Thanks Tech Prepper, excellent video, thanks for reviewing the Armoloq, and your setup around the pack. Certainly got me interested, even for POTA and potentially as a part of my go bag setup. Any thoughts? 73 de k1jbd
Thanks, Jwahar. I share your concern regarding ventilation. I live in the Sonoran Desert and I already have a problem operating this radio in the garage and in the field during the summer. My goal for this radio is to operate a bit differently when it's in the bag which will be most of the time. 1) Stick to SSB for short periods of time. I rarely operate more than 20 minutes when doing SOTA. 2) Minimize the use of digital modes. I will not be using this for FT8 or JS8Call. My primary digital goals in the field are: quick APRS messages and check Winlink session to check email. 3) I spend most of my time on receive the reset of the time, so the heat signature is not as bad as when on TX. 4) If it gets hot, pulling it out of the bag is quick. I ordered another bag that has better ventilation a few days back from Amazon, so I'll see if it helps. In addition to the top flap, the front, vertical section can be unzipped down. Stay tuned. I don't want to post the bag until I try it. If you're really interested look me up on QRZ and shoot me an email. 73
@@TheTechPrepper I ordered the prc 117 from high ground gear and was wondering how long after you ordered it did you receive it? It shows shipping label was created but that was 4 days ago. Great video. Btw, picked up some of the pants you mentioned a couple videos ago and love them! Activated a summit a couple days ago and the weather was in the high 30s when I started. It was a tree summit so it was chilly on the hill. 73 and keep up the good work! -KJ7LLS
Thanks, Clinton. I wore those on this activation, too. They’re a great value and function for the price. How was the size and fit for you? Their true size was pretty accurate for me.
The fitment is perfect, I'm a 32x30ish and I couldn't be happier! I'll be giving them a good snowy conditions best this Saturday for another SOTA activation up here in washington state.
Nice! I like it... Most POTA videos that I see are setup on a picnic table, I guess SOTA might be a bit more primitive at times. I like the vertical orientation of that radio.... I'm still studying for my General, but a contact with France seems pretty exciting to me! You were like, meh....next...! LOL! Thanks for the videos, they are well put together and provide solid info, what more could we ask for?
I'm glad you enjoyed it. I really enjoy making these field videos and sharing them. My goal with SOTA and field operations is to improve my chances of deploying effective comms during a disaster or an emergency where the grid is disrupted. Best of luck with your General upgrade ticket. You won't regret the effort you're putting into studying. 73
Nice to meet you, Bob. It was nice to finally meet your brother Paul after all these months. Thanks for watching the video. That peak is just down the street from us.
@@TheTechPrepper I am just getting into APRS and having problems. Have you done a video on how it works with SOTA as far as radio and website settings and info?
I have not done a video on spotting myself with APRS yet. It’s pretty simple as long as you already have the basics down for sending APRS messages. Are you able to send text messages successfully? If not, I would start there first. Once that’s working a Google search for APRS2SOTA should be all you need. Where are you stuck?
It’s the Objective by Hazard 4. I’m still on the hunt for the “perfect” radio bag, but this is close. It works really well and they’re on sale now. Take care of yourself, Juddie.
Now, that is a fantastic radio! I am still trying to get my hands on one at a reasonable price on the secondary market. ARMOLOQ has a TPA Pack Frame for the FT-857, too. www.armoloq.com/copy-of-yaesu-ft-817-818
This configuration is really nice for quickly getting on the air. I've been hooked on this operating style since I discovered the ARMOLOQ TPA pack frame. The new setup has a slimmer bag that packs better.
Super newb here that's currently studying for my tech license. I love this "manpack" setup and think id like to work towards that. Do you need a gen license to do what your doing/run what you have? What type of battery do you use?
The speaker sounds great. I’m experimenting with the same frame for the 891 and 857D and they’re massive. Sadly, those two radios will require a giant pack. The radio pouch for the PRC-117G fits both well, but you need a separate pouch for an external battery.
Good question. It was actually a 19.5’ mast. It’s the SOTABEAMS Carbon 6 mast. The antenna I used is a wire antenna called the PackTenna Mini EFHW. The wire antenna is attached to the mast in a sloper configuration. The EFHW antenna and the mast together are my preferred antenna system when I’m on a peak.
Where do you get those relocating cables from, or did you already have them, I just got my FT818 today , and I've been looking for those cables, but I don't want to cut some down to fit. Thanks for any info
@@TheTechPrepper Things are not always about weight. Something fast, simple, bulletproof are more important sometimes. I like how you have the external battery fitting in the bottom below the radio, nice.
That extra bit of width helps accommodate the battery. With some minor adjustments I could possibly configure it to hold the z817 tuner or digital gear.
Thanks. It's the Hazard 4 Objective. I'm not sure if it's still available for purchase. I stopped using it several months back in favor of the Helikon E&E pouch.
Congratulations on your frame. It's the Hazard 4 Objective SLR bag. It worked well, but I switched to a slightly different bag last year. I'm now using a modified version of the Helikon-Tex E&E pouch. It works great after I had a neighbor modify the top flap. Take a look at my TPA Pack frame playlist as I believe I cover that build.
Hi Gaston, I have the same radio and ARMOLOQ TPA pack frame setup. Where did you purchase the cables for the comms and data package connectors? Also is your bag ready for purchase? Thanks! 73……W5SWX
Good luck with your build. For digital modes, I purchased everything from DigiRig. This included: 1) the DigiRig Mobile; 2) Yaesu 8xx cables; and 3) the USB cable. ARMOLOQ sells a "data package" that allow you to relocated the 6-pin Mini-DIN connector on the back, but I have never used it. My bags are all sold out and there's a healthy backorder and standby list. If you have time follow me on www.buymeacoffee.com/thetechprepper that's were I update everyone. No need for a donation. It's free to follow me there. There's also a "posts" section where I share private content that never makes it to TH-cam publicly. I hope this helps.
Excellent video. I’m looking at getting a QRP rig. Trying to decide between the icom ic-705 or a yaesu 891, 818, 817. Other than the price difference, any thoughts?
Oh yes, sir. Many differences. The radio selection absolutely depends on your needs. Here's my personal take based on how I see those radios based on my operating style. 1. I have the FT-818 and FT-891. They are both great radios and serve different roles. The FT-818 is a QRP rig (low power) and great for ultra portable work like summits on the air, it is not a great home station due to the low power. 2. The FT-891 has amazing receive quality and is a QRO (high power) rig. It's a bit heavier than FT-818, so this is my primary home station, but it is also light enough for me to take on the occasional hike. QRP can be frustrating during contest days, so the QRO radio comes in handy. Personally, I believe everyone should have a QRP and QRO rig. 3. The IC-705 is next on my list for many reasons: a. single cable interface for digital; b. great waterfall; c. field rechargeable; d. still QRP, but more power than the FT-817/818; e. all band and all mode. Take a look at Julian OH8STN's channel as he was a long time 817 fan and switched to the IC-705. At any rate, my advice is fto igure out what type of operator you are and what types of bands and modes you like to use, and pick the radio that satisfies your needs. I hope this helps. You may want to see my recent interview with the Ham Radio Outlet. I talk about why and how I use the FT-818 and FT-891: th-cam.com/video/MHxH65f-f6A/w-d-xo.html
Hey G-Man - I'm catching some of your earlier videos - gotta ask... Are you going to list the gear you use either in the description, or on your blog maybe? Thanks for your quality work!!
Instead of running the rubber duck on the radio, a 440MHz beam isn't that large and you can use C clamps to attach it to 1" dia PCV pipe as a mast and can really reach out on your contacts for the UHF band!
I like the setup. I look forward to the next video. BTW Good choice on the Pro Trek watch. I have one just like it and it's my favorite. What watch were wearing on the mountain? 73, KM6MO
@@TheTechPrepper After doing some more digging, I found out that Yaesu discontinued the FT-818 and the Hazard 4 Objective bag is nowhere to be found as well. On occasions I travel to Alaska and it would be great to bring a small pack like this and have some fun in the mountains. Do you happen to know a similar bag that can replace the Hazard 4 Objective? I have many camera bags but none of them is as versatile as the Hazard 4. You have a great channel. Keep it up!
The EFHW has 26 gauge wire coming off one end of the PCB that goes up to the carbon fiber mast. The other end of the EFHW has a coax connector that is connected to the radio with some RG316 feed line.
I am using these connectors on all the manpacks. It's my affiliate link, but it will not cost you anything, but it helps support the channel. I'll get something like 25 cents. ;-) amzn.to/3QZA06I Good luck with your build.
Awesome Video. I might pick this up for my 818. For portable and satellite work. It’s my only hf radio. What mast are you using. I’m a tech working on my general . Big inspiration man. Keep it up. KC3OZD.
Thanks, Warren. The FT-818 was my only HF radio for a long time. I used it in the shack, in the RV and for portable operations. I am using the SOTABEAMS Carbon 6 mast...very light weight and fits inside my backpack. I've done a couple videos where I show the HF (using an EFHW) and VHF (using a j-pole) setup using the mast. Best of luck with your General upgrade. You have a great radio to start on your HF journey. 73 de KT1RUN
Sorry, I miss spoke. It's 2m only. I tested it on the antenna analyze afterwards. I read the specs somewhere on the Radiall antenna and swear I saw 6m/2m/440.
@@MrBobLyons The stock rubber duck for the FT-818 is a tri-band (sort of), but you need to un-thread the top element depending on the bands you want to work. I'll dig a bit myself to see if there is something better that includes 6m. 73
This antenna was given to me by another ham. It's by a company called Radiall and it's only for 2m. After finding this out, I switched to a much more cable and light-weight 2m/440 antenna--the Comet BNC-24.
There’s a small 4.5Ah Bioenno LiFePO4 inside the main compartment. I get about 5+ hours runtime with the FT-818 based on my usage. Thanks for the pointer on the strap. Great suggestion!
Sorry, I wish I could remember. I searched for "patch" in my email and it returned several thousand emails, so I could not find the vendor. I am a software engineer and "patch" is a common term in our field. I would try a search on Google for "custom morale patches". Good luck!
No offense but i think it would be just as easy to hike up there with just a handy talkie, I’d also use the bench to sit on… to each their own but I don’t understand all the extra weight for such an easy activation.
I did HF as well. I don't believe there is an HT that does HF. My focus is around training. Carrying a non trivial load is part of my personal training plan. I'm really not into traditional amateur radio. Everyone's goals are different.
In the 3 years that I have been doing this, that was the only time where there was a bench on the summit. I am more comfortable on the ground with my pad.
I made a 5,500 mile contact in this video to a gentleman in France as well as several contacts 500-1000 miles in the US. With right and conditions this ready does everything from community to global comms. Note: This radio (FT-818ND) was just discontinued last week and the prices have doubled.
i kinda like this, but the frame looks like the corners are not true. and it "bows" out as being not square with the radio. just the way it looks online? what?
This is an old video with the original prototype. They had 93 degree angles; the new ones are bent at 90.5 degree angles. My Manpack playlist (part 1 through 5) shows the new design.
Not trying to get in your buisness. Are you right-handed? If so you're ht should be on the left. If your a lefty. It should be on the right. You may find that benefit the shoulder thing that goes up. Just a suggestion. Nothing could be worse than a broken ht. Or a ungodly painful brues in the shape of the ht.
5 watts to France..... no big deal 😂 that was awesome.

I have the TPA 857-D frame on my 857 and I love it! Just want to test it with the prc on an upcoming camping trip
Say Hi to your neighbor Paul W7CQQ for me. I'm his brother Bob KW4CQ in Virginia. Hope to come and meet you some day. 73. Great video by the way.
Nice to meet you, Bob. It was nice to finally meet your brother Paul after all these months. Thanks for watching the video. That peak is just down the street from us.
another great video, thx for putting that together
Thanks. It was a blast making this for you guys.
@@TheTechPrepper you’ve inspired me to get off my but and do something, started building a lightweight linked dipole, we’ll see how it goes 😬
That’s fantastic. Good luck with your build. :-)
Is there a complete system including the pack, frame, adapters? Thanks K6CFP. New to your channel. Really liking the content. Thanks.
Great set up. I'm curious about the specs of the battery pack .
This is an old video, but I believe I was running the Bioenno 4.5Ah LiFePO4. These days, I am running the 6Ah model.
great video, I really enjoyed it!
Thanks, Ron. It was fun taking you guys along for the activation. That manpack is really performing nicely. 73
I really like that pack!!! I need that for my 817ND!! Juddie - WD8WV
It’s the Objective by Hazard 4. I’m still on the hunt for the “perfect” radio bag, but this is close. It works really well and they’re on sale now. Take care of yourself, Juddie.
Thank you for the video!
How much power where you running for the France contact?
Full power--6 watts. ;)
That's interesting
Looking at getting a FT857 and looking at portable ideas - M0LBD
Now, that is a fantastic radio! I am still trying to get my hands on one at a reasonable price on the secondary market. ARMOLOQ has a TPA Pack Frame for the FT-857, too. www.armoloq.com/copy-of-yaesu-ft-817-818
....gotta get this setup!
This configuration is really nice for quickly getting on the air. I've been hooked on this operating style since I discovered the ARMOLOQ TPA pack frame. The new setup has a slimmer bag that packs better.
Awesome video
Thank you. This was my first manpack video I believe. A lot has changed since then. Enjoy the content and welcome.
Super newb here that's currently studying for my tech license.
I love this "manpack" setup and think id like to work towards that.
Do you need a gen license to do what your doing/run what you have?
What type of battery do you use?
Outstanding.
Thanks, Chris. Take care.
I like the kit and the relocations... how did the speaker sound to you? Would love something better for my 891
The speaker sounds great. I’m experimenting with the same frame for the 891 and 857D and they’re massive. Sadly, those two radios will require a giant pack. The radio pouch for the PRC-117G fits both well, but you need a separate pouch for an external battery.
@@TheTechPrepper Thanks, looking forward to the update!
Pretty cool, thanks for sharing, what was the big telescopic antenna you deployed?
Good question. It was actually a 19.5’ mast. It’s the SOTABEAMS Carbon 6 mast. The antenna I used is a wire antenna called the PackTenna Mini EFHW. The wire antenna is attached to the mast in a sloper configuration. The EFHW antenna and the mast together are my preferred antenna system when I’m on a peak.
Where do you get those relocating cables from, or did you already have them, I just got my FT818 today , and I've been looking for those cables, but I don't want to cut some down to fit. Thanks for any info
Nice setup. Fast and easy. Also great video but you made me thirsty, beer time.
Thanks, Malen. The kit looks heavy, but now I don’t need to carry that aluminum table. Enjoy your beer! Cheers!
I love your videos!
Thank you for the support. I am shooting a for SOTA video this weekend where I'll be trying a few new operating techniques. Enjoy!
Hi nice video and nice setup. Can you tell me the name of this bag where the ft 817 is? Thx
Thanks. It's the Hazard 4 Objective. I'm not sure if it's still available for purchase. I stopped using it several months back in favor of the Helikon E&E pouch.
Nice video. Just bought the TPA-817. What is the camera bag you're using? Do you have a link to buy? 73...
I hope this helps.
terrific video 73 thanks from kb2uew
You’re welcome. Thank you!
Where did you find this bag ? Im a very interested for my G-106.
Nice!
Hey G-Man - I'm catching some of your earlier videos - gotta ask... Are you going to list the gear you use either in the description, or on your blog maybe?
Thanks for your quality work!!
I think it's time for a blog post with the gear list. I'm in the process of relaunching the site. Great idea!

@@TheTechPrepper nothing to apologize for man. Keep crankin' away, it's good stuff.
Instead of running the rubber duck on the radio, a 440MHz beam isn't that large and you can use C clamps to attach it to 1" dia PCV pipe as a mast and can really reach out on your contacts for the UHF band!

The Casio Pro Trek and the FitBit Ionic. I wear two watches since the Pro Trek has no GPS. It’s a great watch and takes a ton of abuse like a champ.
great vid 73
Thank you! The manpack has changed since then. Check out the TPA Packframe playlist if you want to see more on this style of operation.
Great setup with that FT-817. What kind of battery you use to power it ?
Either a 3Ah or 4.5Ah LiFePO4 Bioenno.
Keep it up!
What was that small antenna
The packtenna went from the coil with one wire to the top of the pole?
The EFHW has 26 gauge wire coming off one end of the PCB that goes up to the carbon fiber mast. The other end of the EFHW has a coax connector that is connected to the radio with some RG316 feed line.
What type of coax right angle connector are you using? I need two for my FT-857D build. -73
I am using these connectors on all the manpacks. It's my affiliate link, but it will not cost you anything, but it helps support the channel. I'll get something like 25 cents. ;-) amzn.to/3QZA06I
Good luck with your build.
Awesome...greeting from indonesia 👍

What is the brand/make of the 2m, 70cm 6m rubber duck antenna? Where can I purchase Thanks
Sorry, I miss spoke. It's 2m only. I tested it on the antenna analyze afterwards. I read the specs somewhere on the Radiall antenna and swear I saw 6m/2m/440.
@@TheTechPrepper Ok no problem looking for the tri band model to purchase. Keep the videos coming!
@@MrBobLyons The stock rubber duck for the FT-818 is a tri-band (sort of), but you need to un-thread the top element depending on the bands you want to work. I'll dig a bit myself to see if there is something better that includes 6m. 73

This is the one that picked up and still use: amzn.to/3RPluhm

That Radiall antenna, what model is it and where can I get one?
This antenna was given to me by another ham. It's by a company called Radiall and it's only for 2m. After finding this out, I switched to a much more cable and light-weight 2m/440 antenna--the Comet BNC-24.

@@TheTechPrepper Thanks
What bag were you using?
This is an old bag that may be discontinued. It's the Hazard4 Objective. DLSR camera bags work really well in general.
You have a bench/table, why on the ground?
In the 3 years that I have been doing this, that was the only time where there was a bench on the summit. I am more comfortable on the ground with my pad.
what is the range on something like this?
