When Jocko said: "Why... Why did you let that happen?" I felt that to my core. Lately I've been feeling reinvigorated and refocused with new found determination. This video came at a perfect time. Thank you.
Like a lot of people one of my long term goals is to build muscle. This goal is a little different because I will never actually complete it. I will never be satisfied. It was difficult to motivate myself most days. I knew where I wanted to be, but I wasn't getting that instant gratification. To fix this problem I made myself a new workout plan. I workout everyday and I also write one motivational thing to myself everyday to remind myself why. Because even subconsciously, you are asking yourself why. Why are you pushing yourself so hard for something that has no definite end? I have been doing this for 14 days so far. I have seen more progress in those 14 days both physically and mentally than I have in the past 6 months. I wasn't even expecting to see a change for the 1st 2 months. I have to workout outside because there is no space for me inside. Since I started it has rained almost every day, but I continue to go out. So far my main thought that has kept me going is, " I don't expect you to be motivated 100% of the time. I expect you to be committed 100% of the time." My point is pay attention, write your goal down, know why you want it, and keep pushing.
The thing that's dangerous with setting fitness goals for most people, is ironically... achieving them. Because people think of a goal as "Im doing all this hard work to get to that, once I get there I can stop working". Which is not true with fitness, physical training should never stop.
You got this brother 👊🏻 4 years sober here and it wasn’t easy but 1 day at a time and every morning get up and get after it with that “I’m gonna be better than I was yesterday” mindset and you will be. Discipline Equals Freedom
I am 52 now, a few years older than Jocko....it would have been GOOD for my character if there was someone like Jocko around saying these types of things to me when I was in my 20's, as I lost my focus. "Never too late" they say...and I'm going believe this!!! Thanks Jocko.
That's me. If I cant hit my goal or it gets too hard even if theres the slightest struggle I quit the goal and fall back and say I cant... thanks jocko I needed to hear this.
Your passion and intensity combined with the truth in your words and messaging leaves little to no room for any of us who decide to follow your lead into life’s battles , any excuses for personal failure. Thank you Jocko. BTW, read your book Leadership strategy and tactics, field manual. Great read , liked it so much I bought a second copy for a fellow coworker of mine and gave it to him as a gift.
While this was intended for those posturing for career or military, this spoke to me on a spiritual level. Hearing this was a big come-back-to-Jesus moment for me. Thank you.
Jocko, you have a place among great men like Jordan Peterson and Joe Rogan, whose words will live on through millions of people for many years and have earned an eternal place in the history books. You have all simultaneously saved many from a life of an ignorant, unrealized potential, and soul-crushing existence, while providing the inspiration and pathway forward and beyond. Jordan Peterson's recent return and this video has started my ascent from losing sight at my long-term goal. Thank you.
Repetitive discipline outlasts instant gratification 🔥🔥 life is a river take the time to craft your boat from wood, instead of instant paper and tape...MASTER YOUR SKILL AND OPEN UP NEW AVENUES FOR GROWTH
1-Write (pen and paper) your goals down. 2-Make them few and simple. 3-Look at them every day as soon as you get up, no matter what. 4-Re-write them every Sunday. 5-Repeat the process UNTIL you reach them all. OUT!
I have a goal, if I work for the rest of the week I could achieve it if not I have to wait until next month. I was dreading working all week but after watching this I remembered the goal, and that this current battle is temporary. Thank you for reminding me of that….I still don’t want to go in though lol.
Best advice I got is to set habits. Take your goal and work it backwards - What is something you could do, every single day, that would move the needle? Figure out what the daily minimum viable habit is and just hold the discipline to do at least that. Example: Wanna write a movie? One page a day produces 3 first drafts. Even if you only worked the week days you'd still produce 2 without much trouble. For some tactical and strategic advice check out James Clear's "Atomic Habits".
A long term goal is only a long term goal as long as it comes from deep within you. It has to be rooted within a deep desire that stems from your very soul, it must be understood and planned for by your mind. Look at a feeling you want to feel, then think of what must you do, în order to keep feeling that on a regular basis. You want to help others, because u liked the feeling u got when someone helped u? You might consider becoming a teacher or A mentor, as long as you are good at a given subject. You wanna look like a greek God, you know you have to keep working out. If you truly want to keep your dreams alive, you will not stop when failure comes knocking at the door. You must look for ways to keep on going. A change of protocol will be needed. That is OK. The requirements, to keep on going, change as you evolve. Remember what you want to achieve, remember why your soul wants you to achieve it and you will have the power to keep on going.
I am-was- a chef. Over 20 years of cooking. Covid 19 decimated my industry, so I had to find something else. I joined the Apple Developer Program and began studying code. Swift, C++, Xcode. It is that hardest thing I have done in my life. My long term goal is to make money creating apps for Apple or to work for a company that does. First, I have to learn a new language (coding) and I am about to give it up. Been doing it for three months now and have only seen little progress.

I’ve had problems adjusting my long term goal based on the short term circumstances. I’m just an “idea guy” and it pisses me off. It’s not just the failure I think about, but weather I am even capable of accomplishing my goals. Everyday is a fight to be better than yesterday.
I have long goals and short term goals but the long term always out shines the short term and without the short term goals I wouldn't achieve the long term.. for example school all I want to do is get out and make money and move out from my toxic parents house but I keep forgetting what's at hand now and I overthink on the future .
