2024 Ford Ranger XLT 4x4 is Right-Sized Capability

- Is F-150 is too big? Maverick too small? The new 2024 Ford Ranger is a tiny bit larger than the outgoing model and that adds big benefits. 4-foot-wide material sheets load between the wheel wells. The cabin gets a more inviting look. It has the smoothest turbocharged 4-cylinder engine in its class. It goes down the road in a relaxed manner (due in part to its mid-sized form factor). Tom Voelk checks out a well-equipped XLT 4x4.

Tom you are one of the best automotive journalists/reviewers on youtube. Have been watching you since your NY Times days.
No gimmicks and antics like most. Just genuine and rational real world evaluations and advice that work for 99% of car buyers.
I like the mid-size truck group. I just downsized from a Ford F250. No longer needed the big towing capacity and wife didn't like driving the super duty. Looked at Maverick, Tacoma, Ranger, etc. We ended up getting a 2024 Honda Ridgeline. It tows our small boat, leather interior, AWD and V6 for about $42k. No off-roading, so Ridgeline fit the bill for smoother ride. My ego would love a Ford Raptor, but I have a Ridgeline lifestyle.
No, you are the TOM VOELK of cars! I'm sure many reviewers aspire to be like you😊
Will be buying a mid-size truck in the coming months for travel and towing a small camper. It is going to be a serious face off between Ranger and Tacoma. May the best truck win!
The Tacoma towing capacity is only 6500 lbs. The Ranger is 7500 lbs and has a lot bigger payload than Tacoma as well. So it's not really even a competition.
@@mikegrantham7440 Thanks. The camper is 3000 lbs so I think we're in the ballpark with either. Currently towing with Ridgeline (max 5000 lbs) which is just adequate but the torque on the Taco and Ranger is much higher and should be an improvement on hills and highway over the Honda.
Wait for the 2.7L. The towing tech in the ranger is head and shoulders above the taco.
Nice review. Glad you choose the Ranger to review and got a mid-level trim. Like to see more of these from your channel. Might help you improve your subscriber numbers.
Good review that was more focused on how it drives than many other reviews.
Epic editing Tom, production values are their usual top notch.
Great video, thanks Tom.
Thanks for the feedback on the XLT stereo sound. I know it may not be the higher end BO system with more speakers, but it's nice to know its still reasonably good. I am old school when stereo meant including a left and right channel speaker.
Tom - We know who you ARE. Doesn’t matter for a second who you aren’t. Keep the excellent objective reviews with insights coming. Thank you!!
nice and very great presentation, way of your communication is marvellous.
good morning and God bless.... thanks for the videos
I think I like the Azure Gray in the sun, but not so much in low light. What do you think about it?
I ❤ this truck!.can't wait for the USA version of the Tremor(the African version doesn't have the gold/orange grill accent).😢
Thanks!
Damn flexing on the size 11 shoe, my boy packin'!!!
you are the Roger Federer of car reviews :)
Glad that smaller trucks are picking up steam. I'd still like a truck the size of my 79' Toyota pickup. Maverick is probably the best we'll get or the cartrucks like Santa Cruz.
2:38 On a side note, those Nike shoes are nice! Just ordered a pair
Thanks
Im all in...on the Colorado.
🔥🔥🔥🔥
I hate the modern truck market. Everyone has abandoned the working man. They are all too expensive.
@6:12 you begin talking about the Honda Ridgeline in the voiceover. Is this a mistake?
No. Why?
It seemed a nonsequitor.
Midgate/seats should fold to make room for long stuff
Love it and just took order of mine.... I couldnt be more pleased with it. Great review Tom, as always !
This will probably be about the last non-electric car or truck review I watch. 20 mpg has always been awful, well today it's disgraceful. Our clan has had many Ford pickups over the decades. Still have an aging F150 we share for infrequent chores. I realize the US transition to electric has hit some speed bumps recently. And I'm not under the illusion that EVs will singlehandedly solve the climate problem. But something has to give , and if you can afford this truck, you can afford an EV. If you really need a pickup truck, get a hybrid or an electric. And if you really don't, well an EV car or suv is a much better driver than this will ever be. I just wish Ford had made an electric Ranger or Maverick rather than put a massive, expensive, slow charging battery in the plus size F150. I would even pick up a used Lightning at current prices, but its just too big. One last thing: electrics sales have slowed for one reason: the manufacturers haven't bulit any chargers. Unlike Tesla, Ford, GM, and the rest have invested exactly zero in public chargers. Yeah guess what, very few people want your EV with nowhere to charge. VW built a few but nowhere near enough.
Sat in it at the New York International Auto Show. Very comfortable. The Colorado was awful for me. Very cramped and A-pillars were huge causing a massive blind spot. Its too bad as i liked the big 4 in the Colorado.
I remember being a kid when my dad was shopping for a pickup truck. The F150 from the 80’s with super cab was a neat truck and a 4x8 sheet plywood fit between the wheels. I bet the new ranger is the same size as an ‘86 F150 super cab Lariat! I long for that F150…
Nice review. Personally I love everything Ford did here. Im a little surprised a sunroof isn't offered.
"MARCUS BROWNLEE" LOL
Right?
47k for a 4 cylinder 4wd XLT ranger is outrageous. I’d go XL 4wd with a E-lockers and call it good for 39k. To me that’s still too much for an extry level 4wd little pickup. The maverick was supposed to be the dirt cheap truck but they raised the price on those nearly 6k from what they promised at launch.
You should review the 2024 Ridgeline
You should check this channel out tomorrow
Tom, You and I both know real Ford Rangers come from St Paul, Minnesota. 😁
True. For a year or so, I lived a mile from the plant.
@@DrivenCarReviews I am sure Minnesota misses you and the Twin Cities plant. 😥
It is easy to see how these are outselling the Tacoma so much more for your dollar
Right size in an extended cab with a six foot bed.
Recently drove cross-country back and forth and got a good view of the truck market. I took some joy in seeing, in every state along the way, all the unsold full-size pickups sitting in dealer lots. Between purchase price, fuel costs and maintenance, these unnecessarily large pickups (for most people) have become too expensive. Even this Ranger, when the term mid-sized is applied, seems rather large. There's a ready market for smaller trucks out there, at a reasonable price. The automotive management MBA-types who only live to maximize profits won't see or permit it.....but it's there.
I think when prices hit these insane prices that people who wanted a truck started to think "what do I actually need over what do I want" and the Maverick became super popular. 80K for a full size or 32K for a Maverick that does everything most people need.
@@danielrn133 The maverick WAS $22k , the XLT was like $25k. Now XLT is about $32k with all taxes and fees
I wouldn’t pay 32 for a mav
Full size trucks are selling for $9K off around me. They are nearly as efficient as these midsize trucks and a lot more capable. The Maverick is more what people expect in a small truck, which is why Ford sells all they can make.
I’ve always loved rangers. But they should never cost more than $16k.
no rear vents?? wtf
$47K?! Wow
It looks like a slightly more muscular Maverick. I can't get past the two black bars on the front end that look too long and are jutting into the headlights. They should have ended the black bars at the end of the grill instead of extending them into the headlights. Looks 7/10, engine 6/10, 4X4 = 7/10, price 5/10, Overall score 25/40 too techy no substance. Hopeful for future Fords.
What sneakers are you wearing? Look so comfortable. Good review. Im going to look at this for my next truck.
Nike ACG
Nike ACG Air Exploraid
Looks like the only problem with the new model is the oversized “infotainment” screen that lowers the overall safety ratings of vehicles significantly. It’s too bad you can’t opt out of the computer screen and minimize it.
Danke!
Bitte! Much appreciated volkerbr2002!
$47k cloth seats, keyed ignition, and no rear vents? Really?
I’d give up 6” of screen for push button start. $47,000 for a mid size with cloth seats is a bold ask. Nice review as always, Tom.
Push button start reduces security.
Have a 21 Ranger xlt fx4 it was 39k the same truck today is 43k
My F-150 XLT FX4 was $35K in 2018.
Got my 2019 F150 XLT, FX4, Sport, SuperCrew for $38,000 (sticker was $52k)
All these new mid sized trucks are great when only mildly specced in the 30s or low 40s. When they get into the mid 40s and above they lose a huge part of their appeal.
Looked in the engine, but couldn’t find very much reliability…
He pronounces his name as Mar-kez. That said, I've watched you for years, and love your videos!
with the accent on the second syllable. 😊
Shows how much I watch TH-cam...
Just can't understand why these don't have a sunroof optional! I really like this new generation!!
And I hope you make it to a million Tom!!!
Adds weight, lowers headroom,
and leaks causing mold.
Reduces structural integrity lessening handling.
@@nostradamus7648 Yep exactly right, I hate sunroofs. Also offers a lot less protection in a rollover.
That white interior has to suck to keep clean!
The black dash will show every bit of dust. The white seats will show dirt. The worst of both worlds.
We have the 2024 hybrid Maverick, and absolutely love it!
I found the colorado and tacoma too cramped with too small of beds, but the full size trucks are just behemoths now. This ranger is the perfect size truck. Way more comfortable and practical without being huge
I love the reference to the 1985 dimensions! I’ve suspected as much, but was too lazy to go look it up 😎
It's way too expensive for a midsize truck. Why is there no hybrid?
The real question is why does the Tacoma have a hybrid? It reduces payload and towing and costs more than it will ever return in efficiency. I like hybrids, but some make a lot more sense than others.
👍
“Pick-up trucks are a tool.” 😂 😂 If we could get an honest survey from full size truck owners, I’d wager 97% are lifestyle choices: keeping up with the neighbors. Which is fine in and of itself, but when an F150 gets a combined 20mpg and considering we’re warming the earth at a seemingly unstoppable rate, frankly that’s unconscionable.
Wrong. Try shopping for a used truck sometime. You'll find most of them are indeed used as trucks. And unless you are living in a studio apartment and riding public transportation, you have no moral high ground.
These emotional support vehicles are still a far cry from the genuine work trucks that only the Ford Maverick gets closest to
I would be most interested in an suv version of this.
Ford would love to sell you a Bronco then
Do a Google search for "2024 Ford Everest".
Here in 🇦🇺 only Raptor comes with V6 pattol other levels diesel only! Unfortunately
Hahaha…. I had to Google that Brownlee fella…. so I guess I’m older too!
Still cant even see one in Canada. Ford cant even build them.
exactly, saw one in Victoria, BC and I spoke to the guy, he waited 10 months for it arrive!! that is way too much for most folks to wait
Same here in California. All the dealer websites say in transit for the last six months.
9:28 Removed TWO very useful, 12 volt outlets by installing vertical screen. Excluding 2024 Ranger Raptor, other 2024 Ranger trim levels are modified 2023 5th Generation Rangers.
FWIW, there's a 12V outlet in the console
Ford is offering a compelling package...at an eye-watering price.
If you put every single package on it of course
That's the price these days, of all of them other than Frontier.
@@DrivenCarReviewsmeh.... if you add on all the fluff, sure 52k. No thank you. Didn't want to say it but after all the comparisons you can get the Colorado Trail Boss which is a 2" lifted work truck. All the hardware for truck purposes and leave out the software for that drive up the prices.... for 40k. Wasn't gonna go that direction but it looks like I will. Those prices at 50k, it's validation fluff.
Don't care. More awesome EV reviews!
This is now the best mid size truck!
Marques Brownlee? You're Tom, he's Marques...you do cars & trucks...he does phones and electronics.
The Ranger is OK but is way overpriced ($40-$60,000) for what it is...remember it's a Ford.
I disagree about the cloth material on the Ranger. Those seats are very nice and much more comfortable than the Tacoma or the Colorado. That alone is the reason why I decided to get a new Ranger over the competition. For me it was down to the Ranger and Colorado which have the best towing capacity in the mid-size segment. But the cloth material on the Colorado is rough as sandpaper and it did not have any height adjustment for the front passenger seat at any trim level. Even the manual seats on the Ranger have height adjustment and it also offers an electric front passenger seat as well. As for the Tacoma, it is kind of ugly to me and the dash in particular is just odd looking.
Sorry, but the fabric felt thin and cheap. Plus there was puckering all over the place. Nearly every passenger commented on it.
Who the heck is Marcus Browlee?
Too expensive especially when optioned or with 4wd, lack of cab choices, build quality issues, too expensive..i know I said that earlier :)
5:38 Do people not like to hear the turbo whistle?!?!?
Fords Echo boost motors are Junk!
$47k and you don't even get push button start !?!
Push button start reduces security.
Its the 2nd roomiest midsize pickup. If you actually need to tow or go off-road this is the one. If not get a Ridgeline. It's roomier and does everything else better besides going off road and towing...
Ridgeline isn't a truck.
"right sized"? this truck is still massive compared to something from 1995. the EPA needs to make the manufacturers downsize trucks again.
Why?
I second that why?
@@stevesafety6743 trucks dont have a maximum height for the front bumper like cars do, which limits visibility and makes pedestrian impacts more likely and more deadly, especially to children. the Kids and Cars project was able to 'hide' more than 10 kids behind the front bumper of a big SUV and the driver couldnt see them. we are the only developed country in the world where pedestrian deaths are rising, partly because of the size and amount of big trucks and SUVs
I’m a Ford guy and I wanted to like this. But it’s my least favorite midsize truck. The proportions look awkward and the lack of features kills me. No sunroof available!?! Add in the horrible ford quality of the last 5-7 years and I’d take the Nissan over this truck.
Isn’t Ford having issues with leaking sunroofs in some of their other vehicles? Maybe that’s why they decided to scratch it?
Yep. I like my Maverick way over this
I love the new Ranger!
Wow. A normal sized truck.
Red light: too large, the proportions are awkward, no diesel, no hybrid, no single-cab version, the huge Teslaesque touchscreen will be unusable with gloves and while driving on a rough road. Just for giggles check prices for the 1990s - early 2000s Rangers, Toyotas and Nissans, even a beat-up 30-year old pickup sells for a pretty penny, which tells that those who actually need a pickup prefer a small one. Modern brutish-looking dreadnoughts are for posers, and manufacturers are happy to sell them because according to current EPA rules a larger car can use more gas and pollute more. Burn the planet faster while killing pedestrians and cyclists in the process (see Fortnine's video about grill size).
They're just slappin ranger stickers on mavericks and callin it a day broski. smh
Unfortunately, Ford quality is garbage these days. Wouldn't catch me spending my hard earned money on anything but a Honda or Toyota.
Another paid Ford review 😫
Toyota Stout will eat Ford's lunch
LOL ! Not even on a good day. TuRD...💩
Why are all midsizers ditching ext cabs? In canada no one offers ext cab they all discontinued them and just have 4door short box 4x4. Disapointing
