  • The War of the Ring was the primary war featured in the Lord of the Rings. There were many battles and skirmishes fought during the war, but not all of them are well known. Thank you all so much for watching, let me know your thoughts about the War of the Ring and the Lord of the Rings in the comments below! As always, a great thanks to the online artists whose visual works made this video possible! If you are one of the artists, please let me know and I will post your name and a link to your work in this description!

    Hey everyone, I hope you all enjoy the video! While the battles listed in the video are the major conflicts within the War of the Ring, there are other small skirmishes and battles that happen behind the scenes that I would implore you all to look out for during your next reading of the Lord of the Rings! And of course there are small duels and fights that are not listed in the video as well, so keep an eye out for those as well! Thank you guys so much for the support, it means a lot! See you all next week!

      Can't you make a video (or video's) in the future, where you discuss the details of some of the events during this war? I'd like to know much more about it.
      By the way, can you make a video on what events were most likely to happen when saruman and sauron would win this war?

      Pringles 2003 That’s an interesting thought! Although the Nazgûl besieged Minas Ithil in 2000 of the Third Age, more than 1000 years before the events of the Lord of the Rings. That would be a long war indeed haha.

    When Tolkien had to divide Lord of the Rings into a trilogy and each volume needed a separate title The Return of the King was a title that Tolkien didn't like for the third volume because it told you what happened. He favored calling it The War of the Ring, but for one reason or another he was overridden by the publishers at George Allen & Unwin. Personally, I'm fine with either title, but it is quite an interesting piece of Tolkien trivia on a channel that broadens one's knowledge of Tolkien's writings.

    • @violenceteacher6669
      @violenceteacher6669 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've read the reason Tolkien didn't want The Return of the King as the title was because he thought it spoiled too much of the story, since by that juncture we all knew of Aragorn's past, and that he was the rightful heir to the throne. Not certain if that's true or not though.

    • @alanpennie8013

      It's The Two Towers that's the really problematic title since no one can agree which two are meant

    • @KTChamberlain
      @KTChamberlain 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@alanpennie8013 True, although if I had to pose a theory as to which towers are the titular two towers I think it would be the tower of Orthanc, and the tower of the Hornburg. On the first edition cover of The Two Towers you see a white tower on the left and then a black tower that matches the description of Orthanc. In the book of The Two Towers the Hornburg is the first tower we see in Book Three, and the second one is Orthanc. Minas Morgul appears in Book Four, and Minas Tirith's tower of Ecthelion does not appear until Book Five of The Return of the King. Again, this is just a theory...a Book Theory...sorry, I couldn't resist.

    The first time I read “The Hobbit, and The Lord Of The Rings” was in 1969 when I was pregnant with my son. I know that I have read these books Numerous Times, once a year. I have probably bought the series over70, 80, times, just because. I gave numerous of them to a lot of my friends, lost a few of them, (Hopefully whoever found them, read them.) I read them every year from ‘69 to the middle 80’s, after that every 3-5 years.
    But I am sorry to say that after that I have only read the series maybe a couple of times!
    I was really really turned off by the movies.... and just sorta quit.... probably one of my regrets!
    I just found this site and I am definitely going to read it again. Because you have made me understand so much more about the books that I never understood, but innately I did, but not the intellectual aspect of the story! (Sorry just a artist, not an intellectual.) (?) 🥴
    Because in the age of America at this time.... We really really need a glimmer of hope?
    Thank You!

    One part of the movies I didn't like was that they left out entirely the Red Arrow. Along with the beacons of Gondor the Red arrow was also a request for aid from Rhan, as well as a reminder of the oath Rohan's kings made to Gondor in exchange for the very lands they now lived on.

  • @Badboyben1422

    Much like in the Last Debate that even if all the Free Peoples of Middle Earth united together against all of Saurons forces it would've been a costly battle in which more would've been lost for the Free Peoples. Faramir implies that Sauron can afford to lose a host better than Gondor to lose a company of Men. Which is proven true at the battle of the Black Gate where Sauron had 600,000 Orcs at the battle. As for why Sauron didn't use all of his forces to attack each settlement individually (Gondor, Rohan Lothlorien, Mirkwood, Dale, Iron Hills, Erebor etc) is probably because he didn't want to give them time to build defenses. Even if he lost those battles, the War was just beginning in his mind. He had time and countless servants. Can't wait for next weeks vid!

    Would Galadriel actually have much power? Her main power came from her ring of power, which was broken of the destruction of the one ring. Seeing the light before the sun and moon gave her greater knowledge and wisdom than other elves, but I believe her throwing down the walls of Dul Goldor was more of a symbolic act of cleansing that part of the forest.

    First of all I really like your videos, as they are entertaining and I like your way of telling the storys and how you use your voice. Concerning this video I've got a question. Can we be sure that there have been no further battles during the war of the ring? I only read the published Lord of the Rings and not the History of Middle Earth, but I always wondered if there was a siege of the Celduin or the Ered Luin. Furthermore is there any record on how many occasions Eomer saved Rohan from a potential thread by Dunlendings or Wargs and Orks. Furthermore Gandalfs talk of 'what might have been' makes me think there have been further threads the readers were not directly made aware of. I would cite the Passage, but I haven't got my Lord of the rings with me. I will when I think of it.

    Strategically, I think Sauron focusing all his attention on Gondor, while maybe worse for our side in terms of the results, I think would still end in failure for him and I think he knew that. Sauron was completely insane and one can even argue foolish, but he was far from stupid. He learned from his last mistakes and worked to correct them for his next attempt. Since it was a united alliance of elves and men that took him down previously, I imagine his strategy was to keep the free peoples completely separated from one another. Divide and conquer, as they say. If he hadn’t, I imagine the Lothlorien elves might have lent more aid like they did in the films or perhaps the dwarves may have even sent aid as well. It may seem far fetched, but I don’t doubt Gandalf might have been able to convince the northern kingdoms to aid in the situation if things were different and they weren’t under such pressure. But that’s just me and I imagine that’s exactly what Sauron didn’t want. And considering this was likely his last chance to take Middle Earth before Dagor Dagorath, I doubt he wanted to take any risks and let his enemies unite like last time.
    As always, this was a great video dude and I look forward to more content in this fascinating world Tolkien made XD

    While I love the video, I'm a bit curious as to how you reached the numbers of 100 000 men on the side of the free peoples. From what I know, Gondor was only able to muster no more than 13-15 000 including the reinforcements Aragorn brought with him. Rohan brought 6000 riders. The wiki says Dale had about 50 000 men, but I couldn't source that. To be honest, this is one of the most frustrating areas for me with the lack of information on it. From what I have read, Eriador is fairly sparsely populated, after the dissolution of Arnor. There are only a few areas that still have centralized leadership in Mithlond, Rivendell, and Thorin's Halls.
    The only active military force per say are the Rangers. But Tolkien doesn't give any concrete numbers. The only references are obviously to the Grey Company, which numbered 30. Of course those were only the ones that could be gathered on short notice, so you have to consider how long was spent looking for them. It is unfortunate that we don't know the scope of their activities either. Going by Karen Fonstad's atlas, Eriador's width is about 550 miles from the Blue Mountains to the Angle. She also lists Arnor circa 1050 as being around 248 540 square miles. We know they patrolled the Shire and parts of Bree Land, but little else. Although I'm fairly certain they had a presence in the Angle.

      kiwipile We’re told multiple times the Full muster of the rohirrim is 12,000. Theoden even says he could get 10,000 men to go to Minas tirith.
      Dale isn’t that big and had a couple hundred in the battle of 5 armies. Due to how fast men repopulate and how big dale was by the end of the 3rd age I estimate 2-3,000.
      Gondor has a couple thousand at osgiliath and rangers in ithilien (like faramirs company) and they battled orcs for weeks so many probably died. At Minas tirith they had like 6-7,000 defending against the witch kings army. Aragorn saves thousands of gondorian slaves and tells many men to go to Minas tirith. In the great debate Aragorn mentions that when they leave the city will be better defended when it was to begin with. He says over 4,000 men are marching to Minas tirith. Imrahil even days they could have 20,000.

    I wonder, and I don't remember if it happened or not in the books, but did Frodo or Sam ever tell Gandalf that it was Gollum that actually caused the destruction of the ring, and that Frodo, finally at the end, fell into complete sway of the power of the ring?

The book was given to Sam's eldest Daughter Elanor. Copies were given to Merry and Pippin, and a copy was given to the Libraries of Gondor and (Probably) Arnor. This video really aroused a question I've had for a while which is what I'd the true power of the urukhai? Now you state the horn of Helm hammerhand unleashed fear in the ranks of isengard. Yet when the soldiers of isengard raided the fellowship at amon hen the horn of gondor had was not said to drive fear in the ranks even though it did to the goblins of Moria. This strikes me as odd as most of saruman's forces at this battle were orcs of moria, only a select few were the urukhai and they were described as large and strong, alike to how they are portrayed in the movies. But it is also stated that saruman did not use these uruks as his guards, yet the dunlandings, in fact the dunlandings were supposedly the cream of the crop in saruman's army. There are many people who say the uruks were on the lesser side of men but many also who consider them greater In combat and loyalty. So I would like yours or someone's outlook on this topic

      this interested me so i did some research. they are connected through their lineage of the 4th king of numenor. He had 3 children, his oldest child was Silmarien, a daughter, and his second child was Isilme another daughter.and a son named Tar-Meneldur. Because of laws back then didnt allow women to rule so his son Tar-Meneldur succeeded him, becoming the 5th king of Numenor (this is the line all future numenorean kings including Ar-Pharazon are descendants of ).
      Silmarien's (the 4th king's oldest child) descendants would be known as Lords of Andúnië, and their followers would be faithful to the Valar. The final lord would be Elendil, father Isildur and Anarion. since he did not partake in Ar-pharazon's attack on the Valar, he and The Faithful were given safe passage to middle earth. They would found Arnor and Gondor and Aragorn would be the descendant of isildur.
      long story short.
      4th numenorean king -
      Oldest daughter( Aragorn is a descendant of hers)
      Oldest Son- (Ar-Pharazon is a descendant of his)
