i reached out to koala after making this video and they sponsored a couple of my follow up videos. if you're interested in the sofa bed you can use us.koala.com/flonought to get $250 off your purchase (until Dec 3 for Black Friday sale). thanks for watching and for the support!
appreciate it! 🙂 and agreed, it's unfortunately just part of putting yourself out there online; gives you thicker skin. but you meet/hear from a lot of cool people from all over on here too, and that to me is still fascinating that we have that kind of reach today.
Hurt people hurt people... some people have no better life than to come on socials and bash people or give a nasty opinion. If the man wanted to sleep upside down in a chair, that's his business. Super cute. Thanks for the review 🎉😊
Thanks for taking the time to do the review. Considering one of these for a family room as an extra bed for guests. This was helpful especially since I like the luxe paperbark gray but am hesitant about that color but in your space it looks good.
you’re welcome. thanks for taking the time to watch. yeah i love this color, but it was lighter in person (which i prefer) compared to the photo online.
I also just moved to Seattle to a smaller space and bought this exact same couch!! I was looking for a review before I bought it but there isn't an unsponsored one to be found... until now:) It truly is a great sofa bed AND couch. I've had two guests sleep on it, and I slept on it for a few nights. It's also great for simply sitting on and watching TV. I'm glad you mentioned the crease - I'm a back sleeper so it did cause some discomfort for me, but I'm actually short enough to where I can lay sideways and avoid the crease all together if I so choose. Definitely something to think about for other people buying tho. Overall this was a great video and I'm glad there's finally a real review of the koala on the internet cause it truly is a great pick!
thanks so much for the insights! glad to hear you comment about sleeping on your back, that's great for other people to know. i imagined that would be the case because it seems the dip would be more noticeable in that sleeping position, but as a side sleeper it really surprised me with how comfortable it is. And appreciate the kind words, thanks for watching! how are you liking seattle so far?
Thank you for making this! I looked at these Koala beds last year because I live in a studio apartment in Brooklyn, and they unfortunately only shipped within Australia. I'm SO HAPPY to see that they now ship to the US, because there are no other companies making something as versatile as this.
absolutely, you’re welcome. i 100% agree with you! there really isn’t anything like it online; the colors they offer and the pillows that just fall over the sides are what stood out the most. appreciate you taking the time to watch!
@@SydneyDrums i think i saw someone else mention this brand too. this is one i haven't heard of before but it looks like they have some decent stuff too. thanks for the recommendation.
for sure, that is definitely something i’ll still be on the lookout for since it’s my full-time bed. my impression from researching was that it would be less maintenance/risk than the shikibuton/floor futon, but I understand it’s still a possibility if not cared for properly. i’m going to do an update video 3 to 6 months in to review how well it is holding up.
@@xxwoman in theory. It would still be something you should keep an eye out for regardless. The dehumidifier would be relying on proper airflow under the mattress and can only pull so much water in so much space. So you'd have to be sure that it's large enough to handle your space and be checking regularly, at least for a while after starting to use it.
@flonought humidity isn't really a thing in Seattle. When I had a futon in the late 80s, early 90s, I usually had it on a foldable frame so it could go from bed to sofa easily. Best for studios, as you'd imagine. Kept it on the floor a few times in incredibly humid places including Mississippi and didn't really have a mold problem as I recall. Welcome to Seattle.
lets of odd comments -- dont worry about them too much! just graduated college and got my first job and i'm going to be living in a studio. this sofa looks so awesome, thank you!
@sid8491 😆 oh i know, the internet is a wild place. i’m getting used to it more, but it’s something i prepared myself for getting into youtube in the first place. but appreciate that, thanks! all the other normal comments make it worthwhile. and hell yeah, congratulations! what a great life milestone. yeah for a studio space especially it is awesome. huge space saver. what’s the square footage of the studio you’re moving into?
Pseudo-futons were popular in the 1990s (go have a look at what Peer One was, and how much we loved paper lanterns.). Yet they were stigmatized as a thing convenient for students; you wouldn't want them in your adult life. We don't like mattresses flat on the floor. And the frames which tri-fold into a low couch looked like you had the seat of an old Ford in your living room. We didn't have the tatami rooms. We had pine frames, or none at all. The mats were stuffed with fiber, and the fiber crushed permanently. The pseudo-futons were also twice the thickness of Japanese futons because they weren't supported by the spring of a tatami floor. The weight discouraged you from putting it away daily.
😆 yes, I do remember those because I had one growing up; I'm a 90s kid. Our futon was super heavy and was on a pine frame. But I totally agree, those were a pain in the ass to put away.
you’re welcome. and i feel ya on that! it’s frustrating. it’s like anything else online when in the research phase, you end up with analysis paralysis. one review says it’s the best, another says it’s complete garbage, and then you’re stuck in a loop. maybe i can help based on the research i’ve done too; i looked at more sofa beds than i ever wanted to in my lifetime. what are the main things you’re wanting out of a sofa bed?
I've slept on all sorts of surfaces, on the floor, on a sofa bed, on upper bunk, and on regular beds, and worked in different setups, whether sitting, standing, or even sitting on the floor. I grew up sleeping on the floor, like on a tatami mat, so I really like firm mattresses. But here's something I've learned: if you sleep on the floor, it’s better to work sitting or standing. Working while sitting on the floor can really strain your body. I’m comfortable sleeping on the floor, but it’s not for everyone. If you’re not used to it, a regular bed is probably a better choice unless you have to sleep on the floor. Ideally, I’d go for a regular bed and a workspace where I can switch between sitting and standing. The Koala bed is fine i think(not sure i had similar looking sofa bed), but it does lose its shape over time, which is to be expected. Maybe the one you use here will held up a bit longer.. it looks nice tbh. Sorry for the random pov 😆😆
haha no worries, and no apology needed. the different perspective is appreciated. it’s interesting to hear how others prefer to sleep, work, etc., because everyone is so different. but i agree, switching from an actual bed is quite an adjustment. and for sure, that’s why i like being able to document this with follow up videos; currently editing the 2 month follow up video on this that i’ll release next. it will be interesting to see how well it holds up over time. yes, that quality of material on it is very nice.
After I learned about camping hammocks, I bought a stand that works indoors and IMO a hammock is really the best sleep. And if you think about it, around the world it's what people sleep on in the tropics, maybe right up there in numbers with people on futons. Currently I have a futon for when I take down the hammock stand because that takes up more space than even a queen bed and I'm in a 500 sq ft studio. But if I'm in a lot of body pain, I'll put up the hammock and see if it makes it better.
Very helpful. Our issue is that the doorway into the room is so constricted that we couldn't possibly get a regular sleeper sofa in. We bought a small loveseat that came in pieces but we really wanted a sleeper sofa. This looks like the answer for us. Thanks!
I just made the purchase yesterday for 2nd bedroom. It will be a sofa for me and a queen size bed for guests (bed use a couple times a year). I have a little concern for my guest, of getting up off the floor in the morning. It's either this Koala sofa bed or a King Koil Queen Plush air mattress. I'm hoping the Koala works!
nice! i hope it works out for you. definitely keep the trial period in mind if for some reason you don’t end up liking it and/or it’s not working out for guests. seems like a great option for you if you’re mostly using as a sofa too; the dual purpose is convenient.
Wow, I certainly hope the cushions on this thing hold up over time. It literally looks like an updated version of one I had back in my late teens when first moving out from home. Everybody called this style of sofabed the "Flip & F**k". EDIT: forgot to add the cushions on that one lasted maybe a year, if that.
i hope so too. the follow up review i’m planning on doing should provide a good indicator of how it’s holding up, especially since i’m using it a lot. i can say I’m getting better sleep on this than i was on my traditional bed before it, which is still surprising to me.
I would got this Sofa for my tiny Toronto Studio apartment then I could have had a 2 person dining table as my desk & eating next to my all in one 2 burner cooktop sink fridge unit with the Combi Wave™ 3 in 1 with the IKEA wardrobe
Hey! Looking to get this as a fulltime bed and sofa when lounging. It will get used as a main bed tho so every night. Is it worth it and still comfortable to this day for you? Thanks for the vid
Hey! You’re welcome. And yes, I believe it is. I’ve been using it since July 1 of this year and it’s still comfortable as both. For using it as a bed, I’m a side sleeper so I can only speak to that. But it’s worth noting that you do have 120 days to try it out and if you don’t like it Koala will pick it up for free. My link is in the pinned comment to get you $250 off.
@@TheRealvisionz Personally, I don’t like those. Usually I can feel the frame, they make the sofa in general much heavier (which is a bitch for moving), and usually there ends up being some kind of squeak. I can usually handle those at an Airbnb for a few nights, but there’s no way I would have one as a full time bed solution. If you didn’t watch my follow up review, I linked it below. I go into more detail about the crease. I did start to notice it, but I show a quick and easy solution that eliminated the small discomfort I was having from that. The quick answer is I move the mattress up about a fist’s width away from the back of the sofa th-cam.com/video/57JiAt_Y4EM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=fKQnyguA4ImwGEY0
I like hammocks. I had futons for a decade or 2 and liked them - as when I rolled them up I rolled into a cover and then it was a cushion for sitting at my low table, getting double usage. It was challenging to keep in shape, if not a well made one, and I didn't always have areas to let it sit out in the sun for several hours- which is really good for keeping it fresh. I don't like couches and I don't like beds because to me they are big cumbersome and hard to clean around and to keep clean, then you need another at some point and the only thing to do with the old is take it to the dump. Newest best choice is a hammock. There are some tricky things to get in order with hammock sleeping but over all I find it worth it because even the most expensive hammock is less than 300 bucks, it can unhooked on one side and moved to other giving use of a full room, it is not to difficult to keep clean, reading and sleeping in a hammock is good for brain activation and comfort, it is easy to move when one needs to move, when it wears out it can be used as spare material for other things like bags, shirts, plant hangers... I am not using camping hammocks they are a different animal. To sleep comfortably and to avoid back issues one needs to sleep diagonally or perpendicularly to the hanging ends, not in the banana shape. That can be tricky depending upon the space and the hammock type- whether it is a woven macrame type or a solid woven cotton type. There are pros and cons to these types. I have both and use both. The other tricky thing is an underliner to keep warm because one wants to not have to have blankets or stuff in between the body and the hammock as it can bunch. I am so used to it now- it is 2nd nature, just as it was I don't know, 30 ,40 years ago, when I plopped in a bed. I love swaying to sleep in the hammock. I have no problem turning or moving around, though usually do not need to turn much, I can though and curl up or stretch out legs. Even kitties like it. 2 people can swing it, but I prefer my own space. Some people think it means being single. It doesn't. I guess I'd ask why people think beds are the only way to conjugal bliss. Just writing it as an idea for consideration.
thanks for sharing, i appreciate the different perspective. i'm pretty minimal when it comes to things, but not sure i could/would want to do a hammock full time. i love a good sofa for lounging during the day so that would be hard to give up. i also like to stretch out when sleeping, so i feel like i would constantly be swinging or tossing/turning on a hammock. i do agree with you about beds not being the only solution. everyone has different needs and/or preferences for how they sleep, so really depends on the person.
true, and it’s a something i did research, but figured it would be kinda of a pain to move as they are heavier. and the process of making the bed is pretty minimal and it has become somewhat meditative for me in the morning and at night.
This was legit my exact situation and thought process. Even down to previously having the brown leather sofa. Except I also looked at murphy beds. And arrived at the same conclusion: Koala.
hell yeah, that's cool to hear you arrived at the same conclusion. figured there had to be others out there because you do have to get pretty creative with smaller spaces. appreciate the comment.
Thanks for this review! How has it held up for the last few months? Does it slide down /out when in couch form? I’m considering this for our office, where it’ll stay as a couch for the vast majority of the time - would love any thoughts on how it compares to other couches.
you’re welcome! it’s held up great. no, it stays in place. mattress is pretty firm as a sofa and bed, but comfortable and also helps for holding it’s shape; after 3 months it still looks brand new. as for how it compares to others, not sure i can be of much help there because i’ve had leather sofas for the past several years so going back to fabric has been new for me. but from a design perspective, i really like how it looks compared to others i researched. the side pillows, rounded corners for the side arms, and the fact that it sits pretty low to the ground are things i noticed right away that i like. but i also did a 2 month review on this and went into a little more detail if that helps: th-cam.com/video/57JiAt_Y4EM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=1IkLy1jVHnsKZ5vW
I like the overal idea of a murphy bed, but modernized. You hit a button on your phone, it retracts into the wall, and when it's up, it reveals a sofa that goes down into a compartment in the floor when not in use. That way, you don't have to mess with the sheets and blanket every time. I don't think this exists the way I wish it did, but it could 😂
Oh I totally agree with you! Those designs are pretty incredible for small spaces. This is a modernized example similar to what you're talking about/may have been picturing in your head; ignore the rent pricing and all that, but looking at this just from a concept standpoint this place is pretty cool. th-cam.com/video/hDCNaJKd4gU/w-d-xo.html
Very helpful, glad you found such a thoughtfully designed solution for your small space. I had an old IKEA version of this style from back in the late nineties; it was a terrible couch and awful bed ime. Nice to see those flaws I experienced aren't intrinsic to this style.
thank you! and appreciate you watching. agreed, i'm still super impressed by the comfort for a full time bed; it has saved me so much space in my apartment. it's hard to find something that's stylish, comfortable, and super easy to put together so definitely cool to see brands like koala out there.
well I have pets so leather is a must and this is really an expensive couch for my area anyway like you coud by a whole set for that price but i still watched it all because the review was so good and through!!
I love a good leather sofa, it just keeps building more character the more time goes on. And I really appreciate ya watching! I will say after all the research I did, and I looked at more sofa beds than I wanted to online, it’s definitely within the price range of what else is out there. You can get cheaper ones for sure, but I would guess the comfort level and quality would not be there for everyday use.
i’m breaking this down somewhat in my next video. in short, it seems easy enough to clean if you get a spill or something on it (not something i’ve had to deal with yet). the side pillows and the two back pillows can all be unzipped and washed, but the sofa itself can’t be. is that one of your main goals for the sofa is having something that’s easy to clean/durable to spills, etc.?
Thanks for review, been debating on getting something similar. Off topic though, u mentioned recently moving to Seattle. Would love to get ur take on being a new resident there coming from the Midwest; and mayb a video on u getting to know the area and vibe of the place. Ive considered moving to Seattle in the past but hear it can be different living there and meeting folks. Anyways, just a thought/request. Thnx!
you're welcome. appreciate you taking the time to watch! and for sure, i wrote down a topic similar to that for a video to potentially make so thanks for suggesting that and I'll keep that in mind for a future video. it can be quite a big change and seem overwhelming to move to a new state, but i can tell you in short that it's worth it. really comes down to your willingness to put yourself out there, be open-minded, be comfortable doing things on your own at first (going to restaurants, coffee shops, parks, taking walks in the city, etc.) making it a point to introduce yourself to people. if you have instagram, feel free to hit me up and I'd be happy to answer any specific questions you have about moving.
glad you’re excited! i’m stoked to do that video too, and am very happy with the apartment. waiting for my office chair to arrive and then i’ll shoot that video. will eventually have to get some of my photography printed and framed up also, but i’ll do that later on.
yes, two people can sleep on this. the dimensions for the bed are 61 wide by 79 long, which are about the dimensions for your standard queen size bed (those being 60 wide and 80 long).
@flonought It said it was full size but it was smaller, I squeezed a full-size mattress on top of it which bent the arms out a little. It wasn't the same brand, this was 30 years ago
@@crawkn Thank you for the clarification. When commenting, it would be great if you lead with that so people don’t get the wrong idea. Koala’s sizes and dimensions are clearly listed on their website.
@@flonought I will be 64. I need a nap daily now. Old age. Not joking. Up 7 am ..sleep midnight...but each afternoon so tired ...lol. Don't get old.😊😊. I can not do the sheets twice a day..lol.
@@Emma.E.Emerson 😆 i believe you, i wouldn't want to be doing that either. you have the right idea. future, older, fully tattooed, highly likely bald me is probably going to be napping all the time too. it's going to be awesome.
i enjoy it as a sofa, it's comfortable. yes, i have sat in it for a long time. my office chair took longer to ship, so i was using the sofa to work from home and then watch a tv show/movie after work. so there were full days on the sofa. i'm going to cover some of this in my next video, which will be a follow up for this to show how it's holding up after about 2 months.
hey! very informative video! could you please comment if the sofa is comfortable to sleep on a regular basis? We intend to buy one but use it for regular sleeping purposes. is the mattress holding its shape ?
hey, thank you! yes, i find it to be very comfortable. i’m a side sleeper, so i can only speak to that position. it’s been about a month of daily use and it still looks/feels great. i assume it will develop somewhat of a ‘lived in’ look over time. i’ll be doing a follow up video about 2 to 3 months in to show how it’s holding up and speak to it in more detail. but so far i couldn’t be more happy with the purchase, especially for my small space.
@@flonoughtI would love to see your updated longterm review! I’m considering a koala or a luonto for the same reasons as you except mine is a tiny room in NYC haha
@@AmazingTofuSlayer haha understood, a sleeper sofa seems like a great option for that! for sure, i’ll definitely be doing one. want to make sure mine gets a lot of use before doing the review to make sure i cover anything that comes up. i’ll most likely do one at the end of this month or so to get a full 2 months of use in for the first follow up review.
in my opinion it sleeps warm, but comfortably so. i don't think it's hot. to give you an idea, my current apartment in seattle doesn't have a/c - which i found out is pretty common here - and is usually 78ish for temp; currently in summer sometimes in the low 80s. i sleep with a fan on (low to medium strength) and a sheet and I don't sweat.
Thanks man! Much more comfortable than I thought it would be. And definitely, it has saved so much space in the apartment. So glad I didn’t go with a mattress and frame.
agreed, i was thinking about that as well but the issue - at least while i do not own my place - is most of them are pretty heavy. if i bought my own place, that would make a lot more sense. i really like this furniture builder/designer @gethandsdirty. she did a super cool murphy bed design for her place, and built it from scratch. i dropped the link below if you want to check it out. th-cam.com/video/pBsWQ2jT3Sw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=BEm4peI1CvRBW4zZ
i still love it, no regrets. what's your goal with buying, are you getting it to use as a full-time bed too or more as just an extra bed in your place? and what kind of sleeper are you?
@@flonought Appreciate the response. We're looking for a sofa for the office room (mostly for solo tv watching) that can also turn into a 2nd bedroom when friends/family are visiting. I'd guess it would be used as a bed about 15 nights a year, but I absolutely hate the old-school metal bar pull out sleepers and wouldn't wish that on any of my guests.
@@oliolioli. you’re welcome. okay cool, that’s good to know, appreciate the context. and i agree with you, those look very dated and usually are not that comfortable (or you get the creaks of the metal/springs when shifting). so here’s my long-winded answer that hopefully helps ya out. i looked at more sofa beds than i hoped to have looked at in my lifetime. the thing i noticed time and time again, is that a lot of them didn’t have a good aesthetic or if they did a minor detail would ruin it for me such as the sofa base being a weird color, the legs being too big or oddly shaped, the side arm rests being to thin or square (which makes it awkward or uncomfortable when laying down). i did look at other brands like article, ikea, burrow, sabai, and someone else mentioned ecosa (hadn’t heard of this one before) which seems to have some decent ones too. the other sofa bed i was really considering was the “omhu teddy” but i didn’t like that it is always on the floor. i was looking for something somewhat plain, with subtle style. something that looked cohesive. my main goals were also for a sofa, a bed, occasional nap, and something that looks good on camera for youtube; some textures can have that vibrating effect (i.e., a close striped shirt goes nuts on camera). and the last big one, was something that was easy to move by not requiring tools, and was not super heavy if i needed to move it by myself. with all that in mind, that’s what really had my attention with the koala sofa bed specifically the paper bark color. the arms were wide enough with round edges, the pillows have this light and airy look the way they flow over the sides, and the way they stitched the seam in the center makes it look more like a regular sofa. so for you, i think the koala would work well for what you’re looking for. the one thing worth mentioning is someone commented that it is somewhat uncomfortable for back sleepers. i’m a side sleeper so I could only speak to that in my video, but the good thing is that they have a good trial period so you have plenty of time to test it out and confirm it fits your needs. hope this helps! PS the follow up review for this is the next video i'm filming.
@@jim27105 thank you! yes, definitely a culture shock. and yes, i’m very much enjoying it here. the city is beautiful, and the walkability is great compared to st. louis.
@@Dogsnark were you priced out of the city from rent prices? after seeing prices in st. louis slowly go up, i'm sure they have sky rocketed here over the years.
hey, it’s working great! yes, it’s still just like the day i got it. this weekend will actually be exactly 2 months since using it for a full time sofa and bed. i’m planning to film my next video this weekend, which will be the first follow up review for this. i’ll go through the sofa in more detail, maintenance routine, and address some common questions i have seen on this video.
@@CheviPB material is holding up well, and i have been using the sofa a lot; besides my office chair, it's my only piece of furniture for sitting (and sleeping). i have not noticed any pilling.
thank you! i believe it can, but it also depends on the size of the 3 people on the sofa. koala lists it on their website as a 3-seater. i haven’t had 3 people on it at once yet, but sitting on it by myself (especially if i take the side pillows off) there seems to be enough room. that’s a great question though and this is something i’ll work into my follow up review video. i bought this version mostly to be able to lay down comfortably when watching a show/movie. if that’s a priority for you and you’ll constantly have 3 people on it, in my opinion you may want to look for something a little bigger such as their “byron” sofa (which someone else did a youtube review on) or something else entirely.
Heyyy I love your reviews !! I am thinking about doing the purchase but I’d like to know if you have any feedback now that you have been using the mattress for 2 months… please help!
agreed, they are pretty expensive when you consider the cost of a mattress too. there were a few on amazon that had a similar style for a lot less money, but they either looked cheap or just didn’t look quite as aesthetically pleasing as the thuma. i was actually considering a twin to save room before getting the sofa, but the sofa bed was a bigger draw for me; queen bed when you need it, small sofa when you don’t. do you have a twin for a smaller apartment?
to me minimalism isn’t about price. it’s about the value it brings to your life, depending on your needs, style, etc. that can be something that isn’t expensive, super expensive, or somewhere in-between. i’ll happily pay more for something if it brings me value and is both form and function. so it really comes down to what your needs are for whatever the item is; the price is subjective. however, a futon is different from a sofa bed and are also typically cheaper. if you look at ikea sofa beds they can get pricey too.
TH-cam recommended this because i am a sucker for guys bare feet (thumbnail pic lol) but i am now in love with this couch. I only have about 45” of space/width in my apt for seating and it’d be great to find a smaller sofa bed option for this 😔. i iike this review anyhow. Great detail. He’s got a cool leg tatt and nice bare feet too btw 😊. Liked and subscribed!
haha well, thank you! i would say i'm surprised, but somehow you're not the first to comment about the bare feet. and there actually is this exact sofa that is 45" (EDIT *it’s actually 46*)and folds out to a bed as well. i just received it to my place today so i'll show it in my apartment tour video coming up (not my next video i release, but the video after that). appreciate the kind words, and for the support!
for a sofa bed i would say that’s average (based on my research) if you’re buying new. there are cheaper options out there, but no one has suggested something that’s cheaper and is actually comfortable to sleep on. you get what you pay for. do your research for what your needs are and maybe you’ll find you don’t need something at this price point. and you can also buy used (sites like FB marketplace) if you’re looking to save money, but just requires time to find a good deal and a trustworthy seller.
Absolutely! Trust me, I was in the same position before I purchased so I get it. I wished there was a review out there when I researching (but I’m glad it worked out), so I’m happy my review is helpful for others.
understandable. the height difference did take some getting used to. however, i will say there is something quite meditative about putting a little more effort into getting out of bed in the morning/going to bed at night. it’s a small difference, but i’ve noticed a positive effect in my life because of it. i would compare it to waking up and stretching in the morning before starting your day. it’s relaxing.
Agreed - at my age high beds are much more comfortable both to sleep in and get out of! But he is young and probably very agile so wouldn’t be a problem for him. My meditative time is in stripping the sheet and duvet to the end of the bed exposing the mattress, then opening the window to air all, having breakfast and then coming back and making the bed from scratch! I hate having a wrinkled bottom sheet so I’m not a person who just throws the duvet over the bed.
yeah i really thought it was going to be an issue at first, but i addressed this in my follow up review in more detail. i move the mattress up about a fist width away from the back and i don't feel the seam (as a side sleeper). even after 4 months it's still very comfortable.
everyone making rental studios must be using that vinyl floor color. I have a 500 sq ft studio. I was using a CordaRoy queen "beanbag" bed and frame. I downsized to a narrow twin futon on the floor. IKEA now has a sofa like this; but sofa base is stiff and sleeping position is the other way with feet on the hard base and head outwards. I don't think a mattress protector can wrap on the the IKEA sofa. I had a really cheap all-foam sofa like this in the mid-80's. Now everyone is asking for +$1,800 for single knock down furniture piece. Too much for me.
I will say that I spent $1,000 this year on a hammock stand but it is one that I can take camping and set up indoors. So the double usefulness value on that was what made me get it. Plus the stand maker is very active in our camping group and very responsive to questions about their new design. I can't beat that. So thinking about it, I've spent a good deal on camping hammocks and a stand was a value-added buy to my hobby. The downside is it takes up even more space than a bed frame. But setup and takedown time is about comparable to your sofa bed build. And I fall asleep very fast in a hammock, faster than I do on the floor. And that might be a thing from transferred noises from other apartments is less in the hammock due to being raised. Being on a futon on the floor in a cheap apartment building is not helpful to me. I got a very thin memory foam futon and didn't know enough about the straw mats so ended up with a thin rush grass mat. It all works enough and I donated the bed frame to Goodwill and still sit on the CordaRoys bag as a couch.
yeah that color seems to be common for apartment floors (it was in my other one too). $1800 is expensive, but some brands like koala are much better quality compared to others out there. but i understand that a sofa bed as a full time bed is not for everyone. it’s really geared for the person living in a smaller space that wants to save space, but i’m sure a regular smaller bed may work for others too (or a regular size bed if they are not concerned with the amount of space it takes up). really just offering my perspective because i figured it would connect with others who are facing a similar situation. at the end of the day, people need to find and use what works best for their lifestyle or alter this to fit their needs; others have mentioned they wanted a smaller sofa in their home office (or similar) to use as a guest bed.
as you age if you spend a lot of time on your feet, you will grow to appreciate your feet hanging off the bed for strengthening / not putting pressure on your ankles.
i haven’t heard of that before, but i have a desk job so I do a lot of sitting during the day. main form of movement is going to the gym regularly and walking outside.
😆 Hell yeah, I appreciate it! Maybe I'll get ya interested in the minimalism content because it really applies to so many things in life. It is one of the things that really changed how I live my life in every aspect; a shift to spending more time focusing on what brings you value and learn to not waste energy on what doesn't. Street Photography is something I'm still working on creating long form content for but I have some ideas that should be fun. And I have some more tattoos planned that I'm stoked for. This first year has really been about experimenting with topics I love in my daily life, and putting them out there to connect with like-minded people.
if that’s your conclusion, you seem to have missed the point of the video. the goal was to find something that looks good, is lightweight, comfortable as a sofa and as a bed, and easy to put together/breakdown (no tools) when moving to other apartments. a sofa bed with a dedicated mattress doesn’t automatically make it more comfortable, and it increases the overall weight of the sofa bed. but if you have a suggestion for a sofa bed that meets the parameters you set, i’m all ears. that may be helpful for someone else on here looking for that style of sofa bed.
i’ll say this, you’re dedicated to the feet theme. idk whether having the feet username with the profile pic makes me feel less or more comfortable 🤔 i appreciate the consistency.
i mean it's fabric so i didn't expect it to lay perfect all the time, but yes it may look somewhat wrinkled after unboxing. you'll get some of that lived in look after sitting for awhile, which i don't mind, but you could also steam it to get the wrinkles out if you want that look instead.
Better than being with people who leave foolish comments like this…maybe a relationship isn’t what he is seeking right. Maybe he is simply seeking peace of mind…which is perfectly fine and healthy.
@@JNS314 spot on, which is typically why i don’t put energy back into comments like these. but i recognize that maybe something is happening in their life that makes them leave a comment like this, so i don’t take it personally. however, this comment did make me laugh (even though i’m sure that wasn’t the intention). but you’re right, being single has brought me peace and the ability to focus entirely on my goals. i’ve learned from previous relationships that there was stuff i needed to work on, so being on my own has allowed me to do that. i don’t want to be single forever, but i’m in no rush.
All you need is yourself. It's nice if we can share life with someone but sometimes it just doesn't work that way and that's okay. In the end all we need is ourselves.
@@gigimunguia5136 i agree with half of that because being by yourself teaches so damn much about yourself. everyone should live on their own (preferably earlier on in life, something my parents always told me growing up) to be with their own thoughts, weirdness, etc. however, close family and friends have got me through some shit in life. at minimum, even one close friend or someone to talk to and/share things with, even if it’s sometimes just sharing silence together, goes a long way for your mental health.
so i understand if it's not something you like, but you gave absolutely no context as to why other than you think the price tag is too high. it's comments like this that make buying things online hard when doing research. so take an extra few minutes and explain to people why you don't like it. maybe tell them what you're use case was for buying it (sofa, occasional guest bed, full-time bed, etc.), is it too firm, did you not like the material, how long have you had it for, did you utilize the trial period, how was your experience with the koala customer service team, or so many other things that you could talk about.
Enjoyed seeing your hairy legs and backside view. Otherwise, I don't have anything constructive or complimentary to ssy about your video or the subject matter. Hopefully, your move to Seattle will turn out to be a happy and successful decision. Be well! P.S. The TH-cam algorithm goddess is a cruel mistress.
well the first bit of that wasn’t necessary to actually leave a comment about. and that’s okay, not everything has to be constructive/complimentary; i knew at least that much to be true with wanting to get into this whole youtube thing in the first place. it can be quite vulnerable at times to put yourself out there. but thank you, it very much has been a good decision. still adjusting but learning a lot in the process. i imagine it’s going to be one of those life decisions to look back on and be thankful i took the opportunity.
@Dingle1234 I'm certain that whatever is going on in my brain pales in comparison to any of your favorite memories of Dr. Lee mopping up the discharge from some oozing sac.

Some pretty wild comments in here. Internet anonymity really does a number on people. Thanks for the review man 🙂
appreciate it! 🙂 and agreed, it's unfortunately just part of putting yourself out there online; gives you thicker skin. but you meet/hear from a lot of cool people from all over on here too, and that to me is still fascinating that we have that kind of reach today.

@aterrainye Hurt people, hurt people; that's a really good way to put it. And absolutely, thank you for taking the time to watch 🙂
Yeah. I'm starting to hate TH-cam sponsored reviews. It's such a double edged sword.
Ecosa is another company that makes these 🖖🏼
@@SydneyDrums i think i saw someone else mention this brand too. this is one i haven't heard of before but it looks like they have some decent stuff too. thanks for the recommendation.
Would still be on the lookout for mold if you live in an area that gets humid in the summer- since you're directly on the floor.
for sure, that is definitely something i’ll still be on the lookout for since it’s my full-time bed. my impression from researching was that it would be less maintenance/risk than the shikibuton/floor futon, but I understand it’s still a possibility if not cared for properly. i’m going to do an update video 3 to 6 months in to review how well it is holding up.
Would a dehumidifier help with this?
@@xxwoman in theory. It would still be something you should keep an eye out for regardless.
The dehumidifier would be relying on proper airflow under the mattress and can only pull so much water in so much space.
So you'd have to be sure that it's large enough to handle your space and be checking regularly, at least for a while after starting to use it.
@@xxwoman good question but not sure because i don’t use one. maybe someone else will comment and/or has insights about that.
This is a very thoughtful and thorough review. Thank you!
you’re welcome!
Thank you for taking the time to make this video. I'm currently looking at sofa beds and it is incredibly overwhelming!
you’re welcome. and i feel ya on that! it’s frustrating. it’s like anything else online when in the research phase, you end up with analysis paralysis. one review says it’s the best, another says it’s complete garbage, and then you’re stuck in a loop.
maybe i can help based on the research i’ve done too; i looked at more sofa beds than i ever wanted to in my lifetime. what are the main things you’re wanting out of a sofa bed?
Hi! I'm looking for a couch.. which one did you end up getting?
Appreciate this honest, thorough review!
You’re welcome! Thanks for watching.
Thanks!
you’re welcome! so glad i could help your decision.
I would got this Sofa for my tiny Toronto Studio apartment then I could have had a 2 person dining table as my desk & eating next to my all in one 2 burner cooktop sink fridge unit with the Combi Wave™ 3 in 1 with the IKEA wardrobe
yeah it's so convenient for a studio space. really does leave you with a lot of room during the day when it's folded up.
@@flonought Thank you! Have you slept on a sofa bed with the metal frame? how does it compare? even with the crease and all?
@@TheRealvisionz Personally, I don’t like those. Usually I can feel the frame, they make the sofa in general much heavier (which is a bitch for moving), and usually there ends up being some kind of squeak. I can usually handle those at an Airbnb for a few nights, but there’s no way I would have one as a full time bed solution.
If you didn’t watch my follow up review, I linked it below. I go into more detail about the crease. I did start to notice it, but I show a quick and easy solution that eliminated the small discomfort I was having from that. The quick answer is I move the mattress up about a fist’s width away from the back of the sofa

@ Thanks for your input man it really helps
@@TheRealvisionz for sure, hit me up if you think of something else. I know that research phase is hell trying to find a good one
Guess I should've posted on the update video.
thanks for sharing, i appreciate the different perspective. i'm pretty minimal when it comes to things, but not sure i could/would want to do a hammock full time. i love a good sofa for lounging during the day so that would be hard to give up. i also like to stretch out when sleeping, so i feel like i would constantly be swinging or tossing/turning on a hammock.
i do agree with you about beds not being the only solution. everyone has different needs and/or preferences for how they sleep, so really depends on the person.
A murphy bed with a built in couch is a great solution for such spaces and you don't have to make the bed every night
true, and it’s a something i did research, but figured it would be kinda of a pain to move as they are heavier. and the process of making the bed is pretty minimal and it has become somewhat meditative for me in the morning and at night.
Murphy beds are much more expensive $3k.
I’m considering this for our office, where it’ll stay as a couch for the vast majority of the time - would love any thoughts on how it compares to other couches.
you’re welcome! it’s held up great. no, it stays in place. mattress is pretty firm as a sofa and bed, but comfortable and also helps for holding it’s shape; after 3 months it still looks brand new.
as for how it compares to others, not sure i can be of much help there because i’ve had leather sofas for the past several years so going back to fabric has been new for me. but from a design perspective, i really like how it looks compared to others i researched. the side pillows, rounded corners for the side arms, and the fact that it sits pretty low to the ground are things i noticed right away that i like.
but i also did a 2 month review on this and went into a little more detail if that helps:
th-cam.com/video/57JiAt_Y4EM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=1IkLy1jVHnsKZ5vW
This is such a helpful video and really well thought out! Thank you for sharing this with us. It really helps with my decision!
thanks so much. really glad it helped ya out!
I want to put one up for my guest/baby room but contemplating about if the fabric is washable or easy to clean? 😅
i’m breaking this down somewhat in my next video. in short, it seems easy enough to clean if you get a spill or something on it (not something i’ve had to deal with yet). the side pillows and the two back pillows can all be unzipped and washed, but the sofa itself can’t be.
is that one of your main goals for the sofa is having something that’s easy to clean/durable to spills, etc.?
Thanks for review, been debating on getting something similar.
Off topic though, u mentioned recently moving to Seattle. Would love to get ur take on being a new resident there coming from the Midwest; and mayb a video on u getting to know the area and vibe of the place. Ive considered moving to Seattle in the past but hear it can be different living there and meeting folks. Anyways, just a thought/request.

and for sure, i wrote down a topic similar to that for a video to potentially make so thanks for suggesting that and I'll keep that in mind for a future video.
it can be quite a big change and seem overwhelming to move to a new state, but i can tell you in short that it's worth it. really comes down to your willingness to put yourself out there, be open-minded, be comfortable doing things on your own at first (going to restaurants, coffee shops, parks, taking walks in the city, etc.) making it a point to introduce yourself to people.
if you have instagram, feel free to hit me up and I'd be happy to answer any specific questions you have about moving.

Would two people be able too sleep on that one? Would you consider that bed a full or a twin?
yes, two people can sleep on this. the dimensions for the bed are 61 wide by 79 long, which are about the dimensions for your standard queen size bed (those being 60 wide and 80 long).

hey, thank you! yes, i find it to be very comfortable. i’m a side sleeper, so i can only speak to that position. it’s been about a month of daily use and it still looks/feels great. i assume it will develop somewhat of a ‘lived in’ look over time.

Does it sleep warm or hot? Foam tends to be warmer and i prefer to sleep on a cooler surface and with fan on.
in my opinion it sleeps warm, but comfortably so. i don't think it's hot.
to give you an idea, my current apartment in seattle doesn't have a/c - which i found out is pretty common here - and is usually 78ish for temp; currently in summer sometimes in the low 80s. i sleep with a fan on (low to medium strength) and a sheet and I don't sweat.

Thanks man! Much more comfortable than I thought it would be. And definitely, it has saved so much space in the apartment. So glad I didn’t go with a mattress and frame.
A Murphy bed could be a good choice too, but I like the look of your sofa
agreed, i was thinking about that as well but the issue - at least while i do not own my place - is most of them are pretty heavy. if i bought my own place, that would make a lot more sense.
i really like this furniture builder/designer @gethandsdirty. she did a super cool murphy bed design for her place, and built it from scratch. i dropped the link below if you want to check it out.

Really considering buying one... 1 month in, any regrets? Would love to know if it's comfortable both as a couch and as a bed?
i still love it, no regrets. what's your goal with buying, are you getting it to use as a full-time bed too or more as just an extra bed in your place? and what kind of sleeper are you?
@@flonought Appreciate the response. We're looking for a sofa for the office room (mostly for solo tv watching) that can also turn into a 2nd bedroom when friends/family are visiting. I'd guess it would be used as a bed about 15 nights a year, but I absolutely hate the old-school metal bar pull out sleepers and wouldn't wish that on any of my guests.
Also interested to know which other similar sofabeds (burrow?) you considered and why you went with the koala
Very helpful thanks. Is this a 3 seater or 2.5 seater?
you’re welcome. it’s the 70” (3-seater).
Nice review. Hope you’re enjoying Seattle (my hometown) I bet it was a bit of culture shock compared to St Louis
@@jim27105 thank you! yes, definitely a culture shock. and yes, i’m very much enjoying it here. the city is beautiful, and the walkability is great compared to st. louis.
I lived in Seattle until age 13. Great memories. I wish I could afford to live there again.
@@Dogsnark were you priced out of the city from rent prices? after seeing prices in st. louis slowly go up, i'm sure they have sky rocketed here over the years.
Hey a month in how does the bed work for you? Is it still firm ?
hey, it’s working great! yes, it’s still just like the day i got it. this weekend will actually be exactly 2 months since using it for a full time sofa and bed.
i’m planning to film my next video this weekend, which will be the first follow up review for this. i’ll go through the sofa in more detail, maintenance routine, and address some common questions i have seen on this video.
Wow thanks for ur quick response
@@CheviPB you’re welcome
@@flonought I have one more question … how is the material of the couch holding up ? Is it pilling ?
@@CheviPB material is holding up well, and i have been using the sofa a lot; besides my office chair, it's my only piece of furniture for sitting (and sleeping). i have not noticed any pilling.
Great video! i have one question, can it actually fit 3 people. After measuring it myself, i dont seem to be that big. And im a skinny guy!
thank you! i believe it can, but it also depends on the size of the 3 people on the sofa. koala lists it on their website as a 3-seater.
i haven’t had 3 people on it at once yet, but sitting on it by myself (especially if i take the side pillows off) there seems to be enough room. that’s a great question though and this is something i’ll work into my follow up review video. i bought this version mostly to be able to lay down comfortably when watching a show/movie.
if that’s a priority for you and you’ll constantly have 3 people on it, in my opinion you may want to look for something a little bigger such as their “byron” sofa (which someone else did a youtube review on) or something else entirely.
Heyyy I love your reviews !! I am thinking about doing the purchase but I’d like to know if you have any feedback now that you have been using the mattress for 2 months… please help!
i saw you comment on my newer review too so i'll respond to that one.
Thuma beds are very expensive!!! I have a twin bed!
agreed, they are pretty expensive when you consider the cost of a mattress too. there were a few on amazon that had a similar style for a lot less money, but they either looked cheap or just didn’t look quite as aesthetically pleasing as the thuma.
i was actually considering a twin to save room before getting the sofa, but the sofa bed was a bigger draw for me; queen bed when you need it, small sofa when you don’t.
do you have a twin for a smaller apartment?
Minimalism is pretty pricey. I wonder how big of a difference it is to an Ikea futon
to me minimalism isn’t about price. it’s about the value it brings to your life, depending on your needs, style, etc. that can be something that isn’t expensive, super expensive, or somewhere in-between. i’ll happily pay more for something if it brings me value and is both form and function.
so it really comes down to what your needs are for whatever the item is; the price is subjective. however, a futon is different from a sofa bed and are also typically cheaper. if you look at ikea sofa beds they can get pricey too.
He’s really cute. 😍

you’re welcome
@@flonought ha, well deserved bud and thanks for the heads up. Keep up the good work and have a great day!
Weirdo
Astronomical price!
in comparison to what?
I like it, but it’s expensive at $1,700.
$1,700??
Oh nooooooooo😮
for a sofa bed i would say that’s average (based on my research) if you’re buying new.
there are cheaper options out there, but no one has suggested something that’s cheaper and is actually comfortable to sleep on. you get what you pay for. do your research for what your needs are and maybe you’ll find you don’t need something at this price point.
and you can also buy used (sites like FB marketplace) if you’re looking to save money, but just requires time to find a good deal and a trustworthy seller.
Thank you so much! I have been trying to find a quality, comfortable solution for having overnight guests in my small apartment. Very helpful.
Absolutely! Trust me, I was in the same position before I purchased so I get it. I wished there was a review out there when I researching (but I’m glad it worked out), so I’m happy my review is helpful for others.
I prefer height to my beds. Easier to sit up and get out of the bed, instead of crawling out of it on all fours and than standing up.
understandable. the height difference did take some getting used to. however, i will say there is something quite meditative about putting a little more effort into getting out of bed in the morning/going to bed at night. it’s a small difference, but i’ve noticed a positive effect in my life because of it.
i would compare it to waking up and stretching in the morning before starting your day. it’s relaxing.
Less expensive than a Luonto sleeper sofa($3,000) but I did not like the ever so slight dip at the hip/low back area of this brand in your video.
yeah i really thought it was going to be an issue at first, but i addressed this in my follow up review in more detail. i move the mattress up about a fist width away from the back and i don't feel the seam (as a side sleeper). even after 4 months it's still very comfortable.
everyone making rental studios must be using that vinyl floor color.
I've never heard of hanging feet off the bed as an ankle strengthening thing.
Nice review! "creaky" voice drives me nuts.
thanks! and stop it, you’re too kind 😀

3 out of 4 is not bad, I think that’s enough for a sub 😂
😆 Hell yeah, I appreciate it! Maybe I'll get ya interested in the minimalism content because it really applies to so many things in life. It is one of the things that really changed how I live my life in every aspect; a shift to spending more time focusing on what brings you value and learn to not waste energy on what doesn't.
Street Photography is something I'm still working on creating long form content for but I have some ideas that should be fun. And I have some more tattoos planned that I'm stoked for.
This first year has really been about experimenting with topics I love in my daily life, and putting them out there to connect with like-minded people.
Over $1000 for a sofa bed that doesn’t even have a dedicated mattress separate from the couch cushions 😳
if that’s your conclusion, you seem to have missed the point of the video. the goal was to find something that looks good, is lightweight, comfortable as a sofa and as a bed, and easy to put together/breakdown (no tools) when moving to other apartments. a sofa bed with a dedicated mattress doesn’t automatically make it more comfortable, and it increases the overall weight of the sofa bed.
but if you have a suggestion for a sofa bed that meets the parameters you set, i’m all ears. that may be helpful for someone else on here looking for that style of sofa bed.
Koala was made for you.
😆 It feels like it. I couldn’t have found it at a better time for moving to this apartment.
Not on the floor because it's easy for spiders to crawl over you at night.
this is step one for becoming spider-man. now i just have to wait for one to bite 🤞
i like when you put your big feet up 😍
i’ll say this, you’re dedicated to the feet theme. idk whether having the feet username with the profile pic makes me feel less or more comfortable 🤔 i appreciate the consistency.
@@flonought definitely a compliment sir👍🏾
It looks wrinkled and worn due to being shipped compressed.
i mean it's fabric so i didn't expect it to lay perfect all the time, but yes it may look somewhat wrinkled after unboxing. you'll get some of that lived in look after sitting for awhile, which i don't mind, but you could also steam it to get the wrinkles out if you want that look instead.

Today we find out how to stay single forever....
😀
😍🦶🤤
🤷🏻♂️
This couch is terrible as a sofa and even worse as a bed.. All for the privilage of $2k
so i understand if it's not something you like, but you gave absolutely no context as to why other than you think the price tag is too high. it's comments like this that make buying things online hard when doing research.
so take an extra few minutes and explain to people why you don't like it. maybe tell them what you're use case was for buying it (sofa, occasional guest bed, full-time bed, etc.), is it too firm, did you not like the material, how long have you had it for, did you utilize the trial period, how was your experience with the koala customer service team, or so many other things that you could talk about.
