Singapore and Malaysia have unveiled an ambitious plan-the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone-touted as Southeast Asia’s next economic powerhouse. This mega project promises seamless cross-border synergy, bold investments, and rapid job creation. But will it deliver on its grand vision, or is it doomed right from the start?

For the past 60 years both countries cant even come to any agreement to have the fast rail, water agreement or any agreement with the most corrupted country in SEA. Furthermore the education system between both countries is vastly great. the judiciary system in malaysia is also in a disgraceful shape. all government instrumentalies in malaysia is corrupted and managed by mostly uneducated personnels. The level of development between the two countries is too manifestly great. In short Malaysia is lagging far behind Singapore in all levels from education to even basic management, so how can any one say safely that bot can manage this economic zone. Simply say this projct will fail from the start and a waste of money and resourses.

Yes those at top play the shallow race and religion card but at the core Malaysia and its people hold all the values that Singapore champions and I believe are in equal footing in terms of competence.

Changes in government leadership in Malaysia or Singapore could lead to policy reversals or a loss of commitment to the project.
Past projects, like the High-Speed Rail (HSR), were delayed or canceled due to political shifts. Strained diplomatic relations between Singapore and Malaysia (e.g., over water agreements, territorial disputes) could impact cooperation.
Rising global protectionism or economic downturns may also reduce investment interest.

The author has cover most of the points on SEZ. The economic benefits to Malaysia is overwhelming, while to Singapore is mediocre; could be 80/20. There is one overwhelming downside risk for Singapore ie helping Pasir Gudung to challenge Singapore's port. We cannot afford to help Pasir Gudung to develop cargo volume above the critical mass whereby it can do what it did initially but failed and going to succeed this time. So, the two major factors against Singapore in SEZ are : low share of benefit and building a potential rival port. So, minimally, Malaysia must agree to build a small vessel port near 2nd link and agree that all sez cargo to be shipped to Singapore for shipment overseas.

    • @fisherfriendman

Port viability is a consideration if Singapore plan to still be a manufacturing hub. If manufacturing is to shift to Johor, then Pasir Gudang needs to step up, otherwise Singapore's investment into the SEZ will fail.

Historically, few co-operation initiatives between Malaysia and Singapore have had worked out in the most desired outcomes. Nonetheless, these two countries fate, destiny and fortune are inexorably linked with each other, although there are still some political leaders thinking otherwise. These two close neighbors, esp. their Governments and Political Leaderships must continue to explore creative ways and ideas to enhance co-operation and friendship for the mutual benefits of their citizens. Knowing the SGeans, these people are rather open, friendly and most importantly pragmatic, fully recognizing its geographical size and population diversity .. will always be willing to work with any country for mutual beneficiary co-operation. Opine, if its does fail to deliver, the issue most likely be emanating from the Malaysian side either making higher difficult demand and likely new undiscussed and previously non-listed commitments from Singapore.

Get the crossing points btw the 2 countries running smoothly is key. Without the so called economic zones, prosperity will naturally come about btw the 2 places if crossings are smooth and fast. But as it is now, the poor work attitude of the immigration officers at the Johor side is a sad reflection of the Malay bureaucracy. Stamping passports at odd places or utterly rude to non Malays, and arbitrarily detaining people for days to show their power and arrogance will not invite investors.
The slow clearing at the SG side presently with not all booths open seems to indicate SG wish to discourage crossings. This is a sign of talk not real intention..

Of course it will fail. Malaysia arm twist Singapore into agreeing to a SEZ. The former Iskandar SEZ failed. It was small and yet it failed. Now they expand to include Pontian, Kluang, Johor Bahru, Pasir Gudang and Kulai. Which is total rubbish. How can it not fail? Singapore knows it will fail, but play along for diplomacy sake. Malaysia also knows it will fail - and that is why they insist on dragging in Singapore. So they have someone to blame. They expect Singapore to pour in the funding. Corruption kicks in as usual in Malaysia.

It takes a strong political will with backing at the highest level possible to ensure its progress and sustainability. Thus far, things are looking up.
