I remember Scott Allen in 1987 when he could hit a wooden driver 295 yds. I used to work with Scott in 1985-86 when he was at Salem CC. Then he went to Kernwood. Scott is a fantastic guy.
Having played George Wright many times (more than 30), I can say it is a good course that is maintained in a so so manner. There are a few holes which are kinda clowny, but there are also a series of truly excellent holes that are on par with any hole at any course. Clowny holes: 16... (volcano holes are not interesting), 5 was designed as a pathing hole, but the ground fell wrong (so it's just a stupid hole now), 12... blind downhill shot which is not maintined properly.. Excellent Holes: No 2 (just a perfect use of the space and devilish short hole), 6-11 could be the best 6 hole stretch in MA (especially 10 and 11, which is the best two hole stretch anywhere I've played), 13 (best hole on the course).. The rest are fill in holes. But let's count them. Yes that is 8 of 18 are superb holes. 😊
My old home course. Any chance of re-creating the high left tee box on 6? It creates a semi blind tee shot where the green and pin are visually blocked by the oak trees down the left side.
We eliminated that tee box, as it was a gimickey tee built by Bill Flynns Golf Shops in the 1980's. It was not original to the courses design and made the hole an absurd blind dogleg.
George wright is a great track and the turnaround is incredible, but under no circumstances should it be mentioned in the same sentence as Torrey Pines or Bethpage Black. Those are major championship golf courses.
Just because a course holds a major does not make it a good golf course. Torrey will gouge non residents $400+, and is nothing special besides 1-2 “scenic” holes. Probably would not be memorable outside of a TW win in ‘08. GW is far and away a better value than Torrey
great video, let's get more of these showcasing local courses
He's a great pro for spending the time and giving thoughtful insights.
Good luck getting a tee time before four pm on weekend if you're not a member.
Can't believe I've never played here! I grew up on a Donald Ross course in Tyngsboro mass. This looks amazing for a mass public course.

I've played this course many times. I used to play n a golf tournament there every year. It is an average course.
