Best Riding Jacket Ever. Break away from convention.

  • I spent years wearing textile Adventure and Touring jackets and I grew to hate them. I found these jackets to be heavy, only good for one to two seasons and most are very expensive. I decided to try another approach that has completely transformed my riding experience. I purchased a Knox riding shirt with armor and abrasion resistance and paired it up with a Columbia modular jacket. See how transformative this approach has been for me and riding all year long.
    P.S. I am riding my 2023 Aprilia Tuareg. I rode six sections of BDRs in six different states covering 4200 miles in 18 days. I was exposed to freezing temperatures, rain and also very hot temperatures exceeding 100º.

    A great insight into your setup, I gave up on heavy ADV gear years ago, I ride with a Klim Marrakesh jacket, I wear a Scott Ergonomic Pro DP Rain Jacket if it rains or is chilly, I mix in more cold weather items underneath when needed and my Warm n Safe heated shirt in the winter.

    Nice, I’ve also gone to an armored shirt from Revit. Wish I had done that from the beginning, could have saved a ton of money. Another nice thing is that using unconventional clothing you can get more color choices. I’m so tired of black riding gear being 90% of what is offered.

    Completely agree with video! I bought a Klim Kodiak suit ($$$$$) thinking it was the best protection and style….hate it - too heavy, stiff armor, takes up tons of space. Now I use Goretex Aerostitch darien pants, Klim Marrakesh jacket with light ghost armor and Goretex Marmot thin jacket with removable puffy. I am so much more comfortable, lighter, takes up less space, etc. Way cheaper too, bought pants used, Marrakesh on sale and Marmot jacket on clearance….never going back to bulky, heavy suits.

    I second the Knox system. Went with the mk3 which is level 2 slide and AA padding. I pair it with either their dual pro jacket and puffy or a Mosko surveyor jacket. Hot summer days the mk3 with a evaporative cooling vest under worked for up to a couple of hours in100 degree heat.
    Using the Warm and safe jacket is a real luxury on those freezing days under the mk3. Thanks for making these videos.🍦🍺

    That is a very neat system, I am going to have to look up that shirt. You may want to wash that jacket as I hear they don't lose the waterproofing but when they get dirty it clogs up the poares and that allows the water to get in.

    Yup, i'm in Texas and bought a knox 'shirt' for summer riding. I was dumb, and bought a black one. Wish the had a light gray. Black "summer mesh" only works when you're moving, otherwise it's just a big heat sink. I have a couple of other jackets. I'm sort of in between sizes, which really sucks. My knox is pretty snug. Maybe should have gone up a size, but assume it's supposed to be a little snug. Beware of euro sizing, and basically size up from the charts, or at least by locally (US) so you can return. I bought one jacket from a UK store, and the return shipping was the same price (almost) as the jacket. I need a light colored, light weight, jersey to go over the knox, just hate spending $100 on a riding jersey.

    Best system: an armored mesh shirt, a thin Goretex pac-lite jacket ($150), and a packable puff jacket ($50). With this, you can ride from desert heat to mountain cool, rain or shine, in comfort. All for $500. Light as a feather. Layers! Forget the all-in-one ADV jacket nonsense.

    • @advmatt
      @advmatt  9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@stephenfox728 pants and boots are still an enigma for me. I think a rigid boot is key to protecting your feet and ankles. I have not decided if waterproof boots are worth it. As for pants, I am not sure what to do. For now I wear very protective pants that provide some waterproofing and I can add a liner. Unfortunately they are black, so hot in the summer. I am considering getting the Pando armored tights and then wear whatever I want over them. Only problem is waterproofing is an issue without rain pants. If I try something else I will share it.

    Thanks Matt! Question about the Knox armor: how does it do in the hot and humid mid-Atlantic summer? I’m current in the Northern VA/DC area, where I know you spent some time, and I’m concerned the close fit Knox armor might be too hot and uncomfortable. I sweat and have a hard enough time with the heat as is. Thanks again!

    • @advmatt
      @advmatt  9 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@frank_jk well, any armor in those conditions will be hot, the Knox is no different. The biggest area where I sweat the most is the back armor. I just tolerated the heat and sweatiness when I was back east. Honestly, the monkey was much more of a problem. I also stopped a lot to hydrate. In the hottest months it will be uncomfortable. I wore the Knox in 116 degree Nevada desert heat. It was not fun. It is much cooler than any ADV jacket I have ever worn.

    There is no one solution. I have had many so called waterproof garments and I am convinced that they have to be multilayered to feel water proof. When one wets out it feels wet even though it is not technically leaking. I have come to the conclusion though , there is no free ride. You get what you pay for. Multilayer waterproofing is the only way and what those layers are dictate costs. Is klim overpriced? Yes and no. Columbia has always made decent stuff. Layering for any activity is king and but everyones needs vary. Sounds like you have found what works for you,
