  • I Review a Chevy 2500 HD with the 6.6L GAS L8T v8 engine as a Heavy Duty mechanic. I discuss the advantages of the new 6.6L gas engine from GM and then compare this engine to the F250 super duty 7.3L Godzilla engine when it comes to towing ability . Finally I give my conclusion as a mechanic whether or not the 6.6L L8T is a good towing engine.

I like how simple GM kept this engine. it's really nothing fancy and is just a push rod v8. I like that GM has extended the stroke of this LT engine giving the 6.6L gas an easier time producing torque and producing it much sooner in the rpm band which is exactly what you want out of a work truck. this added stroke is great when we talk about towing and definitely helped this truck and engine when pulling my 14,000lbs trailer.
right off the bat this trucks comes with a 6 speed transmission and it showed it's weakness when towing and pulling hills on my towing course. it did not allow the truck to drop into higher RPM's to really keep those wheels turning and this resulted in the truck dropping speed.
the 7.3L engine in the F-250's on the other hand with the 10 speed tranmission just seem to have a better ability to keep speeds going up hills at speed without loosing speed.
the 6.6L l8t gas engine has some good power in it and will serve many people just fine but when it comes purely to towing performance the engine just didn't match up to the 7.3L godzilla.
but in terms of reliable and longetivity this is where the 6.6L gas engine shines. a major advantage of this engine is that is does have active fuel management or dynamic fuel management (AFM/DFM) and this is going to make these engine pretty strong units.
GM when back to the drawing board and build a tried and true simple V8 engine that has been proven to be strong, powerful and take abuse. so this engine as work engine is a perfect unit.
people have alot complained about the poor fuel economy of this engine and I have to say when towing it was actually pretty efficient, which I was not expecting. the MPG's where much higher then the 7.3 from ford so it does seem to be more efficient when towing.
Anyways Guys I hoped you liked the video!

When GM Did the redesign and drop the 410 option and added a 3.42 option I knew things were going the wrong way especially when they keep going to taller and taller tires. General motors is basically saying if you wanna pull north of 12 k with a gas engine, don’t buy ours . I may be nitpicking here, but it’s not fair to even talk about fuel economy when the truck isnt keeping up with the other truck The only way to compare them is to have the faster truck ollow the slower truck Because it takes horsepower for the 7.3 to go up the hills 5 to 7 miles an hour faster. This thing may be good on fuel in part because the cruise control does not follow the speed very well in the Transmission stays too high of a year. same thing happened last year on the other toe channel. They tried comparing the fuel economy or something that made it up in 8 1/2 minutes to something that made it up at 11 1/2 you cannot compare the two. This was a good test I’d really like to see something more suitable for the heavier trucks while the load you used was fine for the half tons. How about a big fifth wheel with a large frontal area something realistic? No one pulls low loads like yours they’re not that common. Personal use of those trucks is mostly for RVs, I think this truck would suffer even more with a big fifth wheel same amount of weight, of course, The lack of power and poor gear choices would be very apparent since the air pushing characteristics of the RV put more of a strain on the tow vehicle.

I’m not a fan of any gm product..that being said towing is not a race. Iv got 2 million miles of experience doing it. It’s about being able to do it every time as efficiently as possible. Semi trucks lose speed on every large hill but they do it for millions of miles a year. Anyone who thinks towing is a race or pulls at 80 mph just shows me they have little experience.

I traded my 2020 7.3 for a 2023 6.6 and i tow daily. Not 14k but 7-10k and so far I've put 35k miles on the 6.6 and it's an insanely reliable engine. Besides regular service I've never been in the shop. At 35k my 7.3 had been to the dealership 3x. The 7.3 is definitely faster getting to 60mph.. if that's something you're concerned about in a 1ton work truck. Me, i want reliability. I want to trade my truck with 300k miles on it.

I have a truck just like this and tow a 11k lb travel trailer. I notice the same thing when towing with cruise control. I think partially this is due to how gm programs their cruise thresholds, not just engine braking. My wife has an expedition max and suburban prior to that and i immediately noticed the ford likes to stay near the cruise control speed as much as possible even at the sacrifice of smoothness, whereas the suburban would go up and down in speed however it was much softer/smoother cruise control management.
Like the towing videos and comparison for sure!! keep up the good work

We have a 2021 and a 2024 at work both crew cab long bed 4wd 1 ton with very heavy service bodies. They both pull 10,000 ish pounds trailer all day. Biggest difference so far is how smooth shifting the trans is and a marginal gain in fuel economy. Almost no mountains near us so neither struggle too much power wise. Nice video. I think you kind of seen that most of the “complaints” are not warranted when it comes to the 6.6 engine. It makes a lot of power and is very comparable on torque with the 7.3. The 6.6 makes 400 foot pounds from just below 2000 rpm all the way to about 5500 rpm.
Fuel mileage is great for these trucks too. They are pretty similar to the Duramax. Within 2 mpg or less usually.
The biggest draw back is the 6 speed. I say that owning one for what it’s worth (2022 with now 33,000 miles). The transmission needs/needed another gear between 2nd and 3rd gear. 2nd gears top speed is about 64 mph. 3rd gear is about 96-97 mph. That’s a big gap. The 10 speed will absolutely fix this. And in my opinion that was the biggest difference in performance for your test.
As far as grade braking goes, using cruise control is not the best way to go about it. It was a fair test since you did both trucks the same but from my experience using your brakes with the 6.6 and 6 speed and it will very quickly downshift.
In my opinion the 6.6 is the best gas engine on the market by a wide margin. Especially now with the 10 speed but even with the 6 speed. Once you learn the “quirks” of how it operates it becomes mostly a non issue. The engine itself has went off pretty much without a hitch. The same can’t be said about the 7.3 and they both debuted at the same time. So fair comparison for both. If anything it’s even worse for the 7.3 considering it’s an optional engine and the 6.6 is GMs standard. So every gas GM HD is a 6.6 but the same is not true for Ford.
And I would be willing to bet most of your complaints will be solved once you drive the 10 speed. Because from the way I took your review, your complaints were with the transmission shifting/tuning and not the engine itself.

You’ve kind nailed it! Every other person who I’ve spoken to, including my dad who’s truck it is, loves their 6.6 gas. Only complaint is under heavy towing it would be nice to have the 10 speed. One possible positive for the 6 speed it replacement cost/repair ability. The 6 speed
(6L90-E) has been around for almost 20 years including the 6L80 it’s little brother. It’s a well known dependable transmission that is, from taking to our mechanic, very easy to repair and replace. If you had to compare the 6 speed and the 10 speed for replacement cost he quoted more than double for the 10 speed. Just a thought, if you don’t need the extra gear then it’s not really necessary. For us the 6 was fine. We only pull 10-12k and really a 1/2 ton could pull our race trailer, in terms of weight, but we really needed the stability associated with a 3/4 ton.
In short we love our 6.6 gas.

    • @matthewanderson9912
      @matthewanderson9912 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

@@kcspeed9980 the 6 speed is a good transmission and it does a good job. It’s tuning along with the throttle tuning in general is a little odd and that’s where all the 6.6 gas “online” hate comes from. And it’s almost exclusively online because in the real world everyone loves them.
But anyways, the 6 speed wants to lug the engine at all times and it wants to get into 6th gear as soon as possible. Some of that is throttle positioning tuning too though. It’s almost lazy in it’s operation. However, you put your foot in the throttle and it’s a different story. This happened in his video too.
The power is there even with the 6 speed but the 10 speed will be a better performer. Again I’ve got one and I’ve had it for nearly 2 years and just over 33,000 miles. I pull my 8.5’x24’ enclosed trailer. It does a really good job.

    • @kcspeed9980
      @kcspeed9980 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@matthewanderson9912 One trick I’ve used to “help” with the transmission/throttle tuning is to use “off-road mode. It’s not that aggressive of a change but I think it’s better. Also we have 13k on ours and just about 1 year on it. Our trailer is also a 8.5’x24’ enclosed car trailer. Pulls it like a champ, wind sway is our only issue and if the weight distribution is off. Other than that it’s great. Way more pulling power than we need. What kind of fuel economy do you get? We get 16 highway 12 city, NYC so horrible traffic, and 9 towing, we have a lead foot and need to fix that.

A good friend of mine is a Ford dealer mechanic and he has warned me to stay away from the 7.3. He has put several camshafts in them at very low mileages. He says the camshafts are soft steel. I know the 8 and 10 speeds have better performance numbers but it seems like every time I drive one more than a month or so I get tired of all the constant shifting. I am a dealer so I drive about everything. Also, I like to manually shift all these trucks when I'm pulling heavy. I'm not sure why any of these people that do reviews don't use the truck that way. They just put the cruise on or put it on the floor and call it a day. I know the TFL guys brag on how fast the ford 6.2 went up the hill. It was sitting at like 5500 rpm the entire way. I would say people that are hauling a camper with the kids would accept the minute or so less time it takes to get to the top to not have to listen to that the entire way.

A 90s diesel would lose in every measurable performance metric compared to these new gas trucks. And the gas trucks from the same era would be light years behind.
I’m a Chevy guy but the fact is a 1990s 2500 Silverado with a 454 and 4 speed auto wouldn’t have been able to maintain his speed in this test. It wouldn’t have been close. It mostly would have been due to the 4 speed auto but being down over 100 hp wouldn’t help things either.

Keeping the engine in its power band isn’t a function of how many gears, it’s how the transmission shifts. There’s so much more to this than meets the eye. Don’t get caught up in any particular make. The 7.3 is a 2k option last I checked. Regear the gm if you don’t want a ford. What’s the price difference as these trucks sit? A lot I’m guessing. Plowing snow? Take the ford for its straight axle. Driving 80 on the expressway take the GM. The UAW and the EPA will prevent anything from being a great vehicle for the personal owner. If your a business and qualify for fleet discounts and you sell off after 5 years then your in the sweet spot for the engineering intent of these trucks. Make it last 5-7 years don’t blow a trans or engine till after the warranty. Ex automotive designer here and there’s no perfect truck. I’ve driven and studied them all. They all suck. GM seems to always be lazy to downshift. I had an 2500HD with the 6.0 and 6 speed transmission. I really did love the truck, especially the way that it was so reliable. We pulled our 10k fifth wheel with very little issues. I just hated the way that the 6 speed would not downshift and keep speed. Then comes a Blackbear custom tune, and that made a difference. I saw that the transmission would shift faster and keep the 6.0 in the power band more effectively. I hope they tune the new 10 speed to downshift quicker, I’m sure it would be a better tow rig. Funny thing is, I had to downsize trucks and went to a Colorado zr2. Ironically that 8 speed with the 3.6 down shifts very quickly and stays right in the powerband. If I need to go back to a 3/4 ton I the future,I would def get the 10 speed and 4.30 gears if it was offered.

I think it will be very interesting to see how the 10 speed in the 6.6 stacks up because those lazy downshifts were just causing the engine to work so much harder to regain speed halfway up the hill

  • @kellycrawford1346

These comparisons are always a bit odd to me. Theyre not very "real world".
Typically when towing, especially going downhill, you would select the right gear manually, letting engine braking slow you down rather than your brakes.
Also, i dont believe GM built the 6.6 gas engine to replace the 8.1 or to complete with the 7.3. It was to create an improvement upon the 6.0 it replaced, and to offer a good option for those that dont need the power of a Duramax. Nor the cost.
6.6 gas is perfect for those that need more tow capacity than a half ton, but dont need to tow a house.
Its also great for those that dont tow at all, but need to haul heavy stuff in the bed more economically.

So the 2024 6.6L with the 10-speed trans is an amazing truck. Fuel economy is slightly better, but the interior refresh is a game changer. Ford's interior is dated. They need to fix that to get back ahead of Chevy/GMC. Plus, Ford is having way too many issues with build quality. Their cost is also a fair bit higher for comparably equipped trucks.

I think what you're noticing is very poor transmission tuning and of course like you mentioned only 6 gears vs 10. It's not so much a lack of power as it is the fact that the transmission is unresponsive. On some of those hills, if it downshifted earlier it would have hit 110 again much faster too. TFL also noticed this. The 10 speed reviews I've seen are great, and one guy "automotive inc" here on YT actually says the 6.6 10 speed does better than the ford, he's owned both but his ford crapped out on him (cam/lifter delamination). They should be far more comparable anyway.
