    The war of wrath and the original clash between the Valar and Morgoth remind me of the wars between the Olympians and Titans in Greek Mythology.

      @@disturbed157 Cronos was pretty evil.
      It's not like Zeus was "good" but that's another issue.
      Eating his own babies definitely makes him evil.
      I compare Melkor to Cronos mainly based on his descripton after arriving on Arda."He was like a majestic giant (his feet was wading in the sea and his head reached clouds) but gloomy and terrifying." He was basically a titan at that point, towering over mountains and all the other Ainurs.
      Manwe had strong similarities to Zeus (and Odin) but mainly the former. But he was much more pure than Zeus.
      And I think comparison to Lucifer is self-explanatory. Strongest angel grows jealous of God's creation and rebels, then goes on to corrupt mankind and the world.
      We know this story.

    Eonwe’s compassion for Sauron would have disastrous consequences for Middle-Earth, just as Manwe’s compassionate release of Melkor from the Halls of Mandos had before. A little less compassion and a little more caution from the Valar would have saved countless lives.

      I suspect it would have been difficult for any of the Valar to fully accept that their sibling, a fellow direct creation of Eru Ilúvatar, could be truly beyond redemption. After all, if that was the case, it would raise some uncomfortable questions about that fallibility and intent of their creator.

    • @timonsolus

      No - Eonwe told Sauron to go to Valinor of his own accord and ask for forgiveness. Sauron said he would, and Eonwe believed him and let him go. Idiot.

      Regarding Manwe and his unchaining of Melkor ... it's amazing how simple-minded some of the commentators are on this thread. The basic thing to keep in mind is that Manwe was free from evil, and could not comprehend it. It raises an interesting philosophical question: must one have evil in them in order to comprehend its nature and does being free from evil require that one must be ignorant of it's properties? Put more simply: does it take one to know one?

      Absolutely agreed. I just re-read Silmarillion, and after reading the "War of Wrath" chapter, even though it has an absolutely huge scale, I couldn't help but fell underwhelmed because it was described too broadly.

    • @jamesaron1967
      @jamesaron1967 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Yes, it is quite unfortunate for the Tolkien fan and scholar alike that this war, the largest engagement by far in the whole of the legendarium, to have been condensed thus. It could have been expanded to a small book in and of itself if commensurate detail applied to LOTR events were similarly expanded upon to the War of Wrath. Four decades is an _enormous_ amount of time!

    In the Silmarillion, I really like that the War of Wrath is most mysterious major battle of the First Age. It fits nicely with the devastation wrought on Middle Earth in the sense that very little evidence or accounts survive besides some broad details, and it leaves picturing the conflict up to reader's minds, where it's bound to be more terrible than anything Tolkien could've written down.

    I honestly felt so fulfilled when I first read about the War of Wrath in the Silmarillion. Like, previously when reading about Dagor Bragollach and Nirnaeth Arnoediad I was legitimately crying because I loved so many of the characters that died, and so many beautiful realms were destroyed, so when this battle came to pass I was like "Yeah, take that Morgoth you prick"

    The field is lost
    Everything is lost
    The black one has fallen from the sky and the towers in ruins lie
    The enemy is within, everywhere
    And with him the light, soon they will be here
    Go now, my lord, while there is time
    There are places below
    And you know them too
    I release thee, go
    My servant you'll be for all time
    As you command
    My king
    I had a part in everything
    Twice I destroyed the light and twice I failed
    I left ruin behind me when I returned
    But I also carried ruin with me

    War of Wrath was the end of Morgoth's terror which was absolutely necessary for the free peoples survival as not even Sauron's Dark Days were as terrible. If Morgoth had not been overthrown all the free peoples would have eventually perished and l think even the Easterlings who fought on his behalf would have been betrayed and destroyed. The Silmarillion said Morgoth feared men even though he found them easy to deceive and serve him. I figure he feared them because they could just as easily turn against him. I would imagine that strife probably occurred between his men and his more evil servants like orcs. l can't find a single reference in the Legendarium of men taking orders from orcs, not a one.

    • @glennross85

      Wrong, Morgoth has one final trick up his sleeve.

    • @MountainFisher
      @MountainFisher 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Glenn Ross are you referring to the final battle of Dagor Dagorath? I think that it isn't relevant to my soliloquy as Morgoth in the Emptiness of his banishment had no idea of the coming final Battle at that time. We are not talking of a real place of course, except for in the imagination. The legendarium leaves room to speculate and l would like to hear yours in regards to what you stated?

    • @glennross85
      @glennross85 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Mountain Fisher If you take the angle that the history of middle-earth is in our own deep past, then dagor dagorath has not yet happened, which means if the legendarium was real then dagor dagorath is going to happen in our future, a brilliant move by Tolkien because essentially the story of middle earth has not ended yet, thus a never ending story, so going by this angle, Morgoth is still behind the door of night waiting, just waiting....

    • @jamesaron1967
      @jamesaron1967 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@glennross85 I've read that some Tolkien scholar(s) approximated the events at the end of the Third Age and start of the Fourth Age to have taken place roughly ten thousand years from the present. How they arrived at this figure heaven knows. If accurate, then Morgoth has had countless 'tricks' up his sleeve since that time if we consider all the evils that have befallen humanity and stricken the world itself following Sauron's defeat. Morgoth doesn't need his greatest lieutenant or any other servant to be incarnate. Gazing upon events both current and past, one would be convinced Morgoth won, or is on the road to victory.

    I always wondered how the Eagles really could've fought with the Dragons, and how Earendil slew Ancalagon. I know it's a fantasy and shouldn't think to much on it. But I just have too! The Eagles even with their might talons couldn't breath fire, didn't have scales to protect them from behind, but, maybe they harnessed lightning like when they used it against the Men of Numenor and even slew them. they I would love to hear people's suggestions on how Earendil slew Ancalagon. I personally think that maybe Thorondor used his mighty talons to expose Ancalagons heart and then Earendil probably used a great spear and with all his might hurled it at Acalagon and that's how he fell.

I hope u do comparison videos when the show comes out so we can clearly see what they get right and wrong about it. Until the ill just enjoy these videos ^_^

    Apparently it's because of this war that the Valar decided that they were not going to fight Sauron themselves and decided to stoop to indirect means of defeating him. "Oh he's the free peoples problem so they should fight him!"

      Paul A; That is just conjecture and isn't found in any writings, in the Akallabeth the Numenoreans captured Sauron at one point, it's in the Silmarrillion book. The Valar sent the wizards to contest the will of Sauron. Also find it in the appendix of ROTK.

The host of Valinor was made up of Eldar of Alan, namely the Vanyar and the remainder of the Noldor who had remained in Tirion under Finarfin

    Evil Side:
    Evil Dark Lord: Morgoth one of the greatest valor to exist
    His Lieutenant: Suaron of the Miar
    The Belorongs: not introduction needed
    The Dragons: we burn down 13 cities this morning by coiffing in the general direction
    The Orcs: who were countless in this battle
    The Good Side:
    The Valor: basicly gods
    The Miar: basicly minor deities
    The Elves: basicly demigods
    Ledgensdary dwarf: With great magical equipment and weapons beyond believe
    and the humans: who were their mostly for moral support I mean seriously it seams everyone their outmatched us

    "Before the rising of the sun Eärendil slew Ancalagon the Black, the mightiest of the dragon-host, and cast him from the sky; and he fell upon the towers of Thangorodrim, and they were broken in his ruin."
    I can't believe so many people can't read this line as it is. So many people look at those silly size charts, then go around saying that he must have been miles wide because he "crushed a mountain range". Yet it only says he broke the towers of thangorodrim, yes they were very tall, but that he were also hollow like smoke stacks, since they were often used to issue forth toxic gass. Further he was bred in angband, so it is only natural that he was small enough to fit in the caverns. If he was the size of a mountain he mine as well have destroyed the mountains on the way up.

    • @TheMinecraftHype
      @TheMinecraftHype 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Luke Warila The issue is, they were very far apart - hence where the size comes into play. Now, I agree with you and do not think he was that big by any means. He would have to fit in the pits of Angband, be fed, etc. Sure, he was the biggest of dragons, yet why would he be THAT MUCH (as indicated by size charts) bigger than those whom had similar time to grow, food, etc? He wouldn't as far as logic goes.
      I believe people are misinterpreting the passage. Sure, upon falling he hit the collection of peaks, yet I believe the Hosts of Valinor were the ones to level the mountain range. The host literally "(broke the mountains) in his ruin". "his ruin" meaning the corpse.

    • @LeCharles07
      @LeCharles07 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe he ate the smaller dragons. That's why he such a big boy.

  • @jackolantern147
    @jackolantern147 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I find it difficult, if not impossible to believe that those such as Ulmo, Orome and most especially Tulkas would just sit out this legendary war. I believe that Eonwe was the commander of their armies, while the Valar took more support roles, defending the host as they sailed to beleriand from watchers in the water, hunting terrible beasts that would cause harm to the hosts if unleashed and uprooting fortresses full of evil that were once good, like Tol in Gauroth. Countering any spellcraft from Angband to prevent another sudden flame, uprooting the iron hell, breaking down Angbands gates and especially beating the iron crown into a collar. I think at least those 3 would never miss the chance to take Morgoth down for good.

    Would it be outside of the scope of this channel to explore the folklore origins of the Middle Earth beastiary and topics like it to discover where Mr. Tolkien obtained the roots for material he included in his own? Study of origins in external folklore is very Tolkien-ish. I imagine such an undertaking would require much conjecture and supposition, but I think it would be interesting.
