The United States Army is no exception, and with this in mind THE BIG PICTURE documents the new concept in this episode entitled "The Pentomic Army." As shown, the Army's modern fighting division today is lean and functional, simple in organization and efficient in performance, keeping pace with the many marvelous inventions at its disposal. The Pentomic Division, so named because it consists of five battle groups, is a semi-independent, self-contained fighting unit designed to operate effectively on an atomic battleground, should the need ever arise. As pointed out in this film presentation, today's Pentomic Division is characterized by the ability of fewer men to deliver a more devastating concentration of firepower on any would-be aggressor.
Damn. The presentation was so crisp, precise and theatrical. Better than the PowerPoint seminar style presentations we get today. I'd rather the cheesy style presentations of the '50s than the PowerPoint music videos that we get today.
How nobody has ever made a pseudo-horror videogame based on this concept is beyond me.
I remember my dad saying that when he was in the Army in the late '50s, early '60s, that they tested the M-14. Still had a lot of bugs to work out. They hated them, took them back to the armorer and demanded their M1 Garands back.
I mean who wouldn’t ? Though I would still prefer m14 over the plastic m16

YEP that was my army,well the Army that decided we needed to look like bus drivers. (Ike jackets in OD was a far better look). That being said I had to qualify with all weapons available such as the Thompson, grease gun M1 and Carbine.
I trained in AA with the 40MM and moved to the Niki and was involved with the development of the Hercules. THE GOOD OLE DAYS!
The Pentomic reorganization of infantry and airborne divisions was adopted by the U.S. Army between 1957 and 1963, a mere 6 years. So this episode of "The Big Picture" must have been produced _ca._ 1957.
It was Gen. Maxwell D. Taylor's concept that was formed at Pres. Eisenhower's instigation who wanted the U.S. Army to have a more modern, "charismatic" image in line with the more modern image of the U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force.
Its more like today's Brigade Combat Teams in a Division instead of 5 but 4.In WWII some Army units were organized as individual Regimental Combat Teams assigned to a Division or Army Group.Korea used RCTs and turned them into Combined Arms Teams into Task Forces.This concept goes back and forth as the face of combat changes as a means of flexibility of reorganization.

I served in the 3rd ID in Germany 61-63 and was leaving as plans to replace the Pentomic Dbeginning
From what I learned, apparently, the M3A1 was still issued to US Army and Marine tank crews well up until the mid 90's? It's last hurrah being the 1st Gulf War in '91
its true... it was mostly only still in older armored vehicles like USMC M60's and Army Combat Engineer Vehicles, etc, but even some Abrams units still had them in desert storm.. even stranger is how Delta Force apparently kept around suppressed M3A1s even after getting MP-5s as some in Delta preferred them, even having them fitted with thumb safeties..

I remember being in the ARNG in the 70s, we still had M3A1s in a mech FA battalion, for the crews and for the FDC.

Delta Force used some in the 1980 Iran hostage rescue mission.
13:34 ,the M14 was the shortest lived military rifle in US history, it did not replace the M3 or the M1 Carbine and was a 3rd class Light Machine gun (air cooled with no quickly replaceable barrel) . In reality It was a modernized M1 Garand and that is good. But it was not everything it was said to be.
Wheni was in the navy , they qualified me on the M-14.
Interesting concept; total failure in practice.
Relied on high mobility, yet the division had only enough transport to move a single battle group at a time, so the atomic age division was back to Napoleonic foot marching, and that through a predicted irradiated battlefield.
Fewer frontline combat troops had to cover greater frontages, making the battle groups ineffective in conventional combat and forcing them to rely on tactical nuclear weapons.
From platoon level up to division level, the dispersion meant that the overall unit commanders had insufficient C3 with the technology available to effectively fight their units, while the subunit commanders were overloaded.
Supply relied on helicopters and airdrops, which were insufficient to meet the division's requirements.
The whole idea of dispersed independent groups meant that there were huge areas within the division's ZOC which they did not actually control, allowing the enemy to easily surround and defeat individual groups which were too dispersed to support each other, had insufficient troops to cover their fronts, flanks, and rears, no reliable land supply, and had to use nukes danger close to defend themselves.
The concept could probably be executed quite well with modern technology, it was just ahead of it's time

Classic vid. Nastalsia green machine back in the day. Introduction of the M14, no mention of the M16 yet. Words like pentomic unheard of when I did my two yrs 1970-72.
Someone should recreate this video but using modern miliary equipment.

Yes during my time I remember many of these of showings and then wondered... And prepared as best as I could, as it shows the mindset during that period about to be revived once more...Peace!

The technology was not ready for it AT THAT TIME. Then! But it became ready in less than a decade. It was a great concept, with a lot of potential and a lot of ingenuity and revolutionary ideas. But which unfortunately, could not stand the Army's brass egos... LOL. They would not accept the fact that the Army would not play such an important role as it did previously in case a war with the Soviet Union had broken out. And for that they were ready to sacrifice this great idea and even support a war that only brought what is today referred to as the "middle ages" over their service. They hated the 1950s so I guess they loved the 1970s... LOL. When every single new weapons system was cancelled by the liberals in Congress and who used the Vietnam War to do that. The war THEY, the Army supported just to show that they were still just as relevant as they were in WWII. They weren't of course...

@@420JackG "Stale"? What does that mean? The concepts were actually revolutionary many of which are being used today. Like using drones to spot enemy positions and relay the info to artillery units to destroy them. I would say that is the very opposite of "stale" pal. There were/are only two categories of people who were/are against the "pentomic" division: the idiots from the Army who in reality wanted a multi-million men army with tens of thousands of tanks which was completely unsustainable economically but they were utter egomaniacal retards and 2: the Soviet Union's detractors who knew that this design would strengthen the US Army's nuclear power and would offer a much increased deterrent effect against the Soviet Union. These are the only 2 reasons and the only two categories of people who opposed this division design back then and who still speak ill about it today. Unfortunately for you you have no better argument than the word "stale" lol.
Pentomic was a disaster from which the Army never has and never will fully recover.

Anybody who listens, watches and most of all understand what this concept was about realizes just how revolutionary it was. It would've also transformed the US Army in a fighting force capable of fighting and defeating a much larger armed force due to the revolutions in concepts and technology of communications, long range firepower and mobility. No wonder that even today there are articles written and videos made about it that deride it... If the US had managed to carry out this development to its completion it would've be ended up with a ground fighting force unmatched by anybody else. But, a combination of stupidity and egomania and elements from the US who definitely did not want the US to obtain such a military capability worked hard to prevent it.... The worst part of course is that they got their way.

@@mikearmstrong8483 I think you better read my comment again... Even this video says that most of the equipment and hardware that was essential to make this division work did not exist at that time. The concept was not at all flawed, it simply was very far from being ready to deploy. Read my comment again and then remember to do that the next time you feel the urge to just rush ahead and slam replies to people lol.

The people who are always claiming that all military leaders and politicians are egotistical, ignorant, corrupt, or inept, are people who have never served in the military or public office, and know little about it.
What's your qualification to say that the professionals who did away with it didn't know as much as you do? Education from playing War Thunder I suppose?
I'm certain that the military higher ups who found the pentomic concept unsound knew more about doing their jobs than you do. Now instead of watching a single old army propaganda video, go look up some others that prove it didn't work.
And so it goes on. Fight light concepts on foot. And as it went on 5.56 is said to be obsolete and US is arming with that new Sig beast thats bigger than 7.62 fires further than Russian 7.2 x 54 R. Lighter and smaller is about $$ and never works in reality because bigger is needed. So in civillian terms you put 4ton on a 1 ton truck, it just breaks.
