  • RimWorld Part 1 - RimWorld Gameplay First Look Let's Play Playthrough - RimWorld Tips Tricks Walkthrough Guide
    -------
    About RimWorld:
    RimWorld is a sci-fi colony sim driven by an intelligent AI storyteller. Inspired by Dwarf Fortress, Firefly, and Dune.
    You begin with three survivors of a shipwreck on a distant world.
    - Manage colonists' moods, needs, wounds, and illnesses.
    - Fashion structures, weapons, and apparel from metal, wood, stone, cloth, or futuristic materials.
    - Tame and train cute pets, productive farm animals, and deadly attack beasts.
    - Watch colonists develop and break relationships with family members, lovers, and spouses.
    - Fight pirate raiders, hostile tribes, rampaging animals, giant tunneling insects and ancient killing machines.
    - Trade with passing ships and trade caravans.
    - Decorate your colony to make it into a pleasurable space.
    - Dig through snow, weather storms, and fight fires.
    - Capture refugees or prisoners and turn them to your side or sell them into slavery.
    - Discover a new generated world each time you play.
    - Build colonies in the desert, jungle, tundra, and more.
    - Learn to play easily with the help of an intelligent and unobtrusive AI tutor.
    RimWorld is a story generator. It’s designed to co-author tragic, twisted, and triumphant stories about imprisoned pirates, desperate colonists, starvation and survival. It works by controlling the “random” events that the world throws at you. Every thunderstorm, pirate raid, and traveling salesman is a card dealt into your story by the AI Storyteller. There are several storytellers to choose from. Randy Random does crazy stuff, Cassandra Classic goes for rising tension, and Phoebe Friendly just makes good things happen.
    Your colonists are not professional settlers - they’re crash-landed survivors from a passenger liner destroyed in orbit. You can end up with a nobleman, an accountant, and a housewife. You’ll acquire more colonists by capturing them in combat and turning them to your side, buying them from slave traders, or taking in refugees. So your colony will always be a motley crew.
    Each person’s background is tracked and affects how they play. A nobleman will be great at social skills (recruiting prisoners, negotiating trade prices), but refuse to do physical work. A farm oaf knows how to grow food by long experience, but cannot do research etc.
    The game generates a whole planet from pole to equator. You choose whether to land your crash pods in a cold northern tundra, a parched desert plain, a temperate forest, or a steaming equatorial jungle. Different areas have different animals, plants, diseases, temperatures, etc.
    People in RimWorld constantly observe their situation and surroundings in order to decide how to feel at any given moment. They respond to hunger and fatigue, witnessing death, disrespectfully unburied corpses, being wounded etc.

    You can disallow animal areas over crops to prevent them from eating your harvest like in 4:40

    • @morphman86
      @morphman86 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Or you can allow them to eat your crops, so you don't get animal starvation. A starving boomalope will only produce half the chemfuel (actually, the same amount but in twice the time). Not to mention the near 100% risk of miscarriage if pregnant.
      But yeah, maybe keep them away from the healroot, cotton and devilstrand.

      @@he3004 3 months since that comment and can't be arsed to rewatch the video to see the circumstances, but in most cases you won't have your boomalopes roaming free across the map. You'll have them confined to a certain area, to prevent them from being killed by raiders, stray bullets and predators.
      Grass is kinda limited, doesn't give nearly as much fill as proper food. The area they'll roam will be barren within a quadrum and it takes a year for it to regrow.

    Some other tip. Lets call it extreme optimization tips
    1: Have all bedrooms connect to communal rooms with vents to middle room. I Usually have 7 rooms flanking one larger communal room. Be it a workshop, or diner/rec room
    2: For a typical tempered climate i use 3 heaters and 2 coolers for every communal room to heat and cool them. Double insulate the outer wall. Put a high priority stockpile of wood near the heaters. This can heat/cool 7 small rooms and one large with only 3 heaters or 2 coolers. If its extreem heat or cold, or solar flair, just build a fire or two. This will heat all rooms. 4 of those units can be built together, with 4 communal rooms and 28 smaller rooms.
    3: But the heaters and coolers on separate grid with swiches. This allow the heaters to be put on 26 degree while the coolers can be put on 19, the bedroom temperature will drift to about 22-23C. This have the added benefit of making so the heaters con´t break during summer, and the coolers don´t break during winter. Halfing the use of component. It also reduce power consumption by 10%. Not much, but every bit helps.
    4: Stagger the heaters. Have one heater at 23, one at 24 and one at 25 (if you use Fahrenheit use dubble degree gaps), and put the coolers on 19 and 21 degrees. Now, when stagnering, its very important to have swiches, or they will fight each other. Why so warm/cold. Well this give you a few extra degree of margin if there is a power cut.
    5: Use multiple power grids. I use a system like this.
    A: "Always on" grid. With 3-4 batteries, and 2-3 power generator to be swich on. This is the grid the heaters/coolers are conected to. All the lamps and critical or low power consuming stuff. Like TV.
    B: "Gun turret grid". This really just need one solar panel, its also do with just one battery. But i usualy have one at 1/4 to the end of the killbox. In case of a power cable be taken out all turrets will still work.
    C: "Working day power": Only one battery, and how ever many solarpannels it needs. A hour or so after nightfall, all machines power of automatically.
    D: Grow light grid. One battery and 4 solar panels for every 2 grow lights.
    6: Don´t use Windturbines. They are pretty much useless in practical terms. With solarpanels you will get a fix amouont of energy every day. You know how much you get every day, so you know how much you will need to store every night:
    7: Put your kitchen next to a fertil soil spott. Try to grew on fertail soil as much as possible. Try to avoid hydroponics, they use a lot of power during nights. If there are some perfect spot around a sunlamp to put hydropinics, putting down a few is okay, but don´t run on hydroponcs alone. Running on fertil soil is much more power and component efficient.
    Put sunlamp and heater+cooler on a separate grid. Set the heater to 12C and the cooler to 28C. The battery will run out during night, but it don´t matter, just a hour before the sunlamps power on, the heater will heat the temperature up to 12C making the plants gain full grew speed. The Sunlamp might power of a hour earlier in winter, but this don´t mater much. You got year round growing for the price of of a few hundred steel and a few components
    8: Hay and hens are excellent. Don´t feed the hens with anything else then hay (if it not a emergency). Put the hens in the same room as the sunlamp and the hey. But put there zoon right untill the sunlamp diameter, but not onto it. Put the Hay stockpile right next to the zone. This will minmixing carying distance. While cows technically is more efficient, hens use less Labour. The Hay->Hen-> egg cycle is almost as efficient as growing rice or corn. Making fine meals as cheap as simple once.
    9: Neutriance past suspender is really large, but it also insulate Put it in a wall that need thick insluation anyway (like between the fridge and the kitchen out to the living space). This make the nutriance paste dispencer double up as wall Reducing the wasted space to just 2 squares.
    10: Dogs and kibble and pemican. Use dogs for hauling. It really cuts down on the hauling needs. Feed them Hay+Insect kibble, or if there is no insect egg/meat+rice pemacin. Because pemacin is 50% more efficent than kibble... But hay/insect meat is really cheap. Make sure that the dogs don´t get into the hen pen, then they will eat the eggs.. also, make sure they don´t go into the fridge.
    Dogs don´t eat rice/corn. So sort the every area in the fridge and kitchen to have only rice/corn or meat or meals, Then make sure that the dogs only are accessible tot he rice/corn tiles. Then they will carry, but not eat.
    11: Have two stoves, one electric and one wood. Set the electric to higher number than the wood one (say 20 fine meals on the electric and 10 on the wood). This way they will primarily use the electric once and just fall back on the wood one when there is a power cut or other issues.
    With this set up 1 cook can pretty much supply a collony of about 10 people and 10 dogs and 20 hens with food from root to finished meal with not much issues.. Of cause, having a second cook always recommended.

      Defenses change very much depending on if and what kind of mods you're running. Killboxes still work in vanilla even though sappers don't like them. The way the game is there is no right answer when you're setting up your defenses. I usually tend to wing it at start then slowly build a killbox. I've even mostly stopped using turrets especially in modded games.If you want some examples go through my let's plays, pick one of the last episodes in the series and you should see different defense setups that should give you some ideas.

    Ok, what am I missing? I just got done watching your 3 videos of 10 tips for beginner, intermediate and advanced and saw no mention of the apparently glorious nutrient paste dispenser which is so good and bad and good, it deserves a video series of it's own.
    When I started playing, I cooked because campfires. Later on, I started using it because it's easy. Eventually, I learned about mood and thought "you know, that -4 penalty for eating dog food is pretty bad.." so I went to cooked food and learned about dirty cooking environments and adapted to have my butcher table separate, locked my kitchen so no one came in or out when cooking, all the tricks to make cooking viable so I could get that sweet ate a fine meal small bonus with a minimal risk of food poisoning.
    That should sound pretty dam familiar, but what you're forgetting is all the down sides and all the up sides of the nutrient paste dispenser, and I'm convinced the pros (any of them) outweigh the cons (all of them).
    Cons:
    1. It is ugly and large. This one is the only one that matters, and only to self proclaimed ADD assholes who get all freaked out over lack of symmetry. I call this a pro, but we need at least one con I can't prove is completely irrelevant.
    2. It is a powered on demand feeder which can be disabled by many types of power problems. See #5 for why this doesn't matter.
    3. A -4 mood debuff that is permanent as long as you use this. You could argue it's -8 because you don't have the +4 ate a fine meal buff. See #6 for why this doesn't matter.
    Pros:
    1. (might be patched). To hell with fridges. Stuff in the hopper doesn't rot. Each dispenser can have 11 hoppers for storage.
    2. You can grow significantly less food since it takes (7 or 8, forgot which) ingredients for a meal, not 10, so less pawns farming, or more production plants being farmed. (edit, it's only 6 food per meal).
    3. No food poisoning, ever.
    4. It saves space by providing an early game corpse disposal (no graves). This does give the mood debuff for cannibalism, so only allow storage of human meat to the prisoner's nutrient paste machine. Unruly prisoners are a great source of all sorts of experience, so this could be a few stacked pros.
    5. You could argue this is a con, but it's not. Stockpiling nutrient past meals is a tedious manual job, so make pemmican for the times when the power is out. This kills #2 con, and as an added benefit, has you have plenty off great food to take on time sensitive caravans. If an event has something you want, you've got plenty of food for the trip to start right now. Making pemmican is cooking skill so's butchering, so you'll get more harvest from your human leather than if you didn't make pemmican and only relied on butchering for cooking skill.
    6. You can get started on art much earlier and that -4 ate dog food debuff will be countered, smashed, tac nuked, and otherwise obliterated by the beautiful environment from the statues you placed by the dog food dispenser and reinforced by more statues where they eat, sleep and work. Even your pacifist life lover who is terrified of corpses will be fine butchering people all day every day if you put a decent statue in the slaughterhouse. As long as the green numbers are bigger, you can have a lot of red numbers.
    7. As your colony grows in size, the work time savings increase giving you basically 2 free pawns by the time your colony has 14 members, but one of them should be an artist, so maybe only 1 free?
    I'm sure I'm missing stuff, but 6 solid pros and one possible vs 0 cons that matter at all to anyone except for those special few who should go hug a block of ballistics gel to save it from an early grave...

      Kokoplays MB So I actually did try some experimenting. Turns out it’s true: work speed for most tasks AND walking are both affected by levels of light. You can actually find the exact values by clicking on the little “i” on the bottom left when you select a colonist. If you scroll towards the bottom, you’ll see a line that says “global work speed” which will be 80% (as opposed to 100%) if your pawn is in complete darkness as opposed to being brightly lit. You can look at specific tasks like cooking and constructing and speeds for all of them, too.

    Here’s a question I can’t find an answer to, and maybe I’ve missed it across your videos… I know lighting makes pawns work slower, move slower etc….
    How does it affect shooting? When in the dark, pawns can’t see anything, so they have a lower chance to hit the shot. What about pawns being in well lit area, shooting at targets that are in a dark area? Are your pawns at the disadvantage that they can’t see the enemies in the dark, where the enemies are able to see the pawns who are in a well lit area? Or the other way around?

    • @KokoplaysMB
      @KokoplaysMB  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      When you're aiming at someone, with your pawn selected hover over the enemy. A tooltip will pop up in a sec telling you your chance to hit and what affects it.

    • @KokoplaysMB
      @KokoplaysMB  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depends on the biome, but it's one of those things I build when I either hit a cold snap or heat wave and I see people start having issues. Even then I mostly just fix the bedrooms/barracks and the main area where people spend the most time.
      That being said once I'm out of the early game I'll usually redesign my base and optimize temperature across the board.

      If you put simple turrets 3 tiles apart they're not gonna blow each other up. Also you can stack them up closer together if you put a wall between them as that will prevent the explosion to reaching the other turret. Just don't make the walls out of weak materials like wood. Granite or plasteel works best in vanilla.

    is this for 1.0? i just bought the game like a week ago but how do u only have one kill box area? i get raids from all 4 sides and sometimes the raiders will try to break in through the wall on other side instead of coming to the open kill box side.

    • @KokoplaysMB
      @KokoplaysMB  5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      It is for 1.0. Raiders will adapt to your killbox, send sappers that will go through walls and try to siege you from afar. Sometimes they will even drop right into your base from the space. Basically a killbox isn't a sure thing, a lot of the times you'll have to fight them in your bedrooms or go assault them out there in the open. You need to adapt to each situation.
      It used to be that every raider would just go for a killbox in the past, but over the years devs tried to hard to destroy the killbox tactics because it made the game more boring. Thusly we now have a ton of different types of raiders.

    Uh, I never got over 2 in game years (very new player), but isn't this base design extremely inefficient? I mean three tiles wide corridors, no shared walls, bedrooms are imho better when placed together for shared heating, dining room should imho share wall with freezer to allow food dispenser installation and I placed butcher table inside the "interlock" room and allowed storing fresh animal corpses in the freezer so they don't rot on sun. I build my base like this imgur.com/N3IVF6Q (2nd attempt, cassandra classic on 2nd easiest difficulty)

    • @KokoplaysMB
      @KokoplaysMB  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This base was build just a showcase for the tips, it didn't have any efficiency in mind. I've build all kinds of different bases playing on the highest difficulty, bases inside a mountain, bases without walls, basses spread over the whole map. It's a singleplayer, you don't need to minmax the game is not that difficult. And after a while you realize a good looking base matters more than an efficient base.

    • @pavelperina7629
      @pavelperina7629 3 ปีที่แล้ว
