  • A few weeks ago I headed a long way out to go hunt some fish and randomly bumped into Karl as I was about to start my walk in. We decided to fish together for the day but we had NO IDEA what was in store for us...

    Alex the film is surreal in many respects. I’ve really enjoyed watching your entire catalogue of work. Well done!
    I bet it’s especially thrilling for Carl to have this footage of your day together. You filmed an extraordinary record worth archiving! I was impressed by your approach to share the water and fish together. Days like that can burn lasting memories into our album of life!

    Love the vids. LOVE em. And I like it when you tell us the size from your weigh net. From time to time love to know the length as well. Since we Yanks typically talk about “trophy” size in length and Kiwis based on weight, knowing the dimensions brings your experiences even more to life. Watching you and your buddies fool, fight and land a 20”, 5 lb tank is a fun way to spend plane hours when I’m on the road. Thanks, mate. 🙌🏼💪🏼

    Mate, the quality of those fish was outstanding - stunning colours ready for spawning and that last one in particular was thick, thick. Great example of the wilderness fishing the central NI has to offer. But the key seems to be the ability to get a good drift through those big slow swirling sections that are very reminiscent of the upper Tongariro. The nymphs must be doing some weird stuff with the line almost stationary but the flies moving in the fastest bit of the current. Good skills. Nothing in the bouldery runs?

    • @TrippinOnTrout
      @TrippinOnTrout  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s all about a good, drag free drift bro. That’s why I’m a big fan of fishing with plenty of slack in the system so that the flies are free to drift around naturally.
      Didn’t find anything in the faster runs that day

    Somehow your videos get more sick as your release them! Awesome work man, that will be a day to remember.
    Can’t relate to the mindset of the one person who gave this a thumbs down.
    At 16:49 did you miss your line through a guide? Or is it a different type of rod. I’ve got a few rods and none are like that.
    As always thanks man!

      I didn’t miss a guide - I’m pretty sure it’s just a bit of slack in the system. You may have noticed I’m a big fan of plenty of slack when I’m fishing - it’s all about that drag free drift!!

    IF you don't mind me asking, were those migratory lake fish or year round in the river? If you don't want to say, that's totally cool. Spent a month in NZ last Feb-March, which I guess was a bit early for migratory lake bows to be running? At any rate, those Sonoma Cr. Cally rainbows do pretty well in NZ!

    • @TrippinOnTrout

    My highly scientific, if sliiightly under tested theory is that when an old, mossy, trophy sized trout somewhere in, I don't know, Italy or Poland dies, it goes to New Zealand to become even bigger ;) That would explain why where there are no trout over, I don't know, 3 or 4 pounds where I fish, while where you fish, there are no trout under that :)
    Tigh lines, man!

    • @TrippinOnTrout
      @TrippinOnTrout  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s a very logical theory....and seems like it’s probably correct😄

    Nice fish, good video except when you go to the Gopro and bend over and all we see is your tippet spools or a zipper. Music ruins it for me, rather hear the sounds of nature and river etc than that, constantly have to be on the volume to cut out the blaring music then miss out on the commentary.

    I think you do not represent NZ fishermen very well when you suggest they should fight or leave when there were hundreds of meters of river for the both of you to fish.

    • @TrippinOnTrout
      @TrippinOnTrout  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      In the backcountry a few hundred meters of water is nowhere near enough water for one person to fish in a day, let alone two! It’s very different here mate...some fisheries you will only find one fish every 500m or more.
      We had a chat and decided to fish together and had a great day. I think that represents exactly what to do in that situation
