    Pretty snaggy on the opposite bank. Biggest fish I hooked in my NZ trip was on a spring creek that looked like that in places. Big browns sure know how to snag line, wrap around roots and under boulders....making it all the more challenging to land them.

    Do you ever catch small fish over there? 🤣 I think the smallest fish I’ve seen you catch on your channel is a once a year type fish for me in the US. Was wondering if you catch them and just don’t show the clips or if there’s a reason or technique you only get into giants

    • @thor_6886
      @thor_6886 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hey Jase, as someone who fishes those same Lake Taupo tributaries that feature in Alex's winter vids, I can assure you that 2.5-4lb average, with very very occasional smaller fish, or big fish, is absolutely accurate. They are unique fisheries in that the fish are mostly migratory, heading up to spawn at the same ages. Hence the similar size. Very few small yearling fish which haven't dropped back to the lake to mature, and they normally sit in different spots to the migratory holding fish, so it's rare to hook them.
      Alex's summer vids like this repeat one are also accurate. Fewer, but typically bigger resident fish in the back country rivers. We're just blessed with the right environment for the trout introduced from US and UK to get large. But it's often hard sight fishing, particularly in the South Island. I would bet the depiction of size in vids like today's is realistic.

    • @LooneyLoon
      @LooneyLoon 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@thor_6886 Can you shed some light to another topic that I've noticed when watching these fishing videos from NZ: Do you ever fish or catch bigger fish on the white water sections or rapids of the rivers? Seems to me the fish are always in the deeper pools where the current is relatively slow. Is it because of the clear water and maybe the cool temperature of the water that the fish don't go to those spots? Or don't you just fish them?
      It kind of makes sense that bigger fish want to be in deep pools, but here in the Northern Europe it's not uncommon to catch big browns in the most rapid and foamy parts of the river. I've understood that they seek those places because of the more cooler water and bait fish. Is this not the case in NZ?

    • @jasegillette8880
      @jasegillette8880 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thor_6886 That is amazing. It's not that i didn't think it was accurate, just that I was wondering where all the smaller fish are. I didn't realize that these fish are migrating from lakes, which makes a lot more sense. Watching these videos is like a dream to me. The wild brown trout where i fish are almost all in very small mountain streams so catching anything over 17-20 inches is a massive fish for the size of the water. Thank you for the info

    • @TrippinOnTrout

      Summed it up there bro, thanks for chipping in here🤙

    • @thor_6886
      @thor_6886 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LooneyLoon Hi mate. Funnily enough, in the Taupo tributary rivers that you see in the winter vids of Alex and Gareth, almost all the fishing is done in typical deep 'holding' pools where the fish sit for shelter. But some big fish get caught in the fast rapids entering the pools too. Often big browns, which are also present in the Tongariro but way fewer than the rainbows (North American steelhead ancestry). Most people don't fish them, because it's easier to fish the pools and there are more fish sitting there, but some good fish sit in the pockets.
      As far as the summer backcountry fishing, Alex obviously likes his sight fishing, and that typically is in deeper pools. I think big browns are a bit territorial and they patrol a big deep pool, and it's obviously requires less energy than sitting in fast water, and they can also see nymphs and terrestrials coming easier in slower water. But you're absolutely right, particularly when the weather heats up and the more oxygenated water in the fast runs is so appealing for them, a lot of top anglers fish the rapids relatively blind. Fish sit in front of boulders etc. Also the 'eye' of the pool just beside where fast water enters. But drag can be a nightmare in that spot. The back country fishing here is quite unique I think. You'll have seen those vids Alex did in the South Island where he walked a long way between spotting fish. you could waste a lot of time fishing a nice looking rapid blind, when there are no fish in it! The populations are low, but they are BIG fish.
