As someone mentioned before , the hole is a razor or sharper edge and the other would be a working edge.
The hole is so that you can sharpen one edge sharper than the other and tell which is which.

Smatchets were made for smashing through military helmets. You'd be far better off with a bayonet. The word "fighting knife" is very funny.
