  • I wanted to find out if you can exchange the Clan Large Pulse Lasers for the new Beam Lasers in a strong classic Clan laser vomit build like the Timber Wolf. On paper you can increase your damage on target at less effective cooling, but it may also increase your time exposed to enemy fire. Let's try it out and talk about our results! Enjoy!

MechWarrior Online is a free-to-play vehicular combat video game, officially launched during September 2013 by Piranha Games for Microsoft Windows. The game takes place within the larger #BattleTech universe. In MechWarrior: Online, players takes the role of a ""MechWarrior"" who pilots large bipedal combat vehicles known as BattleMechs (Mech for short). Players can customize their BattleMech with an array of weapons and equipment, and engage in 12 versus 12 battles, the outcome of which earns the players experience and c-bills for future BattleMech purchases and customization. There are currently seven game modes that involve protecting and attacking a single base (Assault), capturing and holding several points (Conquest), take and hold the center of the map (Domination), attacking a space defense system (Siege/Counter-Attack), protecting and attacking field bases with turrets and walls spread across the map (Incursion), and team death-match (Skirmish).

    TTB the great tenderizer of mechs. He has started to learn why we group with him, for all those tasty mech kill steals! Or maybe because he is brave enough to go left and hold the "W" button down like a real mech warrior.

    I've been experimenting with beam lasers these days and I found 2 weapon combinations that are maybe not the most effective, but great fun to play.
    1. Beams lasers and Gauss rIfles. They don't compete over your heat capacity and you don't have to lead your shots that much with Gauss, so you can stay on your target with the beams most of the time. But then again, you're probably better off with Gauss+ERLL...
    2. Beam lasers + tag + missiles. Put your tag in the same weapon group as the beam lasers so it helps locking the target for the missiles while you're shooting at it. Honestly, this was the only time I ever had fun with any kind of guided missiles in this game and the combo felt really cool, but it's kinda hit and miss. One problem I had when I was playing this with LRMs, I would get distracted too much by just lurming random targets indirectly instead of putting my beams to work. That way, you're super ineffective. You won't do as much damage as a dedicated LRM boat and your beams are just dead weight. This got way better when I switched to ATMs, cause they basically force you into line of sight. Streaks are similar, but I don't like streaks and I don't feel comfortable brawling with beam lasers.
    You can also combine beams with MGs (preferably LMGs) as they're both hitscan, but that's more something for lighter mechs I guess. There was one build that kinda worked with the Kodiak KDK-3, where I used LMGs to get my Gausses/HAGs into the higher mounted hardpoints and then put beam lasers in the arms. However, it kinda did nothing as I had to expose the whole mech anyway for the low mounted beam lasers. Also, there are way better builds for the Kodiak.

    I would say one of the advantages of beam lasers is its damage to heat ratio of 1.71 times conversion rate compared to 1.44 of large pulse or 1.67 of medium pulse, and when you are an energy boat having not only quick utilization of heat capabilities but also efficient conversion is what I think defines these builds

    I had a lot of luck running the Orion IIC with 3 beam lasers and an LB10. The only downside is often the LB10 misses unless the target is standing still or moving away/towards me. Still, great set up. Use beam lasers to strip the armor and then use the LB10 to crit components while dissipating heat.

    • @formdoggie5
      @formdoggie5 28 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @TTBprime it works great so long as you have the extra sinking for it.
      Will usually hit heat warning threshold right as the beams are about to hit their exponential threshold. The increased sinking then makes the cover wait time decrease as well, getting rid of the issue that combined lasers with beams has -- never letting you cool, because it forces it.

    • @foamyesque
      @foamyesque 28 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@formdoggie5 That was essentially my experience. Three beam lasers, ECM, 1x JJ, TC1, and every other spare ton straight into cooling, and you basically get maximum utility out of the ramp-up bar. You could potentially drop a sink or two for supplemental lasers or LMGs for some extra punch, but I don't think the heat balance works much beyond that, and I kind of like the simplicity of the one-click beamery.

    Maybe, beams would be more effective if they transfered heat onto the target, like plasma cannons or flamers do. That way, enemies can shoot back once or twice at your exposed mech, but after that, they have to seek cover. I still think the damage isn't really worth the risk and whenever I feel like using a staring weapon, I pick RACs cause enemies actually respect those and turn away most of the time.

    The other thing you lose out with when you use beam lasers over LPL is burst. The TBR is great with the burst to drill out components and cut firepower.
    If you need time to destroy the components, you risk getting an Alpha returned instead of half an Alpha

    • @formdoggie5
      @formdoggie5 28 วันที่ผ่านมา

      This is why you will win if you know how to snapshot and cover/twist.
      Beams win in DPS -- but lose hard on damage.
      This thing works better as a second tier support as a result, wheras the build youre talking about works better as a hard flanker/brawler.

    • @NinjaContravaniaManX
      @NinjaContravaniaManX 28 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I feel like beam lasers are the clanner answer to IS RACs, but a kinda underwhelming one. Both are staring weapons, but whenever I use RACs, enemies respect that and turn away. I guess they are more intimidating and create annoying screen shake/sound effects on impact. They certainly have a psychological component to them. Whenever I use beam lasers, enemies don't seem to care that much and happily shoot back at my exposed mech. It's like "oh great, there's this tickling pink beam showing me excatly where I have to aim my dual HAG40's at!" Next thing I know, I'm missing a side torso. Imho, the damage isn't really worth the risk and you're better of with regular/pulse lasers or PPCs.

    I've been doing this for a bit myself. It just makes sense. Often you may only get a 1 second burn before either you or the target are back into cover, and having some medium lasers in that 1 second of burn time, the beam lasers do the same damage as the er meds. So for most early game shots, where beams are not great, those medium lasers are a nice supplement.
    However, you put on far too many. Either pick one, DPS sustained fire, or large alpha poke. Not both, you cant have both, as your heat scale shows. Drop some of the ER meds, and replace with LMGs so that you can maintain the fire without overheating. If you cant maintain the dps, then large pulse is far superior.
