I grew up caddying at The Country Club and in 80’s and 90’s. We would play GW almost every day after looping. Went back for the first time in 20 plus years. They’ve done an amazing job fixing up the course. It truly is a gem.
Lenny and his crew have done too good a job restoring and maintaining George Wright. Place is so nice and so popular, it is nearly impossible to get a tee time now.
Worked in the pro shop at Franklin Park in 2001 and 2002 while in college. Franklin Park had already been renovated but this guy is correct in saying that GW was a total dog track back then. Kudos to what they have done at GW since that time. When I was at FP there was a men’s group of guys that used to maintain the first four holes back in the 80s when the city essentially abandoned the course. They gave them all honorary memberships and they played the course daily and had some great stories. Would be a great interview if any of those guys might still be around.
This place is one of the true Muni gems of the US. Right before the 22 Open at TCC a number of the folks competing that weekend hopped over to George Wright to play a round and you'll see evidence of their scoring in the course records on both 18Birdies and The Grint lifetime scoreboards. Pretty amazing that Boston has brought this course back to its absolute best self - so many incredible NE loops with unbelievably cool heritage.
Love this series! The stories that are told are a great history of these courses and the personalities that care so much about their job. You should check out Jeffersonville GC outside Philly for this series. Superintendent Rich Shilling has made that Donald Ross muni look and play like a country club. The recent renovations to bring it back to Ross’ vision are incredible. They are close to the 50,000 rounds a year and it looks pristine.
