Used to live down the block from Bethpage. I played this course in the 80s when it was banged up and you could get on any time you wanted, big rocks in the bunkers fairways were almost as much dirt as grass. Played it last year and sadly my last time. Its a young mans course walking it beat me up. Took me days to recover. walked off with a 89 with a 8 on 15. Green is my favorite course there.

I live 6/7 minutes from and agree with you on the Green. I have only played Black after they pumped millions into it but I have heard it used to be rough. Have to play 15 as a par 5 (5,10,11,12 as well)

5 minutes away from Bethpage. I never have and never will play the Black. I know I dont belong on it. I do however, play the other4 courses there. My favorite being the Red.
Not at all an easy course in its own right.

Really glad I got to watch this. It brings back many memories of some very good golf and days when the Black Course just kicked your butt . I started playing the Black course when I was about 16. Played it into my 40’s when I moved my company out of Long Island NY. Back in the day we use to drive to the course at 11.00 or 12:00 midnight and sleep in your car to get an early tee time. They we’re called bakery tickets. Girlfriends and wives were not to happy with this arrangement but we were golf nuts and loved it. Thanks for the memories.

Being in the back lot at 3, 4 in the morning hanging around with all the guys was fun. Don't pull in to the wrong spot and don't piss off the guy handing out the bakery tickets

    • @mrgolfdogs
      @mrgolfdogs ปีที่แล้ว +2

Yes your are right we treated the guy that gave out the tickets with a lot of respect and fresh donuts. After coming back every week we became regulars and good friends with the ticket guy. It got to a point that only one guy had to be in the car all night instead of all 4 of us. The ticket guy would come by our car and say your other 3 guys are out picking up breakfast RIGHT. And of coarse the one guy in the car would say sure that’s where they are, wink wink. It was a great experience at the time. When I moved out of New York and joined a nice private country club I would tell my new friends about the Beth Page Black course and how tough it was I think only a few guys believed me.

Edit: That birdie on 14 was nice.
Edit 2: Just wanted to share a quick story: Everyone always said my uncle was a great golfer. In the past few weeks I have been spending a lot of time with him because he was sick. Around the 37:30 mark, where he chops it out of the lip of the bunker... the ball disappears into the rough a few yards in front of the bunker, then cut to his 4th shot and its sitting up, in plain view... unsure about that one tbh. Maybe it was the angle of the camera on the 3rd shot, but it definitely looked like it sunk down under the rough, and there was no bounce. Js.

Now living in Fort Laudy FL, but born and bred NYC not 30 minutes from Bethpage, it’s so nostalgic seeing content like this !
Believe it or not growing up as a NY state resident I never paid more than $75 to play BP Black. Oh how spoiled I was having an all world, Tour & Majors used ( and upcoming 2025 Ryder Cup ) track to play pretty much on the regular and whenever I wanted.
Every year as the golf season came to a close, due to winter weather in the NorthEast, there was nothing like playing BP Black to measure where your game was. That track is a true & absolute golf barometer.
Now living in Florida for 10 years there are very very few things other than proper bagels & pizza that I miss about the GulaG that’s better known as New York.
Seeing content of Bethpage State Park, the national treasure it is with its 5 tracks, floods all of the greatest golf memories I have growing up there !!

I grew up about 15 mins away from here so I've played this course many times. Grant isn't just hyping it up for the cameras it really is a beast. The 15th hole plays about 20 yards longer than it looks on approach so most people come up short of the green, get swallowed up by the bunkers and end up making double or triple bogey and that's when you hit a good tee shot, I've played with friends who have made double digit scores on that hole and I have personally 4 putted that green. There are tons of huge fairway bunkers all over the course strategically placed to punish errant tee shots and the rough is so insanely thick, I've lost balls on drives only like 5-8 yards off the fairway. I'm a pretty decent player like a 4-5 handicap and my best score here ever was 82. I loved this video so much, all the courses at Bethpage hold a special place in my heart and to hear Grant say its the best course he's had on the channel is just so awesome.

    • @BrandonGavin_EDC

I can imagine man. I’d be honestly happy if I shot around 80 on a course like that and I play at a 4 handicap. I just don’t have the length off the tee to really shoot a great score at courses like that.

I'm 64 now and admit playing the Black many times (probably 30) and my best score is 100 (when I kept a full score card). The first time I ever walked this course was in the 2002 Open and I had not even played it yet. Length is important here and the fact that you MUST walk adds at least 10 shots alone for me. The greens are pure and you actually are relieved just to get there and make a putt. Add the wind you played in and it becomes a very difficult day. I enjoyed watching you play this course to see some of the same areas I've played into over the years only you recover well. My favorite round on the Black, by far, was when my neice came up from Florida and at age 13 she shot an 82. She was exhausted. (Thank you for the memory, Megan). Her Uncle Fred stopped scoring at the 12 hole... LOL

You don't see it on camera but there are serious elevation changes. #4, you go down from tee box and are climbing from 50 yards out the rest of the way. Green is probably 30-50 feet above that first 50 yards, and those cross bunkers are HUGE. #14 you go down 30 feet and then back up 30 to the green. #15 tee is 40 feet below 14 green and 15 green is 50 feet above tee level. #16 tee is 30 feet above #15 green, and 16 fairway is 60 feet below tee level. It's an endurance test. Also, on some of those 450+ par 4s, the fairway is 20-25 paces wide with 3-5 inch heavy rough after a 3' first cut. Given the bunker complexes, few par 4s can be reached from the rough. I only play the whites, and I'm super happy to break 90. I'm a 9.6 index, but my course handicap is 15.

I grew up close to Bethpage and have spent a lot of time playing the courses. Ive played the Black more times than I can remember. I was lucky enough to play the week after the 2002 Open and the pins were still in their sunday spot. I was friends with some local pro's and we were allowed to play from the back, back tee's...The ones from sunday. It was the hardest round of golf I have ever played. Thw rough was always long but they grew it out extra for the Open. If you hit it in the rough, it was like a one stroke penalty. When walking in the rough, you couldnt see the tops of your shoes. Finding you ball in the rough was a challenge. The fairways were half the width they normally were. On some holes, you had to carry 270 just to reach the fairway. If you couldnt you were in 2 foot high fescues. The greens are unbelieveavly tricky. Its impossible to go low unless you know the course well. There are very few birdie opportunities. You must keep the ball in the fairway. If its windy you must keep the ball below the tree line and look for spots to run the ball up onto the green. No carts are allowed on the black and ita a very long hilly walk...Its a real test! I still have my ball from that 2002 open setup round. Best public course in the world IMO....

Bethpage is my home course. Loved watching it through your perspective. The Red is also a great course -- it's got a better opener (it's on the left hand side of the shot at 0:26) and finisher than the Black, and its par 4s are extremely engaging.
One note: the Black plays as a par 71 (only one par 5 on the back), so your +3 is actually a 74 here.

I so enjoyed watching this video, I'm a lifetime Long Islander, raised in Hicksville and Moved to Massapequa and have been a lifelong Bethpage golf course player. When I was in High School and college (70's) we played the Black course all the time because it had the shortest wait time!!! No one wanted to torture themselves, it was harder then, than it is now in some respects. So much easier to lose balls because it wasn't nearly as manicured as it is now. I've Marshalled at 2 opens and the PGA, I love this course but ever since the opens its almost impossible to get a time,

I notice so many missing and that isnt 1/4 of the ones he that remembers. He says that it is in such better shape than it was 30-50 years ago. He has always told me that we are so lucky to have this place. I live on Long Island and have played this course at least 50 times as a scratch golfer. Making that walk back across the street to 15 in nerve recking. Last 4 holes are brutal. My coolest moment in golf is making a 2 on 18 and a bartender coming down with 4 beers there.

    • @bt2476
      @bt2476 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Awesome course indeed! But I don't know about the last 4 holes being "brutal". They're somewhat of a reprieve from the rest of it coming in. And that's probably where the course could be a better closer. YES, 15 up the hill is probably the toughest on the course, just a brute. But, 16, 17, and 18, are not too bad compared to the rest. Especially 18 is a rather benign close to a monster of a course, and is very "birdiable" for the pros :) From the 5th hole through the 13th, you pretty much want to cry. Then the 14th is that uncharacteristic short iron par 3, which is gettable. Then they throw the beast of a hole 15 at you. Fun experience to play Bethpage every single time!

    • @jasonandkathleenbarker6306

The walk is ridiculous. 16-18 may not be tough but after that 5 hour walk up and down hills you are out of energy.
And 17 green is very narrow, it’s like 20 feet deep and 70 feet wide. So it’s very difficult to hit the green.

No one is mentioning that this is the host of next year's Ryder Cup? That will be off-the-chain insane. But really, the difficulty on the Black is its length, terrain (greens are fairly flat though), and highly penal rough. And that includes 18 (which I admit is a disappointing end to a total beast), where it's a must to hit the fairway. I lived on LI the first 43 years of my life and only played it twice. The first was in July the year before Tiger won in '02, and it was 104 degrees and we teed off at 3:30! Finished in the dark, and about a dozen empty water bottles later. I was simply stunned at how beautiful the course is.

Rough was taller, easy to lose ball just off fairway. What a fantastic design, perfection, so challenging. Had to walk, old school 9 holes out, 9 back in. No carts and difficulty meant not busy during the week. It cost about $10, and that meant for the day! So I'd get second round for free. What a gem, tremendous memories. Amazing approach on 15. I play the course every year. I’m around 15 handicap, and my only hope is layup to the end of the fairway, then launch a wedge. Bogey is a victory.
Also, on 4, the upper fairway is almost 200 yards long. You can take any club you want to keep yourself safe from the “cliffs of Dover” bunker. The further you push it, the more green you have to work with.

I’ve played Black numerous times, and I’ve been in the same spot. The ball never sits up in the deep rough… This isn’t a camera angles thing. I still love watching Grant. His content is one of the best on YT.

10:01 - lie when balls lands. 10:16 - lie when ball is hit. Maybe in a sprinkler? Hmmmm.

Lived in Long Island when I started playing golf and within my 1st year of playing, I met some guys and we played Bethpage Red every Sat and Sun. Once every month, we would swap out from Red and play Black. I can honestly say, Bethpage turned me into the golfer I am today. Great playing.. Also you should note you played hole 6 as a par 5 and the pros play it as a par 4. You hit Driver / Driver and still had 60 yards to the green.. :)

Having played the course many times, I don't believe the full ball lies. Also, par is lower for the pros (6 plays as a par 4, not par 5).

How does the ball after bunker shot disappear in the rough but next shot it’s magically in a better lie?!

They all cheat, they're pretty open about it. None of these good good videos are real lies and what not. I'm actually surprised they even hit from bunkers.

Only 4 holes in but disappointed you went with lift and place for this round. Can't do that for national gems like Bethpage

Omg I’m 42 now but when I was in my early 20’s I was gifted the opportunity to play Bethpage Black one week before they closed Black for the U.S. Open. I was a good golfer, played on the golf team in HS, I shot a 105 😂😂😂 I was an -8 handicap and was CRUSHED by that cours

I believe it's a Par 71? The greens are flat but the problem is reading the subtle breaks. I've only played it twice but the first time was in July and a 104 degrees, a year before the first US Open there in 2002, and as a 5 handicap I shot a 74.... from the White tees. What a BEAST to walk. We must've drank 10 bottles of water each. It's crazy, and built in the early 1900's to boot. Tiger was the only one to finish under par that year. With a little course practice, and getting a good night's sleep, I have no doubt you would've made the cut in this video.

20+ years ago I shot 75 on the black course and still consider it one of the greatest rounds that I've ever played. Light rain for the first 3 holes. That place is special. Slept in the car over night to get our bakers tickets. The crazy things you'll do for golf.

I have only slept out twice. Once was right before the first Open (my buddy and his brother wanted to play in Open conditions, it was torture). The other time we had a friend in town that wanted to play Black and we didnt have a time. We drank, smoked pot and ate all night and maybe got 3 hours sleep, not a great day either.
I have gone another 15ish times around 4am to get an early walkup for black/Red
Any time that I play in the afternoon you see cars already lining up around 3pm

I've never seen your channel but this was a great video. My biggest takeaway here was your positive attitude. If I could remain positive like that after bad shots or bad breaks, I could definitely take a few strokes off my score.

I went to the 2009 US Open at Bethpage and sat at the 15th tee and watched that tee shot as well as the second shots coming into 16 and the tee shots for 17. Greatest spot I could ever sit to watch a US Open. When Tiger came through people were lined up on both sides of 15 with at least 10-15 deep on each side all the way up the entire hole. Good luck trying to calculate how many people that would be on a 480 yd hole that also goes 50 feet up hill for the second.

I played the Black course a couple of times in the late 90's. I remember shooting 114 on the first visit. If I remember correctly, I shot a 141 on my next visit. I still love Bethpage Black, even if it doesn't love me.
