Hey Julian! Great to see you! About 2 years ago I had a crazy car crash and a stroke. My brain zapped a lot of the information I used to know regarding radio. Just the other day I made two HF contacts and a 2m contact. I'm trying to get my knowledge back! It's slowly coming back! I want to tell you thank you so much! Your knowledge and your drive is so valued! As I get my brain back in order, eventually I'll talk to you on the air! I am reviewing your videos on the Pi. Lol! -K0JWQ Adam!
Why are most QRP field radios not water resistant? If they are truly designed to be used in the outdoors, why not make the units at the very least IP66 (Like most if not all HT radios). When I go hiking, I always bring the Lab599 and leave the IC705 at home. On more than 1 occasion it's rained on me while establishing communications. Knowing my unit can survive getting wet brings peace of mind.
Great job covering the rig. I kept nodding in agreement with you the entire time. Not that I'm an expert by any means, but your presentations are always on the mark. Thanks Julian!
I'm not the Yaesu guy, but I found the video very informative, thank you very much! And because I like what else you do with Ham Radio, solar, nature, etc., I've just become a new member.73

That would be nice. I live in a desert, not a big deal, but we still get rain. When out in the field i keep my 891 in a pouch away from my water. I will be getting some sort of water resistant cover that can cover the pack while hiking and the radio while out of the pack.

I’m some what stick to Yaesu, but still waiting for more info about what new features this new rig can give me based on my op style, or just a bunch of fancy stuff. Is there any reason a QRO (100w) radio can't have low current consumption when running only 5-10w? I would think that would target a much wider audience than a QRP only rig. I must be in the minority customer base because none of the new offerings are targeting my interest in an all band all mode 100w field radio. I'm still using a 25 year old IC706MKIIG.
I'm still using my 706MKIIG also and no you are not a minority in wanting an all mode 100-watt radio I don't understand why they have abandoned the 857/706 capabilities mobile radio. Even a 20-watt field radio would have put them in the spotlight.
There is no reason they can't do it. Look at the PA500 amplifier, 100 w with less than 12 amps of current consumption, and 80ma rx current. The community hasn't demanded it.
@@OH8STN with the awareness that you and others have raised in the EMCOMM community, a new version of the 857 would be quite desirable. I own the TX 500, the FTDX 10 and the 991 and the radio I use the most is my 857 in a backpack with a chameleon TDL. The one thing I don’t like about the TX 500 and the BAT 500 is all of the freaking cables that spider out of it…adding the PA 500 to that for me feels like a wirey nightmare… and it was your videos that inspired me to do it. 😉🫡
@andyprisco4870 I completely agree with you about the tx500. Why they would put all these cables coming out of both sides of the radio, will never know. It makes absolutely no sense to me. It's a great radio, but reminds me of a tentacle monster. If the 857 were low current (under 500ma), I would completely agree. That's probably it's only flaw. If it had an internal audio interface on an updated model, that would be a benefit as well.

This is the radio that should’ve came out instead of the FT-818nd . I suppose better late than never, it does have the optional external cooling fan for ft-8 and external atu so it’s a very modular portable system however I wonder why they didn’t incorporate the cooling fan as standard in the radio itself or in the atu in the development phase. I suppose we will see what the accessories are available once it’s released
@@OH8STN I think that’s the unfortunate part is that icom has a 4 year head start with the 705 so the market share they are targeting has been utilised and there’s the xeigu range which is capable while in a lot of people’s budgets in the current financial situation. I have high hopes, but as with all things new price point will also be important.whats the point of a portable low power rig that cost as much as a home rig.
I think this radio , as well as IC 705 are more made for Japanese domestic market. they use a lot of 144, 430MHz band CW, SSB. and their power level is limited to 10 watts on entry level license. AG6JU
Seeing as it's taken me this long to get an IC-705, I think the chances of me getting the new Yaesu are slim to none. Besides, I'm an Icom guy, still got my IC-706 MK I and MK IIg, although I'm thinking about letting the MK 1 go just to make a bit of room. I wonder if the Yaesu is dual receive on all bands, or whether (based on the antenna labelling and screen shots I've seen) it's a HF/6m plus a 2m/70cm radio in parallel. time will tell I suppose. Stay well Julian. 73 de G1AW
Thank you Andy. It's still a bit unclear. It'll be a long time coming before I give Yaesu any more of my money. What I need from them is low current consumption. Until that happens, I really can't see any reason to buy one. Thanks for reaching out and being kind as always. It's greatly appreciated. 73 Julian oh8stn
The Fan clips onto the radio body then the ATU attaches to that based on pictures I've seen - definitely makes the radio a bit thicker, not necessarily an issue. However, not even ip66 rated, is getting frustrating with so called field radios. The battery is quite large and not HT compatible, that's how they're getting so much run time.
Having open API is about as essential as wireless device support. Support for audio over network can be done in many ways, but there is a trap; nobody would like to have a radio with support for network audio using something that is popular now, but will be dead in few years. Think about having a flagship radio with built in network audio made with Skype of early 00's instead of open standards.
Key things for me over my IC-705 Dual Antenna Sockets, Bolt-On ATU, 80% Bigger Battery, 70MHz / 4M C4FM, Have local Nets on 10M/6M, more convenient than my FT-991A I hope they expose the GPS Data via USB, like the IC-705(Port B), Time sync for Laptop using BKTimeSync I did notice a Rubber Flap, "GPS", looks like you can add an "External GPS Antenna" RE: USB-C PD If they Implemented USB-C PD rather than just USB-C Charge If you plugged the Radio into Laptop which was also USB-C PD I believe they would try to charge from each other. That what happens with my USB-C PD phone when I plug into my USB-C Lenovo Laptop
Hi Julian, Yaesu confirmed that 4 meters (70 MHz) will be available on this radio. Just my thoughts: since this radio provides two separate receivers it's now one of the only portable radios that can do satellite comms on the fly where you can transmit and listen to your own transmission (f.e. QO-100). Also I do like the modular system of adding the tuner and optional fan togheter with the battery. My guess is that this radio consumes a little more juice taking the DSP and color touchscreen into account. Nice to see C4FM but hardly used when portable I guess. My only concern so far, will the color display be bright enough to use in the open field? Best 73, Phil ON4VP
@5:49 Looking at Yaesu's estimates... HF operation is estimated at 9 hours of use, implying a draw of 0.63 amps, or 630 mA (5.67 Ah / 9h = 0.63 A). V/UHF is estimated to be 8 hours of use, implying a draw of approx. 0.71 amps, or 710 mA (5.67 Ah / 8h ≈ 0.71 A). There's nothing official listed on Yaesu's website yet, though, so it's all "back of the envelop math" until then.
I am betting though that the RX will consume ½ amp +/- depending on what all is turned on... doing some easy math based on advertised specs: battery 5.67Ah and 9 hours = 630mA/hr.
I love my icom ic-705 but I will not say that it doesn't have flaws. This yaesu has me very tempted but I don't want a divorce getting it. Really tempted.
Could the rx power consumption be high because they used a cheaper circuit? Or could there be some technical advantage to the high power consumption they chose?
If the FTX-1F Receiver is on a Par with the FT-710 / FTDX-10, it will be a Game changer For me, Bluetooth/WiFi are nice to have, but not Show Stoppers.
Honestly, I'm more curious in its current consumption and battery life. Yaesu is notorious for inefficient radios, on transmit and receive. Hopefully they'll step up the game.
@@OH8STN I suspect it will be higher than IC-705, Higher Spec DSP, Dual Receiver, Dual Speakers, and all that that adds From the picture floating on the Web, the Bolt-On's derive power from the Radio, hence the 80% bigger Battery. I'm going to guess it will draw on External Power 2.4~2.6A @ 13.8V
@@OH8STN I should have stated, that current is Full Keydown TX, I think RX / idle will be @ 400mA Again for me, I never solely rely on Built in Battery, at a minimum I always have a small 8Ah LiFePo4
@4X4-RADIO Yeah, it's the same for me. The thing about efficiency is it's complicated. Even if we're using an external battery, if the current consumption of the radio is too high, we quickly deplete that battery, whether it's internal or external. The thing about the tx500 and the ic-705 is that they have extremely low current consumption, both rx & tx. I would even go as far as to say the 705 is The Benchmark to beat. Even with Wi-Fi and bluetooth, wireless data, it's still runs at under 300 milliamps. The efficiency is also good for the Elecraft kx2, though it doesn't have the same feature set. If the current consumption is too high, we find ourselves needing to carry larger, heavier battery packs for longer run time in the field. We also have to pay attention to the transmit current at full output power. For example, the PA 500 amplifier can put out to 60 watts with under 10 amps. The expedition model 100 watts at under 12 amps. Xiegu G90 puts out 20 watts at under 4 amps. I think if this radio takes more, it's okay since it's just a hobby radio. But if we're going to be doing serious field work with it for extended periods of time, we'll need to find a way to reconcile the higher current consumption. Apologies if I'm rambling but the reason this is important to me is because I use these radios for survival. Carrying an additional heavy battery, means I have to leave something else behind. That might be additional food, additional water, or some tools or equipment I would rather carry than the bigger battery pack. Even with the dual rx, it's not full duplex so it's not really important for me. If it were full duplex that feature alone would make me more forgiving for the high current consumption.
I don't guess I understand the fascination with QRP, what exactly can a QRP radio do that a FULL Power radio can't?? I mean rally how much weight would it add to the radio just to have FULL power capabilities? You can always turn the power down to whatever QRP level you wish to work at, can you not??
@@Blake-jl8lh Just exactly how much "REAL WORLD" difference are we talking about, NOT BATTERY, that's just a matter of how much run time do we want, but the actual weight of the radio it's self??
It can fit in a human carryable backpack with its antenna and power supply? Try operating on in the field ( on foot like a soldier would) with a 100w radio and it's required battery. In less than 1 outing I'm pretty sure you will come to understand quickly
@@ryany4326 Once again, I'm NOT considering the BATTERY, that's purely job specific, if you're gonna pack it around, put a small battery in and run the power low. When I want FULL power I don't plan to be carrying it. The point being ONE full power radio can fulfill BOTH use cases, a QRP radio will never be a full power rig
@@dannydivine7699 Its a very very big difference. Ignoring power, which is a silly thing to ignore because the radio needs it, the transistors in the amps get hotter. So now you need bigger heat syncs and more air flow. One "issue" with the 891 is it gets really hot if you push a lot of power through it.
I know Japan doesn't have the same bands as the US, but i'd love to see the 220 band. I assume it has Fusion. what would impress the #@&& out of me is if they also had DMR & M17. I want a true multi-mode. I like D-Star, but it's propritary and i've been told DMR isn't. A tuner option is nice, but I'm a big fan of the swr scanner on the X6100. it's just easier to watch and adjust at the same time. I own mostly Icom's and have never been a fan of the bar-graph SWR.
I think the biggest issue with this radio is that they took so long to bring it to market. Yaesu had enough time to listen to what people didn't like about the 705 and improve upon it. Icom did all of their market research for them and did not listen, disappointing. I have been waiting for Yaesu's response to the 705 before committing to a new qrp rig, and it wont be the ftx-1f.
Pretty but useless, I've done more with my new ft 891 in 2 months than I've done with the 705 in 2 years. What I'd love is a ft891 update with lower power draw on rx. All these small power 10w radios are just too low power, the G90 is in a league of its own.
@@OH8STN yeah I know but here in Australia I feel I need the power. I'll see what I get on my first pota next weekend :) hopefully a few hours. I love it over my 705 so far.
@mindfulmunchkin1215 Your IC-705 with an external PA500 amplifier wouldn't be cost effective, but hugely more efficient. I loved the 891 as well, but couldn't reconcile its current consumption :(
I have a FT891 and absolutely love this radio. Very capable and compact... But I agree with Julian about the power consumption. It's pretty high for the delivered power. But excellent for having in the car or as a base station.
The feature I see as critical, that existed on the 817 is at least two antenna conectors, that are user selectable as to what band a given connector handles. You build a radio that goes from 160 meters to 440 mhz and have ONE antenna connector ? Really Icom ???? This radio has two receivers. We need at least two antenna ports.
how readable is the color display in normal outdoor sunlight? I have an HT (Wouxun KG-UV9K) with color display that is totally unreadable outdoors in normal daylight conditions. I bought for satellite comms outdoors during the day. I was unable to return the radio to the seller. Otherwise nice radio, dual trx airband 8.33khz step etc. But the totally awful display makes it a POS. I wrote many emails to Wouxun . I have not received a reply to any of them. My advice before you buy any radio with color display, take it outdoors in the sunlight. My Baofeng UV 5R has a readable display outdoors.
What a disappointment, we already have the IC705, why do we need a Yaesu copy of the Icom radio. Yaesu seems to lack any form of creativity or imagination, they just slavishly "copy" what is already available.. Perhaps Yaesu should have looked at the TX550 from 599 Labs and tried to better it. Receive current should be below 100 mA (150 mA max). Regards, VK1XP
How do we know those features exist or not? The only one I'm certain doesn't exist after publishing this video is full duplex. After 818, we know they will do the least amount possible to put a portable radio out. I've basically already lost faith. Still hoping for better from Yaesu.
@@OH8STN we do t, that was my comment. You kept saying how they will add vs. hope they have. If they need to add something that is years out and a different model. I do hope it is full duplex for the Sat people. They have t had a radio in a while and they would be the small group that would buy this weird radio. Only thing I see I wish my 705 had was the 2 antenna ports but my HT really takes care of that need most of the time.
@@Qwiv I read a comment from someone who attended the Tokyo Hamfair. He questioned a Yaesu engineer about full-duplex and apparently confirmed it's to be a full-duplex radio. People should realize the press release and samples on display at Tokyo are just a teaser. Yaesu is still finalizing all the specs and features.

Dual Antenna Sockets, Bolt-On ATU, 80% Bigger Battery, 70MHz / 4M
C4FM, Have local Nets on 10M/6M, more convenient than my FT-991A
I hope they expose the GPS Data via USB, like the IC-705(Port B), Time sync for Laptop using BKTimeSync
I did notice a Rubber Flap, "GPS", looks like you can add an "External GPS Antenna"
RE: USB-C PD
If they Implemented USB-C PD rather than just USB-C Charge
If you plugged the Radio into Laptop which was also USB-C PD
I believe they would try to charge from each other.
Thanks phil. I read that the radio is not full duplex, despite having two independent receivers.
Thanks! That would be about Yaesu 'standard' for their past field radios. I'm equally as curious about TX efficiency.
Thanks
I am betting though that the RX will consume ½ amp +/- depending on what all is turned on...
doing some easy math based on advertised specs:
battery 5.67Ah and 9 hours = 630mA/hr.
That's RX only. How efficient the TX current consumption is is also extremely important.
For me it needs 100w and full duplex, so I can use it in the shack as a competitor to the 9700.
Yeah, hopefully it doesn't drift either without a William Bodnar oscillator....
If it’s $1400, it can’t be a replacement for the 818.
USD$$$ are a lot weaker than 2000 when the 817 came out.
Yaesu confirmed this does NOT do full duplex operation at the Tokyo Ham Fair
If that's true, they're not going to get my money. :(
Mine either, only reason I would buy is for satcom and since no full duplex, Is a waste for me . Its basically a 705 to me
source?
So the same old thing in a new package: typical.
Interesting… I was sure that Yaesu confirmed that it was full duplex. Oh well, one of us will be right…
If the FTX-1F Receiver is on a Par with the FT-710 / FTDX-10, it will be a Game changer
For me, Bluetooth/WiFi are nice to have, but not Show Stoppers.
Honestly, I'm more curious in its current consumption and battery life. Yaesu is notorious for inefficient radios, on transmit and receive. Hopefully they'll step up the game.
@@OH8STN
I suspect it will be higher than IC-705, Higher Spec DSP, Dual Receiver, Dual Speakers, and all that that adds
From the picture floating on the Web, the Bolt-On's derive power from the Radio, hence the 80% bigger Battery.
I'm going to guess it will draw on External Power 2.4~2.6A @ 13.8V
@4X4-RADIO if true, that would be a total deal-breaker for many of us.
@@OH8STN I should have stated, that current is Full Keydown TX, I think RX / idle will be @ 400mA
Again for me, I never solely rely on Built in Battery, at a minimum I always have a small 8Ah LiFePo4
You can always turn the power down to whatever QRP level you wish to work at, can you not??
weight.
One "issue" with the 891 is it gets really hot if you push a lot of power through it.
we have placed a deposit cannot wait
I know Japan doesn't have the same bands as the US, but i'd love to see the 220 band.
I assume it has Fusion. what would impress the #@&& out of me is if they also had DMR & M17.
I want a true multi-mode. I like D-Star, but it's propritary and i've been told DMR isn't.
A tuner option is nice, but I'm a big fan of the swr scanner on the X6100. it's just easier to watch
and adjust at the same time. I own mostly Icom's and have never been a fan of the bar-graph SWR.
Um... Yawn... FT-817ND Forever!! Better form factor too. I find the 705 and now this one (a mee too?) just clunky. Jerry wa2omu
Indeed, it seems they haven't been paying attention.
Subbed!
Welcome!
It is usb C
We don't know yet 🤔
The ftx would need to cost hundreds less than the 705 to be able to compete with the 705 with the features that have beem released.
Indeed
Pretty but useless, I've done more with my new ft 891 in 2 months than I've done with the 705 in 2 years. What I'd love is a ft891 update with lower power draw on rx. All these small power 10w radios are just too low power, the G90 is in a league of its own.
FT-891 - 1-2A on RX, 20-23A on TX. Check how much your 891 pulls at 5-watts. RX-TX efficiency are horrific on the 891. Sadly, this is typical Yaesu.
10 watts can get you pretty far in a field radio. What antenna are you rocking?
icom ic 705 VS yaesu ftx-1f ??? 😂
Jast Throughway
Lifes to short for QRP. Give it to me in a 100watt version. Replace the old FT-857
Why only 10w? That’s a no for me.
how readable is the color display in normal outdoor sunlight? I have an HT (Wouxun KG-UV9K) with color display that is totally unreadable outdoors in normal daylight conditions. I bought for satellite comms outdoors during the day. I was unable to return the radio to the seller. Otherwise nice radio, dual trx airband 8.33khz step etc. But the totally awful display makes it a POS. I wrote many emails to Wouxun . I have not received a reply to any of them. My advice before you buy any radio with color display, take it outdoors in the sunlight. My Baofeng UV 5R has a readable display outdoors.
Don’t think this is an 817/818 replacement

What a disappointment, we already have the IC705, why do we need a Yaesu copy of the Icom radio. Yaesu seems to lack any form of creativity or imagination, they just slavishly "copy" what is already available.. Perhaps Yaesu should have looked at the TX550 from 599 Labs and tried to better it. Receive current should be below 100 mA (150 mA max). Regards, VK1XP
Yaesu won't stand by their warranty
Agreed. It was also the case back in the day when their repair facility was in Cerritos California. EU and UK service are also terrible.
Ultimate at QRP whatever.
6w output are they having a laugh ?.
It doesn't even meet up with the foundation license power limit for the UK.,.
Pretty but useless!!!!
What a shame
no CW DECODER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not waterproof or rugged, poor battery better off with my tx500
LOL 🤣
You are asking them to add features to a radio that already exists btw.
@@jamesseaman2950 so I should trust information from a guy who k owns a guy who talked to another guy. Sounds like everything wrong with the world, youtube and the media.
From the description, I believe and hope it is, but I don’t care enough either.
If you are rich and don't mind paying a fortune for a low power radio.
I hope it is competitively priced. My guess it will be on the USA market by June 2025. Can't wait to see one in person.
Indeed, if they price it competitively and it also has full duplex for satellite comms, I'd pull the trigger on one for transponder work.
@@OH8STN There is no full duplex like the 9700 as i far as i know, you can not hear your own signal during TX.
Thx 👍
Looks like a cool little rig , I will keep rocking my 817nd . I have an 991 (not a ) and wish I’d never sold a brand new 897 that was given to me along with an icom hf rig. Don’t remember the model but it was along the same timeframe as the 897. I sold both to some old hams . I like the waterfall idea and the size but for me it’s just like chasing IPhones or Android phones. I’m so over that so unless someone comes out with something that is light years ahead of everything else I will let the dick measuring crowd have this radio.
Well said! Like you, I regret selling my FT-897. That rig was incredible! It was truly a 'field radio'. I wish Yaesu would have modernized the FT-897 concept.
