Can't get enough of your videos ! I'm just beginning. I have quite a bit of the list above, but more items are added each time I watch another video ! I'm interested in every aspect that you cover, yet at the same time, simplicity is on my mind, radio and antenna. How can you not do a video on the Bat Bike with those big ol fat tires ?
Imagine how useful this has been to me...I've got a FT 817 ( and I'm not even licensed yet...but I will be !) I got this particular radio for two reasons..1. I had to be portable...and 2. I wanted something I could grow with...so all this information is ( as far as I'm concerned anyway ) bloody brilliant. Many thanks! :-)
Thx Mark. I hope that's true. Yeah I love the rails, and the orange just sets them off. Thanks for the comment and kindness, It's very much appreciated.
Brilliant video, Julian. As usual 😉 I most liked the idea of using an external small PA in order not to overdrive the FT817 in Digimodes. Keep up the good work!!!
While I own neither of the Yaesu radios featured here, all the "portable gear & mods" are a good check off for any field radio set up. Another great video Julian !
Julian, one question I have is why do you choose to go with these rigs that are so low powered in the field? I understand if you just like the challenge of QRP and want to reduce power consumption to increase operating time, but there are radios that have more integrated, as somewhat close to the same form factor, and close to the same weight. I'm still learning about QRP, but I have a hard time with not having the option to transmit at 50 or 100 Watts if I needed to. Two examples would be the FT-857D and the IC-7100. I do love Yaesu, but I have to admit I'm leaning more towards ICOM these days because their interfaces are better and often it seems like they are ahead of Yaesu technology wise, like the IC-7300 (not that it's really a portable option, wish it was). The FT-891 is nice, but again the output power is pretty low. I just see you and others buy these radios and have to purchase all these add-ons and it just ends up looking like a Frankenstein and bulky (surface area). Have you considered the CTX-10, it has a built in tuner at least but doesn't do 160 meters? I want to buy something that is good quality, portable, decent output power, and doesn't require me to buy a bunch of extras to operate normally, maybe I'm naive. Please enlighten me, I'm asking this seriously, I'm not trying to argue. :-) Thanks!
Another Great Video, with a plethora of information, again Julian, you pack allot of references into a single space. I have recently purchased an 897D with all options, and am looking foward to portable ops after arrival. Between Callum, Gil, Eric and Yourself, you inspire and keep the hobby very real, practical, and interesting, cheers Julian,.. 73s We always look foward to you pragmatic approach to everything, A92GW , AE1TP... ciao
Wow Thomas, Thanks for the kindness. I thought people considered this pragmatic approach more annoying than helpful. So it's wonderful to hear it's appreciated. You're very lucky man by the way. The 897 is a radio I truly miss, and regret ever selling it. That radio will bring lots of smiles to your portable Ops. Thanks again for the kindness, and the comment oh, it's very much appreciated. 73
Great info again Julian. I'm getting an 817 next week from a member in our local radio club. It will be my first HF radio. I'm on a budget and he is looking after me as he knows I'm a new HAM. I have alot to learn but will definately look into all the options you provided. I think the DRAWS hat is not a viable option but I still want to do most digital modes if possible. I have a Pi4 and will be setting that up soon. I also bought a Surface Go with LTE and GPS, waiting for it in the post. That 10w amp option is also a great idea. I really like all your video's and appreciate all you do for the community. Take care out there in the wilderness. 🥶✌️🤓 73
Hey thanks kindness comment down for watching. I'll keep it short and quick as I'm sitting here having coffee with my wife. Get the Digirig mobile for your 817. It's much better than the DRAWS hat as an audio interface. It'll also work with your Raspberry Pi and your surface go. Your comment really made my day. Greatly appreciated! 73 Julian oh8stn
Thank you for the FT817 and Ft818 ideas I have just purchased a second-hand FT817 so I am looking forward to getting out and trying it in many locations. I will most likely start with an HWEF antenna and a mobile HF whip which covers from 80 meters to 70cm.
No problem, I'm glad you found it useful. Here's a project for the Yaesu ft-817nd ft-818 from my buddies website. It's a 3D printed go box for these radios. www.tobeca.fr/f4ija/doku.php?id=ft818:aio_box
Not an efficient antenna. If I were trying to achieve what you're asking, I would have a separate HF antenna for the band's you'd like to operate, with a separate VHF UHF antenna for those bands. Anything that does everything from HF to UHF will be a complete fail.
Really good overview! I use my trusty FT-817ND for nearly 10 years. Even it is a little outdated compared to my KX2 it is still a good and kind of rough and tough radio. If I had to decide which radio to grab and run, it surely will be the 817! 73 Stephan. DF6PA
Got an 818 on the way. I got some great ideas and tips from this video, thanks! I’ve got a friend printing my power adapter and I’ll get some aluminum to make a set of rails to protect the knobs and ports.
Be careful though, the next one is the Yaesu ft-818 Fail video. But it doesn't mean the radio itself is a failed, just the update :-) glad you're enjoying the videos
Ft-817 $500 plus tuner $100 plus soundcard $20 plus amp $50 plus filters $100 - at some point all that size, weight and cost tips in favour of the ft991a where you get all the above plus 100w, a basic panadpter, DSP, c4fm, etc etc and all in one package. No cables etc.
Just received my "new" to me 817ND. I have watched this video numerous times to make sure I get the supplied info. Thank you for all of it. My only question is concerning the "QRPVER" power amp. Not sure which options I would be needing. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated
First of all you are very welcome. For the amplifier, select 3 watts and the vox PTT. Also all of the filters. That should just about do it. Hope this helps
Another great video showing how to use a good QRP radio. I built the Hardrock 50 amp with its built in tuner. I use it for digital and some ssb operations. I really like this amp for it excellent performance.
Great video again Julian. I had an 817 once but sold it, watching your video does make me think it’s not really as portable as it’s supposed to be, by the time you have added all those mods and tuner, amp, carry frame etc etc you might have well just grabbed something like the IC7100 and taken that into the field :-) I was and still am really disappointed with Yaesu for not including a USB sound interface in my FT891 and (in my opinion) the awful menu interface. My point is that although the manufacturers are producing great radios they are still missing out many small features that make for a truly portable shack-in-a-box type radio for us portable operators.
I completely agree with your Mark. It wouldn't take very much effort to get these radios to the finish line. Especially the 891, it's so close already. Anyway, despite my frustrations with many of the portable radios on the market today, I wanted to make this video for those people who still owe more would like to buy the eighth one seven, or eight one eight. Always awesome to hear from you Mark. Hey I'll be /P tomorrow on js8.
Take care with the Powerpole adaptors. I printed one from thingiverse and the cable side powerpole was fouling that chassis screw in the middle. So I had to 'bend it a little' to plug / unplug. Poof, magic smoke, melted PCB track inside FT817ND. I will design and print another without the need to fight to plug / unplug the powerpole.
Awesome feedback and suggestions. When you've got a better design and upload it, please share it with us. In fact I would be happy to create a blog post about it. Thanks for sharing.
I've seen the hackaday post adding a power conditioner to the FT817. Has anybody tried this? It claims to remove 10% of the heat away. Probably not as effective as OH8STN's recommendations using low power with an amplifier.
Great video!! I do have a question - when doing digital with a R Pi with a Sabrent connection both the Data and ACC ports are used. How do you connect the transmit signal wiring from the amp to the 817 ???
Sir can can you tell us, did you add a fuse to the power cord of your Ft817 or Ft818? If so Wii you describe the way to do it in detail? And wondering what size fuse you used and did you fuse both neg. And pos. Line both ? Thank you very much, Fred
It depends on if I'm using a battery or plugging directly into a power supply. With the battery I always use a fused power distribution and Anderson powerpoles. When I connect to a power supply, I used a cable with inline fuses on both positive and negative sides.
Hi Julian. Total newbie here. I LOVE your vids... learning as I go. I'm very interested in your use of the QRPVER outboard amp. Just curious, is there anything tricky to setting this up/connecting it? What if I had something with a built-in tuner like the Xiegu X5105? Thanks again for the great vids! 73.
Hi Tim. First of all thanks for watching and the question. I wouldn't use that amplifier with an internal tuner. If you use it with the resonant antenna, that's okay. In the RF chain, the tuner always has to be after the amplifier. This answer is kind of a bummer I'm sure, but that's the way it is. I do use this amplifier when I'm using an external tuner, but I usually tried to use an antenna with an SWR low enough that I don't need a tuner. All the specs are on their web page. I would measure the antennas swr you intend on using, to see if it's within tolerance of that amplifier. I hope this helps. Again thanks for watching and thanks for the kindness, It's very much appreciated.
@@OH8STN Hi Julian, thanks for getting back to me on this question. If I understand, sounds like I'd be fine using this little amp with a Xiegu X5105, just ensuring I had a resonant antenna and did not use the internal tuner. Note, it's not that I've purchased this radio yet, but it's in the running for portable ops fun. YOUR VIDS have been a treasure trove for me, since you're doing what I'm primarily interested in... digital modes. I've only been at it since Sept of this year, and all I have is my home rig (7300 + Alinco p.s.), but I took these with me to a cabin in northern WI in Oct. Not really "roughing it," as the cabin had electricity etc. But I ran an LNR 10/20/40 'trai'l antenna mounted vertically on a 40' Spiderbeam, and at 25w (the antenna's rated max) I was doing JS8 and PSK31 to my heart's content. This coming year my goal is to have a dedicated portable rig, R-pi instead of windows laptop, and battery power for the Wisconsin (or wherever) cabin. Many thanks again. You are boldly going where no one else has, and you are inspiring us all in our hobby!
Hey Julian AWESOME work you're doing/providing for the Amateur community!! I wanted to ask your opinions on the MINIProSC interface VS the XGGcomms interface for use with the FT-817/818 as I just picked up a FT-818. I am using the XGGcomms with my Xiegu G90? Obviously I'd have to buy another interface for the Yaesu or get the MINIProSC and cables....? Just wanted your thoughts on the matter. Thanks
Actually go to www.digirig.net and order a digirig mobile and cables. It's a single interface with one USB cable but has audio and Cat control. Let them know I told you about it. You'll be extremely happy with the size and the capability.
@@OH8STN YES!!!! THANK YOU! I just placed my order! That looks awesome now I've gotta check I must've missed a video you did on this little interface!! Thank you again for all you provide to the ham radio community!!!
How do I use the knobs to put 146.52 by hand on the ft-817. I can run 10m off it but I still have issue trying to dail in to simplex on fm, then I got a tx err, its frustrating. 73 kq4hcu
Hi Julian, Awesome video! Maybe I missed it, (or maybe this is a question, of sorts)... How do you split the FT-817 accessory port in order to interface amplifier and/or your sound device? Thanks and 73s, DE - John AG4KN
Hi John. I use amplifiers which have VOX circuits instead of wired PTT. Nsny of the amps use the PTT port on the data port, some use ptt from the CAT port. Others usd VOX. I have seen Operators using splitter cables for amp/data ptt but it seems impractical to add all the extra wires. Hope this helps. 73 Julian oh8stn
@@OH8STN Yessir, it matters to have the amp key capability when using digital modes while running WSJT-X or FLDigi or HRD. If you can believe, I was running digi through a legacy SGC SG 2020 non-dsp (with out the aid of rig control). I decided to pull out my old trusty FT-817 and amp to see if I could configure both to run on digital... seems I need to rethink my approach to interface both a sound device and the amp. I am also using a Rigblaster Advantage (which is great for the shack and a my main shack rig), but it is not so field friendly. Thanks Again and 73s! (yes, I even hit the tip jar). 73s! - AG4KN
Thanks John. Take a look at this post. There's a field friendly audio and cat control device compatible with the 81x. He also does custom cables. oh8stn.org/blog/2021/10/30/reducing-the-cable-mess-digirig-mobile/
Hi Julian. Love your videos! This is an older video, do you still recommend the qrpver amp or have you discovered something else you like better over the last 2yrs? Thanks!
Hi Julian, thanks for the great summary, really appreciate your videos :) I'd like to add one comment regarding the QRPVER amplifier, as low-pass filtering was not mentioned in the video. There is either the possibility to buy the amplifier with only one Low-Pass Filter, which allows for harmonic suppression for one dedicated band (20m or 40m or...) and makes it a "single-band amplifier". If people buy the amp without inlcuded Low-Pass Filters (stated as "1-30 MHz Option") and operate it on multiple bands this setup will not meet the regulatory necessary harmonic suppression. You need to add external LPF before going on the air then - hope we all know about this :) 73 and all the best :)
Alright that's a LOT of info. I've only used my 818ND twice. on 2m and 70cm with the rubber duck antennas. I want to set up for WinLink for my local ARES. I have a Super Antenna MP1 kit. It sounds like I don't need an auto-tuner as the MP1 is manual tuned. So what cable or accessories do I NEED to get started in my winlink endeavors?
great vid already using compression which is a great help . mike gain at 55-60 seems to be best with it...also like amp tx at 1w for 10w out has got to be good for radio life...73
Julian: As usual, GREAT, helpful video re: upgrading my FT-817. Thanks! Just one quick question: another TH-cam video reviewer did NOT recommend the TCXO units that you reference. He cited the inability to adjust the TXCO unit without removing the entire unit from the board. Did you find that it worked right out of the box, without adjustment? If it needs adjustment, how would you go about doing so? Might be time for a separate video... Thanks!
Excellent question. I didn't need to adjust anything when I installed it. It works perfectly and it's tested 70cm through 160. If I had to adjust it, I would simply take off the sticker from the top of a tcxo, which hides the adjustment port. If you have to adjust it, make sure you do it on 70 cm. That'll give it extremely good frequency stability throughout HF. Thanks for the question, and the kindness. It's very much appreciated.
I don't own an FT-817, or FT-818, and probably (maybe) won't be purchasing one, as I'm waiting to see what's up with the IC-705. That didn't stop me from enjoying this video, however. Also, the video had '666' "Likes" when I arrived, and we couldn't have that. We're now at '667' "Likes." ;-)
Thanks for reaching out. Actually the people who are talking about it, seem to like it very much. I haven't got my hands on it yet, but it might be a winner.
do you know anything about the Digital Filter, Digital Signal Processing Filter, Adjustable Frequency SSB CW Amateur Radio Digital Filter, with OLED Display, for YAESU/ICOM ft-817 857 897 kx3 ft-818 (on amazon)?
For outdoor QRP activity: would you personally prefer the FT-891 over the FT-817/818? The icom IC-705 looks fairly interesting, but heavily overpriced in my eyes...
I would never recommend the FT817 or 818 to anyone. It requires many extras purchased separately for example external battery, narrow filters, audio interface and DSP board. The 891 is an awesome radio! Its only downside is too heavy on current consumption. So it requires a large battery to operate outdoors on battery power. The 705 or TX500 are the best options today. The 705 is expensive because everything is already included internally. 818/817 is a money pit.
@@OH8STN Thanks for coming back to me. It's a real hard decision, as this radio will be my only shortwave radio, so it has to be a "one fits all" solution. I will not need VHF and UHF, I already do have that covered. Shortwave at home is not possible (available antenna space) for me, so I am limited to mobile and field operation. I already had the FT-817 in the early 2000s, sold it later for the FT-857D. The FT-857 + 12V/12A battery was to heavy for qrp ops... sold this rig also... So you might be right that the IC-705 is the radio of choice. I am currently building a magnetic loop, so just an appropriate (QRP) TRX is missing :)
Have you tried using one of the Minipa50 (MX-PA50) amplifiers on Ebay? They claim 50 watts (real life less) but the output can be reduced by reducing the output from the 817. This might work well with the Z817 tuner which is only rated at 20 watts. Hate to go off of your recommendation but figure if 10 watts is good, 20 would be great!
So I bit the bullet and went with the Minipa50 amplifier. After careful reading of the LDG Z-817 tuner book, they specifically state no more than 20 watts into the tuner. Also another major caveat is that you are not supposed to do more than 5 watts in digital mode through this tuner. This officially rules out the Z-817 as a tuner solution in this case. Also, other current LDG tuners do not interface with the 817 automatically. I also went through the MFJ line and they do not offer a direct automatic connection with the FT-817/818 and their automatic tuners. The only solution I can find was the Z-100 tuner which is now defunct from LDG. This handed up to 125 watts with 817 interface. I am working on finding this on the used market. When placing the Minipa50 in line with the tuner, on .5w I am getting 9 watts into a dummy load. On 1w in, I am over the range of the LDG. So either the tuner or the amp has to go....
Enjoyed the video, Julian. I use and have had good results the z817 tuner and Signalink USB options. Good info on the SOTA beams speech compression. I'll have to look into that. Also, Since 5 watts can be a little challenging, I just picked up a new little Chinese HF rig, an Ailunce HS1. Specs say its 15 watts....going to be trying it out over the next few weeks. 73!
for the ft-817 wire up i Peiker TM110TK microphone instead of stock microphone.. then you dont need a compressor.. i had to lower micgain to around 35% on my old 817 using peiker
Now, this channel is just awesome! I have a few SHTF vids and a very similar Ham set up to yours. I was referred from the Readymen group on FB to come check this out and I'm glad I did! I'll sub. If you're ever in Utah I'd love to make a video with you. Let me know.
I've always heard that using a amplifier on the 817/ 818 will blow the radio as the resistors are only designed to handle 6W max. But your saying setting the rig to 1W and using the amp is better for the radio?
Someone's been confusing you 🤔 The increased output is on the antenna side of chain. Radio/amp/antenna. The radio only drives the amplifier with a small amount of output power eg 1-watt. From there the amplifier amplifies the 1-watt into eg 10-watts. The amp sends the 10-watts to the antenna. The output from the amplifier never goes back to the radio. In fact the radio doesn't know more than it's one what is being transmitted out of the entire chain.
Love your videos! I would like to go digital with my FT817ND. You make an excellent point with respect to the duty cycle and the use of an external amplifier. My question is with respect to interfaces that seem to be there one year and gone the next. I cannot find the Wolphilink or the Piglet interface being manufactured anymore. Is there another interface I should be looking at to run with my andriod device since these are no longer in production? 73!
The wolphilink is still in production but was delayed. He'll start shipping again First week of April 2019. That notice is clearly written on the Wolphilink page, found on the link in the description. There are two other audio interfaces listed on the video, all miniprosc and signalink USB, both in the description. I don't know anything about the piglet, it wasn't in the video.
Thanks for the fast reply. I sent a message on the Wolphilink site and did not get a response. I know that he has a full time job and that might be the holdup. It appears to be the best, smallest and most affordable way to go so I will have to wait till production starts up again. Thanks again!
Another fantastic video Julian. I really enjoy watching how you address going off grid with your gear and building kit to help you. Just wanted to ask, at 13.30 minutes, I see that you have a power pole distribution unit. Is that something you have built or is it available in a store? Would really like to have something similar in a box with a volt meter, next to the cells to keep cable runs short. Anyway, 73 and keep up the great work.
With all that stuff why not get a 857D and power it down to 10 watts , lil more weight but if you add all the stuff you mentioned wouldn’t be that much at all
I've never put the Dakota in parallel, but they have excellent support departmen. You could ask that question. Usually with lithium-ion or lithium iron phosphate batteries which have an internal bms, you don't put them in parallel like lead acid batteries. But I'm not sure about that configuration, so please ask them. I'm sure they can help, if you tell them your desired configuration.
@@OH8STN Based on another of your recommendations, I have purchased the Dakota batteries and have been running in parallel without any issues on my 857 go bag.
Once again....top notch. What pouch are you using for your LiFePo batteries? Just upgraded to General and will be looking to make a QSO with you hopefully! 73's K9DJR
Scrap the mechanical filters and get a bhi NEDSP1061 dsp module. Its a game changer. If Elecraft would only switch to AA batteries that 9V battery is not doing any of us favors in the field. Portable Zero all the way on the rails.
Thanks for the feedback Lance. Is the bhi module active in both transmit and receive? Anyway you're probably right, I've heard nothing but good things about it.
I only need to use Voice and CW trying to keep it simple and less gear to carry. So how much of this should i acquire without the use of digital or a computer? Thanks for the vid Nick KJ7EKH
Absolutely. The kx3 is a fine radio. It's rather delicate to take out in the field, (I mean really take out in the field), and only lacks an internal audio interface for digital modes. I would give it 7 out of 10 for my dream radio.
Oh yes that makes sense. I did see some 3D printed versions on thingiverse. Things melting isn't really a problem we have at 65° North , but I can see how that would be a problem in lower latitudes.
Hi Steve. That's an excellent question. Wish I would have covered that in the video. The tuner is on the antenna side of the circuit, the amp is between the tuner and the radio. I turn off the amplifier when tuning. Does that answer your question?
Excellent video my friend! Subscribed. Edit: Does anyone know how to hook up with rigirauta outside of FacePage to purchase a QRP Rigiron? I just don't want anything to do with that data harvesting social media profiling platform...
I used MakerBeam profiles to assemble all components together: FT-818, MX-P50M 40 W PA , Z-817, Soundcard, solar controller, BT I/F. A compact go kit less than 4 kg: klsin.bpmsg.com/portable-operation-ft818-go-kit/ 73, 9V1KG
Most of the links I clicked on go to products that are currently discontinued or "not sure when we will have stock again." not real useful. Good info though.
Hi Julian, Thanks for the video. I've got many of the upgrades I need for my FT-817 but your video was helpful for considering what gaps I have and presented some cost effective solutions. I've ordered some Rigiron rails for example. So nearly ready to go. Thanks for the videos. As someone returning to the hobby, your channel provides some solid information (and reminders) for getting going again. 73 G7JRD.
AVOID NICD BATTERIES AT ALL COSTS! They are short lived, easy to cause memory effect shortening battery life, and current supply. NiMH is a better choice, but LiIon is superior, but you must use proper charging systems, they can not tolerate high current inrush, or sustained current charging. Consider conditioning chargers for longer life and capacity.
@@OH8STN Out of the 3 digital interfaces you use portable, which is truly the easies one to get up and running with the fewest quirks? I have the Wolphilink. Although very light and compact, it seems a bit tempermental to volume fluctuations and such. Which of the 3 I've seen on your channel would you say is an absolute go to interface?
@@richardmacleery2553 that's a great question but it's not very easy to answer. Each of these interfaces has a pro and con depending on the operating system you're trying to use it on. The wolphilink is basically Android only and has no audio codec built-in hence the requirement for a solid volume threshold. The ZLP is magic! The DRAWS Hat is by far most difficult. Just remember with a question like thi,s we need to specify which operating system, since the answer changes if we're talking about Android, Windows, Raspberry Pi, Linux, or Mac OS.
@@OH8STN Great points. I would prefer to stick to Android to minimize the size. But can and do use Mac as well. I'm looking for the easiest to set up and use as I'm not very lucky nor educated when it comes to getting these things to work if it requires much tweaking.
Hi Julian, another great video, thanks! I use the protector / stand from www.portablezero.com/yaesu817.html Also bought one for my 991. Not cheap but great quality. 73 de M0PVM
Julian - Love your videos. I've found another solution to help protect your transceiver and other add-ons. It is by TAC-COMM. :-) Thanks!
Very interesting Julian. 73 and tnx.

Another Great Video, with a plethora of information, again Julian, you pack allot of references into a single space.

Outstanding video and helpful
You info on antennas was helpful, but is there any one antenna that you know of that will cover all the ranges of this radio and is someone portable?
Not an efficient antenna. If I were trying to achieve what you're asking, I would have a separate HF antenna for the band's you'd like to operate, with a separate VHF UHF antenna for those bands. Anything that does everything from HF to UHF will be a complete fail.
Excellent video very useful and informative.
Loving every video 👍
Be careful though, the next one is the Yaesu ft-818 Fail video. But it doesn't mean the radio itself is a failed, just the update :-) glad you're enjoying the videos
Ft-817 $500 plus tuner $100 plus soundcard $20 plus amp $50 plus filters $100 - at some point all that size, weight and cost tips in favour of the ft991a where you get all the above plus 100w, a basic panadpter, DSP, c4fm, etc etc and all in one package. No cables etc.
Yep that was one of the points of my previous video
In my last video I was talking about the mchf. We loose vhf/uhf, but again everything else. To be honest, I wish they never ended the ft-897
AWESOME INFO THANKS!

Great video!! I do have a question - when doing digital with a R Pi with a Sabrent connection both the Data and ACC ports are used.
How do you connect the transmit signal wiring from the amp to the 817 ???
I use an amp which has Vox PTT instead of push to talk from the ACC port

It depends on if I'm using a battery or plugging directly into a power supply. With the battery I always use a fused power distribution and Anderson powerpoles. When I connect to a power supply, I used a cable with inline fuses on both positive and negative sides.
@@OH8STN can you tell me what size fuses I would need in the ft817nd. Thank you sir.😁👍

Hey Julian AWESOME work you're doing/providing for the Amateur community!! Obviously I'd have to buy another interface for the Yaesu or get the MINIProSC and cables....? Just wanted your thoughts on the matter. Thanks

Awesome video! Maybe I missed it, (or maybe this is a question, of sorts)...
How do you split the FT-817 accessory port in order to interface amplifier and/or your sound device?
Thanks and 73s,

@@OH8STN Yessir, it matters to have the amp key capability when using digital modes while running WSJT-X or FLDigi or HRD. I decided to pull out my old trusty FT-817 and amp to see if I could configure both to run on digital... seems I need to rethink my approach to interface both a sound device and the amp. Hi Julian. Love your videos! This is an older video, do you still recommend the qrpver amp or have you discovered something else you like better over the last 2yrs? Thanks!
Awesome video, very helpful. Subbed!
Can i use a LAN CABLE (8pin) to connect MIC to TRX instead of the official cable that was broken?
Hi Julian,
thanks for the great summary, really appreciate your videos :)
I'd like to add one comment regarding the QRPVER amplifier, as low-pass filtering was not mentioned in the video.
You need to add external LPF before going on the air then - hope we all know about this :)
73 and all the best :)
Thanks Timo. It's a very good point 👍
Just a Digirig and cables to connect your radio to computer.
great vid already using compression which is a great help . mike gain at 55-60 seems to be best with it...also like amp tx at 1w for 10w out has got to be good for radio life...73
will the TCXO draw more power from the battery ?
Great question, it's negligible 👍
Julian:
As usual, GREAT, helpful video re: upgrading my FT-817.

Where do you get the flexible solar panel
do you know anything about the Digital Filter, Digital Signal Processing Filter, Adjustable Frequency SSB CW Amateur Radio Digital Filter, with OLED Display, for YAESU/ICOM ft-817 857 897 kx3 ft-818 (on amazon)?
Great Video Jullian, couple of things I would like to get from the list are the amp and the rigiron sleeves

@@OH8STN Thank you! You have a great channel I appreciate the content you put out

Okay I don't know what's going on but I'll check them and fix them
ok, google redire4ct is done. Im working on it.
HUGE thanks
I used MakerBeam profiles to assemble all components together:
FT-818, MX-P50M 40 W PA , Z-817, Soundcard, solar controller, BT I/F. A compact go kit less than 4 kg:
klsin.bpmsg.com/portable-operation-ft818-go-kit/
73, 9V1KG
Most of the links I clicked on go to products that are currently discontinued or "not sure when we will have stock again." not real useful. Good info though.
FYI Ive looked at over half of the links you provide and so far unavailable or sold out.
73 G7JRD.
nice vid
Whoa lose any MORE digits?! Sorry to hear that.
I have the Portable Power rails...
Doing my best to COPY your go kit here.
Nice one. Remember not everything is required, but there are some really nice options here. 👍
Did I just see a 320?
no links about all options 😞
Hi Julian, another great video, thanks! I use the protector / stand from www.portablezero.com/yaesu817.html Also bought one for my 991. Not cheap but great quality. 73 de M0PVM

Julian - Love your videos. I've found another solution to help protect your transceiver and other add-ons. It is by TAC-COMM. They are not as compact as what you are showing in your video, but this system will allow you to keep your gear connected in a mini go kit capability. Their website is www.tac-comm.com
" Mission-driven" equipment choices. That was worth the entire video, Julian. Tnx es 73 de KE8DNV
