Excellent video. It's often mentioned how DMC started development as a RE title, but I've never heard anyone talk about that process as extensively and passionately as this.

Personally I wouldn't like that, just for the fact the original still in my book holds up today, yes you can argue the camera is shitty but personally never had issues with it, and ofcourse the gameplay is very slow and hasn't much to offer but the simplicity is what I like about it, compared to DMC 4 and 5 there's just too much going on, fast combat, tons of combos to memorize and a lot of different weapons you need to master and probably only use once, you pick a favorite style and run with it same with the style modes. For me personally too much, and ofcourse I am getting older too, I mean I was 19 when the first DMC came out. And if there would be a remake someday and I think it will since DMC 5 had a lot of throwbacks to the first game, I'm afraid it'll be just like DMC 5. Let it rest in history, not everything needs to get a remake, but that seems to be the most popular thing in videogames right now, probably because the lack of creativity it's much easier to remake a game as to write a new story, new gameplay elements, new engine etc. Its a masterpiece as it is.

I thought about this and after playing RE4's remake I don't think I'd want that. Not because RE4's is bad. It's pretty damn good, actually, but the game doesn't have the same feel or spirit as the original. It's a great game but it is definitely its own separate entity. DMC1 is such a unique game that none of its sequels are like it, at all. Not even Bayonetta has the same tone, atmosphere or spirit. A remake of DMC1 would be just like DMC5 and I don't want that. Dante himself is nothing like the way they portray him in all the other DMC games and something unique would be lost in the name of appealing to as large an audience as possible.

Glad you enjoyed it! Yes, I agree of course. The world of DMC1 is so interesting as a result of its unique development cycle... I wish we could get another game like it. 5?? I think 5 had the worst setting, or at least the way they handled it was very bad, Redgrave City was an interesting premise, but they just let you explore the city for a little while before throwing you in the sewers and then going to the Qliphoth tree, which is by far the blandest and tasteless location of the game yet is the one we spend more time in.

Just one small correction: Kamiya left Capcom in 2006, not after development of DMC1. After DMC1, he directed Viewtiful Joe under the Capcom studio Clover, a game that even featured Dante and Trish as unlockables as well as Alastor, the electric sword, being a character. And last but not least, Kamiya directed Okami, one of Capcom's masterpieces, shortly before the Clover studio shut down and he left Capcom alongside Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami.
Mikami went on to establish Tango Gameworks with The Evil Within (which references RE and the RE4 remake in turn references TEW).

I've been looking for a video like this. At last, someone actually gives this game its proper dues! its visual narrative and incredible track are still outstanding. I remember just taking out enemies and just spending a few extra minutes looking at the environment, trying to piece together what might've happened there. The world just feels LIVED in and dimensional. I wish the DMC fandom would stop treating DMC1 like a step-child of its own damn series. Nothing annoyed me more than witnessing the second wave of DMC fans literally take over the fandom after DMC3's release and shove DMC1 into a back corner. And it's only gotten worse with each entry after DMC3, because now it's super rare to find videos like this. DMC1 deserves more respect than that. You would never see this happen in the RE fandom with RE1. Even before it got its remake, fans acknowledged its importance. Despite its tank controls and outdated graphics and horrible dialogue, the veteran AND new fans didn't ignore it in favor of the more popular RE4. Same could be said for Silent Hill 1. SH2 might's blown people's minds, but you still had a good chunk of the SH community acknowledge SH1 and respect. Yet, for whatever damn reason, DMC1 gets ignored by current day fandom. It seems the ONLY person who remembered and wanted to give it its dues was Itsuno himself with DMC5, which draws heavily from DMC1's narrative. It just sucks because there is A LOT this game has going on that still hold up today. And the soundtrack is incredible (with the track names being absolutely hilarious lol). You could tell this was a labor of love by Team Devil.

I heard that DMC started as a Resident Evil game before, but always thought that they switched gears very early in the development, it's really cool to see how deep the Resident Evil roots go.
Talking about the environment design and its storytelling, I also hope that they bring some of it back into the new games if there is going to be more.
But I highly doubt it will happen :( The environments in DMC5 were very forgettable, it didn't even feel like there was an attempt to make anything special. And it was disappointing to see how the 4th game had an interesting idea of a modern world mixed with a gothic style and religious focus, only to be dropped in the sequel.
    Great video!

This game is amazing and the risks they took with it would never be done in a current-day IP.
Hearing about the trip to the castles, it was clear why the castle in DMC1 and RE4 were better realized than the ones in 3D Castlevania titles. I always felt like DMC1 was like a hybrid of RE and Castlevania, gothic and classy but still modern.
Those concept arts of the environment feel like they belong on a museum.

I actually think I know what the fourth game was originally supposed to be shown as I think it was supposed to be shown as onimusha Warlords because at one point the developers behind Resident Evil 4 wanted to see what it would be like to put zombies and the feudal era of Japan and have samurais actually fight their way through zombies and you know your potential monsters like bosses that would be the much more bigger enemies what you do see in onimusha Warlords is the very same concept very similar to how Resident Evil would have played out if they didn't like that well and they made one that took place during Japan's funeral era but instead we got the Gemma that were a clan of demons that were both lower rank demons and then you know your typical higher rank and this is actually something that's been talked about and you can actually look this up

Devil May Cry is a weird mix of acton game and horror, the atmosphere its really dark and so are the enemies, even though all entries feature demons, the first game has the most terrifying ones imho even when at a technical disadvantage compared to newer entries.

The combat felt realistic, impactful and badass in dmc1. Now it feels twitchy and clownish.

Still my favourite DMC game. In Itsuno’s games, Dante could be compared to Spiderman whereas in DMC 1, he was much more like Batman… And I’ve always preferred Batman XD.

Fantastic video covering this timeless classic!
Unfortunately, I highly doubt the series will return back to the it's atmospheric roots as the new director of the series, Hideaki Itsuno, has primary experience in designing fighting games.
This of course made DMC3 gameplay mechanics near impeccable, but DMC5 proves that the story, environment, characterization barely had cohesion between each other and were mostly secondary in priority for the game overall.

I still hold some hope, considering that they used the RE engine for the game (tho they also used it for SF6, so maybe is not that deep lol)

Definitely my all time favorite game next to Doom, I was mindblown when this came out, never seen such a high action packed game at the time. Great visuals, dark gothic architecture, very well designed enemies and variety such a masterpiece, the other games in the franchise didn't do much for me, 3 was very good though brought back some of the art direction of the first game in the Temin Ni Gru. But Dante himself went from a serious cool dude to a class clown, and I know its chronically before DMC1 but still didn't like has attitude nor his voice actor, Drew Coombs will always be the true Dante for me.

So Leon was supposed to be the main character from the beginning or they always intended to be Tony Redgrave?
If this idea of playing as Spencer son already existed in the initial stages with Leon than his real name would be Leon Spencer Kennedy (!)

I know Drew Combs lines are very wooden and cheesy. But I actually like it more than 3. But DMC always had very little story lore in it. Like if people actually think demons exist or what happened to those living in the city during 3.

While it would be super cool to see a 6th Devil May Cry game. I want to see a Remade from the Ground Up Devil May Cry 2! It’s a Shameful entry, yet without it we wouldn’t have gotten the Stylish Gun Slinging Powers Dante would have for his “Style” system in DMC3, nor would we have gotten weapon Switching!
Still, the Old DMC2 just feels like a Mistake, and no matter how it’s justified, the game is a Slog! Dante and Lucia are unfun to play, they don’t have any of the Badass weapons/Devil Arms that would compliment their play style. And honestly I would love for Lucia to have her own set of Devil Arms to use. Like Combat Demon Greaves or Whatever g-Like Devil Arms she could use and detach to turn into swords and what-not. Her Throwing Daggers were nice, but a Demonic Crossbow or some other weapon would’ve been a neat change of pace for her gameplay!

I don't think it has to do with the Devil arms, in most DMC games I go around using the regular sword throughout the whole thing, the problem with DMC2 is that it's so hard to strike a combo because the enemies die too fast and get sent too far away by every attack, it drives the fun out of the combat

23:00 you should avoid the pal ps2 version. This game and onimusha warlords both have terrible pal ports.

I liked DMC 3, 4 was so bland. DmC is my second favorite, and the 5th one was really good and enjoyable. V is my favorite character. But! Devil May Cry 1 is so so good and the original Dante to me is the true Dante. They butchered his personality so bad and who he really was as the games went on. Only Hideki Kamiya was able to design his true tough but sarcastic personality, not some clown, wearing cowboy boots and riding rockets like he was a cartoon character.

DMC4 had some definite development pains in that transition to HD, it's a miracle it turned out as well as it did. It's not one of my faves either, but a mid DMC is still quite good in my eyes :)

I disagree with you about DMC4 being bland, I really liked it's more angelical and sacred environments in contrast to the previous games with more darker and gothic environments, but I will agree that the game has the second worst version of Dante ever (nothing is worst than DmC tbh)
