My opinion: after comparing and driving the new Tacoma and Colorado, I ordered the Ranger Lariat 2.7. Each truck has its good points, but the Ranger is simply a better truck overall…..in my opinion.

If ford would offer a 6 cylinder naturally aspirated engine it would be better. I'm not interested in 4 cylinder turbocharged engines that will have mega problems. The truck is good looking and i would also like to see a 8ft bed single cab configuration. You know like my 1977 f100 with the V8. That old girl was bulletproof with the 351 Windsor. Oh well those days are gone.😟

I seriously don’t understand why every auto maker is bandwagoning on integrating their moderately slow operating iPad displays in their current generation cars. If they’re going to do that regardless of what people want couldn’t they at least be engineered better like Tesla. 🤦♂️
Can you review the 6 cylinder please in relation to the transmission, when towing. I’ve heard it’s extremely hot and subject to breaking down at 85ks. I tow and don’t want the hassle if the rumours are true?
That does sound fun, but so far I haven’t done anything with towing on my channel. I would redirect you to a channel like TFL who does really good towing tests up one of the high mountain passes in Colorado. That would be a much better and more extreme test than I would have access to around here anyways. Best of luck and I hope you can find what you’re looking for.
Can somebody in a new RANGER give us a review on the transmission. Everyone reviews vehicle all nice and shinny and off the shelf. I want to know down the track on issues like the transmission 80k to go bang on you after around 85,000. Surely someone out there can be honest and tell us not when they first pick it up and not tested. SOMEONE TELL US
I really disliked the portrait mode screen, as well as its location. Instead of just gazing across, I was looking slightly down at it. Also the XLT I drove felt so bare bones in features. You mean for $46K I can’t even get vents for rear passengers?? I’m really thinking truck buyers get shafted on interiors when compared to less expensive vehicles in other categories.
I prefer the center console to be low. I don't like the huge center consoles that come up high and cut into your front seat leg room. I hate it when I feel like my legs are down in hole.

Ford Ranger also did not do well during the 2019-2023 period due to a few things, parts used for say the Lariat were used instead for the Bronco or Maverick, IE LED headlights...but more importantly ford put Bronco on blast during that time rather than the ranger...trust me I was looking for a Ranger and finally found one in Oct of 22 but every time I called the dealers had nothing in stock but "Some were on the way!" I think the 4th gen front is better looking, but the cluster is great on this 5th gen on thing I think they didn't fix, that was sort of pointed out was the how low the middle part of the truck is, and the door panel...ugh, they're both at different levels, I didn't notice it when I bought the truck but now I know it...never had a vehicle where if I wanted to put my elbows on door and center and they're at different levels....it's annoying

I did actually move the seat around a little bit, but still to me it felt like you’re sitting on top of the vehicle rather than sunken into it. Not necessarily a bad thing, it was just that paired with the styling of the center console and infotainment display I wasn’t a big fan of that combination. Overall, it was a pretty fun truck to drive. 🙂
There is a lever to lower seat. You do know that? IMO, Ranger has the most comfortable seats in class. I've sat in them all and the Ford is the best by a long shot.
Yeah, I do, but thank you for sharing that! I had it lowered just a bit from how it was when I first got into the truck. For whatever reason though it still just didn’t feel right to me. 🤷♂️
@@AutomotiveAnonymous208 probably your body habitus. By any chance have you been driving a tacoma? In that cabin you sit on the floor with legs straight out. I can't stand that but some might be used to that. You definitely won't like a range rover. You sit almost upright on that.
I’ve actually driven about 75k miles in Tacomas (I use to own a second and third gen). But that was way before I started making car videos part time. I would be curious to see how those trucks feel now that I have my current perspectives and experiences to draw from. They were both manuals, and I’m sure the shifter throw length and numbness would feel very disappointing lol. 😂
Have you reviewed a Colorado like this? The Z71 model? Like to see the lariat vs the Z71 and how they stack up! I think the Colorado looks better and the interior seems to look more pleasing. But I like how Ranger has more engine options….this black Ranger does look good though…

I also have a couple ZR2 Bison videos to put out soon, but I do need to find a Z71 and Trailboss to film. The mid sized truck market sure has become competitive in the last couple years, lol. Toyota screwed the pooch on their 4 cyl love. Their max engine has some seriously bloated power numbers to perform so poorly, and the price... it's priced as if it's the only midsize worth buying and it's really a three way tie for second after ford. The 2.7L V6 is going to be the one to find, with far less vanity markup on pricing.
I like it from what I’ve seen even though I’ve not seen one yet here on Cape Cod….I like that it has Amber Turn Lamps on the tail lights ….no one seems to highlight that fact which is very important to me and it’s the ONLY midsize truck to have them….I prefer knobs for a radio for sure VS a touch screen and the truck needs rear AC vents …I believe the Australian Ranger has them but not in the US….
Contractors will thank Ford this feature: 48.2” between the rear wheelhouses, this is new for this generation. That means it’s 4x8 friendly; can’t say that for the Tacoma, Frontier, Colorado or Canyon. Bonus point: the vents on the front fenders are functional. I discovered that after a test drive and felt warm air coming from them. Nits: Digital speedo readout is way too large. It screams at you. On my car, a Subaru Crosstrek, the readout is about 1/3 the size. It whispers to the driver, and is much more pleasant and less distracting. Rear seat should have a 60/40 split. Only the Raptor has a 4WD Auto mode. That should be available on all 4WD models. I think the factory navigation is subscription-based. I don’t like that. Wish they had retained the steel front bumper that the previous generation had. Yeah, I know the Raptor has a steel front bumper.
They need to bring back a real “small” truck. Gas prices suck. A truck that can off-road, be decent at a tailgate with some good speakers, take a dead deer in the bed, and not be an ordeal to fit into a city parking garage.
Of course! I try to include that photo in every full review video I do. Usually the numbers I find on the door are somewhat far off what Google provided payload numbers are for whatever reason. There must be a lot of variation between trim levels and options. 🙂

I have found the “max” payload advertised by the manufacturer to be a bogus number in terms of real world payload. Very few people will buy a base trim, no optioned, standard cab pickup and most dealers don’t stock them. Typically, as the options and trims go up, payload goes down. I have seen $70K luxury trucks with less than 1,000 lbs of payload. Completely unusable for my needs. Thanks again.

But I try to include the payload on every truck. And like you said, when I’ve reviewed Silverado ZR2 Bisons they have a 1,048 payload lol 😂

It really needs a 4-Auto mode for us in MN. It is a deal breaker for me and I'm not getting a Raptor for that feature alone. Toyota only has it on the Limited at $55K+, but the GM twins have it all the way down the trim levels. It is a bit of a bummer because I really like this Ford. I'm also not interested in the Ridgeline. Maybe the Maverick really is always the answer...

I test drove a Ranger XLT FX4 last weekend thinking it was the one because it had the least worst back seat (I’m 6-3), better fuel mileage, and the fold down back seat. Wasn’t that bothered by the iPad screen until I test drove a Colorado Z71 right after. MUCH better layout for the screen. Totally worth giving up a headlight switch and some back seat utility.

I will say after driving a few Teslas and what I’ve seen in my brothers Model Y Performance their screen and software is way better than any other auto makers vehicle I’ve driven. But I still prefer physical knobs and buttons.
@@AutomotiveAnonymous208 When you add tons of weight with the underpinnings it always takes away from capacity. This effects ALL oems. P4X, ZR2, Raptor, TRD pro etc.. all suck as far as tow/bed capacity. But that is not what they were built for.
💯 but I still think the ZR2 payload rating is funny. 😆 I’ve reviewed a Raptor R but I can’t remember what its actual sticker rating was, so it must have not been terribly low to not be memorable. Both were very fun off road trucks.
@@AutomotiveAnonymous208 Ranger Raptor has payload of 1411 lbs and 5510 tow. Raptor probably has higher bed capacity because normally can carry 1860 which is impressive for a mid size. You can also put a pallet of pellets in that but not quite. Also I'm surprised the Raptor can only tow 5510 lbs. Even my 2019 Pro 4X can has a tow capacity of 6100 lbs. Personally if I bought the Ranger I'd get the base 2.3 eco. Its the most reliable motor Ford makes. That 3 liter is nice and has allot of power but has historically had problems. Even the 2.7 has been trash in allot of the broncos. Nope, that 2.3 is the way to go and it still has the same tow/carry numbers. I also test drove a ZR 2 back in 2019 and agree that suspension amazing. Those multimatic shocks is like riding on air. My dealer has three of them for 49K bucks. Its tempting considering how expensive the raptor and TRD pro are going to be.
My first pick-up truck was a used 1987 stripo Ranger reg cab. Compared to this new one it's like one of those 6v battery kiddie cars by today's standards. This new Ranger is still smaller than an F150 for sure but it's not a small truck.
That’s a good question but in my couple hours with the truck I wouldn’t have been able to get an accurate reading with how much idle and acceleration time the truck received.
In the Philippines, the Ranger XLT interior is filled with cheap hard plastics at the same price and only a 2.0L engine! Such a rip-off! I've decided to buy a Chevrolet TrailBlazer.
Haha, this was definitely not the best video I’ve put together. It was incredibly windy when I filmed this, and the microphone I had at the time was not as good at noise reduction as my newest one so I felt like I had to talk quickly for the wind noise to not be as bad as it would have been. 🤦♂️😅 But also I was way out in the country and might have had to also pee, that part I don’t remember. 😜
It seems like most automakers are starting to push that style of infotainment screen. I don’t recall if it’s the NCAP or some other EU testing organization that’s recently took a stand from some features not being screen controlled for the vehicle to be able to be rated with the highest safety ratings. So there is hope, lol. Screens look good, but we’re already surrounded by to many screens in life. 😬

My opinion: after comparing and driving the new Tacoma and Colorado, I ordered the Ranger Lariat 2.7. Each truck has its good points, but the Ranger is simply a better truck overall…..in my opinion.

If ford would offer a 6 cylinder naturally aspirated engine it would be better. I'm not interested in 4 cylinder turbocharged engines that will have mega problems. The truck is good looking and i would also like to see a 8ft bed single cab configuration. You know like my 1977 f100 with the V8. That old girl was bulletproof with the 351 Windsor. Oh well those days are gone.😟
That would be sweet! They had the fuel efficient and powerful 3.7 from the Mustang and a few other platforms that made over 300hp. It’s still a relevant engine, that would have been a good one! Thanks for watching. 🙂

Can you review the 6 cylinder please in relation to the transmission, when towing. I’ve heard it’s extremely hot and subject to breaking down at 85ks. I tow and don’t want the hassle if the rumours are true?
That does sound fun, but so far I haven’t done anything with towing on my channel. I would redirect you to a channel like TFL who does really good towing tests up one of the high mountain passes in Colorado. That would be a much better and more extreme test than I would have access to around here anyways. Best of luck and I hope you can find what you’re looking for.
Can somebody in a new RANGER give us a review on the transmission. Everyone reviews vehicle all nice and shinny and off the shelf. I want to know down the track on issues like the transmission 80k to go bang on you after around 85,000. Surely someone out there can be honest and tell us not when they first pick it up and not tested. SOMEONE TELL US
I really disliked the portrait mode screen, as well as its location. Instead of just gazing across, I was looking slightly down at it.
Also the XLT I drove felt so bare bones in features. You mean for $46K I can’t even get vents for rear passengers?? I’m really thinking truck buyers get shafted on interiors when compared to less expensive vehicles in other categories.

I prefer the center console to be low. I don't like the huge center consoles that come up high and cut into your front seat leg room. I hate it when I feel like my legs are down in hole.

Ford Ranger also did not do well during the 2019-2023 period due to a few things, parts used for say the Lariat were used instead for the Bronco or Maverick, IE LED headlights...but more importantly ford put Bronco on blast during that time rather than the ranger...trust me I was looking for a Ranger and finally found one in Oct of 22 but every time I called the dealers had nothing in stock but "Some were on the way!"
I think the 4th gen front is better looking, but the cluster is great on this 5th gen
on thing I think they didn't fix, that was sort of pointed out was the how low the middle part of the truck is, and the door panel...ugh, they're both at different levels, I didn't notice it when I bought the truck but now I know it...never had a vehicle where if I wanted to put my elbows on door and center and they're at different levels....it's annoying

Perhaps the seat was set high. It can be lowered.
I did actually move the seat around a little bit, but still to me it felt like you’re sitting on top of the vehicle rather than sunken into it. Not necessarily a bad thing, it was just that paired with the styling of the center console and infotainment display I wasn’t a big fan of that combination. Overall, it was a pretty fun truck to drive. 🙂
There is a lever to lower seat. You do know that? IMO, Ranger has the most comfortable seats in class. I've sat in them all and the Ford is the best by a long shot.
Yeah, I do, but thank you for sharing that! I had it lowered just a bit from how it was when I first got into the truck. For whatever reason though it still just didn’t feel right to me. 🤷♂️
@@AutomotiveAnonymous208 probably your body habitus. By any chance have you been driving a tacoma? In that cabin you sit on the floor with legs straight out. I can't stand that but some might be used to that. You definitely won't like a range rover. You sit almost upright on that.
I’ve actually driven about 75k miles in Tacomas (I use to own a second and third gen). But that was way before I started making car videos part time. I would be curious to see how those trucks feel now that I have my current perspectives and experiences to draw from. They were both manuals, and I’m sure the shifter throw length and numbness would feel very disappointing lol. 😂
Have you reviewed a Colorado like this? The Z71 model? Like to see the lariat vs the Z71 and how they stack up! I think the Colorado looks better and the interior seems to look more pleasing. But I like how Ranger has more engine options….this black Ranger does look good though…
Last year I did a review of a red one, but without clicking on it I myself don’t remember what trim level because I didn’t title it 🤦♂️. I also have a couple ZR2 Bison videos to put out soon, but I do need to find a Z71 and Trailboss to film. The mid sized truck market sure has become competitive in the last couple years, lol. Toyota screwed the pooch on their 4 cyl love. Their max engine has some seriously bloated power numbers to perform so poorly, and the price... it's priced as if it's the only midsize worth buying and it's really a three way tie for second after ford. The 2.7L V6 is going to be the one to find, with far less vanity markup on pricing.
I like it from what I’ve seen even though I’ve not seen one yet here on Cape Cod….I like that it has Amber Turn Lamps on the tail lights ….no one seems to highlight that fact which is very important to me and it’s the ONLY midsize truck to have them….I prefer knobs for a radio for sure VS a touch screen and the truck needs rear AC vents …I believe the Australian Ranger has them but not in the US….

Contractors will thank Ford this feature: 48.2” between the rear wheelhouses, this is new for this generation. That means it’s 4x8 friendly; can’t say that for the Tacoma, Frontier, Colorado or Canyon.
Bonus point: the vents on the front fenders are functional. I discovered that after a test drive and felt warm air coming from them.
Nits:
Digital speedo readout is way too large. It screams at you. On my car, a Subaru Crosstrek, the readout is about 1/3 the size. It whispers to the driver, and is much more pleasant and less distracting.
Rear seat should have a 60/40 split.
Only the Raptor has a 4WD Auto mode. That should be available on all 4WD models.
I think the factory navigation is subscription-based. I don’t like that.
Wish they had retained the steel front bumper that the previous generation had. Yeah, I know the Raptor has a steel front bumper.

Of course! I try to include that photo in every full review video I do. Usually the numbers I find on the door are somewhat far off what Google provided payload numbers are for whatever reason. There must be a lot of variation between trim levels and options. 🙂

I have found the “max” payload advertised by the manufacturer to be a bogus number in terms of real world payload. Very few people will buy a base trim, no optioned, standard cab pickup and most dealers don’t stock them. Typically, as the options and trims go up, payload goes down. I have seen $70K luxury trucks with less than 1,000 lbs of payload. Completely unusable for my needs. Thanks again.

It really needs a 4-Auto mode for us in MN. It is a deal breaker for me and I'm not getting a Raptor for that feature alone. Toyota only has it on the Limited at $55K+, but the GM twins have it all the way down the trim levels. It is a bit of a bummer because I really like this Ford. I'm also not interested in the Ridgeline. Maybe the Maverick really is always the answer...

Ford has done a great job with this new ranger but if they want to lead or be a serious contender they really need to offer a six foot bed

I test drove a Ranger XLT FX4 last weekend thinking it was the one because it had the least worst back seat (I’m 6-3), better fuel mileage, and the fold down back seat. Wasn’t that bothered by the iPad screen until I test drove a Colorado Z71 right after. MUCH better layout for the screen. Totally worth giving up a headlight switch and some back seat utility.

That vertical screen is horrible. Just like it's horrible in Teslas....
I will say after driving a few Teslas and what I’ve seen in my brothers Model Y Performance their screen and software is way better than any other auto makers vehicle I’ve driven. But I still prefer physical knobs and buttons.
What's really terrible is Elon Musk.
The payload is only 1500 lbs while the taco is 1200 across trims 😂

@@AutomotiveAnonymous208 When you add tons of weight with the underpinnings it always takes away from capacity. This effects ALL oems. P4X, ZR2, Raptor, TRD pro etc.. all suck as far as tow/bed capacity. But that is not what they were built for.
💯 but I still think the ZR2 payload rating is funny. 😆 I’ve reviewed a Raptor R but I can’t remember what its actual sticker rating was, so it must have not been terribly low to not be memorable. Both were very fun off road trucks.
@@AutomotiveAnonymous208 Ranger Raptor has payload of 1411 lbs and 5510 tow. Raptor probably has higher bed capacity because normally can carry 1860 which is impressive for a mid size. You can also put a pallet of pellets in that but not quite. Also I'm surprised the Raptor can only tow 5510 lbs. Even my 2019 Pro 4X can has a tow capacity of 6100 lbs. Personally if I bought the Ranger I'd get the base 2.3 eco. Its the most reliable motor Ford makes. That 3 liter is nice and has allot of power but has historically had problems. Even the 2.7 has been trash in allot of the broncos. Nope, that 2.3 is the way to go and it still has the same tow/carry numbers. I also test drove a ZR 2 back in 2019 and agree that suspension amazing. Those multimatic shocks is like riding on air. My dealer has three of them for 49K bucks. Its tempting considering how expensive the raptor and TRD pro are going to be.

Compared to a third gen Ranger this feels like a super duty lol.
My first pick-up truck was a used 1987 stripo Ranger reg cab. Compared to this new one it's like one of those 6v battery kiddie cars by today's standards. This new Ranger is still smaller than an F150 for sure but it's not a small truck.
I would get a ranger, but the price is outrageous, and Interest rates are stupid. I would love a Ranger raptor. but gotta keep dreaming.

That’s a good question but in my couple hours with the truck I wouldn’t have been able to get an accurate reading with how much idle and acceleration time the truck received.

Altitude doesn’t affect the turbos as much as it does the naturally aspirated engines.
In the Philippines, the Ranger XLT interior is filled with cheap hard plastics at the same price and only a 2.0L engine! Such a rip-off!

Haha, this was definitely not the best video I’ve put together. It was incredibly windy when I filmed this, and the microphone I had at the time was not as good at noise reduction as my newest one so I felt like I had to talk quickly for the wind noise to not be as bad as it would have been. 🤦♂️😅 But also I was way out in the country and might have had to also pee, that part I don’t remember. 😜

It seems like most automakers are starting to push that style of infotainment screen. I don’t recall if it’s the NCAP or some other EU testing organization that’s recently took a stand from some features not being screen controlled for the vehicle to be able to be rated with the highest safety ratings. So there is hope, lol. Screens look good, but we’re already surrounded by to many screens in life. 😬
