This video is about my Dad. He had a long career in the military and then had two additional careers. He died in 2012 at the age of 90. He was in great health and had a sharp mind until the day he died. The Army produced some incredible men! He was loved!
Debra Erdmann Hi Debra! Yes, This is about my Dad - Richard Gilland. If you watch the film it features our family when we lived in Berlin. The Army changed our first names but yes it's us!!!! Thanks for watching! Susan
Good old fashion Army at its best. Times and traditions were different then even better than today in ways of caliber of the lifers who taught good things that mattered from long yrs learning and passing them on to the new soldiers. I had a company sgt. Who was a career lifer and I will never forget that man and what he lived and stood for. I consider myself fortunate to have know him.
I see that this was before the authorization of E-8 and E-9 in 1959...and that not a lot has changed in a First Sergeant's duties. The Signal Corps/USAAVC did a good job on this one in telling the Army's side.
The brave , dectated, hard, Changing soldiers of the U.S. Army. These words are never said in the narrated of any documentary. Compare how they narrated the marines vs the U.S Army
Retired 1SG. Best damn job I ever had. The BC and me worked well together and we trained a damn good Battery. I always believed that Diamonds are trump.
They shared guard duty with Soviet troops at the Spandau Prison where the Nazi war criminals were kept. I think Albert Speer was the last inmate there was released in the early 70's, I think. The prison closed after that.
They only filmed the best side of things back then. Only a few of these videos show the failures and rejects and given how they show some of the successful soldiers acting, I wouldn't be surprised if anyone who was fat or didn't "look the part" was just locked up or sent to the front lines. Remember, these were the draft days, you didn't volunteer to turn your life around and get better, you were FORCED to join or locked up.
Ive always wondered if movies like this were propaganda or we were really that squared away at some point. I grew up glued to the army. Found it a big disappointment when I was old enough to join. Turned out to be more of a shit show than I expected.
Sadly always propaganda. Though at least one commenter claims this was their father so part of it is real, but when you see commentors claiming "Times were so much better back then" that's proof the propaganda worked, as they're not showing the whole picture and the parts they do show sometimes make you seriously question the maturity of the soldiers or if it's just an excuse for men to treat women like property and be proud of that. That said, the REAL benefit of the military is what YOU get out of it. not so much being trained to accept being target practice like these films claim, but actually developing skills and being paid to do so, so when you return to the real world, you're much stronger and more confident. Many of my coworkers are former military and they're among some of the nicest people I've ever met. The braggarts who act like the military is about being abusive and the right to turn people into targets though... that's not discipline, that's fodder... (or they had a "Friend" in congress who gave them a few badge boosts). you don't go through bootcamp being an elitist....anymore....
This video was filmed after July 26, 1948, when President Harry Truman signed Executive Order 9981, creating the President's Committee on Equality of Treatment and Opportunity in the Armed Services. The order mandated the desegregation of the U.S. military. Sounds like social programming to me. Also CRT is only taught in law schools in the USA, so stop the fear-mongering.
You don't realize this is exactly what they were doing with these films...using the military to reprogram. None of this stuff is new buddy. Yes, I like these films. They are still marketing campaigns with an intended perspective to push.
Well there ARE black seargents.... in fact the military was one of the only places where blacks were treated "better" and that was because they needed ALL hands on deck, but many Europeans still questioned why Black soldiers were sometimes treated worse on the field than the actual enemies. and when they got home, many black soldiers didn't get Veteran benefits for thier services while whites generally got them for thier whole families, even those who didn't serve at all. The fact that whites keep decrying "Critical Race Theory" as an excuse to dismantle teaching those things our GRANDPARENTS LIVED THROUGH is proof of how institutionalized racism really was. Hollywood just isn't able to pretend it didn't exist anymore. Our ancestors are still alive you know.
I don’t understand why the Red Cross would be involved in getting soldiers stationed in Berlin to the USA in the event of serious illness or tragedy back home. 13:15
I have to disagree with the narration, Msgt Queen said of the American military “the greatest fighting team in the world” if the definition of “greatest” is the “largest” then, at the time of this film, then that might be true, I am not sure and I don’t really feel like Googling the answer, but, if it meant, and I strongly suggest that is how it should be defined, as the “best” I really can’t agree, and yes I know this is propaganda film aimed at the American civilian population, as I believe that the only way to tell who is the “greatest” is by combat, something that we all hope doesn’t happen, and as was said in the film “The Dirty Dozen” “their very pretty, but can they fight”, a very true analogy, every military force, from any country, would and does, believe their military is the greatest on earth, but as most men would say “it’s not what you’ve got, it’s how you use it that counts”. Every military formation has different, but equally valid, ways of doing things, so again, no comparison possible unless they are in combat, I don’t believe in throwing men into combat like “cannon fodder”, sometimes the small specialist unit can achieve what a whole battalion couldn’t, so, no comparison would be valid. Thanks for sharing this interesting and informative documentary, and entertaining, I enjoyed comparing the United States military with my own countries military. 😀👍🇬🇧🏴

What an awesome tribute to your dad. The U.S. Army was the strongest fighting force the world has ever seen. Great men and women 🇺🇸
OH WOW THAT'S AWESOME
Good old fashion Army at its best. First Sergeants are the true backbone of the Army. This one appears to be nothing less. His men were lucky to have him.
The good ole days when you could find an ashtray on your CO's desk :)

Wow these soldiers are really well polished in terms of training. God Bless you all soldiers.
We’re a show unit. This month it’s Cabaret. Next month, Pippin. Tickets on sale now!!
This is awesome!!!! Great upload. Thanks!
Loved being a First Sergeant more than being a Sergeant Major 🫡
First sergeants are the top of enlisted food chain.
Sergeant Major or Master Sergeant.
23:30 - Lol, I love how these infantrymen are storming the hilltop at the pace of a nonchalant, casual stroll, sure adds realism to the exercises. ;-D
I think it was arranged for filming. A lot of old films are like that. They're idealized representations rather than hard reality.
I miss doing this.
thank you

Diamonds are Trump, three times a 1SG
Before the Berlin Airlift, so I never knew we shared guard duty with the USSR military. So it wasn't yet divided up to East - West yet?
The Berlin was went up in 1961
They shared guard duty with Soviet troops at the Spandau Prison where the Nazi war criminals were kept. I think Albert Speer was the last inmate there was released in the early 70's, I think. The prison closed after that.
So , this how the army does business . interesting.
Getting ready for noooklar combat
Does anybody know what years the US Army had those Kepi's hats ?
The ridgeways were worn from the early 50s to early 60s
They went away in 1964.
not a fat one in the whole seris.
You didn't see a strip full of restaurants and fast food joints either.

Anyone else see a blunder at 7:29? The sergeant on the left has a Staff Sergeant rank on his right and Sergeant First Class on the left 😅😅😅

Pre "Critical Race Theory" and using the military as a social reprogramming venue. The good old days!

They do that today still. It's so guys who have immediate family who are sick or dying have the opportunity to see their loved ones.

Argentina kicked your arse in the Falklands . Saying otherwise is typical British propaganda.
