bond brother's have. I have brothers and they are somewhat close, but they haven't risked their lives or died in action to save mine. You forge families among the friends you choose in life that can be stronger than the ties you have with your actual relatives. For someone who lays it on the line for you, your family becomes the brothers to your right and left that put it ALL on the line. And the ones that pay that ultimate price only strengthen the bond you have with the ones that live through it with you.

this song hits me to the core each time I hear it. Not only are the words touching and TRUE, but the vocals touch my soul...I never get tired of this song and I share it with my family and friends. What I got out of the very first line is that the soldier expects to be buried where he was wounded "These mist covered mountains are a home now for me". got the tears going right away. The writer was also calling the opposing soldiers his brothers in arms, "Every man has to die, We're fools to make war on our brothers in arms."
Did you notice the double exposure of the soloists against the window? The frame of the window is visible through the singer. As if his ghost is there singing about his experience on the battle field.

The ghostly images of Tim and Chance framed in the windows evokes the POW-MIA flag, to me.
Imagery in this video carries a lot of meaning as well. Tim's slow and minimal movements during his parts shows a weak and fading character, as well as his breathy singing shows effort to be heard as he speaks to his friends.
