With some complicated wounds here in the United States, some doctors actually use medical maggots that are sterile to clean infection and dead flesh. It's still a thing.

Maximus didnt fall in line like Equintus. Commedus inheirited the throne, and as a soldier u should serve the emperor (Rome). They took Maximus waaaaay far away from the northern army (Ride untill dawn, then execute him), so nobody would catch a wind of Maximus being executed, because he is so respected by his forces to begin with. About them killing his family aswell, i guess comes down to basically decreasing the risk of revenge at some point.. Only Maximus and Commedus + the sister knew what really happened, so if the "new" ceasar orders Maximus executed, they should comply as loyal soldiers of rome, no questions asked... (Because they also lack context to begin with) xD

Stop thinking in categories of FAIRNESS ... this is ANCIENT ROME!
Oh and "the son avenging the murder of his father" is a big theme in greek and roman myths ... and to prevent this you get rid of the rest of that family.

Yes, this is a great movie. If you're interested in Marcus Aurelius, The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius is an excellent book (actually...just his journal). I keep it, read it and have been struggling with it for years. He had a truly brilliant mind. Commodus, although he didn't die this way, was a douche. So, to watch him die this way gives visceral satisfaction. Russell Crowe was in his prime in this film. That's also viscerally, plus sexually appealing if you're a woman or gay. Yes, this is an engaging film.

17:55 Proximo is played by Oliver Reed. Reed actually died during filming, so they had to change the ending (he was originally supposed to survive til the end)

HISTORICAL SPOILER!! The relationship between Marcus Aurelias & Commudus was nothing like it's portrayed in the movie, quite the opposite. Despite his father's blessing Commodus was a paranoid brutal emperor. He was assassinated evebtually. Despite Maximus being the only main character that's fictional i love this movie. I consider it a classic. Ridley Scott's a genuis storyteller.

Fantastic reaction. I hadn't seen a movie with Oliver Reed since the musical "Oliver" where he played Bill Sykes. He had his troubles but was a great actor nonetheless.
Sadly he passed away during the filming of "Gladiator" so movie magic and special technology had to be used to complete the film 🤔

This movie is fantastic. It has a determined an honorable hero one of the best villains ever. A tremendously interesting Gray character with good leanings in Proximo and Lucilla is extremely intelligent.

Its Oliver Reed. He actually died from a heart attack during a break from filming this and as a result of his death, his remaining scenes in Gladiator had to be completed using a body double and CGI.

  • @kevind4850

This film follows the same basic plot as 1964's _Fall_ _of_ _the_ _Roman_ _Empire_ that starred Alec Guiness (as Marcus Aurelius), Steven Boyd (as Livius/Maximus), Christopher Plummer (as Commodus), and Sophia Loren (as Lucilla). Interestingly, Richard Harris, who plays Marcus Aurelius here, was originally slated to appear as Commodus in the 1964 film, though Christopher Plummer was a bigger name at the time and ended up taking that role. Historically, neither film is very accurate, but make for good drama. When I saw it in the theater, I was somewhat disappointed that some of the CGI didn't come off as very convincing, and that they didn't take a more historically accurate (and just as dramatic) take on the story. Hopefully, films like this get at least some viewers to look into what we really know about events.

To see Joaquin Phoenix ("Commodus") in a more sympathetic role, I'll suggest watching M. Night Shyamalan's _Signs_ (2002). BTW, maggots (from flies bred in sterile conditions) are still used in medicine to treat things like gangrene - but certainly, the idea makes me cringe, too.

The Princess loved Maximus more than any in life, save her son. Which is hinted at that may actually be Maximus' son. Releasing Maximus to go to his family was the hardest thing she had ever done. Stellar performances by all in the cast.
