    I accidentally taught my puppy to sit in front of the door and yell to be let outside and now I have to live with it

    • @yararaffoul4242

      Wait... how did you teach that to your puppy😂 I might need that because I live in a very big house so I might not hear the bell but still can hear her voice

    • @jaanaenkerro445
      @jaanaenkerro445 3 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      @@yararaffoul4242 Well I guess it would be more accurate to say he tried it, it worked and so he decided to keep doing it. At first when he was very young he would be crying near the bedroom door in the morning, I would wake up, run to the door to the outside, make him sit and let him out. To him me waking up and taking him outside was like a reward. Also sometimes during the day he would just hang around the door to the outside and I wouldn't open the door but when he sat I would run to the door and open it as a reward. Once he learned that and did it but I didn't notice him, he would cry and whine and "yell" and I would notice it and think he wants to pee and run to the door to let him out and now I suffer listening to him crying at the door every single day. Good luck.

    when i trained my boxer as a kid to use the bell,, i used to pick up his paw, and smack the bell, then we would go outside.. took about a week.. I remember the day he did it himself.. we new he wanted to go out because he was running back and forth from us to the door in the other room. then all you heard was a loud clash of bells and he came running back in the room with a look like "DONT YOU GET IT!!!" we all cheered and were so happy..

    I taught this to our Maltese, Lola, 15 years ago. And as Zak said, dogs may start ringing the bell just to go outside without needing to potty. That she did. The funniest thing is our cat, who never goes outside, started ringing the bell too. I think it was just to get my attention or maybe to show Lola that cats are smart too! 😂

    We’ve used these bells on our doors since our dogs were puppies and LOVE THEM! The door they go out isn’t immediately visible from our family room where we spend so much of our time so they are indispensable! We also have a set of them on the back of our master bedroom door so they can let us know when they want to go out at night too! We like them so much so that we take them on vacation with us!

    I have officially had Riley for one week and granted, the poodle gene has definitely helped with her training as she is so intelligent, she has been so easy to train and it's 100% thanks to Zak! She is like 90% potty trained within 1 week of being home and only being 10 weeks old, she knows sit, leave it, stay, settle, and she is good about going to the door when she has to go #2. We are working on #1 and hoping to introduce the bells to really cement her potty training. Huge thank you to Zak and his team for EVERYTHING. She is even doing great with the cats and we are preventing reactivity to the scary outside world through the various series.

    Hey Zak, you said that there are three reward options, 1) treats. 2) play. 3) access to environment. Those are all true but what about praise and attention. That is a very underrated reward. Some dogs aren't very food or play motivated but almost all love praise and attention from there family!!

    • @dianebassett1930
      @dianebassett1930 วันที่ผ่านมา

      People overestimate praise and attention as a reward-- and most people give it as freely as oxygen, so the dogs rarely have to work for it. An effective reward is one the dog is willing to work to earn. Human babies are wired differently, and praise and attention from their mothers is a big reward. We erroneously attribute the value of that to dogs and other animals, and then take it personally when they don't give the behaviors we want in the situations we want.

Untill I watched one of your videos where you show how to turn shake into turning a light switch on. So I worked out how to teach it to her. So hopefully this one will work out. I'd love a really detailed luring video on teaching bow. I want to teach bow and sit pretty. She will lure up to sit pretty but straight up and down. Not sure how to get her holding it. And bow I just can't work out how to lure the position.

    Thanks for all of the content you bring for brand new puppy owners like myself! I have really enjoyed putting your trick training to use with my little one.
    Speaking of, I have been struggling to figure out how to teach the somersault. My puppy is wary of being on his back (something we struggled to overcome and compromise on with tricks like play dead or roll over). Inertia did not seem to have that issue, but I am uncertain of how to get past tucking the head between the paws to performing a proper somersault. There aren’t really any comprehensive demonstrations of this either. Any suggestions, or does this trick have to be a bust for now?

    Thanks for this. Some of us have a much bigger challenge. Our "outside" is hallway, elevator, hallway, outdoors. And half the year the drill is: put on layers, boots, etc on me, and jacket/harness on her...then hallway-elevator-hallway-outdoors... so the association process is not so easy. Good thing I have dogged determination! I think I need to get our gear all on, THEN ring the bell... maybe you could comment?

    I just got a desk bell for my puppy. I don’t want him clawing up my door. But with potty training I think we will do our schedule and on the way out have him ring the bell whether we help him to do it or he does it on his own. He is 5 months old and is still having a few accidents by the door if we don’t catch his signal. Sometimes he has the zoomies during play and other times the zoomie is panic and he needs to go outside. But our biggest problem is when the temp drops and he really doesn’t want to go out! I’m in Michigan and Boston terriers are notably cold temp haters! The coats really help.

    I taught my puppy to ring the bells early on in potty training, but I quickly found that he would ring the bells to get my attention for any reason. He often rang the bells to go outside, sure, but he would also ring them and then walk to his food bowl, sit, and look at me. Like "Mom it's 5:33 you're 3 minutes late for dinner time hellooooo" Sometimes he rings the bell, waits for me to come over, and asks for tummy scratches. Sometimes he grabs one of his bedtime stuffed animals, rings the bell, and tries to get me to follow him up to bed.
    Honestly, he seldom rings the bells to ask to pee anymore, he mostly uses it to remind me that it's time to eat or sleep or play.

      Yeah I have the same challenge now. We would go a few rounds and he wouldn’t go. Then I ignored my chi, then he “made” an accident. As is he tried to “punish” my “bad” behavior to not take him out again. Any one has suggestions to solve this?
