I paid $99 for a brand new ghettobox exactly like the larger one shown here back around 2000 in a radio/appliance store in the ghetto bronx (about 5 miles from the bronx zoo). I left it when I moved from Long Island NY in 2011. I never used it once the shock value wore off. Indoor stereos sounded so much better, and I was not the kind of person to walk around carrying a boombox, so I had no use for it. It was very loud indeed at 100 watts and a total of 6 speakers, the large ones were 8" the mid's were 3-5 inch and the two tweeters were located on the top corners. It had 2 tape player / recorders and a 10 band graphic equalizer as well as FM/AM radio. I velcroed a cd player on the top and so I could play CD's with the unit. My father brought back a slightly smaller but better quality "Aiwa" from Japan around 1962/64, before the phrase ghetto boombox even existed. I once took it to school and everyone was amazed by it's large size.

Just a quick tip about getting locks with no key to them. There is a group of people who legally pick locks that they own. It is called Lock Sport. They often buy locks with no key to pick. You may not be able to sell the lock for very much money, but you can still sell them. It beats nothing.

I don't think the old man is odd. At his age, it's possible he wants to keep each transaction simple so he will not become confused during haggling. Concentrating on one item at a time or two items of the same type allows him to do that.

My dad used to talk about having one of those ghetto blaster he said is was really heavy and would have it on one shoulder while walking and listening to it the 70s seemed so different compared today all we get is Bluetooth speakers
The ghetto blaster as most people think of didn't came around until the early 1980s. There have always been portable transistor radios. In the early to mid 1970s, radios with 8-track players came out. When the quality of cassette tapes improved in the mid to late 1970s, radios with tape decks were introduced. In the very late 1970s and very early 1980s, there were radio, tape deck, 8-track players. These were the largest at this time. The ghetto blasters showed up in the early 1980s. What made them big and heavy was a vicious circle of louder bass and the ever larger amount of "D" size batteries to power them. The bass was needed for the type of music that was most often played on them which was early rap and breakdance beat music. This type of music was most often heard in the "ghetto" which is how they got their name. Other people just called them Boomboxes. Of course, this doesn't count the boomboxes that had built in TVs that came out in the 1980s.
"People are funny " Maybe not. The guy that was in 3 times in a day might live alone, be lonely or bored. Might just like chatting and being around people.
