2023 Mazda CX-30 Review | Standing Alone in the Sea of Sub-Compact Crossovers

- No turbo here! Come along as we do a thorough test drive of Mazda's 2023 CX-30. These come standard with all wheel drive, and other than being tight on space, it easily rises to the top of the sub compact cross over class. One car that also gets caught up in the collateral damage of the CX-30's popularity is the much more fun driving Mazda 3. We now understand why this lures 3 buyers away, as it has the same overall Mazda feel and fuel economy, but with a more cushy ride, and the much beloved higher seating position. This specific CX-30 is the premium trim level with all the bells and whistles, and has the naturally aspirated 2.5 liter four cylinder that loves to rev.

Thanks for commenting. Mazda has carved out that design niche for themselves. They are extremely stylish but never over styled which is the key to aging well. Of course the CX-30 can be a little polarizing over its use of black cladding but overall it’s all Mazda in the elegance department. Thanks for watching and happy motoring.
I actually own both cars, a Mazda 3 Hatchback and a CX-30. I drive the CX-30 65% of the time. Both cars are great and I love both cars, but the CX-30 wins by a bit in my opinion. It really depends of what you like, some days I feel I'm having more fun driving the 3 and other days I feel I'm having more fun riving the CX-30. The 3 is sportier and the CX-30 is more comfortable, I'd say that the CX-30 gives you a much more smoother ride than the 3, however, If I had to choose between the 3 and a Toyota or a Nissan etc CUV, I'd go with the Mazda any day.

@@BeyondTheTestDrive Yes, there is actually a difference in the transmission tuning but it's not by much. I think you're right when you said that the transmission in the CX-30 is sluggish compare to the transmission in the Mazda 3, but it's not a huge difference.

Just wondering do you find less body roll on the 3? While the cx-30 doesn't have alot of body roll it does have some especially when taking corners hard or quickly you do notice it. Is it less noticeable on the 3?
@@paranromallover4543 great question. Mazda likes to design in some body roll into all their cars. So the 3 has some roll too. The taller CX-30 has more noticeable roll than the 3 but not by much.
Mazda CX-30 is definitely one of my favorite small SUV's!
I love our CX30 its BRILLIANT as in the video the interior is beautiful and excellent build quality Yes it is small in the rear (I don't have kids) but it is a small SUV the Sports trim level is great with all the spec you need the none touch screen is a brilliant safety feature you never loose sight on the road while using it plus the climate controls are separate so no need to fiddle with a touch screen to use them The power of the Skyactive X engine with the automatic six speed box is all you need on these crowded roads in the UK with good fuel return I fully agree with David (Great video mate) The CX30 looks beautiful most small SUV's look boxy The CX30 is a lovely car for anyone who likes comfort, style and a nice pleasant driving experience and I love ours the electric memory seats and side mirrors mean my wife and I have no problem getting an excellent driving position I would recommend anyone to buy a Mazda CX30 or the CX3 I have had a C Class Mercedes before but even if I had the choice I would get the CX30 I am so confident in this car (Ex Advanced Blue light driver) I would recommend it to anyone Great video David thank you PS if you need to hard wire a dash cam take it to your dealer Mazda CX30's are Brilliant Bear Hull

Love my 2022 CX-30 Carbon Edition, but I had to add additional black accents/customization, even beyond what the Carbon Edition already adds to the vehicle, to get that cladding to work for me. I've been driving mine for about 14 months now & zero problems to report.

Why is everybody saying that the back row is tight? I tested for myself and there is more space than in a VW Golf for example.
Good comment and question. My comments are relative to the CX-30’s subcompact competition. The Cx-30 and Mazda 3 are comparable and better than the Golf/GT. S. The Golf is essentially gone now in the US; except for the GTi , so the CX-30 basically competes against the Taos, which is much more spacious.
That gap between the door and the dash isn't a mistake. It's so that silly people don't crush their fingers completely whilst shutting the door........it's been in every mazda for a few years.

11:15 this is where Sport mode is useful. The difference is night and day in that kind of environment, I have parents up in the mountains and I use Sport when driving around similar roads, and the transmission is more aggressive, and the car feels more responsive overall.

Just picked up a new premium cx30 and it does have Bose stereo. Love the car I also have a 2022 select so I have 2 and think it’s a beautiful car and has good pep and nice ride,

Edit (my comment below on cylinder deactivation may not be correct. Mazda has conflicting information between the media kit and their webb site. Even our local Mazda dealer is not clear on the matter. But assuming the press kit is the correct source it does look like the 2023 has cylinder deactivation with the NA.). We cover trim levels and recommendations, driving dynamics, highway driving and fuel economy, and provide some thoughts on which subcompact CUV you should buy. Although the CX-30 loses to its Mazda3 sibling in the fun to drive ranking, its higher ride height and slightly softer ride make for a more comfortable daily driver and trip mobile. One caveat is I once moved from the east coast to Denver and the decrease in power in my car was VERY noticeable. I had to have the car tuned for altitude to get it back to normal. If your demo isn't tuned for that 5-7k altitude that could account for the sluggishness you're describing. But the extra weight is also a factor.

Funny you say about hesitant transmission because I feel the same way about my 23 mazda3 sedan. It must be a tuning thing because I know Mazda changed the tranny tuning as well as the engine tuning for 2023

Originally the cx-5 was my car of choice; mainly because it is a lot roomier then the cx-30. But after a test drive on both, honestly I didn't feel much of a difference in the driving dynamics and the comfort between the two, but the price!! and while the cargo area is tiny in the cx-30 vs the cx-5; I resolve that issue by folding the back seats flat! the cx-30 is also better on gas then the cx-5.
I have no regrets opting for the cx-30. It is a fun city car to drive and a breeze to park. I am a tall guy, and have no problems getting in and out of the cx-30; as well as the driver seat space and comfort for a person my size.
Initially the tiny cargo space of the cx-30 was my only disappointment; but for a single person or even a couple who live in the city, the cx-30 is ideal. After folding the back seats down, and laying down a nice area rug that completely covers the cargo area and the folded back seats, the area rug gives it a very clean, neat, and premium look to the gained 45 cu ft of cargo space.

Hi and thanks for the question. I would say no. Seating height in the CX-5 is going to be around 2-3 inches taller than the CX-30. But the CX-30 sits up quite a bit over a car already. Order a cx-30 with manual and 2.0 natural asspirated engine, manual, 2 weeks ago. In EU we do not have a turbo availible, and trim levels are a bit differrent. initially considered an automatic, however many reviews point put the same problem as mentioned in this video. I’ m a new driver, i did not want to feel the lack of responsivness from the car. test drive was a first one after getting my drivers licence and visibilty was one of my concearns, however did not have a problem. liked the driver possition, simplicity of the interior and material quality.

I've checked out CX-30 and was put off by the homogenous box in the middle, besides the driver. Nothing in there, but it's so wide and makes me feel boxed in and cramped in driver position. Does it get in the way? Also, can you fold the front right seat, like bend the seat forward, to have a single flat loading surface from the rear door to the dashboard?
Is there a way to disable cylinder deactivation?
Hi Mark. Thanks for the questions. I am not totally sure what you mean by the box in the middle. The center console is about as wide as in any other compact. The CX-30 is a bit narrower than others in the class and along with the smaller windows, can create a little bit more of a cramped feeling. Unless you are a large person it is fine though For reference front hip and shoulder room are 54.6 and 55.6 inches respectively. The other top pick in the class is the Crosstrek at 55.1 inches of hip room and 56.7 inches of shoulder room. Regarding the front seat, I am not 100 percent sure but I do not think it folds flat. If it did Mazda would be featuring that in their marketing materials. And as far as I know, you cannot disable the cylinder deactivation. I never noticed it in my time with the CX-30. Hope all that helps.

The "platinum quartz" looks good on the mazda3, but I find it doesn't suit the cx-30; wish they offered it in "zircon sand".
And the MX-5 should offer "platinum quartz" rather than "zircon sand".
@@CigsInABlanket agreed the red and black does look pretty good. The platinum quartz is a rather interesting color though. All cars wear their colors differently. Small cars like the Miata can wear more adventurous colors. Thanks for commenting!
The Carbon Trim used to be just an appearance package and not really a value proposition, as you noted. However, with global chip shortage, Mazda has dropped the sunroof from the Preferred package while only offering a paltry $330 credit. So, the Carbon suddenly becomes a better deal than the Preferred with Moonroof and genuine leather seats
Thanks for commenting. Great point. The tipping point on the 2022 3 was the Bose stereo in the Carbon Trim but Mazda has removed that from all Carbon Trim levels. Probably a chip shortage issue or Carbon trims we’re stealing sales from the Premium trim level. For the CX-30 only turbos got the Bose, if I am recalling correctly. @@BeyondTheTestDrive Yeah, when they introduced the car, the PREFERRED had BOSE AND a moonroof! I think it is a bit of 'global supply chain' and a lot of marketing positioning after they realized they were giving TOO much away! The Bose isnt even on the S Premium trim this year due to 'chip shortage'. Crazy times. I am test driving a Carbon tomorrow, hope to drive it home!

@@NITESHKUMAR-ie1mw bro, I admit I am kind of a light foot on the pedal, but with just a few weeks of ownership I I average over 30mpg mixed city/hwy and today's commute with mainly highway (almost 40 miles) was 42.2 mpg. Loving it.
I just got one. The base model. I can't seem to get the doors to unlock except by pressing the button on the fob. Same with the back hatch.
Congrats. You made a great choice. Check your features because I think the base model only comes with the keyless entry (key fob button push). The Smart keyless entry detects the key in proximity so you don’t have to get it out. So double check. I think in the US you have to get the select trim and up to get smart keyless entry. Hi Joan. Thanks for the question. In the US market the sunroof comes on the Preferred trim level and up. Are you in the US? I am sure the sunroof is available in many markets.

I’m in Spain and I have to say that Mazda does not offer sunroof in cx30. They offer however in cx5, BUT mandatory linked to leather seats….. which I don’t want at all.
In other European countries they offer sunroof option in cx30. Why not in Spain? Nobody knows at any dealer I’ve been asking for.
At the end, they make me feel angry and frustrated in a sort of love and hate to Mazda.
Toyota does the same and Honda too: sunroof? Yes, take an upgrade $$$ always in leather seats.
I feel I will keep driving Audi, Volvo or MB, as so many years I did.

They bundle and select which options will make the most money. In the United States it is fairly typical that heated seats and heated steering wheel are only available in the highest trim where in Canada they are standard. I hate that the preferred doesn't have heated side mirrors. I have to jump to the carbon edition to get it and I need it where I live.
Agreed. The heated mirrors is a weird thing. Even the premium trim does not have heated mirrors. Only carbon and turbo models. Good luck and keep in touch if you buy something.
In 2 minds about 2022 CX-30 Premium or the 2021 Toyot Prius XLE or Limited Trim. Seem to cost about the same (the used ones), but for me (my city driving mostly), I feel like the gas advantage is a big thing. But i am sacrificing on that if I bought the CX-30. I don't know what to do. I am environmentalist too.
Thanks for commenting and the question. The gas consumption of these is really not comparable as the Prius will is about half of what the CX-30 does. But the driving engagement is also not comparable. I am assuming you need a hatch as that is really all they have in common. I do think if you drive mainly in the city you will be missing out on what the CX-30 is intended for. Definitely try to drive them and see what works better for you space wise. Although the CX-30 will use more gas it’s still pretty efficient and is easy to park and maneuver in a city environment. And anything compared to the Prius will seem like a fuel hog. Stay in touch and let us know which way you go. If you can swing it it may be worth checking out the new Corolla cross hybrid. But a used car has already impacted the environment in its materials and manufacturing so that is the greener choice.
I love this car, thanks for the review. Bummed it doesn’t come with wireless CarPlay at any trim level. That’s what’s missing for it to be perfect. Also surprised that the VW Taos doesn’t come with wireless CarPlay either. Still holding out for a nicer/borderline luxury but affordable CUV with wireless carolay. Thoughts?
Thanks for watching and the nice comments. Assuming you like the overall Mazda vibe, I think the CX-50 comes standard with wireless CarPlay. It’s larger and more money of course but drives and feels very much like the CX-30. Other options in the compact class, like the Kia Seltos, Honda HR-V, and Toyota Corolla Cross also have it I think. The new 2024 Seltos is actually pretty nice and worth a look. Lots of value but it may not be the borderline luxury of the Mazda you like. One thing with wireless CarPlay is that it needs a wireless charger also to be convenient. I have also found wireless CarPlay to still be a little glitchy but it has got much better lately. But if it’s in your budget and not too large the CX-50 is a great choice. And don’t overlook the Honda HR-V. It’s interior is really nice and the pricing is pretty good. Heard the visibility is quite poor with small windows. What’s your take on that, especially compared to the Corolla Cross? Excellent video.
Hi Tai. Thanks for the great question. Compared to the Corolla Cross and most others the side windows are smaller. I would definitely consider the visibility of the Corolla Cross excellent. If you jump from the Toyota to the Mazda you will notice a smaller feeling cabin. But visibility is still good and especially out the back it’s fine. I really had no issues with it, and I do enjoy an airy cabin. I think the smaller windows just give the sense of a tighter interior space. Thanks for watching and the kind compliment.
i found this the first time i test drove it. i read some people saying if you keep the mirrors angled out more without any of the car body showing in the mirror it helps with reducing blind spots
@@user-jo5mp5jk6o I actually just recently changed the way I position my mirrors - and I’m 59 years old. It’s definitely better. Just to let you know, I set them so I can see the side of my car. Then bump them further out. It’s made a huge difference
I own this CX-30 (same trim and color). Coming from a Ford Escape and a Ford Explorer, I don't feel that I have poor visibility. I do pay attention to the car's excellent blind-side monitoring. It works for me quite well -- even here in my busy/heavy-traffic area (Silicon Valley/Bay Area). I would recommend taking one on a test drive on both the highway and in-town to see if it would work for you. I've got to add: We love our CX-30. We're taking it on a camping trip to Mt. Shasta this week! It still feels like an amazing value!

We aren't giants, and with the front seats in normal position, there is ample leg room ibn the back. As far as giants, they need a giant suv.

My hunch is that any refreshes on the CX-30 may reduce the amount but I doubt it will go away. I think it looks fine on the darker colors but it looks a little too much on the lighter ones.

No more Bose speakers?
Yea, right now in the CX-30, Bose is reserved for the turbo trim levels. Maybe the 2024 trim levels will include it back into the non-turbo premium and carbon edition trims.
The cladding really put me off on this car. Everything else looks and feels wonderful, but I cant unsee that thick cladding. I hope they slik it down in a facelift or design refresh in the 2025 model ot something. Cars like the CX-5 and CX-9 have muvh slimmer caldding and look good on the respective car.

@@BeyondTheTestDrive we just recently bought a CX-30 for our 20 yr. old daughter. Her first new car. I never even considered Mazda before. Now my wife is on the verge of buying a CX5. I have my eye on the CX-90 but will probably wait until the 2025's are released so the first-year bugs are dealt with.

I'll never understand why Mazda gives everyone a reason not to buy it's cars by not having enough rear leg room. Also wish they toned down the plastic cladding a bit to look more like the cx-5
It is their Achilles heel. One or two more inches would help sales I think. On darker colors the plastic cladding is not too outlandish but I think I even commented in the video it is still too much. Thanks for watching and commenting!

@@onenikkione turbo is not for everyone. Some people, like myself, just enjoy the quickness and responsiveness of a turbo. Sure is a bit of a gas guzzler but I knew that from the beginning

It greatly annoys me that car makers force the buyer into a larger/turbo/etc. engine to get basic things expected in all vehicles like elec-heated seats and a good stereo. The two have zero association.
This non-turbo does have heated seats. While not the top of the line Bose stereo Mazda’s base 8 speaker is actually pretty good. Mazda’s two tier pricing (turbo/non turbo) does leave the high end goodies for the the bigger engine as you mention. Thanks for commenting.

I am soooooo tired of all the SUVs. I really hope this trend swings back, at least some, to smaller cars. Without entry level affordable cars we’re going to be creating a disaster for the lower middle class regarding affordability. It will be socially awful when average folks can’t afford to get to work. And it’s not like we have the public transportation network to provide an alternative.
Thanks Katie for commenting. You make some great points. This CX-30 is more of a lifted hatchback and the subcompact class is at least not the hulking SUVs that seem to sell regardless of the ridiculous prices. Most of the time we try to always focus on lower trims and base models. You are right, we need more lower cost cars. EVs are not really helping in that area as manufactures abandon lower cost gas cars to focus on those.

@@katiecannon8186 Nope I loved your comment! You are hitting on one of my pet peeves also. I was always a little skeptical and critical of the subcompact crossover class but given the prices of compact CUV’s and the growing prices of the remaining sedans there are actually some good choices in that class. The GTI is an awesome choice!
If you don't like crossovers, then go watch something else. Many people love the high driving position, easy entry where you're not sitting down almost on the pavement and general utility of higher surfaces when you load and unload stuff. In the end CX-30 is pretty much Mazda 3, only a litltle bit higher, it's not a 3 ton tank.
I think it’s because Americans are so big they want the type of car they can just climb into. Rather than squat into and squat up and out of a small car
A bit overpriced considering at over $30k there's no rear USBs, no power passenger seat, tiny 8 inch infotainment screen, skinny tires, and no cooled seats for starters.
Not gonna disagree on prices. There are some missing things like you mention. Feature wise, the Kia Seltos top trim will have cooled seats. Not too many in this class have cooled or power passenger seats and the skinnier tires help with road noise and will be a little cheaper to replace. The screen is a landscape format and right sized for the interior size. The main issue with that is whether folks want a touch screen or wheel control. I think the best value for combination or room/features/driving/price/fuel economy is going to be the Subie Crosstrek. Thanks for watching and commenting!

It's Okay but it's no CX-3 ....
If not for the absolutely hideous cladding, I would have one in my garage, as would my Mom, but neither one of us could look at it for more than 10 seconds without throwing up. Whenever I hear someone say they LIKE all that pathetic plastic, I instantly change the topic from cars to something far less controversial..........like, politics, or religion.
In person the cladding isn't that bad. Unless you really focus on it but the car looks too good and sleek for you focus on that area. It's a great car for the right person.
The cladding goes well with the machine gray metallic paint. No other color, in my opinion.
@@marisollunamusic It does work "better" with certain colors, but no car should have that percentage of it's fenders, or flank in plastic.
Torsion beam rear suspension is cheap and that outdated rotary knob infotainment system is a joke in 2023, touchscreen please!!!.........
Torsion beam is here to stay since it underpins their primary architecture right now. Fairly sophisticated suspension on CX-90 and would expect the touch option and wireless CarPlay to appear on 2024 3s and CX30. CX-50s and 90s also allow touch on CarPlay. Torsion beam is cheaper but also packages better on the small 3 and CX/30. CX-50 probably has room for a multi link. Thanks for commenting.
Not all manufacturer designs/setups are created equal even if they say the same thing on the basic printed specs. Your statement is just as ignorant as saying all 4-wheel disc brakes are the same, all GDI engines are the same, all CVT or geared automatic transmissions are the same, all 215/55R18 tires are the same, etc. The 'Torsion-beam' CX-30 still manages to ride, drive & handle better than the other Crossovers in its size/price segment with more-elaborate ML suspensions - & will end up being more reliable in the long run as am added bonus. Also, I love that Mazda doesn't use lame, oversized (& dangerous/distracting) touchscreens that look awful & protrude from the dash like a sick joke.
